Time limit on admin account?
I was wondering if there is any way or any third party app which will allow me to set time limits on the admin account. I want this because if I make an other account or guest account it doesnt keep the icon dock customized and it doesnt show XBMC the way it is customized on the admin account and I really dont want to re set up XBMC on another account.
thanks

How can I set a time limit... on my own account?
I've been getting sick of staying up until 3 AM then waking up at 11 AM every day. I think the best way to solve it without sheer will is to just set a time limit on my computer. I know you can do it in Parental Controls, but it only lets you to it to non-admin accounts that aren't yours. Is there a way to set them for your own account via some sort of workaround? Thanks.
Hello Chuck67322,
Thanks for contacting Apple Support Communities.
You could schedule you computer to shut down through the Energy Saver preference. See this article to find out how:

Safari closes in my admin account each time I open it
Hi there everyone
I have a MacBook that i have had under 4 months. I have recentlt began to have trouble with it. It has begun to run slower than I remember and in Safari it stalled for a long time each time I would use it. Yesterday Safari within my admin account would close after 15 seconds or so and give me a error report saying that Safari had to unexpectadly close but everything else on my computer is ok.
I looked on the forum and saw other people problems. I got some good information from it and managed to set up another account in which Safari has worked fine. I need now to know how I can get Safari to work again in my admin account.
I have tried moving the folder from the HD to the desktop. It still crashes.
I have tried deleting the icon from my dock. It still crashes.
not sure what to do now. any advice please. I can post the error report next post if this will help.
ThanksHere is my error report. Please help. Thanks

I have chosen to fil migrate from old ibook to new MacBook Pro using Time Machine after establishing admin account. I now have two admin. accounts and wish to delete the later one and transfer files manually. I am worried I will loose both accounts. ??
Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant. If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

in regard to Time Machine.
I have two accounts on one Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8. One account is an admin account, the other is a standard user account.
When I initially implemented Time Machine I was logged into the Admin account. I allowed Time Machine to erase the drive and backup the computer. Is the standard user account contents also backed up?
Also after I completed the Time Machine backup session, I turned off Time Machine and removed the portable hard drive. I plan to return in to Time Machine after being away from the portable hard drive for approximately a month. After a short interruption of approximately one month, when the Macbook Pro is reconnected and Time Machine is turned back on, will Time Machine create a new instance of a backup? WIll the back up contain the standard user account changes?Time Machine backs up by default all the user accounts.
When you reconnect the backup drive after one month, Time Machine will do an incremental backup and it might take a while minutes to hours depending on how much has been changed. With a gap of a month, Time Machine will have to do a lengthier than normal survey of both drives to see what has changed, so it might take some time preparing for the backup. The backup will include everything that has changed since the previous one. -
Time Machine wants admin password when restoring in a standard account
I've just migrated from a PowerMac G5 (running Tiger) to a new iMac. The PowerMac had a single admin account only. On the new iMac this has been migrated over and changed to a standard account and an extra admin account has been added.
I've set up Time Machine with an external drive and it did the 1st full backup OK from within the standard account. However, every time I try to restore a file using Time Machine it asks for the name and password of an administrator! If I give the admin name and password the restore completes OK, but I can't stop it asking for admin credentials each time.
I have checked that all files in the standard account are owned by that account (I used chown -R in Terminal to be sure!). So why does Time Machine want an admin password when restoring a file owned by the standard account back into the same standard account?!Peruse Best Practices and Setup new Mac; then, consider starting over, reinstalling the OS and using the setup assistant to do the migration, resulting in one admin user account and no conflicts. Then, reinstall any optional software so you're back to the factory condition and a properly migrated state.

I have iwork on two computers, but my account doesn't show record of it for my being able to reinstall on the new computer. Is there a time limit? I tried airdrop, but it won't let me use it.
Sounds like you installed iWork from before there was the Mac App Store.
If you installed it from a Family DVD you are entitled to install that on 5 computers and can do that from the DVD.
If not then you need to purchase it from the M.A.S. and will be able to install it on any of your computers using the same Apple I.D. However Apple is promising a new version before Christmas so it may not be a good time to buy now.

Duplicate Admin accounts on restoring from Time Machine backup
I need help to remove duplicate accounts, created after restore from Time Machine Backup.
Here is the situation:
1. I was running SL on a Mac Pro with Time Machine backup. I had 5 User Accounts on the Login Window: Shared (Admin account), Dear Wife (DW, also Admin), Kid1 (managed), Kid2 (managed) and Guest (standard), and two 750 GB hard drives, HD1 and HD2.
2. Mac Pro would not boot past the Apple logo with spinning icon.
3. After talking to with Apple Support, it turned out that HD1 had crashed. I took it in to the Genius Bar, where they checked and confirmed HD1 crash and took it in for repair.
4. Apple replaced HD1 and reinstalled SL.
5. I picked up the Mac Pro. At home I reconnected TM and restarted.
6. Upon restart, I clicked on restore from TM backup and there was only 1 TM backup visible to select. After several hours of Transferring Information, about 700 GB was restored
7. Upon finishing restore, I saw the same Login Window as before crash, with the same 5 accounts - Shared, DW, Kid1, Kid2, Guest.
8. Issue: From the Login Window, logging into Shared and clicking on HD1>Users, I now see: Home Icon with Shared1, and four additional folders: Shared, DW, Kid1, Kid2
It seems I now have duplicate Shared accounts in the User folder - Shared1 with the Home icon, and a separate folder with name Shared.
I cannot "Move to Trash" Shared, since I get the message: “Shared” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by Mac OS X.
When I go into System Prefs>Accounts: I see My Account: Shared, and Other Accounts: DW, Kid1, Kid2, Guest. After unlocking the accounts, and right clicking on Shared for Advanced Options, I see:
User: "Shared"
-- Account Name: shared
-- Home Directory:/Users/shared1
Question: How do I consolidate or get rid of the duplicate Shared/Shared1 account? I have 350 GB of video/pictures/music in each of these accounts, which is unnecessarily eating up the new HD1.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!I solved the duplicate account problem.
I had used Setup Assistant to restore from TM Backup and that gave me the duplicate accounts, i.e., method used was:
http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/19.html
After carefully reading Pondini's FAQs, I instead used the Restore and install Method, i.e.,
http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/14.html
No duplicate accounts anymore, problem solved. -
INVALID_TICKET account-time-limit-reached when logging into any of my room
I get the following error message when trying to log into any of my rooms. What do I need to do? I already tried to create a new room, but it did not resolve it.
A system error has occurred. We have been notified.
Error Code: INVALID_TICKET account-time-limit-reachedIs there the upgraded account with no limitation. What is the price for that?
Another question, I got the exception like that.
But I can't know on which line the exception occurs on my code.
How can you catch such an exception?

Unity Connection 8.5.1 ES 16 web admin account recovery
Hello,
I have a client with a Unity Connection 8.5.1 ES16 version and they lost access to the Unity Admin web page.
I tried the steps to recover the password but it is failing, and the account doesn't seem to exist anymore.. I did a SQL query I found on another post here and it did not list this account anymore in the nonsubscriber querry, I also tried the utils cuc reset password command on the account several times with several passwords that matched the password criteria and they always failed resetting the password.
So I found another post and it had other query to use nonsubscriber account and use that, I managed o log in to the unity admin page with account called "UnityConnection" but it saids "Not Authorized" for all functions.
How do I add rights to the UnityConnection user or create another web admin account from SSH/CLI? I'm thinking I need to engage TAC in the morning and have them gain root access to fix this up. I did find a few bug ids on this but the workarounds don't work either and those were for 7.1.x.
Thanks, ErickI was hoping not to have a Nested ESXi setup, initially I started to setup my Lab machine as a Bare Metal ESXi host, the free ESXi vsphere client has a 6 Core Limit per CPU and I have 2 CPU's with 8 Core's each and was not happy to lose 2 Cores per CPU as a limitation, so I read up and tried ESXi 5.0 which really messed up things for me, after ESXi 5.0 install My system started to act up and would boot up and sit at a Blinking Cursor forever, spent a week researching and gave up when I tried installing 4.1 again only to find out 4.1 would work either ! sucked real bad and I guess I just decided to give Workstation a try, minor glitches, But I will give it a try and setup a nested ESXi within my workstation, I know it has something to do with the OVA template and the Hardware specs that Unity Connection looks for, crazy thing is Unity Connection Works right now, I just have to start Tomcat manually everytime I boot up my lab system. Will keep looking for answers will I try the nested setup - Thanks Matt

I just purchased a one year old iMac. How do I create a brand new admin account?
I just purchased a one year old iMac. How do I create a brand new admin account?
The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received those media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
3. Other issues
If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like. -
How to make an exception to RDS session Idle Time Limit?
A little bit of background:
We are running WYSE Thin Clients to connect to a RDS server farm at our company. We have set the Idle Session Time Limit to 12 hours, in Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration (in Connection --> Properties --> Sessions tab). This limit
is a site requirement.
The issue: We would like to configure a few accounts to stay logged into the RDS server indefinitely, past the 12 hour limit. How can we do this without changing the time limit for everyone?
I have tried a script to simulate mouse movements/key presses at intervals on the client session to trick RDS, but Remote Desktop Service Manager does not show that the script affects the idle time for that client. Is there another automatic way to simulate
user input to keep the client session active? What kind of hardware interrupt is RDS hooking into to determine that a human input has been pressed? A script would be the least intrusive to our infrastructure so if it is possible this is definitely preferred.
I've heard that Group Policy may be a solution here - but our local IT department do not have admin access to the Domain Controller for our site, it is managed by a third party. However, if I were to solve this using group policy, what would be the
steps? I would appreciate a step-by-step walk through if it is possible. We would have hundreds of users that need the 12 hour limit applied, and only a few that needs the infinite logon - so please keep practicality in mind.
Thanks in advance to anyone who helps.Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
In your case, I would like to suggest the steps for you. Yes, you need to take this successful via group policy.
You can create 2 group: Just for reference:
Group 1- MinLoginTime
Group 2-MaxLoginTime
Add the required users to particular group.
Users upto 12Hrs- MinLoginTime
Users above 12 Hrs- MaxLoginTime
Now need to apply group policy setting on this required groups.
Group 1- MinLoginTime:
Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions-
Enable -Set 12 Hrs
End Session when time limits are reached- Enable
This is because it will disconnect the session of your users who reached to 12 hrs.
Group 2-MaxLoginTime:
Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions-
Not configured\Disable
If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, this policy setting is not specified at the Group Policy level. By default, Remote Desktop Services allows sessions to remain active for an unlimited amount of time.
You can find the above setting option under below mention path.
Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Session Time Limits
User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Session Time Limits
Note: These Group Policy settings will take precedence over the settings configured in Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration. If both the Computer Configuration and the User Configuration policy settings are configured, the Computer Configuration policy
settings take precedence.
More information:

Hope it helps!
Thanks.

Extending time limit of Parentally Controlled by standard acoounts
When reaching the defined time limit of an administered account the user's time can be extended "on the flow" by the administrator. OK
However, my wife likes to be enabled to extend the child's time limit without being an administrator. She has a standard account, only.
Our question is: how to enable (a) standard account(s) to extend the time limit on demand. Is it possible to do so by defining a related item within /etc/sudoers,
and what is the corresponding (hidden) command line of the pop-up control panel?
Kind regardsLooks like you might need to build up your wife's confidence (using computers) a bit! We men do have responsibilities, don't we!
I believe it's possible to keep a log of the internet pages/sites visited. To some extent Apple achieves this in Safari with its history of sites visited. A friend had a daughter who was accessing pornographic sites. She was surprised when tackled about it - not realising that the visits were automatically logged!
I've just looked at the help pages for parental controls. You get these by opening System Pref/Parental Controls and clicking on the ?. There are a lot of cross-references to read to cover many of the possibilities for the administrator. It seems that the basic requirement for good control & monitoring of a child's usage is to establish an account for the child. Having done this you can then use your admin password and the parental controls system preference to set many aspects of the child's access. You can also choose to monitor this from a remote computer. I recommend that you scan through the descriptions of what can be done and pick out what you want to use.

Parental Controls time limit ends too soon
For Time Limits in Parental Controls, how does OS X decide when the account is in use?
I setup a managed account for my son on a MacBook Pro running 10.6.8.
It is set to 3 hour limit on weekdays.
Problem is that sometimes the timer gives its usual 15-minute warning after less than one hour of use.
Sometimes I do a fast user switch to my admin account. Later that day he does fast user switch back to his account.
Does the time in my account after fast user switch pause his timer?
I hope the timer can be paused without completely logging out of the account.
Thank you.in the parental controlled account click on the time in the menu bar and it will show time remaining in the pull down menu.

Just bought a second hand MacPro early 2008 running Mavericks. How do I reset it to standard, deleting previous owner admin account?
The previous owner seems to have cleared most of his stuff but I can't make changes as it's asking for the admin password!
Is there a way to reset the MacPro back as if I was logging on for the first time so that I can set it up as my computer? The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.

d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID.
