Time laspe trouble...

in photoshop CC 2014 i'm trying to create a 'new video layer from file' but when i open the folder with images (all gopro jpegs) i get this msg.
"could not complete the new video layer from file command because the footage is not a recognized format"
in the tutorial i'm watching the files are tiff... however does this make a difference? the box is clicked 'all formats" and jpegs are listed...
does anyone have an explaination for this error msg?

Although technically you could back up the computers to each other, that isn't a normally recommended procedure. An external hard drive is normally used. I would recommend 2 external hard drives so each computer will have two backups, which is safer than having just one since hard drives can fail or backups can become corrupted. When set up, the computers will alternate between the 2 external hard drives. You can back up all 3 computers to one hard drive.
The hard drives need to be 2 - 4 times larger than the total amount of data, from all 3 computers, you are backing up.

The initial backup can take a long time, you just have to be patient. I would do the initial backup one at a time so you don't have 3 computers trying to write to the same drive at the same time.

  • Time Lapse Troubles...

    Hey guys,
I'm a student and am getting into some more serious editing. I've been working on a snowboarding edit for this season however am having some troubles with my timelapse.
                        - Ok to start I would like to clarify, what would be the best program to create and edit a time lapse?
I have photoshop cs5.5 extended, along with premiere pro and after effects.
                       - My next question is if Photoshop is the case, why is my sequence exporting in such a low quality?
Basically I upload my 2500 11 MP pictures with a frame rate of 59.94 and an exporting settings of:
After an hour of exporting I get a low quality 13 Mb mp4? Such as:
(I did do HD cropping 1920 by 1080 px)
                        - What would be the best exporting settings for the work flow?
I have tried multiple file types however the only file that had relatively good quality was the .MOV. From my understanding that was just because they are not compressed files and                              the fact the final out put was 17 GB. I figured I would use an mp4 H.264 because that is what my camera (GoPro HD Hero 2) records in, and i figured that it would be the best format                              for later editing in premiere pro so it fits together. long story short what would be the best file output, for high quality and later editing.
-What is the difference between the multiple .mp4 file types etc.
For example in the video settings menu of the exporting settings there is Mp4 then Mp4 (ISMA) and then basic, improved, H.264 and so on.
I believe thats about everything. Thank you so much ahead of time. I Apreciate it verry much. Thanks
    ~Brian

I think you'd do better asking in the Premiere Pro and After Effects forums.   I understand that a common application for constructing a timelapse vide is Quicktime Pro, but After Effects will do it.

  • HT201250 Time Machine trouble

I'm having trouble with time machine backups on lion.  I set up one of my external drives as my backup in snow leopard weeks ago, it was working fine, now in lion it shows in the preferences that the external I was using for tm is  on the exclude from backups list and my backup is not on my computer, as a matter of fact when I look in the backups folder the only backup TM is today's.  Does anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks Pondini,  Its all very confusing.  My imac drive has about 1TB of data, my time machine drive BFBUD is a 2tb external, and the other items on that drive add up to 1.7tb
That means there's only 300 GB available for backups?    No wonder there isn't room to back up your 1 TB internal HD!
Time Machine needs considerably more space than the data it's backing-up, to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you.  See  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #1.
And, it's not a good idea to keep other data in the same partition as your backups.  See #3 in the FAQ.
I'm trying to exclude some of the 1.83TB from the time machine bu drive from backup...
The Time Machine drive is already excluded (automatically).
One more issue, I connected my Iomega TM backup drive from my other computer to move some files and I think time machine thought it was looking at the backup drive.  I cannot select either BFBUD (big friggin back up drive) or Documents drive from the exclusion list.
Again, it's already on the exclusion list.  And since it's listed in gray, that means it's not formatted for a Mac and Time Machine cannot back it up, so you can't remove it.
Sounds like you need a 2 TB drive to dedicate to your backups.

  • Big time library trouble

Help me out please.....having trouble with my iTunes library
let me give a bit of background....
I just bought a new Samsung laptop....running windows 7. Previously, I was running iTunes on my old HP laptop, running WIndows XP. I backed up my iTunes library manually on an external hard drive by simply copying the entire iTunes folder from "my music" to an external hard drive. Whenever I had to reinstall windows, I then just drop the backed up iTunes folder into the my music folder and all my music, artwork, playlists, play counts, ratings, everythign was all there and it worked beautifully. Never had an issue.
Now these new Samsung laptops have a feature where they are manufactured with a partitioned hard drive. I have 1 500GB hard drive, but it's partitioned into 100GB for drive C, and 350GB for drive D. The intent is that the operating system and upgrades and key software go on C, and your data and other games and programs you install go on D. So I installed iTunes on D, and trid to put my music (the backed up iTunes folder) on D. Well it did not even see the library. SO I started digging and playing...since I had a backup I knew I would not ruin it for good. I first learned that if i put the music in C, even though the program was on D, it worked just like normal. But I want my data on D. So I also went into the XML file where they have all the song data and playlist data, and replaced ever occurance of "C:" with "D:" THis caused my music to be visible, but the playlists and the song counts/ratings were lost, even though they were still listed in the file. Also, it made me reimport the music, wiping out all the dates that they were imported or last played. The artwork disappeared as well.
All I want is the following: I want the program, and all the music on my D drive. And I want to get it from my backup, without losing the artwork or song count/rating data, and without losing playlists or having to start over from scratch. I spent many dozens of hours in front of my computer getting all that stuff right, and while I can just play it off the C drive with no problem, i really want it on D because my music library is the single biggest thing I have on my computer.
ANyone have any ideas? Is there a way from within iTunes to move everything over to the D drive without losing anything?

Your library was on *C:\<some path>\iTunes* and you copied this folder to an external drive, i.e. *X:\<some other path>\iTunes* correct?
If so ALL you needed to do was copy the iTunes folder from X: to D: and then, having installed iTunes used the SHIFT-start method to open the library in its new location.
As long as the main iTunes library folder contains the media folder you can move the whole iTunes folder to a new path or drive and it will work.
There is no need to uninstall & reinstall iTunes - it will not be useful. Simply copy the backed up version of the library file *iTunes Libray.itl* into your iTunes folder on D: (you should probably also copy the *iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb* and sentinel files but it's probably not the end of the world if you don't.) I realise that the backed up library used to look on drive C: for its files, but when it starts up it will notice that the .itl file is on a different path and will attempt to look for the files in the local iTunes Music/iTunes Media folder. If they are there then it will work it all out. You may still need to update the folder location in preferences though it normally updates that automatically.

  • Time Machine -- trouble restoring a file

I need to restore a Quicken data file (GorfFinances.qdfm) that was saved by Time Machine to my backup drive  about a month ago.
Whenever I try it, a window pops up with this message: "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permissions to access "GorfFinances.qdfm."
Yet, when I check permissions on the backup file from within Time Machine and compare that with permissions of the current file as checked in the normal  Finder window, they are exactly the same -- as follows:
         Name                              Privilege
         Gorf (Me)                         Read & Write
         wheel                              Read & Write
         everyone                         Read & Write
Why am I getting that message and how can I fix the problem?
    Thanks,
    Gorf

I just had this problem with testing restoring a Quicken file from Time Machine. (I'm on OS 10.6.8 with Quicken Essentials 1.7.4.) Although I found lots of advice online about changing file permissions in different places, the less-extreme methods didn't work for me. Then I found a comment about restoring the directory/folder that contains the Quicken file rather than just the fil, and that worked like a charm. I test restored the entire Documents folder to my Desktop, and all 3,000+ files restored successfully with no complaint about insufficient permissions for any of the files, including the Quicken file.
I've since moved my Quicken file into a subfolder so that, if I ever need to restore the Quicken file for real, restoring that subfolder will take much less time than it took to restore the entire Documents.

I exchanged my hard drive from a 160GB to a 500GB recently. All went well with the installation of the old programs and transferring all my old files back from my time machine.
Now a week has gone by and I want to back up my computer to the time machine and the computer can't find it. It's plugged in and all seams to be on but it just can't to find it.
I really don't want to screw anything up here and loose my old backups in the time machine so figured better ask for help before something goes terrible wrong..

Eeek! A week? If you make many changes, you really should back up more often.
Are you getting a message? If so, what?
Try just re-selecting the drive via Time Machine Preferences. If that doesn't work, do a "full reset" of TM per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

    Good plan!
You may lose some, or many, old backups anyway, though; the new drive will be backed-up in full, so if there isn't room for that, TM will delete old backups trying to make room. If your TM drive isn't at least 2.2 times the size of the data on your system, TM will probably delete all but the last backup, then fail for lack of space. If that's the situation, consider getting a larger external HD for your backups.

  • Time Zone Troubles.

I'm suffering a collection of problems to do with my date and time preferences.
Firstly, in the Date & Time preference pane, Time Zone tab, it won't hold my GMT London setting and keeps defaulting to Monrovia - Liberia, or any number of other places in Africa.
Secondly, No matter what time zone is set in the preferences, that zone's time is adopted by all other time zones. For example, if the time zone is set to GMT, and I open up a few world clocks on the dashboard, say Los Angeles, New York and London, they all say the same GMT time.
This is also affecting iCal which is showing all time zones as floating, and keeps asking if I want to change my time zone to Monrovia - Liberia every time I launch.
Does anyone have any ideas how I could fix this?
    Thanks.
    Paul C.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Paul,
You could move to Monrovia, Liberia. It would certainly solve the issue.
You could also try creating a new account, name it "test" and see how your time & date prefs work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • Time machine troubles

right now i am using a 160 gig external HD to back up my mac with time machine....
i have about 120 gigs of stuff on my mac...
i want to back up my computer every few weeks.....time machine keeps telling me there is not enough room....how do i make time machine only keep one back up? or just back up what has changed?????
    help

TM does only backup what has changed. However, with 120 GBs of data to backup you don't have much free space on the backup drive for incremental backups if you have a lot of files changing hourly or daily. TM does not overwrite changed files with each hourly backup. You might help things along by adding items to the Exclude list that you don't need to include in the backup such as the System and Library folders. If you use Parallels or VM Fusion you should exclude their pseudo-drives. Otherwise you need a larger backup drive. Given the archival nature of TM backups you should start with a drive at least twice as large as your startup drive.
You can change the frequency of TM backups by downloading a freeware utility called TimeMachineScheduler from VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
    Otherwise, take Mort's advice.

  • Time Machine trouble, tried everything !

    Hi,
I have a Mac OSc Version 10.7.5, with 2.5 Ghz Intel Core i5, with a hard drive that is 500 GB, i"ve used 180.73 and have 318.52 free space.  I'm trying to do a backup using Time Machine using a 3TB, Seagate Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0.  I keep getting the following error message, and neither Seagate nor Apple Tech Support can figure it out.
    Can anyone help ?

    Sorry about that.
Not your fault. The screenshot is showing now. The forum software is quite unreliable lately.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • Time code trouble

I am having difficulty (in that I can't do it) importing Mini DV footage into FCP 4.5.
These were "one-pass" tapes...and there appear to be numerous time code breaks. It is really giving me and my Mac headaches. Any advice.
These are pretty long clips and I am using "Capture Now."

Sounds like you're doing a capture now instead of log and capture. Back in FCP 4.5 and lower days, when you didn't tell FCP how big a capture it might be doing (either by giving it an in and out, or by using Limit Capture Now in preferences), FCP would allocate the ENTIRE drive (because you were telling it that it had to be prepared to capture unlimited data).
Now. New question. You're not capturing to your system drive, are you? Because that only compounds the problem, by filling your system drive and potentially locking up your system when Virtual memory and system processes run out of space.
SO - this seems to me to be UNRELATED to QuickTime. Seems like a perfect example of using Capture Now with FCP 4.5 without Capture Now being limited. Potentially made worse by capturing to your system drive.
    Any matchup there?

  • Time remapping trouble

i have footage that was shot on HVX200 720/60p
in the time line i go to remap the timing for slow motion effect and it get half way thru clip then freezes [video that is] but the play head is still moving and audio [music] is still playing ** HELP**
i got to get this project out like ASAP
    thanks

    Hi,
I too am having this issue. We are shooting with a HVX202, and are running into the same problems. For those who have asked questions in this thread already, it is after a render, and the speed effect is constant not variable.
The quickest solution is to re-render. An easy way to do this is to turn on your clip overlays (in the bottom left hand corner of the timeline) and then effect the opacity of the clip. Drag it down a bit, then drag it up. This means that you will have to re-render that clip.
once it has re-rendered, check if it has rendered ok.. if it has great, if not, render it again.
i have also found that this issue can extend across a series of clips. I had a set of three P2 shots in the middle of a bunch of varicam, and when I rendered the lot, the first P2 shot froze about 2 seconds into the shot, and this freeze frame continued for the rest of the 3 shots.
I have a few theories about why this is and how to avoid it completely, but I will do a quick test now, and report back.
    Cheers
    Alister

  • Time capsule trouble shooting

I am having continuing problems backing up with time capsule. I set it up quite a few times, really fumbled through and finally got it working but then it just quit backing up and I can't seem to get it going. Im preparing to start school and really need to get this in working order. Any help is appreciated.

Ok, the place to start is Pondini.. read through the FAQ and particularly Troubleshooting.
    See http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You can link to FAQ via the meu at the top.
Load the widget ( Look at A1 in reference) as that gives you actual log access.
Note the errors.. you cannot really work with.. general, it doesn't work.
    My recommendation.. start afresh.
Factory reset the TC. Maybe even erase the old backups.
Plug the TC into the computer by ethernet.
Turn off wireless in the computer.. so this is setup in total isolation.
Then do TM backup. Setup so it has several hours available overnight.. make sure the computer is powered and turn off all power saving if a laptop.
It should be able to fully handle the backup at about 60GB/hr
If you have issues, you need to verify the source and target hard disk.
    See A5.
And reset of TM is also a good idea.
    See A4.
How old is the TC? They get unreliable at about 3years. Sometimes earlier.

  • Time capsule trouble with mountain lion

Ever since I moved and had to resetup my network, and then upgraded to Mountain Lion, I have not been able to run backups on my TimeCapsule with Time Machine. It wont recognize any of the backup files on the two drives, and says the disks are too full to add another backup. That's because it's not accessing the existing ones to do an incremental backup. Neither does Aitport Utility accept the TimeCapsule password. Please help!

If you have a clean install of Mountain Lion it will remove the 5.6 utility.. but this is still better for setups than the new one. .. certainly for Gen4 TC or earlier.
The setup of the TC manually from v5 utility.
Make sure you use all short names.. for the TC itself and for wireless.. I recommend different name for 5ghz as well.
Use WPA2 Personal security and fix wireless channels.. check 11, 6, 1 in that order.
For 5ghz try around 40 and around 150.. doesn't matter which one.
    Use ethernet if wireless fails..
You will hate me but older Mac with ML upgrade that went badly.. sorry get some help to clean install. the wireless in the Mac itself is then the issue.
