Time Machine and Permissions Problem?

I recently bought another iBook as I ran my old one into the ground. Using Migration Assistant I had Time Machine restore my old files. The back up was on an external MyBook drive. All went well until I tried to drag-and-drop files to the external drive. The computer gave me the message that the drive could not be modified. It then gave me the option to authenticate which I did and then the files were written. This happens every time. Will anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks
o

Niel
This solved most of my problems. One lingering is the constant refusal of Stuffit to expand items on to the external drive, saying it's write-protected. I have saved to the drive from Safari and Speed Download so I know that isn't true. Only when I used Stuffit does this happen. This didn't occur on my old Mac; only when I used the Migration Assistant combined with Time Machine. I'm going to delete Stuffit's .plist and see if this helps.

  • Time Machine and Mail problems not fixed in 10.10.1

Time Machine and Mail seem completely broken in Yosemite. If anything it got worse in 10.10.1.
    1. If you see inboxes at all they are empty.
    2. Even if you don't press any buttons, Time Machine changes your account descriptions, order of accounts and in one case even disabled an account!
So after entering Time Machine from Mail, even you don't do anything, you have redo a bunch of settings afterwards.
Anybody know a solution for this?
I've tried talking to AppleCare about this (for a month now) but they never get back to me.

What do you see when you enter Time Machine from within mail?
Also, do you happen to have an external display? I have one and I think that causes extra issues.
Do you see a stack of past inboxes, and for each inboxes do you actually see emails listed?
How many email accounts do you have? And what type are they - Gmail, etc.?
It may be a corruption issue on my individual installation. Or it may be that we have different numbers and types of accounts. So it would be useful to compare.
I have 4 Gmail accounts, 2 "ordinary cPanel" IMAP accounts and 1 iCloud account. So 7 in all.
    Thanks,

  • Time Machine and MacFamilyTree problem

I deleted an item in my MacFamilyTree and when I restore an old update of it to get the info, the restored version includes the latest modified info.
Why can I not get the old version without the new modification?

    Hope this works.
This is April 17, 2011 yet when I opened Time Machine and restored it said it was April 17, 2013
This is what the top of the file shows when I open it
When TM window is open I can't access any other files or windows.

  • Time Machine Disk Permissions Problem

I had a malware infection which resulted in hundreds of "users" sharing my iMac. I immediately changed my password just in case.   I could not get rid of the issue so I decided to restore my hard drive from a Time Machine backup disk.  Now when I try to use the Time Machine it indicates that I don't have the proper permissions to access the disk.  I have tried to repair the disk with Disk Utility but it doesn't find any problems with permissions.
I have tried to change the permission settings using the "Get Info" but it indicates that all read/write permissions are "custom".  I try to change them but nothing is accepted.  So, I can't access my old Time Machine backups at all.
I don't know how to resolve this problem.  Any ideas?

Update - The backup to the new Time Machine - that I named 'Time Machine 2' - share was around 91GB worked fine.
Some additional info was that when I was having problems with Time Machine backup my macbook was connected to the network over a Toshiba Dynadock U3.0 docking station that periodically freezes. I've stopped using it and connect wirelessly until I can afford a more expensive solution like getting a Thunderbolt display to use for 'docking'.

  • Time Machine and Permissions

    Aloha everyone,
I've read through a lot of the post here and I have not found anything that seems to solve my problem.
I have been trying to restore a couple of directories from my Time Machine backup and I get a message telling me 'The operation can not be completed because you don't have permission to access 'BASEBALL' & 'SplashID', (each one is separate, but I wanted to provide both sub-directories). One of these is a directory I store video in and the other is an application.
    Directory is /USER ID/DOCUMENTS/xxxxx
What I have done since I got this message the first time:
    * Made sure I had permission per Mac OS. I am Admin on my system.
    * Made sure Admin had Read / Write to these files as well as myself
    * Confirmed permissions to each level sub-directory under both directories
    on my system
    * Confirmed sub-directories under Time Machine had same permissions
    * Tried restoring Time Machine to each sub-directory
    * Renamed sub-directory so a new one would be created when doing restore -
still got error message noted above. Although it did create the sub-dir,
    but did not restore data.
    * Tried restoring directories to Desktop, still get same permissions message
    * Deleted other directories at the same level and restored from Time Machine
    without any drama
Anyone have any ideas on how to get this to restore?

Hi - Try reapplying permissions on the files in the Time Machine volume. Give read/write to "everyone."
Next, reapply permissions and ownership via the terminal. Replace username below with your short name.
sudo chown -R username (press spacebar, drop folder into Terminal window, press enter)
sudo chmod -R -N (press spacebar, drop folder into Terminal window, press enter)
sudo chmod -R u+rwX (press spacebar, drop folder into Terminal window, press enter)

  • Time Machine and Permissions- URGENT

I have been getting really frustrated with Time Machine. It's a good concept but needs some work.
I do have a semi-urgent matter though. I have been using time machine since leopard came out and it seemed to be working okay. HOWEVER, when I tried to access some files on the external drive that are not at all related to a time machine backup Mac OS X gave me the whole "you are not authorized to open this. Your permissions are all wrong, etc."
I have checked all the usual suspects. Made sure the ignore permission box was checked. I tried changed the permissions to other users but any time I made a change and closed the get info window everything was reverted back to the original settings from Time Machine (or what ever made the original change).
I really need these documents, so I turned on root and tried changing or accessing the permissions that way. No such luck. Same thing: it reverts back to previous versions when I close the window.
Any one have ideas? I have spent about 2 hours trying different things. Maybe there is something that I am not thinking about - -
    ~Thanks

bump... i found still need help with the permissions. (the documents are not quite a urgent at this point)

  • Recurring Time Machine and Spotlight problems

When I first installed Yosemite, the first TM backup hung on “Preparing backup”. I rebooted, and the hourly backups worked for a few hours, and then a backup again hung on “Preparing backup”. Likewise, Spotlight worked for a while and then hung. I re-indexed the hard drive and rebooted. Spotlight worked for a while and then again hung. I’m getting tired of having to reboot to get these things to work. Can I simply redownload Yosemite and re-install it over the current installation to see if a re-installation will help?

    Hi Bill ...
It may be corrupted Spotlight or Time Machine preferences.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Spotlight.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Spotlight.plist file to the Trash.
If that didn't help, do the same thing for:    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist

  • Time Machine And Repair Permissions Error

    Hi.
I have a new Intel Mac running Leopard. "Set up Assistant" worked like a charm and brought over all my preferences, iTunes, iPhoto etc. with out a hitch. Verified permissions and the disk and came up clean.
I bought a USB LaCie 500GB external hard drive and connected it up with the idea that I would eventually use it for Time Machine.
First thing after connecting up the new hard drive, Time Machine came up and asked if I wanted it to use the new drive as a Time Machine drive and I clicked on "cancel." Thanks to all of you I knew enough to need to GUID partition and re-format the hard drive, from the FAT 32 that it came with to Mac OS Extended (journaled) that Time Machine needs. After completing this, again, the dialog box popped up about activating Time Machine and I cancelled it again.
I have not, yet, activated Time Machine. But running permission verify and repair yielded this error message both times: Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
This is the same message seen on so many other people's machines and posted here when they run into problems with Time Machine. If I don't resolve this error, will I, too, have problems running Time Machine?
This is so weird. The only thing I did between the clean permissions verification and the one with the error was connect the USB LaCie hard drive and partition and and re-format it. Time Machine has not yet been activated on this machine.
What does this SUID warning mean? Is this something I need to worry about? Should I wait to start using Time Machine?
Or... is this not a problem but there are other things I need to do to insure a good running of Time Machine?
Thanks so much for any advice you can offer.-Charlotte

The SUID is nothing to worry about.
It is documented from Apple stating this.
Everyone of us has that error.
It has not bothered Time Machine from doing its thing.

  • Time Machine and drive permissions question

I'm using Time Machine on a MacBook with two admin accounts (let's call them admin1 and admin2). admin2 is the account used daily. admin1 is the account used very infrequently.
Things were set up with admin1. I noticed today when I was logged in as admin2 that TimeMachine reported that the last backup was more than 2 week ago (when things were set up), and that the last backup failed because the user didn't have privileges.
I did a Get Info on the drive, and it seemed to confirm that (admin 1 had read/write privileges, but admin 2 had only read access).
To get around the problem I logged in as admin1 and turned Time Machine off. I then logged in admin 2 and selected the disk from there, and turned Time Machine on.
My question is - is this normal behavior? Or if there's something wrong, how to fix it?
    Thanks...

After a few minutes, an external drive that is mounted on the desktop will spin down--like it should. But...each time a "Save" or "Save As..." dialog box is opened in any application, things will grind to halt for a few seconds while the external drive spins up--even though I will not be saving files to that drive. I've always hated that, which is one reason I've always done manual backups.
Does that happen with Time Machine (either with a drive physically or wirelessly connected via Export Extreme) and is there any way to avoid that?
It happens with TM. I am not sure of any convenient work-arounds. You can of course eject the drive and reattach it when you want to make a backup, but that's a bit inconvenient, IMO.
Is it possible to manually turn on and turn off Time Machine (and the external drive) so as to only do manual backups like I'm doing now? I don't really care about looking up a prior version of file that I've changed. I just want a reasonably current whole-disk backup.
Yes, TM has an on/off switch. Just turn it off until you want a backup. It will simply continue where it left off. It will not create a completely new backup.

  • Problems with time machine and external hard drive

    Hi all
In 2009 with my imac I bought a WD external hard drive which the computer says is 148GB formatted. I recall that the hard drive contained folders with files for the running of the hard drive when I bought it - and after it had been plugged in to a mac and used as a time machine, it no longer worked on windows computers.
Now I have used 195 GB on my computer's internal hard drive and wish to stop using the external hard drive as a time machine and instead use it for swapping files between computers and the like.
How can I wipe the time machine back ups and start using it as per usual again? do i need to obtain the WD files from somewhere?
    thanks in advance
    Nick

    Hi Nick,
Avoid the WD files completely, not needed & often a problem.
You need to erase the Drive, & to use it on both Format it MS-DOS/FAT32, on the Mac or PC, but will have a 4 GB filesize limit, as well as other limitations.
One option not mentioned yet is MacDrive for your PCs... allows them to Read/Write  & Format HFS+, so no need to reformat it...

  • Time machine disk permissions changed to read only

    Somehow, my Time Machine disk permissions have now changed tand my backups are failing;
    The permissions are:
Me - read/write, Staff  - read/write, Everyone - read only. I clicked on the lock and entered my system password, but I cannot change anything.
Then I ran Disk Utilities to repair and verify. Still nothing. I rebooted, logged out, logged back in, etc.
There is plenty of space left on the 2 GB drive. It is a Seagate GoFlex drive. This seems to be a new problems that has not surfaced before. My backups always ran flawlessly.

  • Time machine and 10.5.8

Time Machine backup to my Time Capsule worked great until I installed 10.5.8. My TC is connected to Mac via ethernet cable, and I use tc as my router as well. Now I would consistently get the error message: the volume cannot be mounted. Here's what I've tried so far:
    - reboot the system and the time capsule
    - repair the sparsebundle via disk utility- it was unrepairable
    - repaired permissions
    - used airport utility to erase the time capsule
    - turned off time machine and reselected the time capsule as the backup volume
    - trashed the timemachine .plist and rebooted again
Now when I start time machine a backup volume mounts but is stuck in "preparing mode." When time machine is active, my computer goes haywire- multiple processes and applications begin "not responding" and won't force quit, and I end up having to do a hard restart. I have been browsing threads regarding this issue and can't find any more suggestions other than what I've already tried. any ideas?

I'm experiencing a similar issue as well
No, you're not. This thread is about wireless Time Machine backups failing with "the volume cannot be mounted." message, due to a problem with the Mozy application.
also since 10.5.8. TimeMachine ran almost non-stop since I updated, and would back up Gigs at a time, even though I had not been changing the drive contents to that level. Now, TM won't run at all because my 500GB drive only has 70GB of space even though there's only one 21GB backup. It appears to have completely deleted a years worth of backups, kept only the latest, and thinks there is no room on the drive. It seems as if it tried to delete all the previous backups but couldn't.
I have never had an issue like this before, and definitely am not trying to back up 500GB at a time.
Start with item #D4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
If that doesn't help, please start a *New Topic,* including the results from the Time Tracker app mentioned in that User Tip; what else, if anything, is on your TM drive besides backups, and the messages from the +Time Machine Buddy+ as mentioned in item #A1 of the same User Tip.

  • Time Machine/Drobo backup problem

I've been looking around on these forums for a clear answer but haven't found one so I figured I would just post my exact problem and see what answers people might have.
I had been using my Drobo S as a time machine backup for about almost a year with incident. At the beginning of November I received a message that "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. The problem may be temporary. Try again later to backup." As trying again later never worked, I started a dialogue with Drobo support to see if it could be something with the machine. After a lot of troubleshooting it became clear that it wasn't the Drobo - furthermore, it seems that other people who have had similar issues have had them because of something with time machine. I was hoping someone might be able to start me on the course towards figuring this all out. Thanks.

Yes, I have tried all of the suggestions in the troubleshoot. No, not all of the files are from FCP or Adobe although the vast majority of the problem files are from my Library.
If you've tried everything in the pink box in #C3, it's possible there's a problem with your installation of Snow Leopard. I'd suggest downloading and installing the 10.6.6 "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Snow Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
If that doesn't help, reinstall OSX from your Snow Leopard Install disc (that won't affect anything else), then apply the "combo" again.
How are you connected to the Drobo?
If all else fails, then it must be a problem with the Drobo, the connection to it, or perhaps it's not compatible with the version of OSX you're on.
As for my question about support, I'm just wondering if your computer is out of it's apple care support period, do they provide any additional support to resolve issues if it turns out to be a problem with the time machine and not the drobo? If it is drobo, I am still under warranty with them.
If there's a general hardware problem, Apple will extend coverage, but rarely beyond 3 years. Sometimes an Apple Store or AppleCare will replace hardware after that period, but it's on a case-by-case basis, and appears to be fairly unusual. And this doesn't look like an Apple hardware problem (but of course, you never know).
