Time Machine and Sleep
Hi gang,
I have a 1 TB Time Capsule, and I am running Time Machine under Mac OS X 10.5.2 on a MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I've run all software & firmware updates.
Our laptop hasn't been sleeping since we started to use Time Machine a few days ago. We have our MacBook Pro set to sleep after 45 minutes, but for some reason it's not sleeping... and Time Machine keeps backing up every 60 minutes. Not sure if Time Machine is WAKING it from sleep or if it's just not going to sleep, but we certainly don't need Time Machine backing up constantly throughout the night when files aren't changing at all. Shouldn't the computer's sleep override Time Machine kicking in? It's either NOT sleeping, or Time Machine is WAKING it from sleep.
Any ideas?

I too have a similar problem and for a while I just ejected the drive everyday and once a day connected it and made a back up and re-ejected it again. I don't like this method because I only recently realised how TM is important to me (saved my work few days ago) so I started letting it run again... strangely enough, my MacBook goes to sleep during the day when I am not around. I have also noticed that external HD on which there is a TM partition turns off after a while that there is no app that uses it (as it should happen, it has only movies and other media files and my TM partition) but then all of a sudden it comes back to life and 10 minutes later falls back to sleep again. it happens all the time in the same intervals but I am not sure about when I am asleep . are these two problems connected some how? for example now the drive is working for no apparent reason... may be TM access the TM partition on regular intervals to see if anything has changed and if yes it will record the change in the next backup, this in turn keeps the drive running which in turen may keep the computer from sleeping... I will check to see if a setting to sleep in less than 10 minutes have any effect.

Hello,
Since I upgrading to Snow Leopard I experienced some problems with my usb HD unit configured as Time Machine backup. I've noticed that in case Time Machine is started and my Mac goes sleeping or I turn it sleeping with the power button then the backup fails and all the following backups fail until I repair the disk with the Disk Utility. Do someone experienced the same problem? Do I have to consider it a bug of Snow Leopard or it's a problem that happened with my LG HD?

Oddly enough, I can't find that (or any external drives) on the English language version of that site. All that's shown there are network drives, and DVD stuff. But yes, it does appear to be a standard sort of USB drive.
Anyway, the external HD is always connected by USB to my Mac and never disconnected without ejecting.
Furthemore, I assumed that powering the mac off using the main menu (as I always do) will take care to unmount all the disks automatically, won't it?
Yes, it should. Can you borrow a different USB drive somewhere temporarily, to see if the same problem occurs with it? If not, you may need to take your Mac and the drive to an authorized Apple repair location.
And/or, contact LG's support folks.

Does Time Machine and Sleep Mode work with your external USB HD???
I have a new iMac 10.7.3 with latest software updates.
Do you have an external USB hardrive that works with Time Machine turned on and Energy Saver set at 10 minutes on the computer???
If so which external USB HD are you using???
So far I have not found one that works correctly. They seem to corrupt the external USB HD requiring a reformat of the drive each time.
I need to buy one that works.
Tom..........I am presently using four different brands of external drives with Time Machine on different Macs:
Seagate
Iomega
Western Digital
Maxtor (this is an old Firewire 400 drive)
I never configured any of these drives specially for sleep or spin down. I just formatted them and then used them with Time Machine. The computers are set to sleep after various idle times raging from 10 minutes to 20 minutes. The box for "put hard disks to sleep when possible" is also checked. Two are laptops and two are iMacs.
I have never had any issues with any of these drives, and they've been used with Time Machine for over two years in some cases. That corruption you mention sounds unusual.
Did you format the drives for use with a Mac before connecting them up for Time Machine? For instance, Mac OS Extended and GUID partition table? Some PC formats won't work, for instance If you select an NTFS or FAT-formatted drive, Time Machine prompts you to reformat the drive. If you have one of these, reformat the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
I am suspecting you have a drive with one of the PC formats that isn't compatible with Time Machine. -
Interaction of Time Machine and cloned backups.
I am not sure how TM works so perhaps someone can explain what is going on here. I use TM to back-up my internal disk plus external firewire and external USB drives. The TM drive is a dedicated 1TB Lacie Firewire. In addition I keep a clone of my start-up drive (CarbonCopyCloner - CCC) on a weekly basis.
Everything works swimingly but here's the question: I recently had to restore the start-up drive after a crash by restarting and restoring from the clone. That worked OK but then TM, on its next iteration, copied the whole drive (100GB) even though the vast majority of files were the same and unchanged. Is this normal behaviour? I also got Time Machine working over AEBS but with a much simpler method.
1. Connect your USB disk directly to the Mac
2. Set up Time Machine and let your initial backup run
3. Eject the disk and connect to the AEBS
4. You need to 'touch' the disk by opening it in Finder, then Time Machine realises where it is and carries on.
Works for me on my iMac (wired) and Macbook (wireless to AEBS) - TM keeps the backups tidily with separate directories for each machine.
Still have an issue with my Macbook - it doesn't see the disks after sleeping.
Obviously Apple need to fix this - it shouldn't need me to view the disk each time so that TM can see it, and it should enable direct access to new disks via AEBS." -
I have this doubt. I've just bought an external drive, especifically a Seagate GoFlex Desk 3 tb.
I want to know if it is recomendable to make a partion exclusively for time machine and let another one so I can put there music, photos, videos, etc that I should need to use or copy to another computer.

2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two (2). Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. I need to purchase a divice to expand my Wi-fi network. I was looking at the AirPort Extreme, but a friend has a brand new Time Capsule for sale. So, for the same price of the AirPort Extreme, I´m getting the Time Capsule.

Yes. The important thing to remember is that the "extending" Time Capsule must be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from your "main" Time Capsule. -
Can I use my external HD for Time Machine and still use it for storage?
I have a 1TB external HD and my computer has yet to arrive. I was planning on backing it up via Time Machine and I'm wondering if my external HD will still be useable as a storage device once I pair it with Time Machine.
There's no way the backup will take up the full 1TB of space, so I'm hoping it doesn't just go to waste >.<If you really only want backups of the current contents, don't use Time Machine.
It's designed to keep copies of things you've changed or deleted for as long as possible. This allows you an excellent chance to recover a previous version of something you changed or deleted in error.
It also allows you to revert your entire system to the exact state it was in at the time of any previous backup, even if that's a different version of OSX. It's rare, but if an OSX update, or installation of a kernel extension or 3rd-party app makes a huge mess, it's much easier and more reliable than rebuilding everything.

I'm using Time Machine and a LaCie external drive to backup. I also have a 8 GB LaCie flash drive I want to use for small jobs. If I plug the LaCie flash drive in, is my Mac going to think it is the LaCie external drive and start trying to backup?

Everything is included unless you exclude it. How you do that is:
1. Open System Prefrences and click on Time Machine
2. Then click on Options. If you want to exclude something click the + sign and use Finder to locate it and then add it. On your next TM backup that item willl be excluded. -
I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?
Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first. -

Hallo , my question is ;whenever I delete a photo and restore it through Time machine and Western digital external hard drive , I am able to restore the photo but not the titles and descriptions . Western Digital inform me that it isn't their external hard drive problem and suggest that it is an Apple software problem ?
I am using a Macbook 4.1 , with Mac OSX 10.5.8 . I photo 7.1.5 , last modifie4d 01/05/2010 -universal . Should I be upgrading Iphoto ?
I hope that someone is able to help in this matter , as i have to restore 12000 photos !

I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles,descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .

A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
the Fusion virtual machine.If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it. -
My iPhoto app was digressed back to 9.5, not sure how I did it. I went to time machine and restored. Now it wont accept my password. tells me it is locked. Can anyone help me?
Run Repair Permissions in Disk Utility and see if that helps.
If not, you can select the iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder, go File > Get Info (or Command-i), go to the bottom of the info window and set your permissions to Read & Write. On the Action menu at the bottom (the one with the gear) choose Apply to enclosed items... -
Missing Pictures.
Have made a rebbot from Time Machine, and now I lack a lot of pictures. Can see icons, but not enlarge them. Especially pictures where 2009 is included in the date is missing?

MacBook Pro 15 "late 2008, Processor 2.53 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB, Software Mac OS X 10.7.4 Lion (11E53).1. You did not get an error message telling you that your iPhoto library was getting full. You got a message telling you that your HD was getting full, right?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
Your Library has been damaged from being run on an overfull disk.

I'm trying to connect my PC to the TV with an HDMI cable. But I'm having trouble with xrandr. xrandr lists 1920x1080 as the largest mode for HDMI and 1280x1024 as number two. So I tried both of these: xrandr --output LVDS1 --off --output HDMI2 --mode
