Time is Really Passing the eMac by...

Sad but true. Even though I have the fastest eMac made, 1.42 ghz G4, I find that simple tasks are now taking much much longer. Web pages constantly pin the CPU at 100% usage. Youtube videos stutter and stumble. After much service, it is becoming too much trouble to use the eMac. If funds allowed, I'd upgrade today. Perhaps in a few months.
I've optimized my system using every suggestion found here. >25% free disc space, 2 gigs ram (that helps a lot!).
Safari 4.0 is a major consumer of resources. Often hitting 100% doing yahoo email! It's a sad fact of life that simple tasks require so much CPU power.

I'm at OS 19.3.9 (historical lack of funds) and wantd to upgrade to 10.4 then to 10.4.11 (this way recommended for some reason) but I find that OS 10.4 seems no longer to exist. Also PS Elements 2 cannot run on 10.5.
I see that you have 2Gb, but there was some doubts expressed - due to over heating - about going to 2GB. So it seems that 10.5 is the way to go.
However I see that you are at 10.4. Why have you not gone to 10.5?
I'm interested because I don't want to upgrade and then find a can of worms.
One of my reasons for upgradeing to .5 is that suddenly Facebook has upgraded their system and I cannot see my or anybody elses videos with 10.3.9 because Flash Player 9 will not run under 10.3.9.
It may seem to be a tr4ivial reason for upgrading but I had intendede to upgrade to .4.11 and call it a day but events have overtaken me. I do a fair bit of video shooting/editing so my late arrival to wanting .4 was because I had to get a 1TB external HD because of my videoing.
A convoluted story I know, and like you, when my eMac goes belly up and reaches for its zimmerframe I too will be forced to dig deep - for which I'm filling my piggy bank now.
So any words of wisdom will be gratefuuly received.
Cheers

  • TO_DATE - How do I pass the date and time to the function

    Hi,
I am writing a PL/SQL code. The code has a simple cursor,
For the criteria, I am using a column called 'created' which is a date column, and the to_date function.
I would like to pass the date and time to the to_date fuction as a parameter, date_value, as shown below.
    CURSOR opty is
    select a.name, a.id
    from s_opty a
    where a.created > to_date(date_value, 'DD/MM/YYYY HH24:MI:SS');
I've tried declaring a bind variable,
    date_value date := '&1'
    but no joy.
    Any ideas would be welcomed.
    Thanks in antcipation

    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> If you are not very particular about the time, you can use TRUNC on both sides like :

  • Passing the queue name to the sender JMS adapter at run time..

    Hello Experts,
I have a scenario where PI is to pick data from MQ queues. The message type coming from queues is same and the procession needs to be done with PI is also the same. That's the reason why we want to have only one interface processing the data for all the queues.
My question here is that is there any way where I do not put the queue name in the sender adapter at design time and based on the data availability in the queue let the sender adapter know the queue name to be processed at run time.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    - Rajan

Unfortunately for JMS Sender CC it is not possible, but other way around is possible. I.e. you can dynamically choose the receving queue names by using ASMA "JMSReplyTo" in JMS Sender CC.

  • App-V 5 Full Infrastructure Apps take long time to stream to the client

Hi was wondering if anyone has the same issue as i am or knows a fix for this, below is my problem and the troubleshooting i have done.
    Overview of problem
App-V 5 apps delivered via App-V 5 full infrastructure take a long time to stream to the client and this means the user has to wait if they try and run an application before it has streamed to the client. Users sometimes have to
wait 2 or 3 minutes for an application to stream and this is about 40 times slower than basic SMB and HTTP transfer tests show the system is capable of (see performance results below).
App-V 4.6 apps delivered via App-V 4.6 full infrastructure and HTTP streaming are fine.
    Overview of environment
    App-V 5.0 SP1 Full Infrastructure.
    App-V servers are running Server 2012 on Hyper-V 3 or ESX 5.1 with 2 x vCPU and 4GB RAM.
SQL servers are a SQL 2012 cluster.
Separate servers for SQL, management, publishing, content and reporting.
Management, Publishing and Content servers have two servers per role and NLB to provide load balancing. So 7 servers (2 x Man, 2 x Pub, 2 x Content, 1 x Reporting)
Two further sites with 2 x Pub and 2 x Content each. All publishing servers pointed at the load balance address for management.
    Content delivered via HTTP
Clients are physical desktops and laptops running Windows 7 SP1 x86 and Windows 8 x86
    App-V client is 5.0SP1
Clients are pointed at their nearest publishing server NLB via a script which looks up the client IP address and uses PowerShell to configure the publishing server
Content is streamed from the nearest content server NLB by setting the PackageSourceRoot to the nearest content NLB (via the same PowerShell script above).
App-V apps delivered per-user via AD group. One AD group per application. Approximately 200 App-V apps published so far - will eventually reach 400 as we sequence more. About 9000 users.
    Analysis performed so far
Servers not heavily loaded. CPU averages 5%. Lots of RAM free. Very low disk IO. Problem also occurs out-of-hours so we are 99.9% certain that server resources are not a cause.
Streaming performance is the same from all 6 content servers and all 3 NLB addresses (tested by changing the value of PackageSourceRoot). Wireshark used to confirm packages are really streaming from the correct location, enforcing
our belief that the problem isn't at the server end (unless all 6 servers are affected).
Streaming via both HTTP and SMB2.1 is approximately the same (tested by changing the value of PackageSourceRoot between http://xxxx and \\server\AppVContent).
Wireshark used to confirm we really are using the protocol we think we are using.
All clients exhibit the same behaviour. Issue reported by many users. 5 test PCs chosen at random at all 3 sites confirmed to have the slow streaming problem.
Slow streaming from both Hyper-V and VMware ESX servers.
    Client not heavily loaded.
Affects all App-V apps although it obviously affects the larger ones more.
All App-V apps have a Feature Block 1 setup.
If we copy the ".appv" file from the server to the client via either HTTP or SMB then it's reasonably quick (up to 480Mb/s). So we don't believe the network or servers are at fault. For example:
We can copy a 149MB .appv file via SMB from the content server to the client in 5 seconds.
We copy HTTP download the .appv file from the content server using IE on the client in 5 seconds.
But if you ask the App-V 5 client to fully download the sequence then it takes 2 - 3 minutes.
The App-V 4.6 client takes about 8 - 10 seconds to fully download a similar sized application.
App-V 5 publishing works fine - when a new user logs on they get their list of application straight away, it's just the streaming which is slow.
Once the App-V app has streamed locally it runs fine and with a decent performance.
Looking at a Wireshark trace of the streaming you can see that the slow performance is due to the transfer stopping and starting a lot. You only notice this when you zoom into the performance graph a fair bit.
Each time the HTTP server stops sending traffic, it doesn't start again until the client sends a "TCP Window update". Each "stop" is of a different length, but just taking a few from the middle I get 0.06s, 0.11s,
    0.13s wasted etc.
I can see that it's the client stopping the transfer by reducing its advertised TCP Window Size. I'll provide an example:
Server sends 9 x 1514 bytes. Client responds with an ACK and a Window size of 54016 bytes (256x211)
Server sends 11 x 1514 bytes. Client responds with an ACK and a Window size of 37888 bytes (256x148)
Server sends 10 x 1514 bytes. Client responds with an ACK and a Window size of 23296 bytes (256x91)
Server sends 15 x 1514 bytes. Client responds with an ACK and a Window size of 1280 bytes (5 x 256)
Server stops sending (I'm guessing because the client advertised Window size was less than a single packet's worth of bytes)
    <0.1 seconds passes>
Client sends a "TCP Window Update" re-advertising a TCP window size of 65536 (256x256).
    Server starts transmitting again
So the way I see this is that the App-V 5 client is controlling the transfer speed by utilising TCP Window flow control. The trace was taken at the client end so there's no room for anything on the network to be fiddling with flow
control (and we've confirmed there are no traffic shapers in the loop).
We've also tried streaming directly from the local client by copying some App-V 5 apps down to the client, creating a SMB share on the client and changing PackageSourceRoot to \\localhost\AppVContent (i.e. so we are streaming directly
from the client to the client - to remove the network from the equation) and there is only an improvement of 5 to 10 seconds. So we know it's nothing to do with the network or the servers.
We've tried turning off TCP auto-tuning on the client with:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
and turning off TCP chimney offloading (which is off anyway because the NIC doesn't support it and Netstat -t output shows "InHost" for offload state for all connections) with:
netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled
    and nothing has improved.
So we've now focussed on the extraction of the .appv (ZIP) file on the client.
Using Windows Explorer it takes 75 seconds to extract the ZIP file
Using 7ZIP it takes 9 seconds to extract the ZIP file
Yeah we've always known that the Explorer ZIP engine is terrible. That's why we use 7ZIP or WinRAR on our clients.
So we've started to wonder if the problem with the slow App-V 5 streaming is because the client is downloading the .appv file and extracting it as it goes along in a single thread. If the App-V 5 client is using the same terrible
ZIP engine that Explorer does then that would explain the slow performance. The "download" appears to take a long time because the client is using TCP flow control to slow the transfer since it's extracting the .appv file using a very slow ZIP engine
and it's all in a single thread.

    Guys,
Just wanted to give you a brief update basically close this thread as Answered.
We had submitted 4 App-V 5 Bugs to Microsoft and these were reproducible and an explanation was given on work around to them. Microsoft
sent down a App-v developer to have a look at our problems. They said they will try and include the Bug fixes in SP2 which should be out in a few weeks or they will definitely be included in SP3.
In regards to the slow streaming it all came down to the Disk IO.
We found that you could simply enable "Turn off
Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device", then start streaming the app and then disable "Turn
off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device" immediately after
(we don't want to leave it on) and that basically fixed the issue.
But a normal user would not have permissions to do
this, so a code was written to enable and disable this option.
Apology for not going in detail, like my opening thread, its very late.
but if you would like a detailed analysis please message me.
I would like to Thank the Talented Consultant who designed and implemented are App-V infrastructure who found the bugs and created all
the work around and who also emailed the detailed analysis of the problems to Microsoft that got them interested.
Simon Bond from Ultima Business Solutions.

  • FX 5200 TDR128 driver not pass the windows XP logo testing

    Hi there,
I've just bought an FX 5200 TDR128 VGA Cards, the problem is I cant install the driver because the driver is not pass the windows XP logo test (the error massage box says yhat the device driver is not designed with windows XP logo. So what can I do now? My VGA wont work properly if I do not install the driver which designed for microsoft windows XP logo.
    Best regards

A MS signed (WHQL - Windows Hardware Quality Labs) driver is not a requirement - MS may make a big deal about it, but do you really think that MS has the time to test each and every driver (and their many revisions) that are made by all the hardware manufacturers in existence??!
Fact is, by the time MS finally 'certifies' a driver, odds are the manufacturer has built a newer and better one (especially in the case of graphic card drivers).  Odds are, MS only really tests certain driver revisions as submitted to them by the author.  (and, if you happen to install older hardware, the last driver available for that hardware may very well not be signed - what would you do then?!)
That said, you can ignore the warning message that Windows gives you about a driver not being signed.  In fact, you can disable the driver check altogether in - Control Panel -> System -> Hardware tab in Device Manager section click the 'Driver Signing' button and set to 'ignore.'
Finally, after all that, the current nVidia driver (v.56.64) is WHQL signed - browse to it here or go directly (Win XP/2K) here.

  • Things for the eMac!

    Hi guys.
I've posted a few times on this board. I'm back again. I was wondering if there are any good things for protection or just cool to have for the eMac or macs in general. I have speakers, iSight, and the titl and swivel stand. Is there anything else I should add? I'm really enjoying my eMac. I was thinking of selling it but have decided to hold on to it. It's a great machine.
    Thanks!

Among "things for protection", an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) is definitely a worthwhile addition. Even the low-end models from reputable vendors such as APC will provide protection against brownouts and momentary power glitches, which are more disruptive than outright long-term power outages.
Higher-end UPS models offer more runtime and additional port coverage (e.g., cable coax and/or Ethernet ports included in the UPS chassis). Top-of-the-line UPS models with transformer-based power conditioning offers even better protection against nearby lightening strikes (keyword being "nearby" --- nothing's guarenteed to protect against a direct strike), or against high-voltage power lines going down in a storm and dropping across the household voltage lines to your place.
It comes down to how much money you have to spend. I've seen entry-model APC BackUPS 350 mA models on sale as loss-leaders in bricks-and-motar computer stores for around US$40 (which is less than some surge protectors); at the other end, medical-grade power-conditioned UPS systems (e.g., ONEAC) won't readily post their prices online (apparently on the priciple that if you have to ask you can't afford it :-o).

  • Job scheduling(passing the values to the child program)

when i'm trying to schedule a background job(using job_open job_submit and job_close) i'm passing the values of the selection screen(parent program) to my child program using set parameter id. And trying to get the values using get parameter id in the cild program.
But the values of the parent program are not being passed to the child program what may be the cause for it?

    rathan,
    Why con't you use
    SUBMIT... [VIA SELECTION-SCREEN]
    [USING SELECTION-SET <var>]
    [WITH <sel> <criterion>]
    [WITH FREE SELECTIONS <freesel>]
    [WITH SELECTION-TABLE <rspar>].
When you start an executable program, the standard selection screen normally appears, containing the selection criteria and parameters of both the logical database connected to the program and of the program itself (see Direct Execution - Reports). When you start an executable program using SUBMIT, there are various additions that you can use to fill the input fields on the selection screen:
    SUBMIT... [VIA SELECTION-SCREEN]
    [USING SELECTION-SET <var>]
    [WITH <sel> <criterion>]
    [WITH FREE SELECTIONS <freesel>]
    [WITH SELECTION-TABLE <rspar>].
These options have the following effects:
    VIA SELECTION-SCREEN
The selection screen of the called executable program (report) appears. If you transfer values to the program using one or more of the other options, the corresponding input fields in the selections screen are filled. The user can change these values. By default, the system does not display a selection screen after SUBMIT.
    USING SELECTION-SET <var>
This option tells the system to start the called program with the variant <var>.
    WITH <sel> <criterion>
Use this option to fill individual elements <sel> of the selection screen (selection tables and parameters). Use one of the elements <criterion>:
<op> <f> [SIGN <s>], for single value selection
If <sel> is a selection criterion, use <op> to fill the OPTION field, <f> to fill the LOW field, and <s> to fill the SIGN field of the selection table <sel> in the called program.
If <sel> is a parameter, you can use any operator for <op>. The parameter <sel> is always filled with <f>.
[NOT] BETWEEN <f1> AND <f2> [SIGN <s>], for interval selection
<f1> is transferred into the LOW field, <f2> into the HIGH field, and <s> into the SIGN field of the selection table <sel> in the called program. If you omit the NOT option, the system places the value BT into the OPTION field; if you use NOT, the system fills OPTION with NB.
IN <seltab>, transferring a selection table
This addition fills the selection table <sel> in the called program with the values of the table <seltab> in the calling program. Table <seltab> must have the structure of a selection table. Use the RANGES statement to create selection tables.
WITH FREE SELECTION <freesel>, user dialog for dynamic selections
To use this option, the called program must be connected to a logical database that supports dynamic selections. In the calling program, use the function modules FREE_SELECTIONS_INIT and FREE_SELECTIONS_DIALOG. They allow the user to enter dynamic selections on a selection screen. One export parameter of these function modules has structure RSDS_TEXPR from the RSDS type group. Transfer the values of this export parameter by means of the internal table <freesel> of the same structure to the called report.
WITH SELECTION-TABLE <rspar>, dynamic transfer of values
You need an internal table <rspar> with the Dictionary structure RSPARAMS. The table then consists of the following six fields:
SELNAME (type C, length 8) for the name of the selection criterion or parameter
KIND (type C, length 1) for the selection type (S for selection criterion, P for parameter)
SIGN, OPTION, LOW, HIGH as in a normal selection table, except that LOW and HIGH both have type C and length 45.
This table can be filled dynamically in the calling program with all of the required values for the selection screen of the called program. If the name of a selection criterion appears more than once, the system creates a multiple-line selection table for that criterion in the called program. If the name of a parameter appears more than once, the system uses the last value. Note that LOW and HIGH have type C, so that the system executes type conversions to the criteria of the called program. This is important for date fields, for example. Before your program is used in a live context, you should check it using the VIA SELECTION-SCREEN addition.
Except for WITH SELECTION-TABLE, you can use any of the above options several times and in any combination within a SUBMIT statement. In particular, you can use the WITH <sel> option several times for one single criterion <sel>. In the called program, the system appends the corresponding lines to the selection tables used. For parameters, it uses the last value specified. The only combination possible for the WITH SELECTION-TABLE option is USING SELECTION-SET.
If the input fields on the selection screen are linked to SPA/GPA parameters, you can also use this technique to pass values to the selection screen (see Passing Data Between Programs).
The following executable program (report) creates a selection screen containing the parameter PARAMET and the selection criterion SELECTO:
    REPORT  demo_program_submit_rep1.
    DATA number TYPE i.
    PARAMETERS      paramet(14) TYPE c.
    SELECT-OPTIONS  selecto FOR number.
The program DEMO_PROGRAM_SUBMIT_REP1 is called by the following program using various parameters:
REPORT demo_program_submit_sel_screen NO STANDARD PAGE HEADING.
    DATA: int TYPE i,
          rspar TYPE TABLE OF rsparams,
          wa_rspar LIKE LINE OF rspar.
    RANGES seltab FOR int.
    WRITE: 'Select a Selection!',
    SKIP.
FORMAT HOTSPOT COLOR 5 INVERSE ON.
    WRITE: 'Selection 1',
         / 'Selection 2'.
    AT LINE-SELECTION.
      CASE sy-lilli.
        WHEN 4.
          seltab-sign = 'I'. seltab-option = 'BT'.
          seltab-low  = 1.   seltab-high   = 5.
          APPEND seltab.
          SUBMIT demo_program_submit_rep1 VIA SELECTION-SCREEN
                          WITH paramet eq 'Selection 1'
                          WITH selecto IN seltab
                          WITH selecto ne 3
                          AND RETURN.
        WHEN 5.
          wa_rspar-selname = 'SELECTO'. wa_rspar-kind = 'S'.
          wa_rspar-sign = 'E'. wa_rspar-option = 'BT'.
          wa_rspar-low  = 14.  wa_rspar-high = 17.
          APPEND wa_rspar TO rspar.
          wa_rspar-selname = 'PARAMET'. wa_rspar-kind = 'P'.
          wa_rspar-low  = 'Selection 2'.
          APPEND wa_rspar TO rspar.
          wa_rspar-selname = 'SELECTO'. wa_rspar-kind = 'S'.
          wa_rspar-sign = 'I'. wa_rspar-option = 'GT'.
          wa_rspar-low  = 10.
          APPEND wa_rspar TO rspar.
          SUBMIT demo_program_submit_rep1 VIA SELECTION-SCREEN
                          WITH SELECTION-TABLE rspar
                          AND RETURN.
      ENDCASE.

  • How to pass the data from a input table to RFC data service?

    Hi,
I am doing a prototype with VC, I'm wondering how VC pass the data from a table view to a backend data service? For example, I have one RFC in the backend system with a tabel type importing parameter, now I want to pass all the data from an input table view to the RFC, I guess it's possible but I don't know how to do it.
I try to create some events between the input table and data service, but seems there is no a system event can export the whole table to the backend data service.
    Thanks for your answer.

Thanks for your answer, I tried the solution 2, I create "Submit" button, and ser the mapping scope to  be "All data rows", it only works when I select at least one row, otherwise the data would not be passed.
Another question is I have serveral imported table parameter, for each table I have one "submit" event, I want these tables to be submitted at the same time, but if I click the submit button in one table toolbar, I can only submit the table data which has a submit button clicked, for other tables, the data is not passed, how can I achieve it?
    Thanks.

  • So my droid razor hd wont go pass the red droid start screen, just spins and spins

So my droid razor HD wont go pass the droid start up screen,it just spins, it does let me power it down by holding the volume down and power keys, but that's it

From your posting it's sounds as if you have a "Boot Looping" Droid problem.  They can be the end of a phone's life but there is also some things you can try to save your phone . Give this a try and you may also need to have the OS  re-flash.
First of all remove the battery from your phone or tablet, and wait for almost 2 to 3 minutes. What if your device does not have removable battery? Well, then you can power off it for almost 4 to 5 minutes.
Now you need to boot into Stock Recovery Mode by Pressing and Holding the Volume Up+Home+Power buttons at the same time for a few seconds until you see the Android System Recovery menu on your screen.
You’ll be using the Volume Up/Down to switch between different options and Power button to select your desire option.
Now select the Wipe data/Factory Reset option and confirm it.
Additionally, take also the following actions:
    – Wipe cache partition
    – Go to Advance and Wipe dalvick cache
Now Go back to the main Recovery menu and Select the option Reboot System Now to Reboot your phone.
