Time machine after OSX reinstall

Hi,
I've backed up my mac with time machine for a while before deciding to reinstall completely Leopard for some slow down (guess for too much rubbish installed/poorly_removed)..
Then in order to avoid restoring EVERY preference file, application i didn't need, stuff that were in my previous installation that i don't need anymore, I decided to reinstall it completely and restore just some selected files(Address book, etc).
I've got some questions:
1) my username is the same in both installation, can I turn time machine on to run on the same disk and backup it was running prior to reinstalling?(ie: will it consider new files as part of the same system?)
2) is there a way to "move" the existing backup to another disk, in order to save it in case i would like to completely restore my system to the last backup?I guess copy and paste the Backup folder wouldn't work because all the hardlink stuff..
3) how does the "Browse for other Time machine disks" work? Will I be able to restore data from my previous backup even if I am in a completely different installation?
Thank you for your attention,
nick

Not sure just what you mean here. Did you reinstall OSX from your Leopard disc, or restore your entire system from your TM backup, using the Restore utility on your Leopard disc?
I mean that my system was just a mess.. I really needed a fresh install. So I reinstalled OSX from Leopard disc. I did it that way becouse restoring from TM would have restored a lot of crap I didn't need anymore.
Then I "restored" manually only those files I really needed(Address book, iCal,iPhoto library, itunes etc..)
Did I do right? Is it possible to restore just a selection of my previous backup?Would restoring from TM also restore startup time processes?
1) my username is the same in both installation, can I turn time machine on to run on the same disk and backup it was running prior to reinstalling?
Yes, but it will almost certainly do a new backup of everything you just put on the disk. TM backs-up what was "changed" on the disk, even if it's the same data as before you erased it. And it has nothing to do with usernames -- TM backs-up everything on your system, for all the users on it, unless you specifically excluded them.
ok, got it!
2) is there a way to "move" the existing backup to another disk, in order to save it in case i would like to completely restore my system to the last backup?
You can duplicate all the data from one TM disk to a new one (via the +Duplicate a Disk+ procedure in Disk Utility, or SuperDuper!), but not a single backup (and that wouldn't work anyway).
I'll try this on another HDD tomorrow...
But there's no need. You can do a complete system restore from any backup on your TM disk, whether it's the last, earliest, or anywhere in the middle (and even if it's a different version of Leopard).
I guess copy and paste the Backup folder wouldn't work because all the hardlink stuff..
No, it's because you'll most likely have all sorts of permissions issues.
3) how does the "Browse for other Time machine disks" work? Will I be able to restore data from my previous backup even if I am in a completely different installation?
Yes. Even if it's from a different Mac.

  • Restoring from Time Machine after complete reinstall

    Hi!
I have some odd problems in my system. Can´t do capital K without using capslock, flickering images, mousepointer freezes when I connect an external drive etc. I have booted from another system which makes all the problems go away which leads me to think it is something wrong in my software. Same problems if I create a new account and I´ve tried an Archive/reinstall without any luck. So I thought I would try a complete Erase and reinstall. I have a Time Machine backup which I would use but my question is. Is it likely that a transfer from my Time Machine backup, after my erase and install, will contain the problems I am trying to get rid of? Any better suggestions to try instead?
    Thanks

If the problems are with software and not hardware that's quite possible. but what you describe is pretty strange. if the problems were with the system files an archive and install should have fixed them. if they are with some user preference files making a new account would have fixed them.
You can try doing an erase and install and check if the problems go away. if the do try using migration assistant to import your user settings and home directory ONLY from the TM backup. and if that doesn't work there is always an erase and install followed by manual migration from TM. that's VERY tedious but will give you the cleanest system.

Most likely, some folders were inadvertently excluded from your backups, and as a result you can't restore your data in Recovery, Setup Assistant, or Migration Assistant.
Starting from a fresh installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. You should now be able to enter Time Machine and restore your user data from a snapshot.* I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.
You'll have another problem if this is a new computer, or if you erased the startup volume: Time Machine won't continue your previous snapshot series, but will instead try to begin a new one, starting with a full copy of all files. There might not be enough space on your backup volumes for that. There are different ways of dealing with that situation, depending on your needs. The easiest way is to set your backup drives aside, if possible, until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on them, then erase them and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on one or more empty storage devices. If that solution isn't workable for you, ask for instructions.
*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting
    Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu, which has an icon that looks like a clock running backwards. Select the backups of your computer by its previous name. If you don't have the Time Machine menu, open the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar

  • How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks

How to restore files from Time Machine after Clean Install of Mavericks. I know the data is there but seems unaccessable because I may have changed the Computer or Owner name. Is there any way to fix that now?

    Hi Linc,
my back-up data is managed by Time Machine; the actual data is on a second internal Hard Drive with a capacity of 1TB - not partitioned. I am using Time Machine and have access to all data backed up since Mavericks Clean Install but not the data prior to this date.
When I open the 1TB drive in Finder I can see a folder "Backups.backupdb/Sigi's Mac Pro/ followed by many folders of backup dates going back to 2010-09-20-103441 and up to 2014-02-07-142414 all followed with folder Macintosh HD.  February 7th  2014 was the date of the clean install.
These Backups are followed by backup date folder 2014-02-08-075554 with a subfolder of MacPro-320GB (this is the name I assigned to my Boot Drive during formatting; I suspect I should have assigned the same name as before ie. Macintosh HD) and 2014-02-11 with a subfolder Macintosh HD, these are the ones I get access to by way of Time Machine > Restore.
Weird thing is on Febr 11 when I relised my possible mistake and renamed the Bootdrive back to what it was initially ie. Macintosh HD despite this I have access to all backup data since the Clean Install in both folders MacPro-320GB as well as Macintosh HD but not to any data prior to the Clean Install.
Is there something that Time Machine knows and prevents access or is it simply a matter of renaming the subfolder 2014-02-08-07554/MacPro-320GB to ........./Macintosh HD?
I like to restore selectively and not everything - It was hard work reinstalling apps that were supposed to be the troublemakers (ref my discussion on Maverick problems) but I now need to get onto data specific to some of these apps as well as other data I may have missed. Long story? Yes and sorry.

You can't sign in because there is nothing to sign in to. For PSE 10 the only sign in was to photoshop.com, which has been dead and gone for a year and half. Just skip the sign in. Reinstalling will not change this.

Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant.  If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

  • Problems w/Time Machine after logic board replaced

Early January 2013 Apple replaced my logic board in my MacBook Pro.  Just the other day I had a reason to go the first of February 2013 to find something in My Documents.  There was NOTHING in Time Machine after January 3rd!  When I got my computer back I noticed My Passport icon was yellow.  Didn't know what that meant--but now I see probably something!
In trying to fix this problem I followed an Apple instruction which backed up SOMETHING ... but not in Time Machine because now there is nothing in it!  The instruction was under the heading "Attempt to repair your Time Machine's backup - using an external hard drive to store backups."
I would very much appreciate some direction to try to fix this.  THANK YOU!

Hello again:  Following the link above, I didn't see the examples that were shown so I put "Migration Assistant" in spotlight, it appeared and I followed what looked to be like what I should be doing .  It took about a half hour.  I really don't know what it was doing, other than Time Machine seems to be working again.  But where are all the things it was transferring for a half hour?  I am totally confused but just hope My Passport is still okay -- and that I don't really have to have anything from the past!
    Thank you.

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

    Hi Stavros0203,
When restoring your entire system from a Time Machine backup, it is restored to the state it was when that backup was made. See this article for reference -

  • Could not restore CS5 using Time Machine after changing to Mac OS8.3

Could not restore Photoshop CS5 using Time Machine after changing to Mac OS8.3 - the change was dictated by a power supply problem (now fixed) in my Macbook Pro - that has been fixed.

Restoring the Adobe application via Time machine is not a good practise and may cause other issues as well.
Please install the application properly rather restoring.

Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Do you mean the external hard drive is not mounted on the iMac desktop?
Check if Disk Utility sees the drive. Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. If the external shows up in the left column, select it and click on Mount.
If it does show up this way, I recommend using DU to Repair Disk.

  • How do I pull files from my Time Capsule after I reinstalled Mac OS X?

I use Time Capsule/Time Machine to back up my files for my Macbook. I have been having problems with my user account so made sure eveything was backed up, reinstalled and selected to delete all files (since it was backed up). Now, how do I retrive my Time Machine files? Do I need to configure Time Machine again? I was able to go into the Time capsule but it only showed today's data. Did I delete all previous Time Machine updates my reinstalling OS X?

iCloud does not provide general file storage in the manner of the late lamented MobileMe iDisk; it only handles syncing of calendars, contacts, bookmarks and photos taken on one device which are shunted onto the others. iWork and TextEdit documents can be shared to other devices by storing on the iCloud server but not other types of files (barring the odd fiddle).
If you want online storage of other types of files you will need to find a third-party alternative. This page examines some options:

  • Not a valid photoshop document after time machine recovery and reinstall of photoshop

After a time machine recovery most of my photoshop documents recovered fine, however there are a select few (and my most recent work unfortuantely) that seem corrupt. It isn't all of my documents. Trying to recover them again from back-up doesn't seem to be working. I did have to reinstall photoshop CS4 after the recovery.
I have seen similar questions on here but none of the solutions have worked. I've tried opening with other programs, I've tried changing the file extentions etc. If the files were just corrupt recovering them from time machine should fix the problem. Many thanks if you can assist.

    SaveChaos wrote:
…but it doesn't feel like corrupt files are the problem…
If it's only a few selected files that are misbehaving but others do open without problems, then you do have file corruption in each of those files.
Go back in time machine to the earliest possible date after each file was created and restore only that particular version of the file.
If that doesn't work, then considered the files irretrievably lost.  What kind of error message do they return when you try to open them?
In any event, it's imperative that you check the SMART status of your drive and Repair Drive (or at least Verify Drive) to check for a failing drive.
As an aside, taking a belt-and-suspender approach, it's my practice to supplement Time Machine with a clone of my working drive and daily backups of my files.  For some reason, I've had three Time Machine disks fail on three different Macs and locations in the last six months or so.
I had Time Machine disabled on all my Macs until I decided to give it one more test run on a 65-lb Mac Pro recently.  I'm not convinced one way or another yet, so all other Macs still have TM disabled for now. Time Machine is very intrusive, and the external TM drives run much, much hotter than external storage files—always a troubling sign in my book.
