Time machine allows only time capsule

I try to use a drive of another machine for backup. Time Machine has only one option, this is a time capsule. Since I don´t have it, I cannot backup my data. The option for Time Machine is being switched of everytime I try to select another drive.

Time Machine needs AFP file sharing, networked Mac running 10.5.6 or later and the Time Machine drive to be formatted with some flavor of Mac OS Extended with GUID partitioning.
Mac 101: Time Machine
Note: Every available disk that can be used to store backups is listed. If you’ve partitioned a disk, the available partitions are listed. Time Machine can’t back up to an external disk that's connected to an AirPort Extreme, or to an iPod, iDisk, or a disk formatted for Microsoft Windows (NTFS or FAT format).  If you select an NTFS or FAT-formatted disk, Time Machine prompts you to reformat the disk. Choose a different disk or reformat the disk in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. Because reformatting erases any files on the disk, only do this if you no longer need the files or if you have copies of them on a different disk.
If your backup disk is on a network, the network server must use Apple File Protocol (AFP) file sharing and both your computer and the networked backup disk should have Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later installed.
The most common format for a Time Machine backup disk is Mac OS Extended format, but Time Machine also supports Mac OS Extended (Case sensitive, Journaled) and XSan formats.
If the disk is partitioned using the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition type, some partitions may not be available for use with Time Machine. The GUID Partition Table (GPT) or Apple Partition Map (APM) partition types are recommended.

I use a DSL to connect to the internet. The modem is a Westell C90-810030-06. Two things happened in connection with the fail. I upgraded the firmware in both my Time Capsule (connected to the DSL) and the Airport Extreme (connected to my printer--used to extend the network). I also upgraded my Colof Nook to the Android Faux Tablet version. I can't imagine that that is creating some sort of mismatch.
I have now downgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule to 7.4.1 which is what I had before. Fortunately, I found the trick to downloading the older airport utility to find the older firmware. All the older versions disappeared from my computers.
I still have the same problem. Wifi works fine. If a second device connects to the wifi, then it works fine, but the first no longer has a connection.
And my Airport Extreme is not working at all. It cannot be seen by the computer. I tried resetting it. I'm going to connect it by ethernet and downgrade the firmware on it.
I appreciate any help. This is so frustrating.

  • How do I connect Airport Extreme and Time Capsule to my new iMac so that AE is used for network and TC only used for Time Machine backup?

I didn't realize that Time Capsule will only support the print function of a wireless multifunction printer.  So I want to use Extreme for my network to have full use of my printer and use TC as the Time machine backup only.  How to I make the connections?

Thanks for your response and this is getting complicated but I just purchased a new iMac as well as the Airport TC.  I've had the Airport Extreme for a year or so.  The Airport Extreme worked perfectly with my old iMac wirelessly and I had all functions of my printer with no problems.  I was expecting the same with the TC.  But the instruction that came with TC say to connect the printer to the TC via USB...which I did.  And the print function worked perfectly but nothing else.  In researching I discovered that when wired that way the TC only supports the print function...not scan or fax or anything else.  I tried going wireless since my AE worked perfectly via wireless but I got no printer functions at all that way.  But I'm wondering also if I tried that during a time I was having other issues...I had to delete and re-add my printer which solved some other problems.  I may try that again...and see if I can get all print functions with just the TC connected
As far as connecting both your AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule on your network, we're not clear on exactly how you want to do this.  Will the AirPort Extreme connect to your modem using an Ethernet cable and the Time Capsule connect to the AirPort Extreme using an Ethernet cable?.......or......do you want the Time Capsule to connect to the network using wireless?
Well... first of all I would like not to have to use the AE at all...I would prefer using just my TC for network, all print functions and Time Machine backup if that's possible. My printer will not accept Ethernet connections (Canon MX512).
After failing at getting this to work, I decided I would try to use my AE for net and print functions and just use my TC for Time Machine backup.  I tried several different connection configurations with no success until finally I connected cable modem to my AE via Ethernet and went wireless with the AE and printer. but connected the AE to the TC via Ethernet and amazingly everything worked like a charm (for a while) and I was patting myself on the back for being so smart.  But now I find that the connection only lasts for a short time.  If I leave it for a while the TC goes invisible...or at least I see a message saying the Ethernet is unplugged...but it is not... and I lose internet connection even though I have a green light on my AE. So now I'm at a loss. I don't know why I keep losing network signal and why my system thinks the Ethernet is unplugged.
So... after all this...I figured I wasn't so smart after all and I must have things wired incorrectly.
So... it sounds like you are saying I should go back and try again to get my new TC to work as I want it to via wireless instead of connecting via USB...is that correct?  Could you tell me exactly how I should wire my equipment from cable modem to AE and/or TC to achieve net capability, full functions of my printer and Time Machine backup...
    Thanks...

  • I just purchased Time Capsule today.  I ONLY want to use it as an external drive.  I do not need it for Time Machine. I can see the TC in my finder, but when I click on a file or video to drag and drop, I get message that TC can't be modified. Help please

I just purchased Time Capsule today.  I ONLY want to use it as an external drive.  I do not need it for Time Machine. I need to free up room on my computer. As of now, I can't even load updates. I can see the TC in my finder, but when I click on a file or video to drag and drop, I get message that TC can't be modified. Help please!

I agree with Kappy.. passing files and especially via wireless is slow as slow.
Just need to be sure your TC is the new AC model??
And the OS on the computer is Lion?
Have you completed the setup of the TC via the utility? You do still need to get internet via the TC so it has to be plugged into the main router..
Give us the full picture of the network.
Then we can help you get into it.. whether you should put your files on it is another question.

  • Time Capsule only allows one Macbook be on the internet at a time!

So far no one even at Apple Care has been able to solve this problem.
My wife and i have brand new Macbooks. Mine, the latest 2.4Ghz black model bought in the UK and her's the 2.1Ghz bought in the US.
We both used the Orange livebox as our wireless router and it worked seamlessly (albeit only when security was turned off) until i purchased a 1TB Time Capsule.
I managed to get the TC up as our wireless router with the Livebox as the modem, but, bizarrely, it will only allow ONE computer to be on the internet at a time - and giving preference to mine. Basically, the second i turn my airport on - she loses connection! It's like my computer ***** the internet away from hers.
If hers is the only computer on in the house then it works perfectly.
I have spent hours on the phone to Apple Care and changed a number of the settings within Airport Utility, but the longest we got both computer running on the internet together was for about 20 minutes when i switched to Radio Mode 802.11n only (5 Ghz). For a moment we thought the problem was solved until i put the phone down and low an behold, she lost her connection once more.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Don't know what an Orange livebox is, but I will treat it as a DSL modem and assume the ISP uses a DHCP server. Make sure you have connected the modem to the TC WAN port.
Open AirPort Utility, select the TC, click on Manual Setup, click on the Internet tab.
    - is 'Connect Using:' set to 'Ethernet' - set to this if not.
    - is 'Configure IPv4:' set to 'Using DHCP' - set to this if not.
    - is 'Ethernet WAN Port:' set to 'Automatic (Default)' - set to this if not.
    - is 'Connection Sharing:' set to 'Share a public IP address' - set to this if not (if set to Bridge Mode then only one computer will be able to use the internet).
Click 'Update and wait for TC to restart.
Check the network settings on the client computers. Go to System Preferences/Network/AirPort:
    - click on the 'Network Name:' roll-button, select 'Join Other Network...', enter 'Network Name and select the security type you are using, and finally, enter your Password and click 'Join'.
    If ISP uses DHCP:
    - click on 'Advanced', TCP/IP and confirm that 'Configure IPv4:' is set to 'Using DHCP', click 'OK'.
    - click the 'Apply' button and exit System Preferences.
May also be wise to Repair Permissions using Disk Utility and to reboot your network hardware:
    1. Turn power off to ISP modem and the TC, and shutdown computer - leave power off for 10 minutes.
    2. Turn on modem and wait for it to complete its test cycle. Then turn on the TC.
    3. Turn on computer and check your internet connection.

  • Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?  It used to work with old Airport Extreme with updates thru Snow Leopard but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA.

Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?  It used to work with old Airport Extreme network, run from a intel iMac with updates thru Mavericks but now seems to only allow WEP encryption instead of WPA and can't connect to Time Capsule.  Airport Extreme Base was controllable from either computer up through Snow Leopard (I didn't do any of the Lion upgrades).  Then when I upgraded to Mavericks I lost the ability to use Airport Utility with this hardware on the Sunflower but could still connect wirelessly to network without any problems.  But now with the Time Capsule upgrade the Sunflower is blocked from network by a dialogue that requests ony WEP password, not WPA pwd used by Time Capsule.  Neither can I use the old airport extreme base to extend the time capsule network since I can't input the correct password/encryption approach to join it.  Is there a work around?  Would a newer but old Airport Express be able to extend network to Sunflower?  Or maybe a third party wireless (such as Netgear, Dlink, etc) that has browser type control rather than special utility?
Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network.  Now on Time Capsule I don't see anything about this--so is it true now that the only access control is via WPA2 pwd now (which appears to be the encryption pwd and not the time capsule pwd)?

Is there a way to connect an old Sunflower iMac (OSX 10.4.11) to a new Time Capsule?
I can’t claim to completely grasp the issue(s) you’re describing, but the underlying problem is presumably your iMac’s obsolete AirPort card. Whatever the case, an obvious (if not particularly helpful) answer to your stated question would be to connect your iMac with an ethernet cable, using powerline adapters as an alternative if you don’t want to have wire running all over the place.
My still fully functional clamshell iBook, with an original AirPort card, connects wirelessly to my 4th Generation TC network by means of a cheap 802.11b/g/n USB Wi-Fi adapter. This might be an option for you too.
Another question--before I used MAC addresses to control who could access network.  Now on Time Capsule I don't see anything about this
When you edit your TC's settings the access controls appear under the Network tab, don't they?

At a guess you have cable internet connection.. please confirm exactly what you have.. two public IPs are allowed by some ISP.. once you use up the two IPs, there are no more..
Make sure the TC is in router mode. And to get it working you probably need to shut off the cable modem.. if it has battery backup remove the battery.. try 5min off .. if not long enough try 20min off. then overnight. The ISP equipment must reset to allow a new MAC address to capture the IP.
If you cannot work it out.. plug in the old router again.. and set the TC to bridge mode.. which I suspect it is in now.. and plug it into the main router.. it should work fine like that.

  • Does it create a problem if I only connect the backup external drive every few days for use with Time Machine?  Should I have purchased Time Capsule instead?

After a near miss with my 4-year old MacBook, I finally wised up and purchased a WD My Passport for Mac to back up my hard drive. I connected the Passport today and have performed the first full backup.  However, I do not wish to keep it permanently connected to the laptop.  Does this create a problem if I only connect the drive every few days?  Should I have purchased Time Capsule instead?

    Hello,
I don't think it'll cause a problem, but I'd disable/turn off Time Machine before disconnecting, then turn it back on after you connect it again.

  • Time Machine getting real-only error on 2TB Time Capsule --- Please Help

    Hi,
My MacPro is running 10.6.2. I bought a 2TB Time Capsule on August 1st, 2009. The TC has been running okay, but painfully slow. On Tuesday, Nov 24th, 2009, the Time Machine reported that the TC is read-only now. I've spent 5 days, including Thanksgiving Day, researching and trying to resolve this problem. To my surprise this problem goes back several years.
I have tried all the solutions without success. I cannot afford to lose the sparse bundle on TC --- it's 1.56TB in size.
My home/office LAN includes a Linksys BEFSR81 Router, 2TB Time Capsule, an iMac G5, and my MacPro. That's all there is. The router is connect to the Internet through a Comcast Cable.
The TC was configured using the Airport Utility. The password is set at the TC level. The password is also set "Guests" (something I found in my research). Wireless is turned off because I'm using an Ethernet LAN.
Now the following is very Strange!!!
    (1) Click on MacPro in the side bar. The Data disk is shown with a "lock" in the icon. It has only one permission: Everyone "No Access". I'm unable to change the permission.
    (2) Click on the boot drive and make invisible files visible. Expand Volumes. Get Indo on the Data "folder". The permissions are:
    everyone - read/write
    don (Me) - read/write
    admin - read/write
    everyone - read only
There are 2 "everyone" entries!!! I can't remove either of them. I wonder if the second "everyone" is the problem?
Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this read-only problem?
Is there a bug in the firmware? My TC version is 7.4.2.
    Please help!
    Thank you,
    Don Leckie

Disk Utility didn't report any errors. I checked the log too.
The disk "Data" in TimeCapsule can be opened using the Finder.
The sparsebundle for the MacPro can be opened and each backup folder is accessible and can be written to. But TimeMachine still says that the TimeCapsule is read-only.
The sparsebundle for the iMac G5 cannot be opened from the Finder. The error message is that I don't have sufficient privileges. Trying from both the MacPro and iMac G5. TimeMachine still says the TimeCapsule is read-only.
I tried using fsck_hfs to try fixing the permissions. But I got the message that the disk Data was not a character device; whatever that implies.
Tomorrow I'm putting a call into Apple Support.
    Thank you for your help!

You need to get rid of MacKeeper (Zeobit).  Do not use their uninstaller, follow the instructions here ...
    http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
When that is done there does not appear to be a lot wrong if you correct the red ink entries.
The 4Gb is sufficient for Yosemite though 6 or 8 Gb would be better.  You may find the download slow so be prepared.

  • Time Machine fail on only one of two Macs on the same Time Capsule

I have two computers connected to a Time Capsule, one Macbook (13'', 2.1 GHz) and one Macbook Pro (17'', 2.66 GHz).
For the past four days, the Time Machine has been failing on my Macbook, while the Macbook Pro works perfect. I get the following error message:
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
I can access Time Machine backups as recent as 7/30/2010.
Troubleshooting done (in order of trial):
    - Removed any files from Time Capsule other than backups (I previously stored music and movies that I never used there)
    - Restarted MacBook
    - Restarted Time Capsule
    - Used Disk Utility to Repair Disk - no errors found
    - Deleted com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
    Any suggestions?

Well, that's odd. It certainly looked like something was wrong with that system database.
Any suggestions? Can I erase only the failing backup from the TC?
You can open the disk image and delete the "in.Progress" file. That's a "last resort" sort of thing. Connect via Ethernet if at all possible. Double-click the sparse bundle to mount it, then double-click the disk image inside it. There you'll find a single Backups.backupdb folder, containing a single folder with the computer name. Inside that will be a folder for each backup, plus the "in.Progress" file (actually a "package.") That may take a while, and I'm not sure it will fix the problem. Then repair the sparse bundle, by dragging it into Disk Utility's sidebar, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Or, you can delete all that Mac's backups, but it will take a while and/or be rather tedious. See the last point and/or the blue box in #Q5 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
And again - thank you for being somewhat of a personal helpdesk!
You're entirely welcome -- that's what these forums are for!

  • Is it possible to browse a Snow Leopard back-up on a Time Capsule shared with a Lion backup using the Lion-only machine?

My 2006 Macbook died but was backed up to my Time Capusle. This machine was running the most uptodate version of Snow Leopard at the time.
I've read that I should be able to access this backup using a different Mac but I can't see it when I CTRL-click the Time Machine icon (in the dock), when using my Macbook running Lion 10.7.1.  It only shows me the current backup for this machine.
I know the old backup must be there somewhere as the Time Capsule is almost completely full (700 gb of the 1tb was dedicated to the old MA

If you control-click on the Time Machine icon and select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks" but don't see the other backups, try this: Look in the "sidebar" of a Finder window for your Time Capsule.  If you see it, select it, then look for the Time Capsule's disk (probably called "Data" if you didn't rename it).  Double-click that to mount it.  Now try again to control-click on the Time Machine Dock icon.

  • Time Machine restore only allows restore for previous 24 hours

I'm using Time Machine on a 500GB Time Capsule. My Mac is running 10.5.2. This morning I tried to restore a file from a backup several days ago. Although the correct date is listed in Time Machine, only the backups for the last 24 hours can be accessed from the Time Machine interface. The other dates are listed but are grayed out. If I access the backup volume from the Finder the backups are all there and I can restore my files.
    Any ideas?

Yes, but I didn't manually mount the disk image. It mounted (I think) when I first launched Time Machine.
That said, I just got home and launched the Time Machine interface again. This time it worked without a hitch.
I'll try and do some more experimenting if the problem occurs again.

  • Time capsule as hard drive, not only time machine

What do I need to change in the settings to be able to use the Time Capsule as a regular wireless external hard drive?
I find two options in the right column in finder, being the name I have given the time capsule, as well as the Time Machine. I can drag and drop files to the Timne Machine (but then only retrieve them by using the Time Machine). I can not, however, drag and drop files to the Time Capsule as such.
Reason I ask is that I also need to be able to get access to files via a PC. I can find the Time Capsule with my PC, but with only Time Machine files, it does not help much.
    Any input appreciated.
    C

I think you are simply not mounting the TC.
Ok in finder I can see my TC.
    Click on it..
The shared disk is shown.. but is not mounted.. double click the data share name (I called it something a bit different, TardisData) and wait for the disk to spin up and the share to mount.
Now you can create a new folder in the main share so you do not mess with TM sparsebundle and copy files to it.. but be warned .. you are going to have issues at some point using TM and data.. please read the warning Pondini has given.
