Time Machine asks for password to access sparse bundle on a new mac while restoring

Hello,
i know this is a common issue so i excuse myself in advance, but i couldn't find the solution to my answer so here i am.
I have been backing up (and restoring) to an external HD connected via USB to my TM.
my mac eventually decided to die (apparently doesnt like orangejuice and collapsed after a few drops of it)
my TM is configured with username access and i can correctly connect to my TM with a backup mac with my username and password.
the problem is that connecting in this way the TM wouldn't let me open the backup from the external backup (connected to TM with a net cable) and prompts me for a password.
i disconnected the external hd and connected via USB to my new mac and now the system is asking me for a password again.
i understand this password should be the one i originally had on my old mac, so i reinstalled the new mac and setup a single user with the same name and the same password, to no avail.
i think the situation is the same as in this post https://discussions.apple.com/message/21373828 which was apparently solved but the user "forgot" to tell us how
i am on a trip now with my HD with me (i NEED the data i will try till i die to get it back)
any ideas?
Thanks in advance

thank you for your answer, but that option would be good if that was not my company's mac and policy says to send it to repair (we have apple care) untouched
other than that, i dont remember setting a password when i first started the backup.
the backup was set by me in the external disk, but i can't remember having set a password for the backup specifically
i read in a post that the password has to be the same as my user's password.
in case it should also be the same id, i also created subsequent users with which to try to open the sparsebundle (502, 503, ...)
no luck
so, i wouldnt want to wait for the genius to open the mac and give me the hd back (which will happen in a week), because i need my data now and because i wouldn't want to get in a position i cant have my data back in case enext time is not the mac to leave me but the disk!

  • NOKIA 6230i asking for password to access MMC

    Hi there to every one,
I'm using a Kingston 512mb MMC with my Nokia 6230i. I do not know how it happend, but when I tried to access the MMC few days back, the phone asked for the password. I don't remember setting up any password, so I'm stuck here. The phone is not showing up any information about the card including size, free and used memory. mean while my other MMC is working fine. The phone only supports java applicatons and I could not find any to recover or reset the password.
I tried to connect the phone with my PC but its no use.
The phone askes for the password in data storage mode, and PC_Suit does not show the card in data enhancement mode.
NOTE: It is a MMC, not SD.
TIA to every one who could provide support.

Try to format the MMC either in the phone or in a computer. Slow or full format.
If it won't help, check it with some SW for errors. For instance ZAR ( Zero Assumption Recovery ).

  • Time machine asking for space it shouldn't need

I have successfully restored my iMac (running Snow Leopard) from a time machine backup following a disk erase and repartition. I have found now that Time Machine is failing to back up due to insufficient space on the external Time Machine drive. Given that it is looking for over 200Gb (it's a 300Gb machine) I suspect that it is attempting to back up the entire machine instead of just doing the incremental back up as it was previously. Can TM get out of synch with the back up drive in this way? If so, what might my solution be?

I had this issue about a month in a half ago and it was fixed by a local technician. I no longer have access to him and I really need some help. The issues are as follows:
    Safari will not open.
Firefox disappeared. No icon, just a question mark in it's place.
When I open mail it shows I have new messages but the content is blank.

  • How to stop Time Machine from trying to resize a sparse bundle

With 10.8, I'm backing up wirelessly from my MacBook Pro to a sparse bundle on a Drobo connected to a Mac mini on the same network. I used Drobo's Time Tamer to create the sparse bundle. The sparsebundle is a set size and cannot be resized (this is intentional to avoid filling the Drobo which is mostly used to store non-backed up non-critical data.
Every step of the backup process works, but Time Machine spends a good 20-30 minutes during each backup "resizing" the disk image. It doesn't actually suceed in resizing the disk image, but it displays "Looking for Backup Disk" in the Time Machine menu while Console reveals that it's resizing the disk image ("Resizing backup disk image from 17.59 TB to 17.59 TB"). It doesn't cause any errors, but it does turn the backup time from a few minutes
Does anyone know of a workaround to disable this resizing step or to make it fail quickly and proceed with the rest of the backup normally?
I wasn't using Time Machine before upgrading to 10.8 from 10.7, so I don't know if this is a new issue with Mountain Lion. I suspect that this would happen in earlier OS versions too.

I'm experiencing it on a Synology NAS. Time Machine always starts by "Resizing backup disk image from 1.07 TB to 1.07 TB." In the status bar, it just displays "looking for backup disk."
I don't have any solutions yet. Would definitely be interested to hear. I think it might have to do with the fact that I increased the user's disk quota (on the NAS) after doing the initial time machine backup. While Time Machine correctly identified the extra space as available, it somehow can't get over the fact that it changed once.
    Things I have done:
Manually ran hdiutil resize -size 1000g *.sparseimage. This did change the reported disk size in the disk's Info.plist, but the next backup still did the resize step.

  • Time machine is not recognizing my existing sparse bundle

On my MB Pro with OS 10.8 I have been making backups for two weeks to a new Time Capsule 3TB. Time Machine (and my Mac) lost the ability to connect to the drive called Data on the TC. In Airport Utility everything looked fine. After some messing around (restart TC, reboot Mac, remove the Data drive in TM Preferences and then select it again as the backup disk) I find myself with Time Machine connecting to the Time Capsule, but trying to create a new backup from scratch. It appears not to be recognizing the old Sparse Bundle. Is there anything I can do to get TM to recognize the old Sparse Bundle?

Does it just show "None" for the backup dates, or does it actually show it's going to back up a huge amount of data?
The "None" is very misleading -- it just means the preferences window hasn't been updated (and won't be until the next backup is finished).
Did you change the setting for Secure Shared Disks (on the Disks panel of Airport Utility) to or from With Accounts"?  If so, that will cause a new backup, as they're stored differently.
Log on to an Admin account. Via the Finder, see if there are two sparse bundles, something like this (in Column View):

I can't update my apps each time it asks for password when entered it goes straight back to update. I don't think I am alone in this. I have tried changing the date, rebooting, switching off and on signing out and nothing works. Does anyone know of a solution or will I have to take it to an apple shop. • Outlook 2007 and 2010 on Windows XP keeps asking for password

I have a fresh installation of Exchange 2013 installed on Windows 2012 and the problem is that Outlook 2007 and 2010 which is installed on Windows XP keeps asking for password.
The problem occurs only on Windows XP while on Windows 7 is working fine.
    Any help will be appreciated!

    Hello
I had similar issue in my environment  -Exchange 2010 SP2 UR4-v2 ,DAG 2 MBX servers(MBX1 and MBX2) in production site ,2 CAS in production site ,17 mail box databases , Public folder replicated to all the mailbox servers.
strangely users using outlook 2003 and outlook 2007 were being prompted for user name passwords.
    investigations were done as follows
    1. test connection status -click on the outlook icon in the lower right of the users desktop.clicked on test connection status ..
    2. found that the username was being prompted while attempting to connect to the public folder in MBX1 server.
    3. using EMC on the exchange server, changed databases pointing to public folder in MBX1 to public folder in MBX2.  This solved the issue for us.however we were not sure of what the exact issue was ..was it public folder corruption in MBX1? .we found
that the users were being prompted for username and password only in outlook 2007 and not in OWA or outlook 2010. this made us rule out possibility of Public folder corruption in MBX1 server.
4.raised a case with microsoft to do a RCA (root cause analysis) . The resolution from them was to change the exchange RPC service on MBX1 from "network service" to  "local account" and switch back to "network service".
The reason stated by microsoft is "password cache corruption" .Any ways the problem was solved at the server level.
Hope this helps all of you who have been scratching your head over this issue

  • Using time capsule model A1409 and trying to use it as only backup. Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule. And also it is asking for password. Have tried all of mine and it will not work.

Want to us my time capsule model A1409  as only backup. 2 TB hard drive.
Already have Verizon wireless router. Do not want to use Time capsule as router, only back up for iMac.
Do not know which cable port to use in back of time capsule to Ethernet port back of my iMac.
And also it is asking for password for the server John Garland's Time Capsule so Time machine can access it..
Have tried all of passwords can think of and none work.
Held the reset button for one second on back of capsule and do not see if anything happened.
    What a conundrum.
Appreciate any help to get this working.
    Thanks,
    John R

I have a 2TB Timecapsule and really only use it for Time Machine backups. But the Wi-Fi side is used to sync my iPad at times.
    Mine is wiredup thus;
Eth cable from iMac to modem (not the WAN port should you have one),  then eth cable from modem to T/Cap in the WAN port (bottom port with an O sign above it)
I believe when its connected up you may have to set up a wireless network. Follow the instructions to set up Wi-Fi and Network
and then give it a password. The WiFi icon should appear in the menu bar where you can switch it on or off.
Its been sometime since I set it with the help of Apple Techs so I might be a bit rusty.

  • Asking for password for keychain access, but won't accept my password... What's up with this?

Restarted my MacBook just now and it's got a continuous stream of pop ups asking for password for keychain access, won't accept my password, won't go away (cancel), any suggestions.

    Hello Al323,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Keychain Access on your Mac.  I found a couple of articles I suggest for the issue you described.
Your keychain uses your the same password as your login password.  If it is not accepting that password, I recommend running the Keychain First Aid using the steps in this article:
Mac OS X 10.6: Solving problems with keychains
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7296
If you are still repeatedly seeing a prompt to enter your Keychain Access password, you may need to reset your keychain.  This will create a new keychain so any saved passwords on the old keychain will not be available, and you will need to enter them when accessing sites for the first time again.  Follow the steps in the article below to create a new keychain:
OS X: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1631
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

When I look up the account the "password" is a long string of gobbledygook. Something I would never do.
But when I attempt to use that pw I still can't get in.
I have no trouble accessing that email account on my mac mini. Just on the macbook.

    Maiko,
I'm confess I'm still trying to get a handle on your problem. You do a fantastic job of describing it ... but I'm just trying to picture it accurately in my head.
I think, were I in your shoes, I'd begin by looking at what the debug page has to say for the specific destination in which you're interested in fixing. In other words, I'm not clear on where, exactly, this destination points ...
    Destination illinois.edu.1945806043
Is that your site, or the division within your site that you want to fix? "Normally", you do not need to specify a site handle to get to your site within your transfer CGI ... if you say "uillinois.edu", it's enough to transfer your users to iTunes U ... but every site still has a handle, and you could, if you wanted to, actually specify it in your transfer CGI. For example, this:
    Destination uic.edu.1139051993
is for my entire site ... it's my site handle. Whereas this:
    Destination uic.edu.1991288441
is for a division within my site ... but it's impossible to tell the difference between "site" and "division" from just the handle (I mean, if I didn't say "this is a site" and "this is a division", there'd be no way for you to know). So when I look at your creds and permissions on your debug page, I can't quite tell if they give you download access for your site, or for the specific division you want to fix. If you could open the debug page with your division as destination (or confirm that that's what we're looking at), it'd rule out some things.
