Time Machine back up entire drive the first time it is used?

WWhy doesn't Time Machine back up the entire drive the first time it is used?

If the size of the backup fails to match the size of the used space on the backed up disk drive, it could because of the fact that it only backs up what is needed for recovery of the disk drive. It does not backup Trash, cache files or swap files which could account for the difference.

How long should it take to back up iphone for the first time with about 6 gigs?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first back up to iCloud may take some considerable time. Just how long isn't really possible to say without knowing how much is in your back up and your connection speed.
What many people don't realise is that upload speeds are often significantly less than download speeds, so for example a user may have a download speed of 40 Mbps, but only 1 Mbps for uploading. As a rough guide it will take around 2 ¼ hours to upload 1 GB of data at 1 Mbps.

  • Is it possible for Backing Bean to drive  the rendering of  JSP page ?

    Any thoughts on this ......
"Backing Beans should drive the rendering of first jsp page in the application " and not jsp page driving the backing bean or not to put some kind of hard coding in jsp page to see if its admin user then display certain set of UI Components or certain set of other UI components for other users.
As we have atleast 10 different Roles and there can be Composite Roles i.e. combination of two roles. In this case how does the Backing Bean drives the rendering just the first jsp page in the application?

You can connect to it with file sharing, but you won't be able to use it as an installation source. In other words, you won't be able to reboot the G4 and see that drive over the network to boot from it.
If your G4's optical drive is consistently problematic, you could replace it quite easily and cheaply (if it's a desktop), or you might look at external optical drives.

Ah, well, then the notes are probably gone. Did you save any of the email from that account on your computer? The notes might be there if you did.

If you can't get the password correct, you CANNOT restore from that backup.
However, if you've been using your phone as recommended by Apple, there should be minimal data loss.
Your iTunes library is on your computer, so you can synch all your apps, music, movies, ringtones, etc, on to your new phone.
Similarly, contacts should be synched to Address Book, Outlook, or a cloud service for you to easily synch back to your new phone.
Pictures taken from your old phone and not synched to your computer are lost, but you would have been synching those photos to your computer frequently as recommended.  Other photos that you synch TO your iPhone are still on your computer.
You won't be able to get text messages back.

I just acquired my first blackberry phone  model-9810. What are the different simple  steps or the procedure that I should follow  to correctly use this instrument, i.e., telephone features first, internet features later. Your assistance to a newbie is highly appreciated.     All the best!

  • Time Machine really toooo low for the first back up!

I'm backing up my HD for the first time but after 8 hours it has backed up only 29GB out of 97GB of my Mac Book Pro: is it normal???

What is system.log reporting for the TM backup process named "backupd" ?
Some people don't recommend USB2 devices for backup but IMO they are AOK. The first backup of tens of GBs might be a bit slower than FW400 but this really is only an issue for the first backup. Subsequent backups/snapshots will go along just fine. USB2 is also a more common external device that is FW and normally cost less.
Post back the system.log backupd messages and maybe we can get some clues from that.
I agree that 8 hrs is too long and suspect there's a holdup somewhere.

  • Time Capsule is backing up like its the first time - every time.

I have 60+ gigs to backup. It takes a full two days for the first backup. No problem. The problem is that after the initial backup, it should only check and 'update' new material and add to the backup. I understand this just takes a few moments.
My Time Capsule doesn't do this. It begins backing up the entire 60+ gigs again - which takes 2 full days.
I can't find a setting anywhere to adjust this and find nothing in the manual.
    Anybody?

Some of it.. is the difference between digital bytes and binary bytes.
You are contrasting the Apple bytes and Orange bytes and worrying why they don't match up.. they will never match up. They are not the same.
If you did not realise it, apple changed the way TM reads the disks to digital bytes.. so a 2TB drive does not format to 1.8TB which is the correct size in binary bytes. (real bytes)
Your HD info on the other hand is actually measuring binary bytes.
    If you did not realise..
    Here is v5.6 airport utility
Here is v6 airport utility looking at the same drive.
    And Time Machine.
How does one version of the utility see the disk as 2TB and the other as 1.8TB.. simple.. one is real bytes and the other is the hard disk manufacturers way of making disks look bigger than they are.. ie digital bytes.
So nowadays I just ignore everything the Mac tells you about file sizes because none of it is now believable. What is truth? When you stop having standards then truth is in the eye of the advertising man and you always get the biggest number for specs and lowest number for price.. and neither are true.
if you are using digital bytes or binary bytes.. so think of it as your maths teacher taught you.. 6 apples does not equal 6 oranges.  And when you throw away the standard who knows what you are counting.
Check Pondini for info about what size a backup really is.

  • Time Machine Backs Up 30-39G every day ??? Using too much Space on the TC

I installed the TC about 2 weeks ago. The first backup went as plan and took all night. But the problem (I think) is that incremental backups take place during the day but every day at the end of the day the TM does a 30 to 39G backup and is using up all the space on the TC. I am sure I am not adding 30 something G every day. Can someone tell me how to setup the TM to not use all the space. I got the TC 500G 2 weeks ago and is down to 219G of free space. I think that is not right.
    Please help
    Thanks

That should do it. Time Machine will backup an active VM each hour if there are changes (i.e. VM is running). That amounts to 2GB+ per hour depending on the size of your VM.
To recovery that space, you need to delete the file (and all versions) from the backup. Open Finder and go to your VM folder. Click on the Time Machine icon on the Dock. Click on that file and click the Gears button. You will be given the option of +Delete All Backups of -----+. All instances of this file will be delete from TM.
To backup your VM, occasionally drag and drop the VM folder to a folder on your backup drive. TM will not touch this.
For Fusion user, go to settings and set up a shared folder outside of the VM. Fusion will then access and save to this folder. Corruption of the VM will not affect these documents. As well, TM will back up this folder as long as you have not excluded it.
    Good luck!

  • Time Machine backing up a drive which is no longer connected

I have recently removed (and replaced) one of my external drives. I have Time Machine running on third drive. When I look at my recent backups, Time Machine is still creating a folder (and contents) for the drive that no longer exists. The only difference being, it is putting " 1" after the drive name. What is going on?

    *Bump*
I'm going to be switching my Timemachine drive shortly, and I'm considering not transfering my backs, just to get around this bug. Obviously that's not ideal, so if anyone can shed light on this it would be great.

  • Does time machine back up second drives

I have a second drive installed in my MacBook Pro for document storage, etc.  I replaced my optical drive with a second drive.  Does Time Machine back up the second drive as well?

Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences and verify that the drive isn't excluded. Drives in some formats, such as FAT32, can't be backed up by Time Machine.

  • Time Machine backs up everything all the time

Time Machine is backing up every file all the time. This is a recent development.
Don't know if this is related but I installed 10.6 on an external HD recently. I was told there wasn't room on the time machine disk so i turned off time machine. I used that boot disk for a week and then switched back to the 10.5.8 drive. After that but I can't be sure the exact date is correlated I noticed the Time Machine backup.

I figured out how much is being backed up by looking at the size of the files on the time machine disk in the finder and with omnidisksweeper.
Those won't show an accurate picture. Time Machine uses an unusual and complex structure, involving multiple hard links (sort of like aliases) at both the file and folder level. The files that were the same at the time of each backup will be counted +*in each backup,+* although they were only backed-up once; the total will exceed the total amount of space used on the disk.
For some reason on Mar 6 Time machine did a new full backup--650GB. Then it said it couldn't do any incremental backups because there wasn't enough free space--the drive had about 300GB free but Time Machine said it needed another 302GB which makes me think it wanted to do another full backup.
Yes, that's possible. Some of the common causes are listed in #D3 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
When TM decided it needed to do a full backup, it likely deleted all but the last one, trying to make enough room. Unfortunately, your logs for March 6 are probably gone by now, so we can't figure out exactly what happened then, much less why.
I then excluded all but 100G of files. Time machine did a full backup of that 100G and then on the next days backup it also did a full backup. Files that hadn't been touched were copied based on looking in the Finder and omnidisksweeper said the files were taking the full amount of space as well.
Again, that's not necessarily so. Click here to download the TimeTracker app. It shows most of the files saved by TM for each backup (excluding some hidden/system files, etc.). Some prefer the BackupLoupe application.
Either one should clarify whether everything is really being backed-up each time. Take a look at the subsequent backups from after you excluded all but 100 GB, and post back with your findings.

  • How can I empty trash from outboard Time Machine back up hard drive?

I cannot wempty the trash from my outboard Time Machine Hard Drive. I keep getting error messages.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive
