Time Machine backing up data FROM a NAS folder

Hi all,
Please forgive me if this topic is repeated, but I couldn't find any in the discussions. I have two computers in my home (one Mac and one PC/Win7). I am using now a Seagate Goflex Home NAS to keep photos, movies, documents, etc for the two computers to share. My iTunes library is already in the NAS (couldn't send iPhoto because it is a NTFS disk and iPhoto is a big multi-GB file).
Anyway, as my data will reside in this NAS (no documents in local HD either on Mac or PC), backup became a concern. I've been looking for ways to use my Mac Time Machine software to backup data FROM these NAS folders to another USB disk.
Do you guys know (if possible) how to make my Time Machine protects data FROM the NAS folders to another external USB disk?

No, Time Machine cannot back up from any network location.
I've not used it, but understand the [Chronosync|http://www.econtechnologies.com/pages/cs/chrono_overview.html] app ($40 U.S.) can do that.

The correct method of restoring photos from Time Machine is to restore the entire library.
The way that TM backs up files makes nearly impossible to go into the backup via the Finder and recover individual files. So you will have to restore a library that contains the photos you need being sure to select the option to keep both versions.
Then open the restored library and export those photos you need. Open your original library and import those photos. After that you can delete the recently restored library.

How do I copy old Time Machine back-up data onto my new (second) back up drive?

I recently bought a second back-up drive for use with my MacBook Pro (running 10.9.4).
I'm successfully backing up my computer to both drives on a regular basis using Time Machine. (a Seagate drive and a Western Digital drive respectively)
I was wondering if there's an easy way to add the old back-up files from the old drive to the new drive as well. That is to say, I wish I had all the data that precedes my new back-up drive on BOTH drives. There's plenty of space on the new drive.
Again, I'm already running Time Machine successfully to both drives, is it perhaps as easy as connecting both drives to my computer and copying the older dated back-up files over to the newer drive within the Backups.backupdb folder for my profile?

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
This technique will only work if the volume you're copying to is the same size, or larger than, the one you're copying from.
First, open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Options button. You may have to unlock the settings first by clicking the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Authenticate as an administrator.
Delete the volume you're going to copy from the list of backup destinations. Then turn Time Machine OFF.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased.
If the volume you're copying was encrypted by Time Machine, you may have to unlock it first. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar of the Disk Utility window.
Turn Time Machine back ON and select the new volume as a backup destination. You can also continue to use the old volume, if you wish. The two will be alternated when both are available.
CAUTION: If the volume you're copying is corrupt, as shown by Repair Disk or Verify Disk in Disk Utility, then that corruption will be copied to the new drive. Don't copy data from a corrupt volume on a malfunctioning drive. Put the drive aside and don't use it until you're sure you'll no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and take it to a recycling center. Do the same if the Restore operation fails with "disk errors."

I'm planning to add an external hard drive to my iMac to hold more data. I also plan to to use a larger external drive for Time Machine. Will Time Machine back up both the internal hard drive and the external data hard drive?

then the problem is not those external drives. As I said, I've never seen this particular error message.
Try using a different connection or a different port for your TM drive. If that doesn't help I'm afraid your options are very limited.
Unfortunately, TM is configured in such a way that when anything goes wrong, there is usually nothing a user can do short of reformatting the TM drive and starting backups anew. I'm very much afraid that's what you are looking at.
At least, I have no other advice to offer.

Time machine back up gone from desktop??

ive been backing up via time machine to a partitioned 500gb external drive for the past year without problem and this morning, the other part of the partition is showing on my desktop but the time machine back up portion is not... its not showing in finder either and im not able to back up... weirdly, if i try and eject the section of the drive i can see, i get a message saying its in use... restarting doesnt help...
any ideas??

i tried reformatting and after not too long it started happening again but now its not just the time machine partition but both partitions that are randomly ejecting themselves from the desktop... i then get an error message that they werent put away properly and the only way to get them back is to unplug the power cord from the external hard drive and when i plug it back in they reappear...
is my drive on the way out or can i save it somehow??

Using Time Machine to backup data FROM external disk to ANOTHER external

i have my itunes library and my iphoto library on an external WD disk connected to my MacBook Pro. So, i have a lot of nice data on that disk that i want protected... but Time Machine is not playing nice with the external hard drive. It's not listed on the list of items "Not to backup", yet when I go into the Time Machine interface, i can't go more than 1 level deep in Finder when selecting the external disk.
has anyone seen this behavior? it's supposed to work.

Did you backup your data from that external disk using some other backup software before?
I am also trying to figure out problems with external HD using time machine to back it up. Am not quite sure yet why it is not working right.

Will Time Machine Back Up Data on a Networked Time Capsule to an External HD?

Situation: I use my time capsule as a "network server". This is where all my files, music and movies are located. These files need to be backed up regularly. The Time Capsule is connected to my MacBook Pro via ethernet.
Question: Can I use Time Machine to back up my files on the networked time capsule to another external hardrive?
Goal: Data from TIME CAPSULE backed up to an EXTERNAL HD via time machine. I can have the external HD on the network or via USB to the Macbook Pro.
Any help is appreciated. I've been trying to do this off an on for a few years with no luck.

No, but ChronoSync can do this and I believe that Carbon Copy Cloner can now do this as well.

that's to make things easier. TM will back up any directly attached drive (internal or external) provided it's formatted MAC os extended. just connect the drive and remove it from TM exclusion list in TM system preferences->options.

Time Machine back up made from an external hard drive

Hi...to all
Last week i bought a Macbook. I pluged in my external hard drive Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus and it did a time machine backup on the Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus. The folder that was generated by the time machine on my external hard drive has the name backups.backupdb.
Then, i decided to return the Macbook and bought a Macbook Pro.
When I pluged the same external hard drive, Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus, although I am able to access and open individual files and folders, I am not able to copy neither any nor all the folders from my external hard drive to my new Macbook Pro. Moreover, I am able to access/open the files located in my external hard drive but when try to copy specific files from this drive to my Macbook Pro I get the following error message: Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error ocurred (Error code -50). Now, here is where it gets interesting: after 2 failed attempts to copy files from my external hard drive to my Macbook Pro desktop and receiving the above error message I am then able to copy the specific file (singular). This would mean that to copy the files and folders in the external hard drive i would need to do it on a one by one basis? If so, it would take forever...
Can someone please kindly help out.

When I tried using Migration Assistant it only gives me my internal hard drive as an option to restore to. The internal hard drive on my macbook isnt large enough to store the files.

If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive

How can I empty trash from outboard Time Machine back up hard drive?

Running a time machine back-up of a HD in target mode

Hi guys
Wondering if anyone can offer me some advice. My macbook pro won't start up and gets stuck in grey screen with apple logo. I have tried various troubleshooting tips as per apple support documents but cannot get it to start. Before I get to install and archive, and then maybe install and erase I wanted to update the time machine backups. I do try and keep on top of it regurlary and did a full time machine back-up end of August, however there are some things that were updated since then, which is why i want to run one now.
I can access the Macbook HD in target mode using my imac but am unsure how to proceed from here. Can I plug-in the external hard-drive which is used for time machine back ups into the imac and then run a full back up on the Macbook in target mode? If so, I'd be grateful if somebody could point me in the right direction of how to do this.
