Time Machine back up filling with Fusion 2.0.1 Boot Camp virtual machine

Hi all, I want to report and share something (don't actually know if it's a bug).
I finally solved an issue that was maddening me since weeks: my Leopard 10.5.6 Time Machine was backing up lots of gigabytes of data even if I wasn't writing to files that much lately. I tried to exclude everything I was aware of having a large size, and I even did not have a Fusion VM at all at a certain point in */Users/MyUser/Documents/Virtual Machines*. The only virtual machine I am using is the virtualized Bootcamp partition with Vista installed. But I didn't care about it because I was sure Time Machine wasn't going to backup it (i.e. I thought it was excluded by default being another partition!). Instead, I finally succeded in tracking down (with a free app called "Time Tracker", google for it) the culprit to a *Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm* file, several gigabytes large (actually large as much as the used space in the Boot Camp partition), that's found under
*/Users/MyUser/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/%2Fdev%2Fdisk0*
So I went in Time Machine options dialog and excluded */Users/MyUser/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp*.
Then the problem was solved...now I need only to mount the sparsebundle and erase all the old backups of that file to recover some more space in Time Capsule...
Hopefully this will be helpful to someone else!
Cheers!

No, not a bug. By default TM will back-up any drive/partition it can read, except the TM backup drive/partition itself.

  • Problems with Windows XP SP3 in Boot Camp

    Hi,
I have recently received a 21.5" iMac; it is the higher-end of the 21.5" standard configurations. The problems I am having, I believe, specifically relate to drivers.
Firstly, I get no sound whatsoever in Windows XP SP3 (boot camp); I have tried removing and reinstalling the drivers from the Snow Leopard install disc, but no success. I have no yellow question marks in the device manager window, but the absence of audio still persists.
Secondly, I cannot gain access to the special functions of the Apple wireless keyboard in Windows XP SP3 via Boot Camp. Again, I have tried reinstalling the drivers, but no success. I have read an Apple support document which states that the keys are only supported on late 2009 Macs; I own one of these Macs, so that cannot be the problem.

Keep in mind of the following:
ZFS uses any memory available (up to the limit) for a so-called ARC cache. This can cause issues in a demo setup, because VDI may falsely report that there is not enough memory for starting up any virtual machine. To resolve this issue, adapt the max value used for the ARC cache.
For example, to restrict the memory to 2GB, add the following line in /etc/system:
    set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 2147483648(Text copied from: [VDI Demo (Featuring Sun VirtualBox)|http://wikis.sun.com/display/VDI3dot1/VDI+Demo+%28Featuring+Sun+VirtualBox%29] )

  • Can I run a Mountain Lion Time Machine Back up if I have a Snow Leopord boot up disc?

HI, I have a new hard drive in my Mac after my old hard drive crashed.
The only boot up disk I have is a Snow Leaoprd (which came with the computer). However, I had since upgraded to Mountain Lion. My most recent Time Machine Back ups were all on in Mountain Lion.
My question....If I use the Snow Leopard boot disc, will I be able to restore the Mountain Lion back up through TIme Machine? Or do I need a Mountain Lion boot disc?
    Thanks!!

Restart with the Command-R keys held down to get to the Mountain Lion recovery volume that you can use to reinstall or reload from backup, or if your drive has just been replaced and does not have this, then if your system was made in 2011 or later then it likely has an internet-recovery option to load these tools, which can be started by booting with Option-Command-R held down.
Alternatively you can create your own external recovery drive using Apple's Recovery Disk Assistant tool (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1433) to use if your system does not support Internet Recovery and you need to access these tools. To boot to this external drive once created, boot with the drive attached and the Option key held down, and then select it from the boot menu that appears.

  • How do I use a time capsule back up drive with anew macbook

for a new Macbook Air 2014, how do I run time capsule with the backup drive used on prior old macbook (which was transferred to the new one...)

Not quite because the unique identifiers for each are different. However, it should be possible to do what you want, but I don't remember what you need to do. So, visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with this. Should be a relevant FAQ on his site.

  • Bootable Time Machine with Lion 10.7.2 - Boot Camp issues.

    Hey all,
I have done as I was told and updated Lion as the updates have appeared. Now, it seems, I have a bootable Time Machine drive where before, I have not been able to boot from the Time Machine drive (never installed a System folder, etc.).
The problem here is that when I try to use Boot Camp and still have my Time Machine drive installed, (I see the drive when holding the option key to select boot drive), Boot camp gets "stuck" not knowing how to boot unless I disconnect the Time Machine drive. It appears that Windows thinks that it has two boot drives and doesn't know what to do, until the Time Machine drive is pulled.
Anyone else, or is this just me?
And when did Lion install the bootable folder on Time Machine??
    Thanks

You say your "backups still turn up corrupted now and then" - how do you know? Is it only when you try to access them that you will know this?
Sometimes a backup will fail, sometimes you can't access them, sometimes you'll get this message:
See #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details.
And by this stage is it too late to recover anything?
Sometimes.    Sometimes they can be repaired by Disk Utility.  Sometimes only a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app like DiskWarrior ($100) can fix them.  Sometimes nothing can.  Sometimes you can restore some individual items, sometimes not.  Sometimes you can do a full system restore from some backups, other times not.
does it help that I am using a Gigabit WIRED connection between iMac - 10/100/1000 switch - Airport Extreme Base Station?
Probably -- you won't have WIFI interference.
But if you have an iMac, why not just connect the external HD directly to your Mac?  That's much faster and more reliable (and supported).
You'd need to erase the disk in that case, since Time Machine won't bother with a sparse bundle at all on a direct backup.  Just format the disk as GUID, with Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and let 'er rip!

  • (Cross Post! SORRY!)  Having trouble with Mac Pro and Vista/Boot Camp

I feel like this board is more populated, so I thought I'd post this here as well. Forgive me.
Ok, so it took me forever to install Vista. It kept saying my partition wasn't valid even after I'd format it. After restarting like 15 times it finally went through. So, it installed.
BUT, now I have two issues. When Vista starts, I get this weird jumble of like MS-DOS text talking about partitions, weird numbers, my monitors just flash and kinda go nuts with the text then at the top after like 10 second of text, it says 'booting windows vista' with more ms-dos text. Finally after 30 seconds of that, it shows me that green bar that shows up to load Vista then voila, Vista is up and running. The OS works fine, but no matter what, I go through that jumble of text. Any way to get rid of it? What's wrong with it?
Also, now that I've installed Vista, I can't get back into OS X. I have a wireless PC keyboard and a wireless bluetooth Apple keyboard, so I don't know what to do. When I go into Vista's Control Panel to select Startup Disk it says it can't load the program. So I'm at a loss. I really wanna get back into OS X!
    Any help would be fantastic!!

Ok, I fixed the issue by using the wireless PC keyboard. I put the Vista install DVD in the drive and restarted the computer. The computer wouldn't recognize the OS X DVD.
I remembered that the computer would register the keyboard inputs after restarting from the Vista Install Screen, so I restarted, held down alt on the PC keyboard and it worked!
Now with the apple keyboard working, I restarted and reset the PRAM which made the computer boot into OS X by default instead of Vista.
BUT, I still get that weird DOS text every time I load Vista, and now after keeping Vista running for a few hours, it starts kinda glitching over time. It loses connection with the network (I had to physically unplug and plug back in the ethernet cable to get it to recognize the network) and for some reason in order to use my apple keyboard, I have to turn it off and on when I get into Vista. It's annoying.
Anywho, if anyone can help me with my Vista problems, that'd be grand :P

  • Wireless issues with MacBook Pro i5 in Boot Camp Windows 7 x64

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro i5 15''. I'm usually connecting to the 802.11n 5Ghz wireless network of my Time Capsule when running OS X, which works absolutely fine. When running Windows 7 x64 in Boot Camp though, this network can't be found and I have to connect to my secondary 802.11g network of an AirPort Express. Even this network connection usually dies after a few minutes of intensive use though (copying files, playing online games; it's fine with low activity like web surfing). It still appears connected normally, but no data is being transmitted. I have to reset the wireless adapter to get it to work again. The same network works fine for any OS X device.
The Windows drivers for the Broadcom chip in this machine seem really flaky. Anybody else have these problems or maybe a solution?

Yes, sorry, the Boot Camp area would have been a better place to ask. After some more googling I found a helpful thread though, which led me to download this driver package:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?swItem= ob-80585-1&lang=en&cc=us&idx=3&mode=4&
From it I installed the driver called "Broadcom 43225 802.11b/g/n", and presto, I can finally use my 802.11n network under Windows. Hope that's helping other people that may have this problem.

  • How to install Windows 7 on MacBook with Tiger + Leopard upgrade using Boot Camp

    Hi,
I've had Vista installed on a separate partition on my MacBook for a while, but wanted to upgrade to Windows 7. I've completely wiped the HDD, re-installed Tiger, upgraded to Leopard and installed Windows 7 using boot camp from within OSX. However, I now can't boot back into OSX - I believe it's because I don't have the latest version of Boot Camp within Windows 7 (it doesn't appear on the task bar), but I also don't have a full copy of Leopard, only the upgrade disk.
Is there any way to (a) boot back into OSX (I've tried holding down the option key and this doesn't work) and (b) installing a version of Boot Camp that will enable me to switch between both operating systems as I was when Vista was installed & without having to purchase the full copy of Leopard?
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Elliot.

Try to boot from the 10.4 disk then and "Repair Disk". If you can, then try booting from the 10.5 disk and do the same.
Have you tried holding down the C key also when trying to boot from the Install disks? It could take 30 seconds to a minute or more for the C key/Option key reboots. The Mac DVD HAS to be the OS installer disk not the applications installer, etc,. Sorry if I keep bringing this up.
You have to keep holding it down the whole time it boots, either it will bypass it and reboot into Windows or it should get to the boot loader window with at least Windows showing up.
If you can still boot into Windows with no problems then Windows SHOULD show up in the boot loader window. (C key/Option key) It's hardware related, it's the computers manual way of looking for a bootable OS if there's no OS installed yet.
Don't forget to disconnect any USB devices until you get it fixed.
Also try to boot from the Windows  installer disk and "Repair Windows" and see what happens.
Other then your DVD drive may be on it's last legs, I can't really think of any reason you can't boot from the Mac DVD's.  All the other post's I searched for eventually got the DVD boot working, even 10.6 and 10.7 are having that issue, tho rarely.

Hi, ...........inserting the Leopard disk once in Windows to install boot camp and it says that the version on the DVD is only compatible with XP SP2 or Vista.................
Don't run the installer this time, if a window pops up to "Run" or "Open",  just open it. If it doesn't open the DVD and look for the BootCamp.exe. Right click on the .exe (or whatever it's called) and select the trouble shoot compatibility mode and select Vista. Yes, I know you have W7. See if that works.
It may have buggered the Mac OS side so you may have to get DiskWarrior (worked for some) or the like in order to fix it. It would definitely be useful in the future.

  • Having issues with installing Windows XP on Boot Camp

I installed the latest firmware for my MBP along with Boot Camp. I then tried to install a copy of Windows XP that I got from my friend (we'll name him Mr.Limewire). Anyways, I've tried to use 2 different copies of Windows XP and Boot Camp does not detect the cd still (it keeps saying to insert the Win xp cd). I believe I have using the full version of Windows XP. If a copy of XP is burnt on a Mac would that affect anything?

You really need to use a legitimate XP installation CD - a downloaded copy isn't worth the time for many reasons. Even if you did get it running, you can't register it and will have to reinstall a valid copy all over again to use it.
Also read the BootCamp FAQ's - XP must be a service pack 2 (SP2) release. If you don't see a folder "SP2" on the CD or some reference to it then you likely have a pre-SP2 release.
Another option is to slipstream SP2 and create an updated XP installation CD -
    http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxpsp2slipstream.asp
but even this would be waste of time without a valid XP install disc.

  • Cannot output audio via headphone jacks with Mac Mini (2012) and Boot Camp

    Hi all,
I have a brand new (2012) Mac Mini with a Boot Camp partition running Windows 7.  It's connected directly to an HDTV via HDMI cable.  I have external speakers hooked through the headphone jack on the back.  The speakers work fine if I'm in the Mac environment, but I cannot get the audio output to go through the headphone jack while in Boot Camp/Windows- it will only go through the speakers on the TV.  Any suggestions?  I think I've downloaded every driver I can think of, and the installation of Windows on the Boot Camp partition went well otherwise.  Thanks.
    John

Nevermind, I was missing one driver.  Installed it, fixed.

The Mac op sytem has Mountain Lion installed but the previous ower has his name and password attached to it and can only use as guest.
My question is how do I get around this to be administrator to reload software so i can use mountain Lion, and not loose the windows op .

If you reformat the partition that contain Mountain Lion and reinstall Mountain Lion, it should not effect the Windows pratition.
Have said that I suggest you backup everything you might want to save just in case.
