Time Machine after Reinstalling HD
I upgraded to Yosemite, and my iMac started going slow. There was some sort of kernal_task. Long story short I gave up trying to fix it and I decided to erase the Mac HD and reinstall Yosemite. Everything is fine, except now I want to add some files and folders back to the Mac HD from Time Machine and I want to reactivate Time machine. My question is, if I activate Time machine to restore a bunch of files, will time machine reformat the external HD thus losing the contents?
Possibly a stupid question but I never had to restore from time machine.

No, it won't reformat the backup drive or your computer's drive.

Time Machine after reinstall and new user acct
3 TB eSATA drive used for months as TM back up. Drive had 300GB or so free space available after last B/U before having to format my boot drive.
Following reinstall of OS 10.9.2,I was not able to transfer user files using TM after several trials - it simply locked up with no error message. So, I skipped using B/U and created a new uswer account with same name as previous user account but with a new password. I then used the last B/U to manually restore user files and selected Apps.
In System Preferences/Time Machine, I selected the same 3 TB TM drive I had been using and left the excluded items unchanged. The B/U calcualted size was 2.72 TB, the same as before my set up with new user account. Prior to starting a new B'U I checked TM and found B/Us going back for quite a few weeks.
The next B/U for lack of space, with the mnessage that I only had 1.12 TB of space and the B/U needed 1.26 TB. I recalled that I had added some items to one of the included external drives prior to the restore and after the last B/U, so I excluded those new additions. The next B/U also failed and now the required space for the B/U was listed as greater than the first attempt. More disturbing, the ONY remaining B/U on the 3 TB drive now, after several mnore effrots to exclude as much as possible, is the last B/U I did before the format and restore process.
In Finder, the TM disk shows 1.12 TB free. It lists 2 B/Us - the last successful one and one fron this mornign listed as inprogress.
I changed my user account password to be the same as previously and logged out then bac in, then tried rebotting and after both times, the same failure occurred. I used Sstem OPreferences to unselct the 3 TB drive and select another one, then reselected the 3 TB again - still no joy.
It appears that TM is unable to add to the exsiting B/U and is trying to create a new one, or that it doesn't see existing files in the old B/U as the same as the new ones and is trying to create lots of duplicates.Hi VK

I have one i-mac happily backing up with Time Machine to an external hard drive.
I have just bought a second i-mac (stops the fighting!) and propose to use migration assistant to move my [admin] account from the old to the new i-mac leaving two other accounts on the old one. I see from your posts that it seems as if Time Machine will start a new back up series for the new i-mac's back ups. But what about the old i-mac? Will that continue to extend the existing Time Machine back up files, albeit without my transferred account and its files? If so, should I partition the external drive and start the new back ups from the new i-mac on this new partition. I'd like to end up with the old i-mac continuing to build its Time Machine back ups (less my account and its files) and have a new back up series from the new i-mac building to a separate partition on the external drive.
Does this make sense? I can't see an answer in the forum to what must be a reasonably common issue in this expandin mac world.

I've recently performed a clean install of my system and then recovered my documents etc by copying my backups to my hard drive from my Time Machine external drive. On this external drive are backups from before the clean install.
I want to use this disk as my backup disk again, but when I go to time machine it won't let me at the moment. Is it possible to get Time Machine to continue on the disk without having to clear it first? The messages says that my backup is too large for the hard disk, which I expect, but when I reach this point in a normal backup it offers to remove older backups. When it is a first run of the new system, it just says to change the preferences or ok.
Can I continue using this disk with the old backups on or will I have to delete the contents of the disk before being able to use it as my Time Machine backup disk again?

Everything you just loaded onto that disk is considered changed and Time Machine wants to back it all up again. For some reason, it doesn't always do that, but if it does, you cannot prevent it. Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
Most likely, TM has already deleted all but your last backup, but still doesn't have room for the new, full one. If your TM disk/partition isn't well over twice the size of what's on your internal HD, your best bet is to just erase it with Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) and let TM start afresh.
If it is considerably larger, then you might want to Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Those messages may show more explanation. Copy and post them here if you're still in doubt. -
I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite. Now have numerous problems. Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard? Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks? Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?
Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system. -

my back-up data is managed by Time Machine; the actual data is on a second internal Hard Drive with a capacity of 1TB - not partitioned. I am using Time Machine and have access to all data backed up since Mavericks Clean Install but not the data prior to this date.
When I open the 1TB drive in Finder I can see a folder "Backups.backupdb/Sigi's Mac Pro/ followed by many folders of backup dates going back to 2010-09-20-103441 and up to 2014-02-07-142414 all followed with folder Macintosh HD. February 7th 2014 was the date of the clean install.
These Backups are followed by backup date folder 2014-02-08-075554 with a subfolder of MacPro-320GB (this is the name I assigned to my Boot Drive during formatting; I suspect I should have assigned the same name as before ie. Macintosh HD) and 2014-02-11 with a subfolder Macintosh HD, these are the ones I get access to by way of Time Machine > Restore.
Weird thing is on Febr 11 when I relised my possible mistake and renamed the Bootdrive back to what it was initially ie. Macintosh HD despite this I have access to all backup data since the Clean Install in both folders MacPro-320GB as well as Macintosh HD but not to any data prior to the Clean Install.
Is there something that Time Machine knows and prevents access or is it simply a matter of renaming the subfolder 2014-02-08-07554/MacPro-320GB to ........./Macintosh HD?
I like to restore selectively and not everything - It was hard work reinstalling apps that were supposed to be the troublemakers (ref my discussion on Maverick problems) but I now need to get onto data specific to some of these apps as well as other data I may have missed. Long story? Yes and sorry.

What "new system" did you reinstall?
Are you upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard?
Or did you reinstall Leopard? If so, why and how (that may provide a clue)?
How is your Mac connected to the Time Capsule (use Ethernet for best results)?
You may need to repair the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. -
I have Photoshop Elements 10 on a new Mac, using Yosemite 10.1.1 - PE locks up every time I try to sign in. This software was restored to this computer from Time Machine after a theft of my old Mac. How can I fix this? It keeps telling me that there are missing files, too. If I upgrade to Elements 12 or beyond, will this fix the problem?
You can't sign in because there is nothing to sign in to. For PSE 10 the only sign in was to photoshop.com, which has been dead and gone for a year and half. Just skip the sign in. Reinstalling will not change this.

I have chosen to fil migrate from old ibook to new MacBook Pro using Time Machine after establishing admin account. I now have two admin. accounts and wish to delete the later one and transfer files manually. I am worried I will loose both accounts. ??
Use the Office for Mac and ignore using Parallels for that. If you have PC only apps you have to run that are MS Windows only then consider Parallels. Just transfer your main PC, using Migration Assistant. If you don't know how then simply read over Pondini's article called Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips and look for the section on migrating from a PC. Millions have done what you are about to, it's far from leading edge these days, if you go to an Apple Store to purchase they will offer this as a service, something you might be interested in.

Problems w/Time Machine after logic board replaced
Early January 2013 Apple replaced my logic board in my MacBook Pro. Just the other day I had a reason to go the first of February 2013 to find something in My Documents. There was NOTHING in Time Machine after January 3rd! When I got my computer back I noticed My Passport icon was yellow. Didn't know what that meant--but now I see probably something!
In trying to fix this problem I followed an Apple instruction which backed up SOMETHING ... but not in Time Machine because now there is nothing in it! The instruction was under the heading "Attempt to repair your Time Machine's backup - using an external hard drive to store backups."
I would very much appreciate some direction to try to fix this. THANK YOU!Hello again: Following the link above, I didn't see the examples that were shown so I put "Migration Assistant" in spotlight, it appeared and I followed what looked to be like what I should be doing . It took about a half hour. I really don't know what it was doing, other than Time Machine seems to be working again. But where are all the things it was transferring for a half hour? I am totally confused but just hope My Passport is still okay -- and that I don't really have to have anything from the past!

When restoring Time Machine after a failure, does it also restore the files to the same order, for example - within iPhoto I have pics/ videos in folders and sub folders organised as family/events etc - will it go back to this exact order after a restore?

Could not restore CS5 using Time Machine after changing to Mac OS8.3
Could not restore Photoshop CS5 using Time Machine after changing to Mac OS8.3 - the change was dictated by a power supply problem (now fixed) in my Macbook Pro - that has been fixed.
Restoring the Adobe application via Time machine is not a good practise and may cause other issues as well.
Please install the application properly rather restoring. -
Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?
Do you mean the external hard drive is not mounted on the iMac desktop?
Check if Disk Utility sees the drive. Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. If the external shows up in the left column, select it and click on Mount.
If it does show up this way, I recommend using DU to Repair Disk. -
My MacbookPro would not move past the Apple logo and spinning wheel for a number of hours. After trying the numerous suggestions to solve the issue I eventually opted to erase and reinstall feeling confident my Time Machine backups would come to the rescue. After a successful erase and reinstall I tried to restore all my data from my TIme Capsule using Command-R during start up and by using the Migration Assistant. Neither worked and I have received messages to the effect that the backup volumes on my Time Capsule cannot be access because I have entered a wrong password or because the backup volume is damaged.
When I open my Time Capsule in Finder and click on my sparsebundle I get an eror message saying that the disk image could not be opened and that the resource is temporarily unavailable.
Desperate for some help and comfort that many years of personal data have not been lost.

Restoring from Time Machine after complete reinstall
Hi!
I have some odd problems in my system. Can´t do capital K without using capslock, flickering images, mousepointer freezes when I connect an external drive etc. I have booted from another system which makes all the problems go away which leads me to think it is something wrong in my software. Same problems if I create a new account and I´ve tried an Archive/reinstall without any luck. So I thought I would try a complete Erase and reinstall. I have a Time Machine backup which I would use but my question is. Is it likely that a transfer from my Time Machine backup, after my erase and install, will contain the problems I am trying to get rid of? Any better suggestions to try instead?

If the problems are with software and not hardware that's quite possible. but what you describe is pretty strange. if the problems were with the system files an archive and install should have fixed them. if they are with some user preference files making a new account would have fixed them.
You can try doing an erase and install and check if the problems go away. if the do try using migration assistant to import your user settings and home directory ONLY from the TM backup. and if that doesn't work there is always an erase and install followed by manual migration from TM. that's VERY tedious but will give you the cleanest system.
