Time Machine and Disk Permissions + Compatibility with Snow Leopard

I have received warning from Disk Utility that I should repair permissions as several files show incorrect permissions and, more than that, my 750GB shows "769GB available".
My questions are:
1. If I use Command+R and rebuild the disk from a Time Machine backup, will permissions be reset or will the files just be copied as they are now?
2. Is there a way to verify the TM backups to check the files therein?
3. Suppose, just for the sake of an exercise, that I reload Snow Leopard; can I still use SL's Time Machine to read a Lion Time Machine backup?

Why are you repairing permissions? It's a waste of time unless you have a specific reason to do it, and the warnings don't mean anything.
To verify your Time Machine backup, proceed as below.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
sudo tmutil compare
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
The command will take at least a few minutes to run. Eventually some lines of output will appear below what you entered.
Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
Added:
Removed:
Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

Did Os Lion clear time machine archived disk images under OS Snow Leopard?

Just looked back on my time machine drive - and realised to my shock that there were no snapshots of my files prior to mid July 2011. I bought this 15in Mac Book Pro in April and have used the same back up drive throughout. I have 480GB of free capacity on the drive. The only thing that happened the week of the 'first' archived 'snapshot' is the upgrade to OS Lion...
Anyone else find this?

Changing the short name may have been the problem, but I would have thought Migration Assistant would have done it (messily - you'd have two accounts and loads of permissions to change).

Time Machine backup disk not mounting after Snow Leopard upgrade

i recently upgraded from latest version of Leopard to Snow Leopard via retail disk 10.6.3 & then updated combo 10.6.5. Now the TM backup disc will not mount.

Exactly what happens? Do you get a message? If so, what?
Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
If that doesn't help, the backups may be corrupted. Repair them, per #A5 in Troubleshooting.

I have a Seagate 3TB external hard drive and was using it with time machine on my old system with Snow Leopard and it was working smoothly. I have now upgraded to Mavericks and when I tried setting up time machine again, it did not work.

The OS does not detect the drive when I start the system, but Disk Utility shows the disk as an external drive. I seem to be going around in circles. Please take a look at the following screen grabs for the errors I am getting.

But When I verify The sub-partition in the Disk (disk4s2), it asks me to repair disk. When I try to repair disk, it gives me this error.

Time Machine does not provide archival storage.
If you delete a file from your disk it will eventually be deleted from your TM backup without any notice to you.
You need a second external disk to use for archival storage.
You also need a third disk for backups of the second disk.

Unable to unlock encrypted disk images created with Snow Leopard using Lion

Anyone else unable to unlock encrypted disk images created with Leopard and Snow Leopard with Lion? I know that they made changes with the release of FileVault 2 on Lion and Snow Leopard cannot use Lion encrypted disks but I thought it was backwards compatible where Lion should still be able to work with Snow Leopard created images (it was in the pre-release versions of Lion).
When attempting to mount an encrypted disk image created with Snow Leopard on Lion the normal password prompt appears but then just reappears every time the password is entered and does not unlock and mount the image. I'm positive the correct password is being entered and it works just fine when done on a machine running Snow Leopard.

Not in cases when the computer successfully boots to one OS but produces three beeps when an attempt is made to boot it to another. If it really was a RAM problem that serious, the computer wouldn't get as far as checking the OS version, and it has no problems booting Lion. In the event of a minor RAM problem, it wouldn't produce three beeps like that at all.

Time Machine And Repair Permissions Error

Hi.
I have a new Intel Mac running Leopard. "Set up Assistant" worked like a charm and brought over all my preferences, iTunes, iPhoto etc. with out a hitch. Verified permissions and the disk and came up clean.
I bought a USB LaCie 500GB external hard drive and connected it up with the idea that I would eventually use it for Time Machine.
First thing after connecting up the new hard drive, Time Machine came up and asked if I wanted it to use the new drive as a Time Machine drive and I clicked on "cancel." Thanks to all of you I knew enough to need to GUID partition and re-format the hard drive, from the FAT 32 that it came with to Mac OS Extended (journaled) that Time Machine needs. After completing this, again, the dialog box popped up about activating Time Machine and I cancelled it again.
I have not, yet, activated Time Machine. But running permission verify and repair yielded this error message both times: Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
This is the same message seen on so many other people's machines and posted here when they run into problems with Time Machine. If I don't resolve this error, will I, too, have problems running Time Machine?
This is so weird. The only thing I did between the clean permissions verification and the one with the error was connect the USB LaCie hard drive and partition and and re-format it. Time Machine has not yet been activated on this machine.
What does this SUID warning mean? Is this something I need to worry about? Should I wait to start using Time Machine?
Or... is this not a problem but there are other things I need to do to insure a good running of Time Machine?

The SUID is nothing to worry about.
It is documented from Apple stating this.
Everyone of us has that error.
It has not bothered Time Machine from doing its thing.

Time Machine and drive permissions question

I'm using Time Machine on a MacBook with two admin accounts (let's call them admin1 and admin2). admin2 is the account used daily. admin1 is the account used very infrequently.
Things were set up with admin1. I noticed today when I was logged in as admin2 that TimeMachine reported that the last backup was more than 2 week ago (when things were set up), and that the last backup failed because the user didn't have privileges.
I did a Get Info on the drive, and it seemed to confirm that (admin 1 had read/write privileges, but admin 2 had only read access).
To get around the problem I logged in as admin1 and turned Time Machine off. I then logged in admin 2 and selected the disk from there, and turned Time Machine on.
My question is - is this normal behavior? Or if there's something wrong, how to fix it?

It happens with TM. I am not sure of any convenient work-arounds. You can of course eject the drive and reattach it when you want to make a backup, but that's a bit inconvenient, IMO.
Is it possible to manually turn on and turn off Time Machine (and the external drive) so as to only do manual backups like I'm doing now? I don't really care about looking up a prior version of file that I've changed. I just want a reasonably current whole-disk backup.
Yes, TM has an on/off switch. Just turn it off until you want a backup. It will simply continue where it left off. It will not create a completely new backup.

Can time capsule be partitioned so as to back up osx with time machine and bootcamped windows drive with win 7 ulyimate

You cannot backup a Windows partition or system using Time Machine. Nor can you partition a TC as far as I know although Airport Utility may allow that now. See:

Of course you should carefully read the documentation that came with your TC to find out what options are available.

Time machine full after clean install of snow leopard

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard by doing a clean install. I just connected my external HD to backup Time Machine, and it's telling me the disk is full and there's not enough space to backup, even though it spent some time deleting files. I'm guessing that it's not deleting files from before I installed Snow Leopard? I'm not sure of the best way to manually clear the earlier backups. (in case it matters, my external HD is partitioned with Super Duper backups on one half, and TM on the other).
I tried looking at the TM troubleshooting tips, but wasn't sure of the best way to deal with this - rather safe than sorry!

The "proper way" is while in time machine, go to the specific backup you want to delete. Then click the gear shape or the settings on the menu bar. There is an option "delete backup".
When opening your time machine HD and open "Backups.backupdb" are there two machines appearing or just one? If there are two, go to the time machine icon in your doc and control click on the icon. Select the option "Browse Other Time Machine Disks" and select the older machine to access and/or delete backups.
I believe at times I've also just deleted the specific backups when accessing the time machine HD in the finder.

PSE compatability with Snow Leopard?

After using PSE v6.0 for years under Mac Leopard, I upgraded to Snow Leopard and it is no longer stable....crashes mostly when saving a file. I tried reinstalling PSE v6.0 but nothing changed. I've looked for upgrades to both Snow Leopard and PSE v6.0 but Snow Leopard's didn't improve anything and I can't find upgrade to PSE. I want to use my time machine backup to go back to Snow Leopard

I can't live without having my great old golf game (Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003) readily available, and playable, which I always had on my iMac with Snow Leopard. Since upgrading to Mavericks - and using Parallels with Mac OS X 10.6 Server - I am told there's a color/display problem (something about 16-bit color) and I can't get the game to play even though it's the same computer, only upgraded to Mavericks. Parallels says it's an Apple (Mac OS X Server 10.6) problem but from what I can see the server version of this OS is exactly the same as the non-server version - at least insofar as the display/color/graphics is concerned - and Parallels either doesn't want to help (with an appropriate graphics controller) or can't.... so I'm left with having to go back to Snow Leopard from Mavericks. What a huge disappointment! Can I use - and how do I do it - my Time Machine backup of my Snow Leopard OS, apps, documents, iTunes, etc. to wipe out Mavericks?

Yes, the machine came with Snow Leopard but not sure where the install disc(s) are. Perhaps they got lost in the shuffle as we moved a few months ago. I do have a Snow Leopard install disc - can I use that and if so, is there a different way to do the install than if I was using the original install discs that came with the computer? Maybe I will jsut have to try it and see what comes up....
But for the computer's inability to play the game, I would have stayed with Mavericks. Now I'm installing a trial version of VMware Fusion but probably the results will be the same as for Parallels. I'll report back in a few minutes!

Aha!
The proper way to "clean" a computer before selling it is to zero the hard drive. This will make all your data irretrievable.
Steps for zeroing the drive Disk Utility:
1. Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key until you see the spinning gear.
2. Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
3. Choose the entire disk (top icon).
4. Choose erase tab.
5. Click on Options
6. Choose "write zeros".
7. Erase
This will take a bit of time because the computer is physically writing zeros to each block.
You should then re-install the original OS from the system disks and deliver the Mac to the new owner with the system disks that shipped with it.
If you want it to boot as new at startup, do the installation of OS X and follow the onscreen prompts until it asks you to enter a username and password to create your first account. Quit the installer and shut down the system. The next time the system is powered on it will display the same welcome message and be ready to setup OS X.
Or you can delete the AppleSetupDone file.
rm -rf /var/db/.AppleSetupDone

Lacie burner compatibility with Snow Leopard

I have been corresponding with Lacie concerning the inability with Snow Leopard to use the Lightscribe software anymore. I was able to burn labels before Snow Leopard. Their reply is below and I don't have a clue what they're talking about. I hope someone in this forum can enlighten me.

You need to update the silicon image mother board of the Mac to the latest version so the LaCie drive can be operated under Snow Leopard.
How to do that is actually out of our support field, you will need to contact Mac tech support and they should provide more information on the issue.

I've never used Lightscribe (my dvd drive is pre-Lightscribe); but I just checked their downloads pages and I saw
Lightscribe labeler 1.2.2 which "fixes issues with 10.6"
Have you tried that? I've scoured their support pages and the only reference to a possible problem with 10.6 has to do with a setup assistant for an external hard drive (if you use a setup assistant).
Their email support could be better (I'm being polite); I have a problem with their statement:
+"so the LaCie drive can be operated under Snow Leopard."+
If they are referring to any DVD drive, it is bunk - mine is old and works just fine with 10.6.3 (I just tried it). As for the "silicon image mother board", unfortunately, I don't have a clue - I'd inquire if they're sure they are referring to a Mac rather than a Windows machine because we call it logic board.
