Time Machine and MS Office Home Student

I attached a new hard drive to my MacBook Pro and launched TM and let it do a full back up. Upon completion I could no longer access my MS Office Home & Student version - I got a message that MS was already in use(meaning that the license was in use on another computer). I had to erase the back up, de-install MS, re-install MS and apply three layers of upgrades - and then MS worked. I also excluded applications and system stuff from TS. No bootable HD here.
The MS license allows for three installs, each with its own product id.
I have MS office on my Imac and it has a TS back up as well.
Is this problem because MS considers a TS full back up a machine and count it against the license (My IMAC, its TS drive, the TS drive on the MacBookPro?
And advice?

No, MS does not consider a backup a use of the license. You can use a license as often as you want on the same computer. The three serial numbers simply allow you to install Office on three different machines.

No. iCloud has nothing to do with Time Machine on your computer, and as long as your computer has synched all desired content and settings to iCloud, not only does the modem not need to be switched on, your computer doesn't need to be on either.

  • Time Machine and Microsoft Office

Earlier I posted a question in 'incremental' backups and my 5.6 gig hourly backup problem. It was suggested that this was caused by the Parallels virtual drive and certainly, when I dropped it from the backup and did an immediate backup this seemed to do the trick. Unfortunately a couple of backups later it was back to 5.6gig! There may well be a problem backing up a virtual drive at folder level and this I am sure will cause a problem but the fact is I didn't use Parallels so there was no change. The problem was actually the single file Entourage database (though why it is this large is beyond me). As soon as it is changed by just one email Time Capsule backs up the lot! Leave this out of your backup and all is fine. Which leaves MS Office users with a problem because their emails will not be backed up.
I have by the way, tried to switch back to mail to circumvent the problem, but Mail it seems, cannot import from Office 2008 only 2004.
As far as I can see there are three ways round this. Either one can backup this file separately on .mac, do a weekly backup with the entourage database included (which takes away the 'set up and forget' element) or go to this site
    http://computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName =hardware&articleId=9069678&taxonomyId=12&intsrc=kc_feat
where the more digitally adroit can set up an applescript workaround for this problem. I am afraid I was too much of a coward for this and have settled on doing a backup of this file on a weekly basis.
The Microsoft Entourage database is in Documents/Office 2008 Identities/Main Identity/Database
If you have other identities in use the save problem will be even worse of course. I suspect the problem also happens with Office 2004 as well because this too had a huge database.
    Hope this helps someone.

    Hi,
I have found that even though I do not exclude anything from Time Machine, I lost 1 month of emails in Entourage after a 10 second power failure. The screen appeared as it did on May 30, 2008. I called Apple and Microsoft. I was told that the large database in the main entity is now excluded from regular backups. The last "date modified" is not changed when new emails are added. When I looked at my backups of this database on time capsule, there were only three for the two month period. So even if I was willing to use 1GB of space for the backup, it never occurs, except for some infrequent unknown reason. So I lost about 300 emails from my inbox, folders, everywhere. Nothing could be recovered from June. And the last modified date on the database in the main identity if May 30th, even after I have sent and received many emails yesterday and today. Time Machine is not backing it back and I did nothing to stop it. Apple admitted that this is the case. I have never lost this much data and it has caused me tremendous work to complete newsletters, etc. I am switching to Apple Mail - I can't take this silly loss of data. One lightning bolt, the lights blink, and the computer shutsdown. I force a restart and June is gone!!! Oddly, this did not happen on my old IMAC G5 with Office 2004, just on the new IMAC with Office 2008. But I will admit the Entourage 2008 was open and the computer was in sleep mode. Office 2004 was closed. Very frustrating.

  • Backing up two Macs to a mirrored NAS using Time Machine, and then on to the cloud

I'm going to be moving home in the next few months, and I want to use this as an opportunity to get my home technology rig set up properly. I wrote a blog post about this at
    http://state68.com/content/moving-edinburgh-sorting-out-technology-rig
A few friends of mine have read this over, and the weak link in the chain seems to be my backup strategy. As per
    http://state68.com/content/moving-edinburgh-sorting-out-technology-rig
What I'd now like to do is to backup both Macs (a Mac mini that stays on my desk at home and a MacBook Air that travels everywhere with me, in case you haven't read the links above) to a mirrored NAS via Time Machine, and then have the mirrored NAS backup to the cloud. I'm aware of the potential compatability problems between Time Machine and certain NAS drives, but as for the rest, well:
Has anyone got this to work? Is there a specific cloud service that you could recommend? And what do the Time Machine files actually look like: would I be screwed if my office caught fire while the NAS was in the middle of sending data to the cloud?

Thanks, Linc. Is that a marketing decision by Apple (possibly to push sales of Time Capsule) or is there another reason why Apple doesn't support third-party NAS solutions?
All that being said, I'm happy for the fallout from a NAS meltdown to hit the vendor so I'm happy to continue this line of enquiry with regards to putting together a backup strategy. I'm also open to completely different backup strategies that will work for my scenario, if people would like to share these.

  • HDD for Time Machine and other stuff

Just a very short question.. Can I use my external harddrive for Time Machine and for example putting files on it to take it to my friend, or the otherway around, put files on it and take it back home?
The reason I ask this is that I hooked up a USB HDD and it said I needed to clear all the data on the disk first before using Time Machine.

As you probably already figured out.. I don't know anything about External HDDs. That's why I want you to ask which of those LaCies you would suggest for TM with 40GB of used data and it needs to be fast:

  • How to store photo's on external drive and still use Time Machine and secondary back up plan

So, My Macbook Pro is now going on 4 years old and I've accumulated around 15,000 photos in iPhoto now.  I would like to move everything (or at least everything older than 12 months) onto a portable external drive, but i'm not sure the best way to do this and still keep a good back up plan.  My current process is the following -- I have external HD same size as my current internal drive on the MBP, which is formatted that i use Time Machine.  I also have a paid subscription to Crash Plan online cloud back up that is connected to my laptop drive (CrashPlan is constant and easy, so I just USB plug in MBP to EHD a few times a month and that's it).  If I were to move most of my picture/video's/important docs to an external drive, how would I back that up with Time Machine, and if I did, how would I back up my laptop drive with Time Machine also, and what drive would I assign my Crash Plan online account too?  Cant seem to wrap my brain around the easiest and best method.  (In short, I want most pics/video's stored off the laptop so that my HD is not consumed; but still easy to access if needed, and easy to back up)  Also driving this need for a solution is the fact i would like my next lap top to be an Macbook Air, which I know I can't keep my current set up would not work.  Any thoughts are appreciated.

if your internal drive has 250 GB and the external drive with the iPhoto library as well, your TimeMachine should have at least 1 TB.
I have read over some of CrashPlans support docs and it sounds like it will be able to back up and restore the iPhoto library, and as long as you restore the entire library and not single photos, it will save and restore all metadata as well.
I studied their documents to.  They are saying they can backup any filetype. And they are saying the iPhoto libraries or Aperture libraries will be backed up automatically, when they are in in the Pictures folder, because the Home folder will be backed up.
On their screenshot you can see, that the libraries are backed up as a nested set of folders, and not as a package. That let's me doubt that the dependencies within the package will be treated correctly. To restore from the backup they recommend to restore the set of nested folders.  What I could not find anywhere in the documentation is any information on the filesystem they are storing the backup on. If it is not Apple's MacOS Extended (Journaled, not case sensitive) the restored library may be corrupted, because the internal links in the databases may not work. Try to find out something about the filesystem on the backup servers, before you entrust your iPhoto library to that servers.

  • Time Machine and File Vault - How does it REALLY work?

    Good afternoon,
I ran some tests and I can't figure out exactly how Time Machine behaves with Filevault.. here's what I did:
I ran a backup manually. It backed up about 265megabytes. This was right after iTunes downloaded an update for my iPhone. This is weird, because that is stored in Library/iTunes/iPhone Software updates, which is in my FileVault user data.
I ran a second backup right after. It backed up 726Kb. Sounds like not much has changed.
Then, I copied a folder (mp3 album) from my NAS to a folder called Time Machine Test in my home folder.. 91megabytes of files.
I started a backup. Sure enough, it backed up about 91megabytes.
After the backup completed, I mounted the Sparsebundle file, and my files were there. I could copy them back properly.
Can someone explain to me exactly what TM can backup while logged in, and what gets backed up only when I log off?
It seems to me like actual files are being backed up, while the complete encrypted sparsebundle is backed up at logoff only. But if that's the case, why isn't there an option to restore individual files other than by mountaing the TM volume manually?
    Thanks

infrid wrote: We shouldn't accept this as a price we pay for using other operating system features. Gepeto is quite right : it's unnacceptable, and Apple should sort it out.
Hmm. I guess it depends on whether you want your Time Machine backups to be encrypted or not.
If you use a whole disk encryption solution like PGP, Time Machine works fine when logged-in but all your data is backed-up as though encryption were not present, because one you have booted, the encryption is invisible to applications including Time Machine.
If you enable FileVault, and remove your Home Directory from the exclusions, TM will back up the files in the same way when you're logged in but they will be unencrypted on the backup drive.
With FileVault enabled and Home Directory excluded, it is not the FILES that are being backed up, but the encrypted VOLUME which is essentially one big file containing all the individual files in your Home Directory. It's similar to a TrueCrypt encrypted volume in this sense. It needs to be backed up unmounted which is why it only happens when you log off.
The only thing Apple could do would be to create an encrypted volume for the TM backup and synchronize that with your FileVault volume. Not quote the same thing as Time Machine though.

  • Can i uninstall iPhoto 9.4 and reinstall iphoto 9.3 from time machine and will my photos still be there?

can i uninstall iPhoto 9.4 and reinstall iphoto 9.3 from time machine and will my photos still be there?
    Janet

Did you try to repair your library after the update to 9.4?  Here's what you can try:  make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If the above does'nt work and you want to go back to iPhoto 9.3 read this tutorial from  iPhoto Library Manager's website:  Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto

  • What am I doing wrong in Time Machine and Mail?

    Hello,
I've been trying to switch my Mail from POP to IMAP. I've almost got it finished, but I lost a few messages in my inbox when I deleted them from the server (thought they would stay in Mail, guess I need to get used to IMAP). I went to Time Machine, found the messages from a few hours before, highlighted them, and clicked the Restore button. Time Machine scrolls back to the latest window, then Time Machine closes and I'm returned to Mail, no mailbox selected. When I check the Inbox, the restored messages aren't there. I check the Recovered Messages mailbox in On My Mac, I even check the Deleted Messages box On My Mac. I can't find the restored messages anywhere. I can't seem to figure it out, I must not be thinking clearly, and I need someone's help to point me in the right direction. The messages are safely in Time Machine, and I can't get them to come back.
Thanks for helping me out with this,
    Jess

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
              Envelope Index
              ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Time Machine does not backup home folder

I upgraded to Lion recently and time machine was working properly, my hard disk failed and apple replaced it, but put in a HD with 10.6.8 on it.  I then restored from time capsule (1 TB- first gen) and eventually it worked and everything seemed to be working.  However it also changed the name of my home folder (reversing the name) and now my home folder is not backed up on to time capsule, local snapshots include it but not on the tc.  I have reset (using pondini guide) the preferences and also eventually deleted the previous time machine and completely set up a new one but still no luck.  Can anyone help as i am uncomfortable without a backup of my home folder.  Nothing is encrypted and file vault turned off.  Please help.

    No one with a clue?

  • Time Machine and equivalent of System Restore?

For years Microsoft have had (and needed) a feature called "System Restore" which lets you uninstall operating system updates that may have caused problems.
I had hoped that Time Machine would also provide this capability since uninstalling Apple updates is not really possible. I cannot see any obvious way of doing this. For example, based on the fact that to undelete an email you have to have Mail at the foreground before activating Time Machine I thought it might be logical that if Time Machine can uninstall Apple Updates you would need to first have the Software Update preference pane open. This does not work.
Has anyone else found a way to do this?
While the rest of Time Machine (for undeleting files etc.) is wonderful, a way of rolling back Apple updates (or anyones updates) would be very helpful as well.

    AxL wrote:
Yes but +"any changes to any file on the system (mail, photos, documents, etc) would be lost"+ only temporarily.
They are all still on the TM backup, and you can restore them using the TM interface, and there's even an option to recreate a folder that doesn't exist anymore
(better say "that was not yet existing"...)
in the same location or in any other chosen location.
    No data loss.
I have since my original post found that booting from the Leopard DVD and selecting restore from Time Machine lets you browse backups to restore from, and that it lists the version of Mac OS X for each. This would make it easy to select 10.5 if hypothetically reverting from 10.5.1 but it also suggests that hypothetically reverting from QuickTime 7.3 would be much harder since all you would have to go on would be a date/time. For this maybe the log in Software Update would be helpful.
Your answer (thanks for it) however does resolve the worry I had about such a restore also reverting user data. Now that you have pointed it out one can of course then do a second restore when back up and running just of the user data.
I would have to say though that this is not an elegant user friendly solution to this particular issue and thus not up to the standards one expects from Apple. Imagine if you are doing this on a machine with multiple user accounts (not unlikely for a home machine). You could also theoretically encounter a situation where you do an Apple update, create a new user, create data, need to remove the Apple update, have to restore the entire machine via Time Machine, and thus lose the user account, and therefore not be able to login to restore the user data. Potentially even if you recreate the user account, it may not have the same exact UID or UIDnumber and thus make restored data inaccessible (users are forgetful and you do not have control over the UIDnumber used).
I still think a more friendly approach would be for the Software Update preference machine to be "Time Machined" like Apple Mail and iPhoto have been so that if you are in Software Update and activate Time Machine it will let you just revert an update without affecting user data.

  • Can't download the Office Home & Student 2013

I just purchased the download for Office Home & Student 2013 and I tried to download it and it told me that it couldn't find the "setwaitabletimerex" in the kernel32.dll.  I have Window Vista.  I really need to get this fixed as
soon as possible.  Please email me back with the fix.

If you have already purchased office 2013, Consider upgrading your operating system to windows 7 or 8.. That will cost you less than repurchasing office..
Or for vista you can install office 2010..

  • Time Machine and FileVault: Change after last Software Update?

    Hallo there,
A lot of people seem to switch to Leopard because of Time Machine, but according to the reports, the user experience has got nothing to do with reliability. So let me describe what is going on here concerning Time Machine.
I am using the German Version of Moc OS X Leopard with all recent software updates installed. I will try my best to translate the messages in the user interface. As mentioned above, I work in a user account that is encrypted wih FileVault. For Time Machine I have a 320 GB USB Harddrive from Lacie. Since I am having a MacBookPro, the USB-drive gets connected when I am at home, which means 2 or 3 times a week.
With the first verion of Leopard, everything seemed to work like described: I had to log out of my account and Time Machine would start to write an encrypted sparsebundle to the USB-harddrive. Now, a few updaes later, the situation appears as follows:
1.) When I log out of my account, there is no message that Time Machine backs up my home directory; neither can I notice any activity from the USB drive.
2.) When I open the Time Machine configuration in System Preferences, it tells me in the line with the "Next Backup", that it will start, when "Mac is connected"; but even if the backup drive is connected, nothing seems to happen.
3.) When I click on the padlock in the bottom left corner of the preferenes panel of Time Machine, the padlock will have opened by itself the next time I log in to my account.
4.) When I open the backup drive in the Finder now, I can no longer find the encrypted sparsebundle; instead there is a new folder next to the "Macintosh HD" folder, that holds all the contents of my home directory unencrypted... but: its content is out of date!
If anyone here has an idea what all this means and if there is an option to get an automated backup that really works, I would be glad.
    Thank you.

I can't comment on the history before 10.5.3, but FileVault and TimeMachine are working ok for me with 10.5.3. Not ideally, because TimeMachine backs up only after a log out, and because you can't use the snazzy galaxy interface to restore individual files. However, the problems here have been exaggerated in the blogs. It is easy (and even good practice) to get in the habit of logging out at the end of the day (or even more frequently, as at lunch). TimeMachine will then have a nice series of stored snapshots. Restoration of individual files, rather than the entire volume, requires--gasp--a bit of "manual" activity rather than "galaxy" activity. One opens TimeMachine, figures out what time slice is appropriate, and proceeds by double-clicking to get to the saved volume for that time slice. Then one double-clicks to mount it, entering the password. Then one goes into the mounted disk, finds the file or folder that had accidentally been deleted or corrupted, drags it to the desktop, and then drags it to wherever it should be. Not exactly a big deal. Compared to the non FileVaulted situation, it's clunky, but still very nice in comparison with most backups and infinitely better than depending on occasional backups.

  • Installing Office Home & Student 2013

    Hi,
I recently purchased Office Home & Student 2013, but every time I try installing it give an error message that MS Windows applications are not supported on OS 7. What must I do?
    Thanks

    Well, two possibilities:
You are indeed attempting to install that app suite on an iOS 7 device (which would would be an iPad, iPhone, or iPad). I have no idea how you are attemtping this, but no it will not run on such a device. You will need to find the equivalent apps on the app store.
You are actually try to install on your MBP running OS X (not the same thing), but it is the Windows version, in which case the same is true. You need to purchase the version of MS Office for Mac OS X. http://www.microsoft.com/mac
