Time machine back up canceled Network destination already mounted

I need some help here. I have nearly torn out my remaining hair.
I have for 5 years successfully backed up, using Time Machine,  my iMac to a direct attached WD MyBook 2TB running raid. The My book has run out of space so I recently acquired a WD MY BOOK Live DUO  and am running it as Router attached storage.  I have struggled for 2 weeks but back ups keep failing. Latest message is as follows: "
Starting standard backup
Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://;AUTH=No%20User%[email protected]/TimeMachine
Mounted network destination at mountpoint: /Volumes/TimeMachine using URL: afp://;AUTH=No%20User%[email protected]/TimeMachine
Network destination already mounted at: /Volumes/TimeMachine
Backup canceled."
I have tried powering off and on, reformatting. I have even gone back to the WD My book to check time machine still working and it picks up just fine.
Any help appreciated.

Unfortunately you are pretty much on  your own because TM is not designed to be backed up over a network unless of course you are using a Time Capsule, otherwise you will have to deal with WD. BTW while you have had decent luck with your prior WD many users do not share that experience with OS X, while their HD's are just fine the enclosures WD uses tend to be problematic. My suggestion is to both connect the device up locally to the iMac and also to replace the WD with a higher quality EHD such as an OWC Mercury Elite Pro.

  • Network destination already mounted when start Time Capsule backup after reboot

Just installed a new Time Capsule to replace my router, and noticed that when I reboot my home machine the intial attempt to backup always fails. (Running OS X 10.7.2 on a early 2011 15 inch MBP.)
Here is the Time Machine log:

    Giving up after 3 retries.
    Backup failed with error: 21
I then get a popup from Time Machine that says "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Wayne's Macbook Pro.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1).
I see "Time Machine Backups" on my desktop, and can access the drive via Finder.
If I use Finder to go into "Volumes" I can eject "Time Machine Backups" and the "Data" directory. If I then reselect the Time Capsule from the Time Machine settings window the backup works. Backups continue to work until the next time i reboot the machine.

Is the problem because something is causing the system to mount the Data drive at startup, then Time Machine tries to mount it again? Any suggestions? I've done some searching in the support forums and FAQs but can't find anything that seems to match my situation. (No doubt due to my inexperience with Time Capsule / Time Machine. <grin>)
Many things for any suggestions and/or links to suggested solutions so I dont' have to take any manual actions after a reboot.

At least if yours is a new Time Capsule you can beat up on Apple Support to get them to fix it.   So far no-one seems to have aroused Apple's interest in this issue.   I expect Apple have judged it less critical than whatever other teething problems have shown up with the launch of iCloud.  Apple are probably overwhelmed.

  • Can Time Machine back up data stored on a mounted external drive?

Can Time Machine back up the data that I have stored on an external drive? It's mounted on the desktop but I can't seem to add it to Time Machine.
Is it that Time Machine doesn't back up mounted External Hard Drives? If so, does anyone have a hack?

then the problem is not those external drives. As I said, I've never seen this particular error message.
Try using a different connection or a different port for your TM drive. If that doesn't help I'm afraid your options are very limited.
Unfortunately, TM is configured in such a way that when anything goes wrong, there is usually nothing a user can do short of reformatting the TM drive and starting backups anew. I'm very much afraid that's what you are looking at.
At least, I have no other advice to offer.

  • Time machine back-up stuck on "cleaning up" before actually showing back-up progress

On my MacBook Pro running latest Snow Leopard, after replacing the internal HD and restoring the data from the Time Machine back-up apparently seamlessly, when starting back-up again to the the same external disk connected to another mac on the network, this happened.  Almost 12 hours now.  There is activity on the external back-up disk as the LED light is blinking and I can hear it work.
The message in Time Machine Preferences pane is "cleaning up" which usually shows at the end of the back-up but this time it is before any progres has shown.
I have Time Machine Buddy widget installed and this is what it says, again for the last 12 hours or so:
    Starting standard backup
Network destination already mounted at: /Volumes/TM WD Book-1
Failed to attach to image: /Volumes/TM WD Book-1/Vladskibook.sparsebundle, DIHLDiskImageAttach returned: 35
Disk image /Volumes/TM WD Book-1/Vladskibook.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups
Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
    Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
Should I just wait patiently or perform a repair of the back-up disk or do a full reset of Time Machine?
If I should wait, can I use my mac without affecting this process?
    Thanks

    Hi Pondini,
Yes, I bought DiskWarrior 4.1.1 - it came up with this report:
" DiskWarrior has successfully built a new optimized directory for the disk named "Untitled."
The new directory is ready to replace the original directory."
Did you let it do that? If not, nothing was changed!
The drive is still under guarantee - can they really fail this quickly?
Sure, a few drives from any production run will be D.O.A, and a few others will fail very quickly, as with nearly any manufactured product.
But you don't know yet whether the drive is bad. If you didn't let DW replace the directory, run it again and do so.
If it's still troublesome, try the other things in my last post before deciding it's the drive.

  • Snow Leopard Time Machine - Backup to a Network Drive is it possible?

I have a MacBook Pro 17" 2.5Ghz, with a 250gb harddrive, running Snow Leopard 10.6.1. I want to do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard and I want to run a backup first. I don't have any external drives big enough for the job, but I do have network drives that have enough space. Can anyone give me directions on how to set up Time Machine to work with network destination drives? I read an online article that it was possible to do this with Leopard, though I never got it to work. If all else fails, I'll have to buy a new external drive. (Money's tight right now though.) If any of you have recommendations for good fast external drives, I'd appreciate your opinions on that too. (But I really hope I can get the network drives to work.) Thanks!

Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or a drive running Leopard or Snow Leopard on another Mac on the same local network. It will often back-up to a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme, but even that is, technically, unsupported, and may require running a special Terminal command to make it work.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some hardware or "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.

  • Creating Encrypted Time Machine Back Ups to a Network Hard Drive

Hello all, I can't seem to create an encrypted Time Machine back up on a network hard drive.  Can this be done?  And if not, why not?  It seems that Macs have all the necessary functionality already available in Mac OS. Time Machine can create encrypted backups with multiple computers so what's the difference if it is to a network backup drive, honestly?  Any suggestions?
My Set up:  Three Macs, Airport Extreme Base Station, Seagate 3 TB HD (with separate partitions for each computer's backups).  2 of the Macs use ethernet to connect to the network and one uses wireless regularly.  Basically, I'm trying to encrypt my family's backup drive and I don't know how or why I can't.
Thanks in advance for the help.
    Appleguy514

First, you need to know that backing-up that way is unreliable and not supported by Apple.   See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.
Second, no, you cannot encrypt a network backup on Lion or earlier.  Only Mountain Lion.

I have just upgraded to leopard and I'm trying to set Time Machine up with my network hard drive. I have a network of a few macs so I have a Lacie 1TB ethernet drive which all machine back up to. It seems when I mount the drive in Leopard, the Time Machone does not recognise it to back up to. Any suggestions please?

Nope. I do the same exact thing. If you have DVD's and blu-rays you can't download a free application called Handbrake. You can set it to Apple TV2 automatic format and they will come out as playable m4v's that can play I'm iTunes. All you have to do is turn on Home Sharing in both iTunes and your Apple RV and you'll be good to go!

This is just standard Lion and Mountain Lion.
Unplug the TC power cord.. count to 10.. plug it back in.

  • Can time machine back up on a wireless network

I would like to find a way to back up my Mac other than on an external drive. Besdides Time Capsule, can Time Machine back up onto other wireless networks? Also, is there a preferred, Mac-friendly online backup available (that may or may not use Time Machine)? I was considering using Carbonite.

Time Machine can backup to any device that has Time Machine Extensions.. eg some NAS have this.. or another Mac. Maybe some routers with USB drives.. I have heard of Netgear Mac compatible models.. but never forget.. apple change things around with every OS release and these companies will always be playing catchup.
You may also find it not easy at all to setup Time Machine.. I use a Zyxel NAS single disk model that does support Time Machine.. it has been fine.. but the setup is far more complicated than any TC.
Very few other devices will have TM available .. but if you use a third party software, then they will generally backup to any shared partition or drive in the network.
Buy a second hand TC and modify the power supply.. put in a big hard disk.. you can simply plug it into the existing network.. you will find it hard to get anything cheaper that works as well.. and none that will be as easy to setup.
Fine if you give up on TM.. then whatever external drive the software uses.. no issues.. but TM is designed to only work on HFS+ partition.

time machine back up not completed due to backup disk image "/volumes/data/.....imac.sparsebundle" is already in use.  How do I fix?

Pull the power cable from the back of the Time Capsule
    Wait a few minutes
Insert the power cable back in the back of the Time Capsule
This will fix the problem 90% of the time. If no luck, see #C12 in this great support document by Pondini:

  • Getting Time Machine back up to a Sparsebundle on external HDD (Drobo)

    Hey,
I've been chasing this issue around for a while but can't seem to find the answer.
There are a lot of resources out there describing how to get your Mac to backup to a Sparsebundle on a NAS, and more resources telling you how to write protect the Info.plist file so that Mac OS doesn't resize the image to take up all of your NAS.
However I've got a Drobo connected directly to my Mac Mini. The Drobo pretends to have a 16TB drive so that you can add storage as and when you need it.
I am already using it to back up my MBP over the network to a Sparsebundle and until recently I was using the same scheme (a size limited sparsebundle) to back up the Mac Mini that the Drobo is connected to.
I achieved this by following the excellent directions on http://anitechtalk.wordpress.com/2010/07/19/time-machine-dns323/ (one of the only sites that mentions the new way that Apple handles Time Machine Sparsebundles)
However this has recently stopped working and no matter what I do I still cannot get my Mac to see the Sparsebundle as a TimeMachine aware 'drive'- instead it just backs up to the root of the '16TB' Drobo- and at some point it's going to get rather full.
    Argh.
(And yes, I know that the other solution is to re-partition my Drobo to have a small partition at the start of the disk for Time Machine to use- but it's too late for that as I've already got 1.85TB of data on there and I doubt that I can re-partition that without losing all of the data.)
Can anyone help me get Time Machine to accept my Sparsebundle as a 'disk' that it can backup to?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the video link. I did it pretty much exactly the way the young man explained. The one thing I didn't do was click "customize" as he does and unclick the multiple language support and he also clicks "rosetta" to support older programs. I wonder if that's the issue? The guys at Macmall told me that I would need to update the o.s. before I restored. I did that originally but have since (as mentioned before) erased the main drive. I noticed that when he does his install, his external drive does not show up on the list in which you want to install the o.s. on... should I unplug my external? I'm just trying to look at ever detail. I know the recovery file is there. The one thing it (the external) did say before I started posting here was "in progress". I'm not sure what that means? I promise I'm not an idiot. I consider myself an above average user. I usually help other that have issues... but I've yet to restore from a Time Machine back-up and I'm looking forward to learning how to do it.... the right way. I appreciate all of the advice. I have some pretty important files on my external back-up. I am really hoping that this is possible. I'm beginning to think the external is where the issue lies. The "in progress" next to the file name concerns me. I know there's a lot of data on the drive because it's nearly half full. So there's stuff there....
    Deep breath in...... reeee laaaaaaaxxxx
