Time for Clean Install?
Or is it time to go back to Tiger?
I have tried three separate times to install Leopard, and after each restart now, I cannot see my hard drive or the disk image on the desktop. I can see everything else, the dock, menu bar, airport, time, etc. Is it time for me to just do a clean install, or should I just go back to Tiger? I miss the ease of when Tiger updated so nicely.
I forgot to mention that I see the rainbow wheel all the time now.

Thanks for the clarity. I am just going to do an erase and install right now, and I will seriously consider partitioning the hard drive to have tiger on one and leopard on the other.
I did that, but only because I still need to test my software in Tiger. I actually haven't gotten around to installing Tiger yet.
There is a misconception that Leopard, in an of itself, is flaky and shouldn't be relied upon. That is incorrect. If you try an upgrade install of Leopard and it doesn't work well, you'll see that pretty clearly. That doesn't mean the Leopard is a bad OS. That means that Tig-pard is bad OS. Once you get rid of the whatever is left of Tiger that is causing problems, Leopard will run very, very well.

10.6.1 and multiple KPs - time for clean install?
I did an upgrade install of SL on my Macbook and was very pleased initially. A few weeks ago, I started experiencing kernal panics with Superduper and Carbon Copy Cloner. The other day, iTunes 8 caused a KP (I then finally upgraded to version 9 last night). Yesterday, Grab KP'ed 3 times in a row. I'm left feeling that I may need to start from scratch but would greatly prefer not to go through the hassle. So for all you experts out there:
1. Is it best to suck it up and go through a clean install? Any other alternatives/suggestions?
2. Can I partition my current 320gig drive into two, install SL cleanly onto the second, set it as the startup disk and then go about copying over the App, Documents, Download and Desktop folders. i am hesitant to restore any settings from my Time Machine or a clone of the current drive made yesterday as I feel that will just invite back whatever bug caused this. I would then go through and setup each app with their preferences etc.
3. Any files that I am not thinking of that i need to consider bringing over to the new install apart from the above ones?
4. If all goes well, i would then erase out the first drive and use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the second partition onto the first and set it as the startup disk. If all remains well I would then erase the first partition and hopefully be back into a clean system.
Again, any thoughts/suggestions/advice are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
ESo the app crashes continue - iTunes just went down 4 times in a row!!!

NO Lenovo Windows 8.1 Recovery DVD for CLEAN INSTALL! + unable to Install UEFI MODE
Hi,
I Just bought 25 Thinkpad T431s Laptops for my company (@ISRAEL)
All of them came with windows 7SP1 Installed And Recovery is Windows 8 (not 8.1 even though 8.1 is out for a yr!)
The Install process takes 3 Hours!!! Just for upgrading to windows 8.
Then I need to upgrade to 8.1 - the process is about 3 hours more! Because I need to Register And create Microsoft account for each user then to verify the account.
After that I need to Log with the account to the PC And then Download the update (3.5GB) And Install it.
IS ANYONE AT LENOVO THINKS THAT ITS ACCEPTABLE?
DO I WORK FOR LENOVO? DO I NEED TO SPEND 6 HOURS FOR UPGRADING EACH LAPTOP?
Don't forget that after that I need to uninstall all the bloater from the PC. Like Symantec AV (Because Enterprise company's uses Enterprise Class AV, FW And other software. We uses Kaspersky Enterprise, ESET, And others...)
AND ABOVE ALL.
If I want to Install Original Windows 8.1 I can't!
Because the OS Recovery DVD is not bootable And contain special recovery files with special extensions. Also, there is no PRODUCT CODE! Just "WINDOWS 8" sticker logo on the back of the notebook.
SO I WANT TO KNOW WHERE AND HOW(!)
I CAN GET A WINDOWS 8.1 ORIGINAL ISO IN ORDER TO INSTALL IT ON ALL MY PC's.
I want to know why I can't Install Just the "OPERATING SYSTEM RECOVERY DISK" (A standard clean Install)
== When I tried with my own Windows 8.1 Pro VL \ RETAIL ISO to Install it didn't pass activation==
==================== not even with the extracted key from the bios=====================
FYI - WHEN I BUY DELL OR HP LAPTOPS I'M GETTING A WINDOWS 8.1 PRO X64 BOOTABLE DVD DISK in addition to the 2 DVD RECOVERY DISKS. (So I am able to Install windows Without all the that you And them put into the recovery disk set).
Customer service in ISRAEL said that this is not possible! And that the only way is:
1. Use the 3 DVD recovery disks to format And Install windows 8.0
2. Register the user with a Microsoft account
3. Log in to each PC with his own Microsoft account
4. Download 8.1 update from Microsoft store
3. Install the 3.5GB update.
4. uninstall all the bloater.
So can I please ask you to confirm the answer I got from LENOVO ISRAEL. If So, ill return the laptops And that will the last time ANY OF MY COMPANY'S WILL EVER BUY ANY NOTEBOOKS OR TABLETS FROM LENOVO!
In addition, im trying to figure out how can I contact Lenovo main office to file a complaint against Lenovo Israel.
CEO Ms. Sigal didn't do anything to try And solve the issue, the product manager Mr. Many talk with me on the phone And was very rood. At the end he hang up the phone in my face! After I proved him wrong in another issue (T440s T431s cannot be installed with UEFI Because External DVD drive does not support UEFI Install only Legacy. And there is a big different between Legacy And UEFI)
Thank you.
Moderator note; profanity / implied profanity edited. Forum RulesHi ohad, welcome to the forums,
I'm sorry to read about your experience.
I don't work for Lenovo but it would appear to me that something may have gone wrong at the sales / purchasing stage; to my knowledge the T431s is only available with Windows 7 preload, (with Win 8 recovery discs in some cases as you have), or with Windows 8 preload. A Win 8.1 preload doesn't appear to be available for the system, but I stand to be corrected on this. If you required Windows 8.1, in my opinion the better option of the two, would have been a system with the Win 8 preinstall as this would only require updating to Win 8.1
Unfortunately I also can't envisage Lenovo creating a factory image for the T431s because it must be pretty near end of life.

Erased Hard Drive for Clean Install of Leopard, Hard drive is gone!
I put in my Leopard Install disk to do a clean install of everything as I was going to give this iMac to someone. I erased the hard drive and then started the Leopard install. It stopped half way through and that was that! Now the hard drive does not appear as my Macintosh HD anymore. When I open disc utility, it lists it as just a 150MB hard drive; no name, no volume. If I try to format it again, it says "resource busy". If I try to install Leopard, it just keeps looking for a drive to install it in. Bummer. Any ideas how I can get my hard drive to be recognized again? It is an iMac G5, 5 years old with no other problems before this. Thanks.
Try shutting down (powering off). Then start it up again using your Mac OS X installation disc, and run Disk Utility as you did before. This time, try going to the Partition tab (instead of using the Erase tab). Reset the +Volume Scheme+ to *1 Partition*, even if it already has only one partition. Click the Options button, and make sure it is set for *Apple Partition Map*. Name the volume +Macintosh HD+, set the Format to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+, and Apply.
See if that works any better. -
Where to download OS X mavericks (trying jan/2015) for clean install
hello,
i heard mavericks is not available for downloading anymore, any other web (safe) or way i can get Mavericks to download? specially for a clean install usb - emergency reason, since i am going to attempt to install yosemite on my late 2013 mac retina, (which has mavericks already)
If i didn't prev download it with an apple ID
I appreciate any helpTo answer your questions:
1. That is correct
2. TimeMachine backs up all files to another disk (it can backup to the local disk also but if the disk fails you've lost your TM backups as well as the original stuff so not much good to do TM backups locally). Everyone has a different opinion of how large of a Time Machine disk you need - read this and decide for yourself
http://pondini.org/TM/1.html
Pondini is an expert when it comes to all things related Time Machine.
3. Read my other post (from 2:00pm) - it explains that if you do the Command+Option+R right after you power up the system (and before it's booted up) you can do the Mavericks install if that is what your system came with. You need an internet connection for this to work as it downloads the version of OS X that came with the system when it was purchased. Are you the original owner? Do you remember if it came with Mavericks or ??? You will still need to have your App Store user login and password to complete the download of the real OS X. See these two articles for a good explanation of the Internet Recovery as well as the regular Recovery methods (it talks about "Lion" but think it's the same for all OS X versions with the newer recovery type installs):
http://9to5mac.com/2011/07/20/what-is-os-x-lion-internet-recovery-and-how-does-i t-work/
http://osxdaily.com/2014/12/14/reinstall-os-x-mac-internet-recovery/
4. Yes, you need an external disk to use Time Machine effectively. You can install Mavericks - IF the system was purchased with Mavericks (I've no idea how Apple knows or keeps track of this, but they do. You can try the Command+Option+R during power-on and you will see the "Starting Internet Recovery" message with a sort of revolving globe icon and a status bar showing how much time remains to download the installer. I just tried it on my old MacBook from 2010 and it looks like the Recovery Boot mode - only the download image came off the Internet/Ethernet connection instead of off the disk - much slower than booting off disk, but if you have a good internet connection speed shouldn't take too long (it's probably the same 650MB image stored on the Maverics Recovery partition (or something very similar).
All recent Apple computers can do Internet Recovery - plus a few older ones that have updated firmware. Here is a link explaining which older Apple systems can do the Internet Recovery if their firmware is updated (your Retina system is fairly new so it works with Internet Recovery without needing any firmware update):
Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support
Good luck - ask more questions if you wish...it's important to understand how all this fits together so you don't end up with more problems than you started out with. -
3-4min bootup time after clean install of OSX 10.6.8 Please help !
I did clean install on my Macbook (Late 2009 model) using DVD, then I did software update to OSX 10.6.8. My macbook is taking approx. 3min 30 sec to bootup. Also, for any website that I load first time, it takes 15-30 sec to load. I have no applications installed yet. No startup items. I tried resetting PRAM, but no luck.
I don't know whats wrong with my macbook. Any help would be really appreciated!

Time Capsule & Clean Install iMac
Hi
I have 750GB of data to backup onto Time Capsule for its first run. It will take several days to do the first run. If I manage to do this, can I do a clean install on my iMac and use the data on Time Capsule, or will I have to start again? What I'm aiming to do, is safely backup everything to Time Capsule, then spend time removing my files. At the end of that, I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard. I had wanted to do a clean install, run Time Capsule, then add the files as needed. However, some of my files are huge iPhoto libraries that are up to 200GB! I have an external FW800 HD for SuperDuper! clone of the iMac. Apart from that, any advice is most welcome.wayne.andrews wrote:

Doubtful, at 75%. First, your Mac automatically and continuously defrags any file under 20 mb. Second, unless your disk has been much more full, and you manipulate lots of large files, the drive won't be seriously fragmented.
How can I check the fragmentation of the iMac?
There's no OSX tool for that, since Apple doesn't think it's necessary. The 3rd-party tools tend to overstate the importance of any fragmentation they find.
At the moment, I am stuck. I have managed to transfer everything that I may need onto the iMac. Most of the data is from Apple's Backup application (where files were backed up onto CD/DVD). For this reason, I have many duplicated files. I don't know where to start.
Do you mean you copied the Backup files? Or used Backup to restore them? Are they Full or Incremental backups? Restoring from them can be tedious, error-prone, and "iffy." Have you ever done any Backup restores?
I could do a clean install and add the files as I need them. Alternatively, I could backup everthing I have now and delete the files. Two ways of doing the same thing - adding or removing. Either way, it's a huge task sorting out the duplicated files, and removing what I no longer need.
I could really do with some advice on how to sort through files - not how to do it, but more a guide to a good strategy. What is the easiest, pain-free way of managing a good de-clutter in small chunks?
It depends on what sort of things you're talking about. If it's 3rd-party apps, erasing and selectively restoring will probably be a nightmare. Many such apps, especially the ones that come with their own installers, put various things in various places, besides the app in your Applications folder. Unless you know what and where all those are, the app may not work right, if at all. Worse, you may not notice that for quite some time, until you try to use a feature you haven't tested. Also, there may be some "leftovers:" background jobs that no longer have what they need to run, so they continually start, crash, and re-start forever, filling up your logs and using lots of CPU.
If it's pure data, such as a very large video library, you likely won't have those sorts of problems, but it would also be much easier to just delete what you don't want.
Without knowing just how much of what sort of stuff you're looking at, it's hard to give better advice. If you have a 2 TB TC, then I'd say back it all up and start deleting; the TC should have plenty of room to keep the backups for a long time. But if you move or rename folders with a lot of content, they'll be backed-up again entirely, so you may fill up the TC rather quickly.
However you approach it, I'd be inclined to also make a full "clone" before starting; check it by booting and running from it to be sure everything's there and working, then put it "on the shelf" in case you need it in a week or a few months.

Time to clean install OS X Mavericks?
I've had my MacBook Pro since the Snow Leopard era of July 2010. In 2011, I upgraded to Lion with minor difficulty. In 2012, I upgraded to Mountain Lion, but this time, I noticed a pretty drastic decrease in performance. I'm a little concerned about upgrading to Mavericks. I worry that an upgrade on top of an upgrade on top of an upgrade would further hinder performance. Would a clean install give me a noticable difference in performance, or am I okay to upgrade?
Thank you for your assistance. Here are the results of my diagnostic.

Simple protocol for clean install of lion
I have an older macbook (2007) that has started to do some funny things … including a fairly well documented problem that, to my knowledge, has no real solution short of a clean install. Even the local mac store recommended that I reinstall Lion if the problem persists. Well, the problem has persisted and I have a few other odd and annoying things that happen intermittently.
My computer is backed up with both Time Machine and cloned with CCC on separate external HDs. I also made a bootable install disc of Lion on an 8GB flash drive when I originally purchased and downloaded it. However, I am unsure about what the best clean install protocol should be. I want to (1) preserve my files and (2) minimize the amount of time/effort required to get my computer back up and running like it should. So, I was hoping someone could help me out by listing a simple recommended protocol for this situation as well as the important files/folders that I should preserve from my backups after wiping the drive clean and reinstalling Lion in order to essentially have my computer running like it was, minus the corruptions in the OS.First off, thanks to all for the quick responses. I really appreciate the input.
Ok, here's what it looks like I can do:
1. erase and install, either by booting into my recovery partition or from the Lion install disc I previously made on an 8GB usb drive. Then ...
2. restore data from my backup.
So, Time Machine will not overwrite the new system files when it restores my 'user' data, and the restored data should include all of my settings and preferences? Bookmarks for my browser? Keychain passwords? I only ask because I'd like to be prepared before diving in. I think I'm ready to give it a shot.
@Linc: I really appreciate your point of view. I purposely did not discuss the major problem I'm having because I didn't want to distract from the simple question I had with a complex problem. Since you asked, here goes: when I wake my mac from sleep, sometimes I lose my wireless network connection and sometimes I don't. If my connection is dropped, sometimes I can reconnect by manually selecting my network and other times when I manually select it, I cannot reconnect even if I enter the correct password. If this happens, I am forced to sleep the computer and wake it, which starts the whole process over again. If it does not reconnect to the network this time, I am forced to restart the computer if I want the network connection. Not good. Gets old quick. I have had this problem since Snow Leopard - hoped installing Lion would fix it. I have searched and read many discussion here and elsewhere regarding this problem and tried many solutions that have worked for some people and not others. None have worked for me. The only constant seems to be a clean install, which sees to work for most. I spent hours at the Apple Store. They even gave me a brand new Airport Extreme for free because they couldn't isolate and fix the problem, in hopes that might do the trick. Nope. In my opinion, I have spent way more hours than it is worth to fix this problem trying to avoid a clean install. Certainly, I don't know if it will work until I do it, but I'm at the point where I feel like it is worth a try. So, if you have the solution I've been waiting for, please send it along … I'm the kind of person who would much rather figure out and fix a specific problem (with some help) than throw in the towel. -
Full back up for clean install macbook
I need to do a clean install of my operating system. How do I KNOW that I've done a good enough back up so that I won't have lost anything?
So...I'll have everything? I was just checking. I have nothing chosen as an exclusion from Time Machine. My finder is not doing well, and Apple recommended that I do a clean install, and then re-install all my applications from their original disks slowly to see if the problem returns. I don't want to embark on this and discover that it didn't work or that I've overlooked something and that I've lost some of my stuff.
Thanks for the help.

Hey all,
My first official post (iirc), and it's one I'm hoping will have a happy ending (twss)! I currently run Adobe CC on my almost extinct MacBook Pro 17", and I have enjoyed making use of Apple's seamless migration when updating the OS or upgrading my hard drive. I've been doing this method for quite some time, but it seems that my puter is in dire need of a fresh/clean install. I recently purchased a bigger SSD and plan on re-installing everything in my system over the holiday break, but I was wondering if there were any steps I can take where I can backup my entire CC applications onto an external HD, rather than having to re-download everything from Adobe eating up my time and bandwidth. Will I be able to re-initialize the applications with the cloud?
I backup most of my presets & fonts on a regular basis, so that's not much of a concern, I would just really like to not have to download everything again once I'm done re-installing OS X.
Thanks and Happy Holidays!Answered my own question.... Adobe CC 2014 Direct Download Links: Creative Cloud 2014 Release | ProDesignTools

Continued Drop-outs--time for re-install?
I previously posted about a problem with drop-outs while running 10 or so tracks of EXS24 instruments (it's a dual-core intel machine, 2 gigs ram running snow leopard)...I was advised to check out several links to articles on the apple website & the one thing that helped somewhat is removing Audio-Unit Plug-in components (located in /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components)...
...things have improved, however, I'm still getting some dropouts...looking at the meters, it seems to me that some of the softsynths are overloading one of the cpu cores...I think something is funky with my EXS24's.
...the question now is: Is IT TIME FOR A RE-INSTALL of LOGIC?
Do I re-install all of Logic? Just the main program & soft-synths...what is the best way to do a re-install?Brian Breen wrote:

What is your *I/O Buffer Size* setting in *Logic Pro>Preferences>Audio>Devices*
...the question now is: Is IT TIME FOR A RE-INSTALL of LOGIC?
Do I re-install all of Logic? Just the main program & soft-synths...what is the best way to do a re-install?
No ,re-installing Logic won't help ,your problem it's not application related...unless you deleted something from the applications directory...which is not what happens here
For some reason your system can't handle what you are trying to do...
maybe add more RAM if your MBP can take it and make sure that your HD is not full as Eriksimon suggested in your previous post.

Installing SL right now but I didn't see option for clean install
Hi All,
just got my $9.95 SL cd by mail and I'm installing it now but saw the option to do a clean
install or for that matter an archive.
The only option was to check off for Quick time7 and
something else.
It's running it's course and I'll update but curious.
Thanks.

I guess it's semantics. as i understand it, it completely erases the previous system and installs a fresh new one so in that sense it's closer to the old archive and install, but it does not archive the old system so in that sense it's different. -
Restoring iTunes Settings For Clean Install
I have recently had to do a clean install of Mavericks to a reformatted drive. Because of significant issues with low level files on my previous installation, Apple has recommended that I 'manually' copy over all my data. The challenge with this when it comes to iTunes is that I had an extensive set of playlists, and not all of my tracks were located in the standard Apple "Music" folder.
I have a complete clone of my previous installation, so what preference and other files can I copy over to make iTunes look at feel like what I had before?
I know quite a bit about the lower levels of the Mac operating system, and even have some experience with UNIX, if this will help.
Thanks for any assistance you can lend me ...bj4mac wrote:
Thanks for your assistance. Do you mean that I should 'replace' the Music folder, now on my clean install drive, with the /Music/iTunes/, or that I should just replace the contents of the clean install drive's "Music" folder with the contents of /Music/iTunes/ from my backup drive?
Neither.
Copy the /Music/iTunes/ folder from yrou backu pto /Music/.
This puts the /iTunes/ folder back where it was.
You should end up with an iTunes folder in your Music folder.
Additionally, what about the many tracks which were outside my previous "Music" folder? Should I try and replace them to they exact location they were, hoping that iTunes will rebuild the playlists they were originally in?
Yes, put them back where they were.
Is there some reason they were outside the iTunes (and the Music) folder? -
Not sure but thought I would ask ? Are we able to make a copy of ML for a clean install. Some help Please !!!! Also can u go back to Lion ??

Lion is no longer sold by Apple, thus if you didn't make an installer for such, cloning is your only option.
Yes it is but you have to call them to order it.
But no need for the OP if he hasn't upgrade to Mt Lion yet.
Just use the Recovery HD to Redownload Lion to an external then create a Lion Install USB thumb drive.
