TIME MACHINE ACTING BADLY WITH THIRD iMAC

I am on my third iMac now and TM still acting strange. First iMac and using Time Machine when looking through Mail, TM would lock up the computer. A hard reboot was necessary to get things working again.
Second iMac just would shut down, power off all by itself. TM and two mail accounts did not function properly. Going to the second Mail Account I was unable to navigate forward and backwards in Time. Going back to first Mail Account would be fine, but when switching to second Mail Account, TM would stop going forward or back.
Third iMac I get the same results with TM, that is, when navigating two mail accounts TM would get stuck and not move forward or back in time. Is there a chance TM doesn't like having two accounts to look through? Anyone else have an issue like this with their iMac? My external drive is a Lacie and is formatted for Guid.

  • How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac

How do I use a Mac Mini + Airport Express + Time Machine disk to backup another iMac?
The question pretty much says it all.
I have a Mac Mini with an attached 3TB Hard Drive used for Time Machine Backups.
I have an Airport Extreme base station which services that machine plus several others.
I would like to backup my new iMac and a MacBook Pro to the Mac Mini.
What do I need to do on the mini to export that hard drive so that it can be used as a Time Machine target from the other systems?
    All systems are running 10.6.8.

Well you would have to do backups over a network which is much slower and has highest chance of becoming corrupt. I think your best option would be to get an apple time capsule to act as a network and back if thats how you wanna do that

  • Use time machine to save both the iMac hard drive data & an external one

Can i program time machine to save both the iMac hard drive data & an external one

Yes, but it's not advised because it's placing too many backups into one hardware basket, also it will greatly shorted your TimeMachine states where you can go back in time to undelete a file.
It's better to have two backups, each on seperate hardware of each drive.
So if you have a boot drive and a external drive, you should have a clone drive and TimeMachine drive of the boot drive, and a backup drive of the external drive. (or two depending how valuable the data is)
If you drop a drive, or knock it over while it's running, all the data could be lost.
With only TimeMachine as your backup, if you drop or lose it, or if it gets stolen, it takes two backups with it.
A clone and a backp of the external drive stored safely off site is ideal, update it once a week or bi weekly as needed.
A clone is bootable, and is exactly like your boot drive, up in seconds.
A TimeMachine can only boot to restore to a new drive if your boot drive dies for some reason.

I thought the backup whilst asleep was only used on Mountain Lion.. but perhaps it was also introduced with Lion.. anyway it is only enabled on later firmware.. in latest laptops.

  • How can I restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. Using Migrat

I would like to restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. When I tried using Migration Assistant it only gives me my internal hard drive as an option to restore to. The internal hard drive on my macbook isnt large enough to store the files.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive

  • Do time machine back up with HD attached to mac, then change HD location?

I want to do my first time machine back up with the HD directly attached to mac (faster) then take that HD and connect it to my Airport Extreme (dual band) 802.11n router for subsequent periodic back ups (as future back ups, unlike the first one, will be far smaller, obviously).
    Is that possible?
If not, what else should I do?
Ethernet directly to the router (a pain for my situation, but possible)

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
    Is that possible?
Not without a lot of hassle. Time Machine manages backups on a locally-connected disk completely differently from how it managed backup on a network disk. It's possible to convert between the two schemes, but it's not easy.
If not, what else should I do?
Ethernet directly to the router (a pain for my situation, but possible)
I'd back up to the disk while it's connected to the AirPort Extreme, but connected via Ethernet for the first backup. It might minimize the pain if you do that overnight.

  • HT201250 Time Machine comes up with my Finder, not my history. How Come?

Time Machine comes up with  my Finder, not my history. How come?

If you aren't using an application that supports the Time Machine interface, Time Machine will show Finder by default (Desktop folder).
That's the screen where you can navigate through your backups to restore files. See “Restoring data from Time Machine backups” > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427

  • I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8 and have problems with the backup Disk for Time Machine disconnecting itself with the message that I ejected it improperly.. It ejected itself - why?

I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8 and have problems with the backup drive to Time Machine ejecting itself and so does not automatically backup the way it is meant to do. It is connected with an USB cable to my iMac. What could cause this - malfuntioning drive?

The "iLife" apps are not part of any Mac operating system install and are a separate purchase.
Once you get past 10.6.6 you can purchase and download iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie. iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued.
Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and higher include the App Store application which is what you use to purchase Lion.

  • My time machine backup was created on iMac with Mountain Lion and my new iMac has Mavericks installed, will I be able to restore a backup from time machine to new imac and all applications work ok

time machine backup to new iMac

Yes, however it's always wise to update your apps to ensure you have the most up-to-date version. Use Setup Assistant to migrate your data, apps and settings to the new iMac, simply follow the on-screen directions. If the new machine has already arrived and you have already run Setup Assistant, connect the TM backup to the new machine and run Migration Assistant (a cousin of Setup Assistant) and follow the on-screen directions. You can find Migration Assistant in Applications - Utilities - Migrations Assistant or you can use the keyboard shortcut of Command + Spacebar and type "Migration Assistant".

  • HT1175 3TB time capsule not working with new iMac

I have a 3TB time capsule that's c. 2 years old. It worked perfectly with my old iMac. I bought a new 27" one when it came out this year and since the time capsule will not work.
I had to clear all the data as a starter. Now it gets a little into the backup taking c. 1 day then resets. It's connected via ethernet cable and has been told to join an existing network.
Currently it says it's backing up 922,498 items, after 2 hours (this is the third attempt, it resets then has no record of the old backup) it says 10kb of 789.44 GB - About 4,664,440 days remaining!!
To clarify I'm trying to use Time Machine with the Time Capsule.
    Please help!!

You have made a mistake in the setup.
You do not "Join an existing networking" and use ethernet.. they are mutually exclusive.
What you are doing is backing up over double hop wireless which is slowing to a crawl.
You need to put the TC into bridge mode.. and plug it into the main router by ethernet. Then use wiretess to the TC if you are too far away or ethernet if you are close by..
As soon as you put the TC into join a wireless network it deactivates the ethernet.

  • HARD DISK PROBS / TIME MACHINE not behaving with TC ? READ THIS!!!!

I had many probs with the hard disk and now have a happy healthy TC working great with time machine, so I though I'd share my experiences with others hoping it will save you my huge pain !
    i,
I've spent hours and hours trying to get the harddisk to work properly. Set-up was easy-peasy and the Airport works great for the internet. However, when trying to use time-machine and the hard disk it was a nightmare !!! Each attempt at the back-up failed after about 4 gig with a 'unable to mount volume' error. If I re-tried, it failed. Following some of the tips on the forums, I deleted the back-up file created by time machine on the hard drive and the initial back-up started successfully but failed after about 4 gig again (I had 96 gig to back-up). There are various fixes flying around -
*_ensure you have a name for your computer - should be short and no spaces or funny characters. Same goes for your name of the timecapsule. Some people are saying you should use an ethernet cable for your first back-up but that should not matter at all.*_ I took mine back to the apple store in the end - a mac genius downloaded all the latest patches (only came out 19th march) for the time-capsule firmware, time machine software and airport express. Still didn't work, so conclusion was the time-capsule was knackered !!! SO MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO GET APPLE TO REPLACE IT BUT MAKE SURE YOU TRY THE ABOVE FIRST.
New time-capsule was attached to my imac, started up great first time. My initial back-up ran through perfectly first time through wireless - it took 15 hours but I did have 96 gig to back-up. time machine sees this no problem so it looks like everything is fine. _*I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE TC WAS MUCH MORE QUIET AND LESS HOT.*_
    Good luck !!

    Hi,
Well, The external drive you have problem with is from a third party vendor :-)
I just looked up your model and we need to start over.

How do you connect it to your computer?
Is it plugged in to the router via ethernet and you access it over WiFi.
The drive needs to be setup as per supplied instructions.
The manufacturer says it is Time Machine compatible but from my experience I know this is not switched on by default.
The main reason why you cannot access it is you basically have to set it up for your use and most likely authenticate to it.
At this stage I'm quite sure there is no much wrong with that drive. It just need setting up.
Let me know if you have any instructions from Seagate which you can follow.

  • Why Time Machine stopped working with Time Capsule?

I have my Time Capsule connected via Ethernet to my iMac and wirelessly to my MacBook. Several days ago I got a warning on the iMac saying "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup - an error occured while copying - may be temporary - if persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disc."
Well, first Tim Capsule will not appear in Disk Utility, so that instruction is absurd. I went to Airport Utility but all that appears there is a graphic of T.C. with no buttons to do anything. My Mac consultant, who doesn't use Time Capsule or T.M, told me to hook it up using USB instead of Ethernet and it would appear in Disk Utility. Before I try that, does it make sense? He also suggested trying it wirelesslessly if that doesn't work.
Incidently, during all this time the T.C. wireless backups of the MacBook have continued unabated.
One forum participant urged me to take the T.C. to Apple to get it fixed. I don't think the drive is in that bad shape or why would the MacBook backups to its partition continue without problem?
I cleaned the Ethernet cable, unplugged both ends and plugged back in. T.M. indicated it had backed up twice, but now it has displayed exactly the same warning again, and says the last backup was several days ago. What should I do? I've zapped the Pram, run permissions on the iMac HD, and deleted all the browers' cache files.

My Mac consultant, who doesn't use Time Capsule or T.M, told me to hook it up using USB instead of Ethernet and it would appear in Disk Utility. Before I try that, does it make sense?
Ah, no. The TC's USB port cannot be used for that purpose.
I recommend another Mac consultant - Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini. Start with this: http://pondini.org/TM/C3.html
There are a variety of possible causes for that message, so exhaust all the potential remedies.
