Time Machine and .Mac/IMAP Mail

I decided to try out Entourage 2008 yesterday, which very quickly turned out to be more trouble than what it was worth. It did seem at least to be very good at importing/transferring my mail, including my .Mac account and my IMAP account.
To cut a long story short, said mail disappeared from my .Mac inbox AND my IMAP inbox. Probably a user error on that point.
No problem I thought this morning, and brought up Time Machine to recover my .Mac Email Inbox and my IMAP email inbox.
However, for both accounts, while Time Machine would seem to recover the data, it would not provide it back into Mail. I realise that these are IMAP accounts, but I'd expect in these circumstances Time Machine would recover + push the inbox contents back across to the IMAP servers (or more specifically, trigger Mail.)
Instead, nothing.
I was able to recover my IMAP server Inbox thanks to NetWorker, but my .Mac mail inbox is lost as far as Mail is concerned. I can recover the files for the Mac-account folder under ~/Library/Mail, but .Mac doesn't see them. I try to do an import from the Time Machine backup region, Mail doesn't accept they're suitable files. In the end, the only option I had was to manually pull out from ~/Library/Mail/Mac-account the attachments and messages as plain text files for the INBOX. So no effective data loss, just a pain.
Does anyone else have any experience on getting Time Machine to properly restore .Mac (and/or IMAP) messages that have been deleted on the .Mac/IMAP server?

One last question - when i import my mail from Outlook Express into Mail, it puts the import into a section of Mail (if you look at the left hand side) titled "ON MY MAC". Are these emails subject to recovery as well?
Yes. Unless, you have excluded something in the TM Prefs Exclusion List, virtually everything on your Mac will be backed up to the TM backup disk.
At one point, or another, ALL of us were 'new to Macs'. So don't be sorry for asking questions, that is how ALL of us here learned as well.
Cheers!

    Hi All:
I was wondering if it is possible to restore a single email if I'm using Time Capsule/Time Machine? I would be using Mac Mail for my app. Thanks in advance.

  • How do I set up my Time Machine and Mac Mini with Lion Server so i have one wifi loop in the house?

    HELP!
So I have had a Time Machine wifi loop at the house for approx. 6 years. I run two Macbooks, 2 iPhones, 2 iTouch and a Samsung Smart Blueray on the loop.
I just bought a Mac Mini with Lion Server. When setting it up I'm not sure what or how I managed to do, but I now have 2 wifi loops, one doesn't lock and niether will support the Samsung BlueRay. Also, each time I want to go online with one of the other Mac devices i have to relog into the wifi loop.
Can someone please walk me through the fix. The mac Mini is plugged straight into the Time Machine to recevie its internet connection.
    Thanks!

You often see this limit of 10 clients in wireless hotspots but I have yet to see it in an adsl modem.. most strange way to pay for a service that is really irrelevant how many clients you use.
Have a go .. I recently setup a TC to help a guy run his Roku.. and this setup worked well.. I have no idea if it can work in your case.
Lets say the IP you get is 192.168.2.1-10 .. doesn't matter what it really is. And the adsl modem is 192.168.2.254
(Assuming they are private addresses.. if they are public IP you can just use the DHCP and NAT. )
But go to the airport utility.. I think you need to run v5 at least to change DNS.. but you can do the same thing in v6 using static but no dns changes.
Now you set the IP of the TC manually.. This address might need to be in the dhcp range of the modem to work. You can set the DNS to same IP as the router address.. ie home address of the modem. Or you can use another DNS.. whatever you like.
Then set DHCP for clients that will join.. this can then expand the scope of addresses..
It worked without a NAT error.. although I am not sure exactly how.. on paper it should not be able to work but did.. have a go.. otherwise there is perhaps another way.. but it is complicated.
Give us an example from a computer plugged into the modem of what IP .. subnet mask .. Gateway and DNS you get. Then I can fine tune the values for it.

  • New user needs help with time machine and mac server.

I am a new mac user and got a new mac mini running server.  I have time machine enabled on the server and a back up folder created.  My macbook will not see the server when trying to set up time machine from the macbook.  What am I missing?  Thanks.

Unfortunately even though Apple had touted the AEBS USB2 HD use with TimeMachine (TM) they pulled it from the Leopard TM feature list about 1 week before releasing Leopard GNBuild 9A581.
At this time Apple does not support use of the AEBS USB HD for use TM.
I strongly suspect we will see this feature return in one of the next two updates Apple releases for Leopard.
In the meantime be patient and I don't recommend you use a hack to circumvent the current TM limitation.

  • Time Machine and Mac Pro with 4 Drives

I am hoping there is a way to fix this. I have a Mac Pro with all four internal HD bays filled. One is, naturally my boot drive, one drive is a brand new drive I've designated for Time Machine, one other is a 500 GB drive nearly filled to capacity with my music and movies, and the four drive is the backup drive for said music and movies. Time Machine will allow me to eliminate any external drives I've got (and there are 6 of them), but not any of the internal drives.
Any one else have this problem?

So you want to specify that you only back up one of the internal drives or something?
I don't have any problems doing that... I have 4 internal drives, and I back up exactly one of them (that has my home folder) using Time Machine to an external drive.

  • Time Machine and .Mac/IDisk

Anyway to use Time Machine to back up Idisk/.mac? I used to use Bouceback but deleted it thinking Time Machine would handle that for me.

Using the Dot Mac Backup does not work for what I'm trying to do/how I feel time machine should be able to work.
I keep ALL of my documents on iDisk since I routinely access them from two different macs and a PC (not all on the same network). The automatic sync of iDisk is perfect for this, ensuring that I always have the most up to date copy accessible. For this reason, the files are stored on the iDisk, not on any of the local computers (except for by way of the local sync of the iDisk).
While I understand that iDisk files are essentially backed up by being on the network drive and a local sync... to me the value of Time Machine over a typical backup software is the ability to
    1) see files as they existed at a particular time in the past (revision history)
    2) retrieve files which have been deleted by the user
    3) enable this via an easy to use graphical view of folders at a specific time
Time Machine will not enable me to do these things for my iDisk files. Furthermore, the suggestion to use the Backup 3.1.2 application will not solve this problem, since I don't want to backup local files to my iDisk, rather I want to back up my iDisk to my local media. I cannot seem to find a way in Backup to specify my iDisk as a backup item (although allowing this would enable users to keep a backup copy of their iDisk on their local hard drive, allowing time machine to work and enable a true visual file history).
It is not an option to store these files locally and then use backup to update the iDisk since, as I mentioned, the value of the iDisk for me is that I access and update files on the iDisk from multiple computers.
I am disappointed that two Apple developed applications integrated into the operating system (iDisk and Time Machine) will not work together. Surely I am not the only one who uses iDisk as a network storage solution rather than a backup storage solution. There should be a way for Time Machine to work with network storage (iDisk or otherwise)... or at least by enabling graphical file history browsing of the local sync of iDisk.

  • Time machine and mac pro

I've got the 640gb disk and plans to add a 1tb. But what I've understood from time machine use, I can't have more than one disk as target. How do I solve that, or should I look into other methods?

Ok, basically, you're saying you want to use TM to back up the data on both the 640 + 1TB drives... Yes, it will do that. You just tell TM "this is the drive I want to hold the backups". It will then go through all your other drive (unless you put them in the exclude list) and back them up to that designated drive.
The key is that you need to have a 3rd drive that is big enough to hold as much data as the other 2. Set that bigger drive up as the TM backup drive. Time machine will then merrily back up your 640+1TB drives to the 3rd drive (you said maybe a FW 800 one? ). Once it does the full backup, it'll then only do incrementals, storing only the changes since the last one...
If you're thinking that you'd have the 640 back up to the 1TB, and the 1 TB back up to the 640, then no, TM doesn't do that.... It's 1 way only (AFAIK).
While some people have had issues with TM, I haven't... YMMV. If nothing else, it's better than nothing (which is what most people have!)
There are some other options if you're concerned about TM though...

  • Time machine and Mac hang before finishing backup

Reaches to about 16GB and then although it says its still working and has more to backup its not and the Mac stop working as well requiring hard reset.
I have removed all files from timemachine just in case it had reached its limit and was not removing old backups (even though I had this checked) but this made no difference.

Have tried every option now. Have been able to back up onto a USB drive with no problems. Tried fully cleaning and resetting the timemachine back to factory settings but still it stops at around 10gb and the Mac then hangs and needs a reboot manually.
Called help desk only to be told my timemachnie went out of warranty 20 days ago - should have called them when I first had the problem and they would have replaced it - now I have to chance my arm with an in-store rep. Have an appointment on sunday - lets see how I get on.
Not happy that something that costs so much only lasts for just under one year.

  • Using Time Capsule and Mac Mini to replace a PC.

I have 4 macs of various vintage in the house and 1 PC. I use the rather robust PC as the server for my itunes library. I'm fully uploaded to iCloud. I'd like to replace this final PC with a Mac Mini but none have a harddrive large enough to accomodate my iTunes library. (about 785G of music and video) Can I use a Time Machine as the storage device for my iTunes library? Can I connect the Time Machine and Mac Mini via Thunderbolt for fast data access? Also, if I can use the Time Machine for storage of the iTunes library, should I consider the iCloud to be my "Back Up" or should I get an additional Time Machine for back up? Also, I use and AirPort Extreme as my wireless router with 2 AirPort Expresses to expand my wifi network. Can I simply add Time Machine to my existing network or will I need to replace the AirPort Extreme with the Time Capsule?

Don't use Time Capsule for media storage.. it is not suitable and although pressed into service it is a pain. (Time Machine is software backup on the computer and is completely unrelated to the TC).
The problem with using Time Capsule to Time Capsule, is simple.. it doesn't have any software to do it.. The TC is a backup device.. not a NAS. Do not try and use it as a NAS.
You can add a TC to the network without doing much.. just bridge the TC and it will work fine plugged into the AEBS.. but again it is expensive waste. You are buying a router with enclosed hard disk drive and turning off the router.. so all you have is a hard disk which is networked.
If you get a mini use firewire external drive.. you can get 2 or 3 TB fairly cheaply and plug it in. Then back up to a TC if you really want, but any NAS with Time Machine extensions will do the job. Or a hard drive in another Mac made available to the network.

  • When using Time Machine in Mac Mail, everything works fine but restored files do not appear in MM - On My Mac, and I cannot find them anywhere.  Thanks

Time Machine Problem: Mac Mail.  Cannot Find Restored Files in Mac Sidebar where they are supposed to go.
I am using Mountain Lion on my MacBook.  I have successfully used Time Machine in the past, but I have incurred the following problem that I am requesting help on.
I am attempting to recover Sent  and Inbox Mac Mail sent.  I go through all the steps properly and locating what I want to recover, and after hitting Restore everything seems to be working and I get a message "Restoring 207 files".  The guides say that then I am supposed to find the files in Mac Mail sidebar under   ON MY MAC.  But they are not there nor anywhere else I have looked.  In other words, everything appears to be working fine except I cannot find the restored files.
    Thank you for you help.
    Jerry

Although you can restore messages from a Time Machine snapshot within the Mail application, it generally won't work with messages that were saved by an older version of Mail. In that case, you have to use an alternative method.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Inside that folder are subfolders representing your Mail accounts. The names refer to the email addresses you use. Decide which ones you want to restore messages from.
Enter Time Machine and scroll back to the snapshot you want. Select the account folders you want and then selectRestore ... to... from the action menu (gear icon) in the toolbar of the snapshot window. Restore the folders to the Desktop, not to their original location.
From the Mail menu bar, select
    File ▹ Import Mailboxes...
Import from the mailboxes in the folders you restored to the Desktop. The imported messages will appear in a new mailbox. Move the ones you want to keep wherever you like and delete the rest. Then delete the folders on the Desktop.

  • What am I doing wrong in Time Machine and Mail?

    Hello,
I've been trying to switch my Mail from POP to IMAP. I've almost got it finished, but I lost a few messages in my inbox when I deleted them from the server (thought they would stay in Mail, guess I need to get used to IMAP). I went to Time Machine, found the messages from a few hours before, highlighted them, and clicked the Restore button. Time Machine scrolls back to the latest window, then Time Machine closes and I'm returned to Mail, no mailbox selected. When I check the Inbox, the restored messages aren't there. I check the Recovered Messages mailbox in On My Mac, I even check the Deleted Messages box On My Mac. I can't find the restored messages anywhere. I can't seem to figure it out, I must not be thinking clearly, and I need someone's help to point me in the right direction. The messages are safely in Time Machine, and I can't get them to come back.
Thanks for helping me out with this,
    Jess

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
              Envelope Index
              ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Time Machine and Mail problems not fixed in 10.10.1

Time Machine and Mail seem completely broken in Yosemite. If anything it got worse in 10.10.1.
    1. If you see inboxes at all they are empty.
    2. Even if you don't press any buttons, Time Machine changes your account descriptions, order of accounts and in one case even disabled an account!
So after entering Time Machine from Mail, even you don't do anything, you have redo a bunch of settings afterwards.
Anybody know a solution for this?
I've tried talking to AppleCare about this (for a month now) but they never get back to me.
    doug

What do you see when you enter Time Machine from within mail?
Also, do you happen to have an external display? I have one and I think that causes extra issues.
Do you see a stack of past inboxes, and for each inboxes do you actually see emails listed?
How many email accounts do you have? And what type are they - Gmail, etc.?
It may be a corruption issue on my individual installation. Or it may be that we have different numbers and types of accounts. So it would be useful to compare.
I have 4 Gmail accounts, 2 "ordinary cPanel" IMAP accounts and 1 iCloud account. So 7 in all.
    Thanks,
    doug
