Time Machine backup always says 19:22

Even if Time Machine is backing up every hour (which it is), when I look in Time Machine for the backups, they are all at 19:22 (24 hour clock) even if the items backed up are different. They used to say the time at different hours like 14:22, 15:22, 16:22 etc. Does anyone have this problem?

Thanks nerowolfe but I already thought of corrupted preference file and that isn't the problem since generating a new Time Machine preference file doesn't help.
Did you actually trash the original .plist and reboot?
Open TM preferences and turn it off. Then trash the plist and reboot.
Finally turn TM back up.
Also run DU on both your internal HD and the TM HD and repair them.

Time machine backups, always nearly 5GB when I use iPhoto
I back up my computer using Time Machine and it's turned on. I've realized, though, that during every backup, nearly 5GB is copied. Now I know that I don't download that much in a few weeks. I was wondering--is there a chance that Time Machine is copying something over and over...and over again. I notice that it does that when I use iPhoto, but the iPhoto Librtary size is 219 GB

    This solved my question
    Problem solved:
Close iPhoto. In the Finder window go to images and right click on the iPhoto Library file and press "Show Package Contents", then chose "Thumbnails" -> "Segments" and move these folowing 3 big files to the Trash:
    [thumb64segment.data]
[thumb32segment.data] - Sometimes this one is not there. Do not worry about it.
    [thumbJPGsegment.data]
Now restart iPhoto. You'll be given a message that it's rebuilding the thumbnail caches.
After this my Time Machine backup went normal again.

  • Time Machine backups always fail

    Hello,
I have been trying for a week to get time machine working with my time capsule and it just wont do the initial backup. It starts out fine but then after so many gigs have been tranferred (anywhere from 10 -20 of 70 total) it just fails. If I try to start it again it shows it going from 1kb to 10mb to 35mb at which point it always fails again. I have tried different suggestions from around the forum but none of them have worked. I have even tried to backup to a different external hard drive over usb and it still gives the same error. With the time capsule I have tried over wireless and ethernet with same results.
    please help

I am having the same issue. I just purchased a new iMac and transferred my data from my MacBookPro during initial startup. I'm guessing there is a file that Time Machine does not like. My plan is to reinitialize my iMac to factory and, instead of transferring data, I will re-install inidividual programs. Any suggestions to make this less painful would be helpful.
To initial poster: sorry I don't have an answer. Hopefully there is an answer out there for both of us. Thank you!

  • Time Machine backup drive says I have no access

I just did a clean install of Leopard and ran all the Software Update upgrades. I had backed up my MBP to a new Other World Computing Mercury On-the-Go drive. I've been using this drive for a week or so.
Anyway, the backup drive, named Mr. Backup, now has a padlock on it. When I try to open or eject the drive I get the message "The folder "Mr. Backup" could not be opened because you do not have sufficien t access privileges."
I've Googled up this message, saw what other people had successfully done to correct this, but those commands have not fixed my problem. I enter them, enter my password and am returned to my user prompt.
I desperately need to crack this open to retrieve all my files, info, etc.
    Thanks.

You can't use sudo if your account has no password; and so the command didn't work.
Running all the time in an admin account is a bad idea. A passwordless admin account is an even worse idea. Running all the time in a passwordless admin account is a very, very bad idea from a security standpoint.
I recommend making a new admin account with a password. Then change your original account to standard. You can leave the password off your regular account if you want to; a passwordless standard account is not nearly as big a security risk as a passwordless admin account. Best security practice is to use a non-admin account all the time, and to only log in to the admin account for tasks that really need it.
Once that is done, log in to the admin account, and try the Terminal command again, entering your new admin password.

  • Time Machine backup increases as it runs

I have a problem that it seems that many people have had but I have yet to find an answer, despite trying many of the things mentioned in these boards.
My time machine backups start saying that a resaonable ammount will be backed up (< 1GB) but always end up with over 30GB being backed up (out of a total of 40GB as I have excluded alot of files while I try to sort this).
    So far I have
Performed a full time machine reset
Deleted all time machine backups and started from scratch.
Tried time capsule, network and local drives.
So far nothing seems to resolve this.

I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    tmutil compare | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.

  • Time machine backup space after I open iPhoto

Hi, yesterday, after I had wrong delete some photo from my iphoto library, I have decided to restore entire iphoto library from Time machine backup.
I have select last backup and I select desktop destination folder for restored library. Then, i have delete original library and cut paste restore library from desktop.
I have backup all with time machine.
Now, when I open iphoto and close it without any changes, Time Machine backup always 450mb...
Is normal?? I have fixed permission and restore iphoto database.

    Vailfox wrote:
Ok, I have tried TimeTracker with these results:
    in iPhoto Library
    -> Database folder = 171MB
If you're really making no changes at all, not even browsing, I wouldn't expect much to be backed-up.
I don't have a current version of iPhoto avaiable at the moment, so can't check.  But with a fairly small iPhoto '09 library (just under 1 GB), it backs-up just under 1 MB after just opening and quitting.  It's no doubt making some minor changes to lock and unlock things, perhaps keep track of when things were lasted opened, etc. A lot of it appears to be metadata.
That likely explains the database changing -- if anything changes in any kind of file, including a database file, the whole thing gets backed-up next time.
    -> Thumbnails/Segments folder 181MB
The backup data regards only iPhoto.
    Should I regenerate iPhoto Thumbnails?
    Might be worth a try.
Stil, I wouldn't worry about this too much -- as Time Machine deletes all but the first backup of the day after 24 hours, the most space those backups will take is 400 MB/day.  And, after a month, they're further "thinned" to one per week.
Not really a lot in relation to a 32 GB iPhoto library.

  • I am trying to install Mavericks on my McbookAir, but it won't install, saying that my hd is used for time machine backups. I have an external HD connected to my mbAir that I'm using for time machine.

2012 Macbk air, with OSX 10.8.5. See my question above. Mavericks won't install on my Air's HD, says that both the HD - AND - the external HD (which has a different name from the laptop HD) are used for time machine backups. I've deleted my time machine plists, restarted, repaired permissions, turned time machine off, repeatedly selected the external drive in time machine preferences. HELP. (Install went perfectly on my desktop Mac, which also has an external HD for time machine).

I need to add that the only place I have the "Backups.backupdb" folder is on my backup external disk, and it's not on my HD    :-(    . If it were, I'd delete it!

  • Trying to rebuild my iphoto library from time machine backup and it still says 0 restored with a grey screen and the circle. How can i restore my library?

I just bought a new Macbook pro and i tried to rebuild my iphoto library from a time machine backup on an external hard drive. Even after pressing command+option when starting iphoto and selecting rebuild library from automatic backup, it still doesn't work with the grey screen with the white circle and a little window that says 'rebuilding library: 0 versions restored'. I also tried to make a copy of my iphoto library but that did not work either. how can i restore my iphoto library or at least gain access to my photos?

    Your question is not clear
Rerairing or rebuilding the iPhoto library never involves using Time Machine in any way
TM is a totally seperate program and you can "restore" a file (including the iPhoto library) from the past using TM - you launch TM and go back to the time you want and select the file (or folder or package) you want and click restore - it probably is best to keep the current one until you are sure everything is good

  • Error message when trying to install mavericks. It won't let me select a disk to install Mavericks on. Message says "This disk is used to Time Machine backups."  It is NOT used for back ups. help

When trying to chose a disk on which to install mavericks I get a message that says "this disk is used for Time Machine backups" and cannot be used.  Help!

I don't know what will help at this point. You should never update a system that has problems, unless you're absolutely sure that the problems are caused by a bug that is fixed in the update. With your backups in an uncertain state, you should not update or do anything else except start a new backup.

It would be much better if you had separate drives for the pictures and Time Machine backups.....but, if you want to use the same drive for both purposes, temporarily move the folder with the pictures to another location for safe storage.
Run the Time Machine backup on the hard drive and verify that everything is working correctly. Time Machine will format the disk for you in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as part of the backup process.
Then move the folder with the pictures back to the hard drive with the Time Machine backups.
When you have tested to make sure that everything is working again, then and only then should you delete the folder with pictures from the temporary storage area.
Again....it would be much better to keep Time Machine backups on a drive just for that purpose, and other data on another drive for that purpose. This is clearly one of those times when the fact that you can do something does not mean to imply that you should do it.

  • I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the b.u. stops

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.
