Time for more RAM: OWC, Patriot, others?

Hi all,
I recently upgraded from a 400 MHz G3 PowerBook with 1 GB RAM running 10.4.11 to a 2011 MBP with 4 GB running 10.6.7. Even with 4x the RAM, it seems to run out of free memory at about the same level of usage as my old system. I think the easiest solution is to throw more memory at it.
Does anyone have experience with either of these?
Patriot PSD38G1333SK

OWC 1333DDR3S08S
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S08S/
The spec sheet seem to report different things, like cycle time for OWC vs. refresh interval for Patriot. OWC specifies that it is 64-bit wide memory, while Patriot does not, though I would assume that the SODIMM pinout spec dictates that.
Does it matter much, or does it come down to price?
Thanks,
Scott

Just want to throw my $0.02 in on the Patriot PSD38G1333SK modules.
I just picked it up at Fry's for $89 (no rebate). Crucial was a little cheaper but only by $8 and I didn't want to wait for shipping.
The Patriot looks to be running smoothly. When I first installed it, I ran AHT for three cycles (1 Quick, then 2 Extended)--all passed OK.
CAS 9 latency on the Patriot modules, same as the Hynix modules that came with the i7 2.2Ghz MBP I just bought on Monday.
The speed difference is noticeable on bootup only, it shaved off probably 4-6sec approximately. I'm still running the stock 5400RPM Toshiba for now but the speed difference is pretty outstanding.

  • Modified start time for songs overlaps on to other songs

If I change the start time of a song in itunes, and I listen to the song on suffle with an ipod touch, other songs that I shuffle start with that same modified start time as the original song.
    That is,
Say I have a song, "Great Song" by "Cool dudes"
and another song "Terrible Song" by "Get this off your iPod"
And I set the start time for Great Song to be 0m 42s.  If I have my iPod touch on shuffle and this song is picked, it starts at 0:42.  If I change the song before this song finishes and Terrible Song is picked, it will also start at 0m 42s, despite me never changing its start time.
    How can I fix this?

    Hi Alonzo,
In the UK, you currently should be in GMT with Daylight Saving on. You'll need to correct the time on the phone (by moving it back one hour in Settings > Time & date > Time) when you have done this.
After this you'll need go into iSync, select your phone and from the Devices menu select Reset Device to re-populate the phone with the correct data.

  • Should I keep my MacBook Pro or exchange it for more Ram and SSD space?

    Hello,
I decided to purchase a MacBook Pro 15 inch with Retina display. I thought I would just bite the bullet and get it with the upgraded 16gb Ram and 512 SSD as I want this computer to last me at least 5 years. I don't know exactly what I will be using it for but potentially I will be running a small business with it as well as using it for photos, some videos and all the other things we all use everyday. This brought the total price tag up to about $2900 before tax. Way more than I wanted to spend, but again, I plan on this being my last computer purchase for at least 5 years...and this would be my only computer...not a secondary one but the primary one.
As I was asking the guy in Best Buy about any sales or discounts, he mentioned a MacBook Pro with retina display that was just retuned to the store by a lady that decided to go with a MacBook Air instead.  It had been opened but not used and was in perfect condition. The sales manager said he could sell that one to me for $470 off the normal price. The problem was, it was the base model and only had 8gb Ram and 256gb SSD storage. So, I had the option of buying the computer I wanted...that I know would last me for years and years, for $2,900 OR buy the base model for $1,729. What would you do?
I decided to buy the base model as it was just to good a deal to pass up. Now, 2 days later, I don't know if I made the right decision. I know that 256gb of memory is not going to last me very long...especially considering how much more space modern software takes up nowadays...and its only getting worse. My solution is to just buy an external hard drive and store everything I don't immediately need on it. But I don't know if I'm being realistic as maybe it will be a major pain to constantly have to carry around an extra storage device. Then again, even if I had the 512 SSD model MacBook, I would still eventually run out of space and need an external drive. Has anyone else relied on an external device for their daily computing needs? Is it a major nuisance or easy to get by with?
My bigger concern is that it only has 8gb of Ram and can NOT be upgraded in the future. 8gb ram is fine right now, especially with the flash drive and i7 quad core processor, but in a couple years, I'm afraid  it won't be enough and that ill be forced to purchase another computer. The sales manager said that because its a Mac and because of the "monster processor" that the 8gb of Ram will be more than enough for years to come. According to him, Macs require less Ram than PC's due to their operating system being much more efficient. (This is my first Mac so I'm a bit unfamiliar)
So this is my dellima, should I return the base model and buy the one I originally wanted or should I make do with the base model and be thankful for the great deal I was able to get?
Will the 8gb of Ram be enough in a few years? I realize that depends on what I'm using the computer for but, since I'm not sure what my needs will be in the next year, lets assume I'll be using it to run a small business as well as the typical storage of pictures and home videos, etc.
Bottom line, will the 8gb of ram be enough to prevent the need to buy another computer for another 5 years or so or do I need to suck it up, return the base model, pay the extra $1,100 and get the 16gb of ram I originally wanted?
Sorry for the long story, I just need some solid advice as money is tight and I want to make the right decision. I'd rather pay $1,100 extra now and not need to buy a new computer for 5-6 years than save the money now but have to buy a whole new computer in 1-2 years.  If however, the 8gb ram will still make for a solid computer in a few years, I will gladly save the money.
Thanks in advance for your help. ;-)

    Generally (and in my opinion):
    1) do not buy any computer you cannot replace the hard drive and the RAM in.
    2) do NOT (EVER, EVER, EVER) purchase RAM or expended hard drive from any vendor (like Apple, Dell, etc).  they mark up the RAM
purchase the lowest machine that will work for you and upgrade the RAM and hard drive down the road.    Just look at the price Apple charges for the upgrade from 4GB to 8 GB:
Apple is charging the (4GB RAM + $100) for the 8GB upgrade.  You can easily get 8GB for $100.  later you should be able to get 8GB for $60.
Same thing for the hard drives:
Applis charging the price of (500GB + $100) for the 750GB drive.  I just bought a 750GB notebook drive for $99
I, personally, would return the retina notebook for a MacBookPro that you can upgrade the hd and ram

  • Countdown Timer for Fileserv pauses when viewing other tabs, resumes when returned to tab. Is there any way to make the timer keep going?

Hi, when I use Fileserv to download files, it has a countdown timer like many file-hosting services. However if I go view other tabs while the timer is going, it gets paused until I come back to the tab and then it resumes.
For example, I download a file and the timer starts from 30 seconds, at the 25 second mark I view a different tab (lets say to check my email), and after about 40 seconds or so I come back to the Fileserv tab and it's just counting down from 25 seconds.
This didn't happen before when I was on 3.6.
Is there anyway to keep the timer going? As 30 seconds is precious enough to check an email or blog while I wait.

Maybe it keeps working if you tear off that tab and open it in its own window.

  • Been on hold two different times for more that 30 minutes....Followed the instructions and my phone said that activation has failed.  FRUSTRATED

how do i activate my 6? I followed the instructions and it said my activation failed...now on hold for 2 different times.  been screwing with this for 3 hours.

I highly doubt that the VZW CS reps are sitting by idly letting people stew on hold.  I'm sure there are loads of people just like us that have questions, but they don't know how to get online and figure things out.  Yes, people like this have iPhones.  My point is, I wouldn't blame this on Verizon's Customer Service.  If you're truly frustrated, take the suggestion given and try it.

  • MacBook goes dead as soon as power cord is unplugged..time for a new battery or other problem?

For months now my MacBook has been iffy with the battery percentage. It will show 2hours then within the next minute 25 min then 10 minutes then it shoots all the way up to 3 hours. Now it won't stay on unless the power cord is plugged in...and says "not charging" at the top of the screen. Am I in need of a new battery? Or is it something else? Have never had this problem before...my MacBook is approximately 3 years old...

You are posting in an iMac forum. I'd recommend re-posting in the MacBook forum.

  • With intel core 2 duo it's possible more RAM? in early imac 2006

I could change the processor core duo per core 2 duo of my IMAC, that is from early 2006... the cuestion is: the description of this mac says that only works with 2 gb of ram, but with the new processor it can upgrade this RAM, per 3 or 4 gb?
    Thanks for your answer

You actually were able to change the processor to a Core 2 Duo in that machine? I've only heard of one other person who did this, but it did not work too well for them. Also, they did it so they could upgrade to Lion and that did not work either: the App Store recognized the machine ID as one with a Core Duo and would not allow them to install Lion. So if you changed yours to a Core 2 Duo to get Lion, your efforts were wasted.
As for allowing for more RAM - since people do not replace processors on iMacs in general, no one here will probably be able to answer your question.

    Hi All,
I have a requirement of creating a Common BOM (bill of materials and few components to some organizations at a time) for more than one Organization.
    How can i do this.
Can any one help me on this.
    Thank you,

    Amar,
Create org hierarchy and use hierarchy when running common bill program rather than org by org.

  • Run time for a query

    Hello all,
Can you please tell me how can I see the total running time for a query?
What other transactions besides ST03 and RSRT with statistics on?
    Points will be assigned
    Thanks
    Ramona

    Hi........
You can use ST03N -> BW System Load
Depending on the time frame you select, you get historical data or
    current data.
To get to a specific query you need to drill down using the InfoCube
    name
Use Aggregation Query to get more runtime information about a
single query. Use tab All data to get to the details.
(DB, OLAP, and Frontend time, plus Select/ Transferred records,
plus number of cells and formats)
Also You can get it in RSRT,RSRTQ...

  • Lead Time for manufacturing and its corresponding Quantity in Material Mast

    Hi all ,
Do we have any feilds in SAP Material Master
    which are useful for
    1) Lead Time for manufacturing
    2) Manfactured Lead Time Quantity
if the mateials are produced inhouse.
    thanks
    ksr

    Dear,
There are no such a fields in material master, But in MRP 3 view you will get theotal replenishment lead time field.
Which use for the produced in-house if the replenishment lead time is included in the availability check:
This is nothing but the  in-house production time and, if available, the goods receipt processing time.
Also refer this link to calculate the in-house production time correctly,

  • Opinions - time for a new computer?  need more RAM, Time Machine back up full - get new computer?

I am in a quandary.  My early 2008 iMac needs more Ram.  I could upgrade from 2gb to 4gb for around $60.  My 1T external hard drive for Time Machine is full and I do not relish the idea of it erasing old data if I continue to use it this way, but then I am shelling out more money for a new hard drive.  Can get new 3T hd for about $200.  Is it worth it to shore up my computer?  I have recently upgraded OS to ML and it is really starting to act sluggish.  I hate the idea of having to transfer everything over to a new Mac and therefore new OS.   I need a working computer every day for business for my husband, so it would be impossible to go without a computer while things are being transferred over - and how long would it take for me to do that.  Plus, will files and photos be transferred over exactly as I have organized them?  I have spent a lot of time organizing bookmark folders in Safari, mailboxes in Mail and albums and folders in iPhoto.  Don't want to start from scratch again.   Also don't like the idea that the new iMacs don't have a slot for dvds and cds, playing and burning.  I do a lot of this kind of thing.  So then I would need to buy a separate thing for doing this as well as the computer itself.  Have wondered how many things have changed from ML to Maverick.  Another big learning curve???
Would really appreciate any thoughts and opinions.  I am a senior citizen and don't know how to sort through this.  One thing I think about is that I don't know how much longer I will be living and able to do computer work. I know everything is a risk, but would like some advice even if it is only an opinion.

It's probably time for a new machine. You won't have to start from scratch. Migration Assistant will bring over all of your data and apps (some may need to be re-activated using product keys). Depending on how much you actually have, a few hours should be all it takes over Ethernet.
Time Machine should continually erase the oldest backups when it needs space for new ones.
You might want to do both. Upgrade the RAM in the old machine to the max it will take, and buy a new machine as well. If your husband really needs a machine available all the time for business, having a 'spare' is a good thing.
Check out what's available in the refurb store. They are virtually indistinguishable from new retail stock and come with a full warranty. You can save hundreds.

  • Does more RAM for Macbook mean less battery time???

i am currently using my macbook with 1gb ram, but i am thinking about an upgrade to 2gb. i read and searched the internet for this quest in google, but i didn't get a satisfying answer.
my simple question is: does more ram also need more power and _do i therefore have less battery time?_

BTW: I got my RAM from macsales.com

Here is how to install memory:

  • RAM upgrade and other queries for 13" Macbook (Late 2006)

    Hi everyone,
I have read many posts on these forums (very informative I must add) but I need your help in clarifying a few issues. I have a 13.3" white Macbook which I purchased in May 2007 - 2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, 80 GB HDD. I plan on upgrading from my current OS 10.4.11 to 10.6 Snow Leopard in a few weeks. My issues:
    1. Upgrade RAM to the max allotment. I read on Apple support (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1651) that I can only go up to 2 GB RAM for my MB model. However various folks in this forum as well as 3rd party vendors dispute this for up to 3.3 GB RAM - via two 2 GB RAM memory. Can someone validate this? I plan to purchase memory from OWC.
    2. My laptop fan is running more frequently than normal. Should I worry about this? I don't see any abnormal usage in Activity Monitor. Any thoughts?
    3. I have clocked 312 battery recharge cycles on my MB battery. A couple of times the laptop shutdown when there was 15 mins charge remaining. Anyway the past few weeks I have kept the power cord plugged in since I don't move much. I read somewhere this bypasses the battery once the charge is complete. Is this true? Is there a battery recharge cycle count when its advisable to replace the battery?
Thanks in advance for the help guys. My MB has served me well and I really want to continue on this machine rather than doling out more $$ for a new MB.
    Best,
    Wal (SD)

I have about 20GB free space out of a total of 80 GB HD. At this moment I don't plan on increasing the HD space. But after installing OS 10.6, if the fan speed issue continues then I may invest in a new HD. My assumption is installing OS 1.6 will free up some space and I am hoping that will keep me comfortable.
Reg. my battery, yeah it has lasted for over 2.5 yrs. So I am happy about that. But I hear what you are saying. Perhaps I will get a new battery. Are there any longer lasting batteries introduced for the late '06 MB? A full charge lasts me about 3 hours - assuming I don't run any data or video intensive apps.
    Thanks again for your advice!
