Time machine all recent backups missing after reboot

I accidentally deleted an important file on my mac, and when i opened time machine, i discovered that my it couldn't be found wirelessly. The green light was still on the front of the device but my mac couldn't locate it.
I'm not sure exactly how long it has been since timecapsule made a backup, but i have a clear memory of it working about 3 months ago.
I rebooted it and now its running, and has backed up.
My problem is when i go into the "star wars screen" to view past backups, the only backups are from today and then next most recent are from July 2012 when i first bought the time capsule, everything else in between has disappeared.  It definitely had 2013 backups.
Are the backups from 2013 still there and can't be seen, or have they been deleted permanently?

I presume then you upgraded to Mavericks?
It has a nasty habit of doing this.
If not on Mavericks please tell me what OS you are on.
Did you search by Finder.. after mounting the sparsebundle.. ie do not use Time Machine directly.
I know this is silly question .. but if you deleted the file is it in Trash??
If you deleted from Trash an immediate recovery is possible at times.. you will need to purchase a recovery software unless your are good with the CLI.

If it is deleted weeks ago then recovery is unlikely as the area of the drive will have been written over.

I restored my safari bookmark playlist from time machine. But it again missing after sometime.Again I restored the same thing happns again.plz help

Triple-click the text on the line below to the clipboard, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
    Quit Safari.
    Select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
A folder window should open with a file named "Bookmarks.plist" selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the folder open.
Relaunch Safari. It will open with the default set of bookmarks. Delete them all. Select
    File ▹ Import Bookmarks
from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Arrange the bookmark folders as you wish.
If Safari now performs normally, you can delete the old bookmarks file. Otherwise, quit Safari again and put back the file you moved, replacing the newer one with the same name. Close the Finder window and post again.

  • Time Machine deleting recent backups

I looked at Console today, just for something to do, and noticed entries for Time Machine deletions. My TM partition on an external has 459 of 750 GB still available, so I don’t know why TM is deleting anything at all. It’s leaving the earliest backup from recent days, deleting subsequent backups from those days, but leaving backups from 2009. According to Console, these deletions began Nov.12. I now have one backup per day back to Oct. 21, then one per week back to 2009, with an entire block between Apr. 2010 to Jan. 2011 gone. I have no idea what I may have done on Nov. 12 to cause this. I had updated to Mavericks the day after it was released, so I don’t think it’s a Mavericks problem. I’m not too concerned with what’s gone - my main reason for using TM is to backup hourly while working so I won’t loose more than an hour’s work (TM is still retaining all backups for today) - but I would prefer to have the most recent backups rather than ones from four years ago.

Bill, you might want to glean some insights into the nature of time machine from the last few pages of this recent thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23824079#23824079
For vital data you "dont dare lose" consider bare formatted HD for data archives,
Time machine is in premise and idealized as an entry-level or 'newbie' backup method, it has some flaws, and is best considered as a SYSTEM BACKUP  (OS files, settings, APPS and recent active data ON your computer)
Time machine is not best thought of as an important storage nexus for vital data, and in ANY regard, "2 copies of important data is 1, and one is none"
Consider a HD clone if you dont have much data, or importantly bare formatted HD(s) to store your important data.

  • Time Machine most recent backup never changes

Hi - new to the forums here.
I have been having issues for some time with my 13" MacBook Pro.  I'm still running Mavericks.  One of the things I am dealing with is that the date of my most recent backup has remained the same for several months now, even though I continue to back things up frequently.  The backups are in the folder, which is all that really matters, I suppose, but I've no idea why it's doing this.   I'd be grateful for any suggestions.  Thanks!

This simple procedure will clear your Time Machine settings, including exclusions. The backups won't be affected. If you have a long exclusion list that can't be recreated easily, you may prefer a more complicated procedure that preserves the exclusion list. In that case, ask for instructions. Otherwise, do as follows.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a file selected. Copy the file to the Desktop. Then move it (the original, not the copy) to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Restart the computer and recreate your settings in the Time Machine preference pane. It will show that you have no backups. Don't worry; your backups haven't been touched. Run a backup to test. The backup may take much longer than usual. If TM now performs as expected, delete the file you copied to the Desktop.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • I have installed itunes 10.7 several times.  All goes well.  After reboot, I go into itunes and check for updates and it says I need to download the update 10.7! (And so cant sync with my Iphone)

I have installed itunes 10.7 several times, all goes well. After reeboot, I go to check for updates and it still wants to update to version 10.7! I cant sync to my iphone4 because I get an error message saying I need version 10.6.3 or later. Help

Thank you for getting me started on the track by mentioning "Revo" Uninstaller.  The results of "Revo" spoke volumns on why a successful install of ITunes is so difficult to achieve.  It is the evil "BONJOUR".
I then tripped upon the following site by Apple and the detailed directions (I read, printed, re-read and followed the instructions.  It was intense) brought a successful ITunes, Quick Time and the lovely Bonjour home.  Thank you for the start JD42.

  • Time Machine slow to backup files after System Update to Mac OS X 10.7.3

I downloaded and successfully installed the latest update to Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3) a couple of days ago, and since then I have been having problems backing up my files using Time Machine.
My external hard drive is connected via USB, and I have tried replacing the cables but this has no effect. I have tried restarting the laptop several times, unplugging the hard drive and pretty much anything else I can think off, but it still takes a long time to back up.
For example, I left it running for half an hour - when I came back it had only backed up 1KB! It would usually have completed an entire backup in this time.
I have been patient and waited several hours and tried backing up several times.
Any suggestions would be greatly apprectiated.
    Thank you.

  • Why are all my backups missing after an iTunes update?

Hello. For reasons unbeknownst to me, my iPhone 4 locked up completely yesterday afternoon. It was lagging pretty hard, so I powered it off and on, or tried to, but it froze on the apple logo for approximately 25 minutes. I wasn't home, so I tried to do a hard reset and the phone eventually displayed a USB pointing at the iTunes logo. Uh oh. Once I arrived back home, iTunes told me the phone was in recovery mode and had to be factory restored. I wasn't happy about it, but I had just backed it up before the dilemma so I figured it wouldn't be a big deal. WRONG. iTunes required an update to version 11.1 in order to continue. Done. Then it told me that in order to restore my iPhone that I needed to upgrade it to iOS 7.0.2 Ok, I was on 6, but if you insist. The recovery was semi-successful-the phone is no longer a brick and is operating iOS 7, but it of course wiped out everything. The only thing to carry over was my apps. When I look in iTunes, the only backups it displays now are from last night, AFTER the recovery. When I look under  C:\Users\...\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup it displays one that was 30 minutes older, but still only from after the recovery. Losing all my music was bad enough, but I had various important memos stored on my phone, not to mention the complete loss of all my contacts, etc.
WHERE DID ALL MY PRIOR BACKUPS GO? How do I get this crucial data back on my phone? Please help!

  • Time Machine - all backups gone, backups fail

I've been backing up with time machine for 10 months via direct USB connection. I've recently been receiving a string of Time Machine error messages including "Error completing backup, an error occurred while creating backup folder" and "backup disk not available." When I clicked "enter time machine" all of my backups were GONE. Nothing there but "now".
I repaired disks, verified disks, unplugged and rebooted, all several times. After unmounting then repairing the external hard drive, TM was able to complete one backup but the problem came back within a day. All the old backups have disappeared completely.
    Ideas?

That sounds like a problem with your external HD. All those messages indicate a problem writing to it.
When you say you've verified and repaired disks, does that include both your internal HD and your TM drive? If not, do both just to be sure. Then, before attempting another backup, try the Browse option, per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). If your backups are there, and not corrupted, that should show them.
Also check all connections to the external. Use different ports, cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may make intermittent contact in another).
If the drive has it's own power supply, check those connections as well.
Restart your Mac, if you haven't during all this.
Check with the maker for firmware updates.
How old is the drive? Is it still covered by warranty?

Has Apple recently up-dated my OS (Lion) such that every time the screen saver starts it disables Time Machine.  I have to switch-off the computer and re-start in order to undertake  a back-up.  I have now switched of all screen savers.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

I am trying to confirm the time at which a particular backup occurred using an external hard drive that I have since misplaced. Although time machine lists the backup times for some backups, it does not list them for all, including the one in question. Can someone help?

Okay, I've sussed it.  I saw a link to another discussion that hadn't turned up in any of my searches before I posted the question above.
My Tosh HDD was formatted to FAT 32 and therefore would not be backed up by Time Machine.  I removed all data from it - nightmare as I hadn't enough space to put it on the macbook HDD, but, after trawling through numerous photos and deleting rubbish for hours, I finally made enough space and copied all data across.  Then, after clearing the data from the Tosh HDD, I used disk utilitity to reformat it to Mackintosh OS Extended.  Chose the option without kournalling because I'm not baking up onto this disk and so don't need it - according to some other discussions I found.
When it was done I check on time machine in system prefs and once I selected options, I was able to remove it from the excluded from backups list.  Hey presto.  Now I'm moving my photo library and my music library onto the Tosh HDD and my macbook should start to breath again.  Hurray.

  • Time machine will not backup after maverick

This is a major problem, not addressed in the installation instrucitons. The disk runs eternally "preparing backup", I mean all night.
This happened to two machines on entirely separate backup disks. And if we are sacraficing the old data in reformating the drive, I would like to know about that before choosing to upgrade.

    Update: Finally...
At least for the Promise Pegasus R4... but I noticed on other threads that WD drives are also acting up too so this might work with them too.
I turned off Time Machine, and deleted that pesky .plist file, again. I unplugged the R4, power and thunderbolt, then played whack the gopher with the drives swapping them around randomly.  I reintalled Mavericks from a fresh download, yet again, then set Time Machine to backup on a fast USB 3TB drive (which it did in 6 hours or so).  Then I turned off Time Machine, deleleted that .plist file again, rebooted the iMac, plugged in the R4, reformatted it again with Disk Utility, then hooked it to Time Machine, said a few slightly heretic prayers to whatever demons came with Maverick, and 2 minutes later Time Machine started to backup and report 1 hour to complete... the hour isn't up yet, but I'm crossing everything I have 2 of...
I've noticed a few other 'didn't copy over or mesh well' things with Maverick, but that's a different thread and 2 updates from now once we all suffer through this extended beta-test by Apple.
John Galt posted this on another thread... to find and delete that pesky .plist file:
or "error ... while creating the backup folder."
    and follow that to:

  • I'm running OS X 10.6.8-Why is Time Machine all of a sudden backing up 225GB of data after 2 years of perfect service? I have not added, deleted, or upgraded anything, Help!

I'm running OS X 10.6.8-Why is Time Machine all of a sudden backing up 250GB of data after 2 years of perfect service? I have not added, deleted, or upgraded anything.

USB 3.0 drives work on USB 2.0 but you do get 2.0 speed. They are cheaper because they are popular PC drives.  If you get a new computer you'll get the bump to 3.0 speed.
I like the Seagate USB 3.0 Backup plus drives. They come formatted for PC but easy to format in Disk Utility.  Seagate Backup Plus Right now the 1T is more than the 2 & 3T drives
This Western Digital drive has good reviews: WD My Book Hard Drive for Mac 2 TB $99.
Locally, Best Buy seems to have the best prices.
USB 3.0 is 10x faster than USB 2.0
Thunderbolt is 12 times faster than FireWire 800 and up to 20 times faster than USB 2.0.
Format new drives with Apple's Disk Utility rather than the software that come with the drive.
My plan was to rid a lot of the stuff I have on my computer (to a hard drive) anyhow once it had backed up.
I wound't necessarily backup those files to Time Machine. I would copy to the external drive then delete from computer. Only backup to Time Machine the data you would want to restore to your Mac if there was a problem. The backup will go much faster this way. Time Machine backup is slower than just copying data in my experience.
