Time Machine and file sharing with XP on a Time Capsule

Am I right in thinking that I can't use a Time Capsule to support Time Machine on OS-X and to support sharing files between OS-X and XP at the same time given Time Machine will not run on FAT32 and I can't partition Time Capsule hard drives without taking them to bits, partitioning and re-assembling?

Hi Jonathan and welcome to Discussions,
Drive Genius http://www.prosofteng.com/products/drive_genius.php and iPartition http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iPartition.php claim to be able to repartition without erasing.
Time Machine indeed works only on Mac OS Extended partitions.

  • Time Machine AND File Sharing: Partitioning possible?

    Hi everyone,
I'm thinking about a TC setup where 2 Macs would connect to it and do regular backups using Time Machine. At the same time I'd like to use TC's hard drive for file sharing purposes. I believe that this is possible. What I don't know is:
Is it possible to partition the drive in order to set a limit to what space is available to Time Machine? If not, is there another way (ratio setting) to limit this?
    Thanks
    Björn

From what I've seen, the answer is no. (1) you'd have to be able to access the disk in such a manner as to partition. it does not show up in Disk Utility. Perhaps Terminal might have options. (2) As far as I've seen, there is no ratio setting. TC just backs up all Macs on the network using Leopard that have Time Machine backups set to the TC.
You can actually do what you want without changing anything. The TC HDD shows up as a network drive. Time Machine backs up until full. Files on the drive would take up space. So, until it's full, you can put shareable files on it. once it's full, you have delete backups or make space through some other method.

  • Time Machine needs file sharing mode

I have a Time Capsule (1rst Gen 2008, 500 Go) 56GB left, connected through Ethernet.
I just rebuilt the index but i still find odd it needs 4 mn to backup 10MB every hour
    I have strange errors
mds[78]: ERROR: _MDSChannelInitForAFP: AFPSendSpotLightRPC failed -1
    and
mds[78]: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume
    also,
    1) i need to enable file-sharing (with airport utiliy), or Time Machine won't start
    2) the name of the disk is incorrectly spelled in Time Machine preferences (with a "-1" at the end, as if there were two disks with the same name. There are not)
    3) Time Machine seems to be using afp for the backup
com.apple.backupd[3242]: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://MyDisk
i wonder if there is a problem in the way Time Machine is configured
    Any ideas ?

  • I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time  Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on  what other external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and  how to configure that disk

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

  • Using external HDD for Time Machine and files in one single partition ?

    Hello everybody.
I've been searching for some time now and have encountered some contradictory answers, so I turn to you.
I would like to know if it's possible (one) and safe (two) to use a single partition for both Time Machine and file storage. I've read that this should be ok, since TM is actually only a single folder, which means the rest can easily be used as a standard Finder drive. Some people say however that this is not good to do so, because TM will run out of space quicker. But if the -let's say- 30Gb used for files where used by TM after a month, that would be the same, wouldn't it ? It would simply erase older backups. But is it safe to do so ? Will Time Machine not makes errors when accessing files or doing an entire system backup ? I don't won't to make a new partition really, that's why I'm asking you here, to let me know some arguments about it.
Thank you very much for your answers.

Yet, overlooking that, you say "safe: mostly", why is that ? where's the "danger" or, what where you thinking when you said that ? Aren't these simple folder's ? Do you mean that, because during a full backup, these "stranger" files could be a problem ? It would be great if that was clarified, since I've found no indication about it elsewhere, has anyone tryed it ?
Oh, yes folks have tried it. That's why I (and many others) recommended against it.
Here's a similar thread from just the other day: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1926893 Note the responses from the top 2 "gurus" on this forum.
I probably should have asked you what you mean by "safe." If you mean, will TM delete other files on it's partition, no, it won't. If you mean, can there be problems, then yes, there can be conflicts and difficulties, as mentioned.
As to whether TM backups are simple folders, no, they aren't. They look like normal files and folders, but they actually contain what are variously called "hard links," "multi-links," and (my own personal favorite term) "ghost clones." Think of them as very fancy aliases. So they're not to be fooled with directly, by us mere mortals.
If you want more on this: http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2007/10/mac-os-x-10-5.ars/14
    and/or: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/10/12/roadto_mac_os_x_leopard_timemachine.html
and, if you haven't seen it yet: http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#tutorial=leopardtimemachine
You should also know that, for some reason, TM stores it's backups differently when it does them wirelessly. In that case, they're in a "SparseBundle," very different from the structure used for directly-attached backups.
All the more reason to put each Mac's backups in a separate partition, and if you want to store other data there also, a 3rd partition for that.
I've been using Mac since many years now, but I have no idea about backups, so excuse me if the statements appear a little childish.
Nope. Even those of us who are "older than dirt" and have used many flavors and varieties of backup systems for decades are in a whole new world with Time Machine.
And most of the folks on this forum who found themselves in deep trouble got there because they assumed things or didn't ask.

System files are hidden by default in Finder now, search for what you want then click the little + button on the top right of the bar that appears when you do a search. A new bar comes up and click the first box (that says "Kind"), change it to "System Files". Then change the box that says "aren't included" to "are included" and your file should show up.

  • I want to use iChat video and file sharing with Windows users

Nowadays, iChat is compatible with AOL/AIM, Google Talk, Jabber, Mac.com and MobileMe instant messaging services. I know that Yahoo Messenger support will be available soon in Mac OS X Lion.
I tried using AOL/AIM and Google Talk natively in iChat in order to talk with Windows users which were using Google Talk application or web chatting (Me from: Google Talk - My friends from:  Google Talk, and Me from: AOL/AIM - My friends from:  Google Talk), but videoconference and file sharing were not available.
I also tried Windows Live Messenger in iChat via Jabber intermediate, but it is not efficient and doesn't work for videoconference and file sharing.
So, which IM service combination I should use to chat with Windows users in order to be able to use videoconference and file sharing using such a great app like iChat?
    Thanks you.

    Hi,
A lapsed Trial or lapsed Paid for MobileMe account will not work in any fashion, as a Screen Name in iChat/AIM apps or as a Email.  (Of course it is no longer an Valid Apple ID either).
Given that Google is a Jabber server iChat will Video (or Audio Only) Chat Jabber to Jabber.
With a Valid AIM name (AIM, MobileMe or @mac.com) then it is supposed to work to AIM on a PC
This tends to vary from person to person as to success.
From AIM version 6.5 AIM introduced a Send as Typing feature called "Real Time"
It does not work to iChat and in fact also has to be turned Off in the Buddy List at the AIM end for Video or Audio chats to work.
The AIM app also has to be allowed through the Windows Firewall as an Exception, preferably with UPnP enabled as well and UPnP enabled in their Router.
Trillian is a paid for App for PCs that provide an alternative.
Recently theri site offered 3 windows versions
The Pro version of verion 3.2 (known to work), a version 4 and a version 5 in beta.  The version 3.2 used to have a free Text chat version and only the Pro version was needed to Video.
Until the site was reorganised the 3.2 version was "On Sale" at a reduced price.
It seems version 5 is now out of beta
They are still separating out a Pro version.
    It is a multi-service client
There is also a Mac version although I have not tried it.
I am not sure what you mean by "Manage" your MSN Contacts.
How about using a MobileMe expired account screen name for using iChat with Windows-Google Talk users? Should I expect the same incompatibilities?
I have already addressed part of this. The fact the name will not work full stop.
However one way of reading this is that you are thing of linking AIM and Jabber (Google) Buddies in one Buddy List
Directly in iChat this cannot be done - unless you are the one with the Jabber Account and an AIM Transport set up.
You would be subject to the same Text Chat only restrictions.
It is a bit like the fact your phone line can be used for Fax, Telephone and DSL broadband. (in fact mine does TV as well)
You granny would not be able to talk to your Fax machine if that happened to answer the call.
Her Fax machine might be able to communicate with your computer if you had an active Fax app on there, and a dail-up modem active to answer.

  • Time Capsule both: Time machine and file server

    Hi!
We have 3 macs that has access to a Time Capsule we use just as a file server.
Now, I'll like to do backups of all the data, and I was thinking about using Time Machine in all the computers to backup in Time Capsule.
My question is, can I use Time Capsule as both? With Time Machine and also as a file server?
    Thanks,
    Júlia

Time Machine can be used to backup your Macs to the Time Capsule. You set this up on each Mac by opening System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock and then opening Time Machine to select the Time Capsule as the destination for backups.
Time Machine will keep separate files for each Mac on the Time Capsule and your regular files on the TC will be left alone. Ideally, Time Machine needs about twice as much space for each Mac to allow for a good history of future backups.
Backup each Mac one at a time since the first backup will copy everything from the Mac over.
Things will go 3-5 times faster if you connect the Mac to the Time Capsule using an Ethernet cable for this procedure.
Once the "master" backup is completed for each, you can switch back to wireless to backup incremental changes since these will only take a few minutes on average.
As you know, Time Machine cannot be used to backup the regular files that you already have on the Time Capsule disk. If you need to backup these files, post back for a few suggestions on applications that can handle this task.

  • Time Machine and File Vault problems

    Hi,
Since I converted to Mac more than a year ago, I turned my file vault on (although I learned in the meantime that it is not actually necessary....)
I now recently bought the time Capsule and found out that the Time Machine doesn't go well with the File Vault turned on. It does back up the home folder only when logged out and I don't get the hourly backups for single files either.
I then tried to turn File Vault off, but get the error message that I haven't got enough space on my hard disk (which I have). This message led me to this article here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1974
I am really not an expert and not too confident to play around with accounts, backups and so on, so I really don't want to go down the described route.
For me, it looks like a bug in OS X, I should be able to turn File Vault off with the click of a button. Also, why is the File Vault / Time Machine conflict nowhere mentioned ? I was playing round with TM to recover a single file, but this wasn't possible, that's why I went to explore the issue further...
I now just want to turn off File Vault and finally want to use my TC normally.
    Who can help ?
    Message was edited by: Mike201071

....so, it seems to work now.
I did eventually go through the routine of backing up my home folder manually on the TC, then I created a new account, copied everything back, deleted the old account, and so on, as described in the link above.
I did not turn on the File Vault, activated TM and backed the whole lot up via Ethernet, switched back to wireless and TM seems to do the trick now.
I have now access to single folders and files when I go back in time in TM, instead of the whole backup only.
This seems to be the only way TM & TC are working properly, why is this conflict between File Vault and TM nowhere mentioned ?

  • Macs and file sharing with Panasonic Lumix TS5

I'm trying to set up this camera to send my photos wirelessly to my IMAC but have hit a brick wall.  The instructions with the camera state wifi sharing is supported with OS X 10.4 to 10.8, and I am running 10.75.  The instructions are simple: find the file and enable sharing.  I've completed all the steps, and my camera finds my Imac fine, but then cannot find the shared folder.
I researched this and found that for a different Panasonic camera, despite what panasonic says, file sharing did not work for mac only environments. (http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3360154). I have contacted panasonic, and am beginning to believe the this is true for my camera as well.  I explained my problem and she first recommended to sign up for a lumix account.  Then it went from here:
Kerry-Ann W.: In the setup it states where a lumix club account is required to send images to lumix club cloud
Dave: Ok, do I understand correctly that I needed a lumix club account to transfer images wirelessly to my IMAC?
Kerry-Ann W.: No I am not saying that. There is some sharing settings that needs to be set on your computer. We recommend that you contact apple so they can assist you in adjusting those settings.
Dave: Ok, I've signed up for a lumix club account. Will that help me transfer my images to the mac?
Kerry-Ann W.: We recommend that you contact apple so they can assist you in adjusting the sharing settings on your IMAC.
Dave: Kerry-Ann, please help me. I've done exactly what the Lumix manual tells me to do with my mac and it's not working. You are supposed to help when the manual doesn't suffice. Isn't there any tips you can give me to try and make this work?
Kerry-Ann W.: That is correct and based on checks done if it is not seeing your folders that means there needs to be some settings done on your computer for it to see the folders and if that is not done then you will not be able to see the folders.
Dave: Ok, so will you help me get those settings done on my computer?
Kerry-Ann W.: We recommend that you contact apple so they can assist you in adjusting those settings.
I have no idea what settings she is referring to, and she offered no guidance at all.  Has anyone had any success file sharing with panasonic cameras?  Or has anyone else concluded this is hopeless?
    Thank you,
    Dave

I have run through 2 of these cameras (1st one died-Epic Panasonic Fail) and I'm stoked I found the easy fix. No thanks to PaniCsonic.
Connect your camera via USB to your MacBook. Don't worry that it won't show.
Go to System Preferences under the 'Apple' icon (top left corner for any newbies)
Select the 'Sharing' tab/folder (should be yellow diamond with a person walking to YOUR left direction)
    Select 'Internet Sharing'
A sub menu 'To computers using' will open up to the right with 3 boxes/options:
    1) Firewire
    2) Ethernet
    3) Bluetooth PAN
Select Bluetooth PAN box so it check marks as selected.
    Click the 'Internet Sharing' box.
Select 'Start' when the prompt asks if you are sure you want to turn on Internet sharing.
The 'Internet Sharing' box will then select.
Your camera will then prompt you to select a USB mode. Select 'PC'.
Wait through the access mode and VOILA, your photos will be uploaded straight to iPhoto as they should do in the first place.
I like the camera for it's simplistic functionality. I had a slick Olympus underwater that had the same features, but was more time in navigating through them all. I don't like PaniCsonic for their poor foresight in making this camera an austosetup feature for Mac users. My iPhone didn't like it much either.
Nonethless, there's the fix. For/from me.

  • What to do if you simultaneously run Time Machine and File Vault

Never do what is mentioned in the subject line; even if you decrypt your drive, it does not spread to Time Machine, and so if you ever need to do a system restore, File Vault will forget your password and lock you out of your own system.
Thankfully, I ended up having recourse. The solution is to log in as root and create a disk image from the last Time Machine backup, "latest," and then duplicate that disk image. Having done that, paste the files into the user folder of your choice, recreating the account you have lost.

Realistically, your only option is to upgrade to an Intel-based Mac.
There is no way to use iCloud on a Mac running anything lower than OS X 10.7.2 - not even Snow Leopard.
You can access iCloud.com through a web browser on your current computer, but you'd need a Mac running 10.7.2 to move to iCloud and it wouldn't sync anyway...

  • Sleep interferes with Time Machine and file writes to FW800 drives

I have leopard installed now on 5 systems. If a system goes to sleep while i am either copying files to an external firewire 800 drive or using time machine for its initial backup to the firewire 800 drive the file copy/write will get hung up and not resume when coming out of sleep. I have also had a problem where the screen gets crazed and locks up while writing to external drives and the sleep state.
I have gone in and selected never as the sleep frequency and this has all stopped.
I did not have this problem writing to the same Firewire 800 drives with TIGER.
    Anyone else seeing this problem?

I am having a very similar problem. Time Machine starts up fine (albeit a little slow). It starts backing up files. I have the machine set to not go to sleep and I have the option to put drives to sleep turned off. I do have the screen saver kick in after 30 mins, though. As soon as that happens, the backup process seems to halt.
FWIW, I am backing up to an external FW800 drive. I have a FW400 enclosure I can try. I'll give that a whirl later tonight.
This is very annoying. Very un-Apple.

  • Time machine on NAS - shared with 2 Macs and some PC's

I just got a new MacBook Pro and have an iMac. I'm running time machine successfully on a USB drive hooked to my MacBook. I want to buy a big 1-2TB NAS drive, hook it to my network, and use time machine with both Macs as well as use the storage for 2 PC's on my network.
    a) is this feasible?
    b) If not, is it feasible with just the Mac's and no pc's?
    c) is any particular brand of NAS most compatible with Time Machine

TM will only back up to drives that are formatted Mac OS X Extended, Journaled. NAS devices do not use OS X so TM will not work with them. TM will not backup Windows drives. Most USB based NAS devices may provide a pass-through USB port to which you could connect a separate USB drive exclusively for TM, but I cannot assure you that will work.
I assume you do know the difference between a USB external drive system and a NAS device? They are not the same things. Most NAS devices use Ethernet - preferably Gigabit because anything slower is really unsuitable for network backup (as are USB drives.)

  • Networking and File Sharing with XP PC's

I bought a MacBook pro 2.2 ghz last week and have an issue when it wakes from sleep mode. I have a Linksys wrt54g wireless router connected to my home XP machine and the notebook connects to the router fine for internet and for sharing files with the XP machine(noted as MSHOME under network locations on the mac).
Sometimes when the notebook wakes from sleep it fails to detect MSHOME under Network, and will only show SERVERS and LIBRARY yet, the PC can still see and access files on the Notebook at certain times when this happens. Internet access from the router is never affected.
I also tested this with an ethernet cable last night and the same thing occurred. At first I thought it was the airport, but now I am not sure.
Bye the way, also add one Kernel panic to the mix after having it for two days, but haven't had one since.
I have read that the sleep mode has some strange reactions with these systems. I think it's now noted as an enhanced sleep mode.
I am scheduled to see a Genius (yeah, right!)at a local store on Saturday and wondering what kind of run around I will get.
Anyone have any ideas why this is hapening or how I can correct it?
Santa Rosa MacBook Pro 2.2 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)
MacBook Pro 2.2 ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Your problem is not one requiring a Genius but more a user knowledge issue (hey everyone has to start somewhere!! : ) ). Remote Desktop is not a solution for what you want to achieve. The variables you mention are not problem points if you understand networking and hence the reasons why you are having issues.
For starters, don't rely on network browsing to find resources on a network; least of all from a Mac! Network browsing works much better under Windows (sorry Apple, but it just does).
Secondly, realise that if you change passwords, it will effect what you can access (for obvious reasons). If typing a username and password is acceptable for you then this is a moot point. If you don't want to type passwords, then make sure you use accounts with matched username/passwords.
In Finder, select the Go menu, then Connect to Server... This is the sure fire way to ensure you get the drive mapped properly. Type in:
    smb://computername/sharename
where computername is the netbios name of your Windows PC, and sharename is the folder share name. Create an alias of it somewhere so you don't need to do it again! Don't use an IP address, as if the address changes your alias will fail - use the name and as long as you don't change the PC name you'll be fine.
Post back here if you're still having issues or something isn't clear and we can throw in some more pointers.
