Time Machine backup cause kernel panic crash

I bought the new iMac and transferred everything from my old G4. Initially everything worked great, but now I get a kernel panic crash when time machine runs a routine backup. Any ideas?
I am connected to a LaCie External Drive using the Firewire port.

It's could be something wrong with the setup of the LaCie, especially if it's new. Double-check it, per #C1 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
If it's old, it may be something wrong with the LaCie itself. Start by trying to Repair your backups, per #A5 in the same Tip.
Also, does the LaCie have it's own power supply?
Are any other external disks connected and being backed-up?

  • Time machine backup causes system to crash

Hi, I had updates coming through on my macbook, and didn't realise until the next day that the power socket wasn't connected to my mac.  When I tried to use my mac I kept getting an error, in that the computer wouldn't run at all, wouldn't start up.
I tried to use a backup from my time machine but I wasn't able to do so and retain all my information on iphoto mail etc.
When I try and reinstall from time machine I still get the same problem.
Is there any fix that I can do that will allow me to access these backups and run them?
    Many thanks

I've been having problems over the last few days. It seems that it's stuck on 'Preparing Backup'. The menu bar icon shows activity all the time, but my last backup was over a day ago.
My system has been intermittently locking up as well. Sometimes it will unfreeze after a few minutes. Other times I'll have to power off using the power button. Not sure if this is related to Time Machine, but something's not right at the moment (maybe after the 10.5.4 update?)

  • Time Machine Backup causes system crash ...

After installing Mavericks my iMac 27" was very instable. Every now and then I noticed the spinning wheel and then step by step all functions were shutting down: 1. no menues, 2. no shortcuts, 3. no window change and so on. At the very end only swiping between desktops was possible. Tonight I just let him do hoping this will be fixed. I the morning I noticed the login screen, but without any function.
Actually I assume that the Time Machine Backup causes the problem! I switched it off about two hours ago and the system works perfectly until now.
I am using a TC 1. Gen. with Firmware Version 7.6.4 and Air-Port utility Version 6.3.2.
Routing and WIFI is both turned off on TC, I only use the TC for TM Backup and iPhoto/iTunes Media in a LAN.

Your problem is apparently caused by a third-party system modification. Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) if you haven't already done so. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Next, this command:
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
    ls -1 /Library/{InputManagers,StartupItems}
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.

  • Restore Time Machine backup after hard drive crash

My hard drive on the mac book crashed, so I replaced it.  Now I need to get my time machine back up on the new drive.  I've already started using the computer and reinstalled lion, so I'm not getting the original "backup" screen.  How do I find my old time machine backups?

Your best bet is to do a full restore from your backups.  See #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

  • Time Machine backup causes network connections to fail

We have a simple network with OS X Server (10.6.4) + a 10.6.4 Mac client and a Windows XP client. For some time we have been suffering sporadic drop outs of the network connection from the iMac OS X client to the server: the shared drives just disappear and you can't reconnect.
I have now narrowed this down to a problem with Time Machine. By logging on as a user on the OS X Server I was able to observe that the user session on the server suffered the same problem sometimes and this ONLY happens when Time Machine is running - I think its always when Time Machine is backing up the server.
Its an absolutely infuriating problem and very disruptive for our business. I am loath to switch off Time Machine on the server but don't know what else to do. Has anyone else experienced this problem or got any ideas?

Yep, Rikakiah, seems you are right, I am not alone! There are two other threads here which discuss the same issue:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11539266&#11539266
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11539227
From my testing it seems that the problem may be related to some interplay between Time Machine and LDAP - I say this because I can sometimes clear the problem and regain access to my shares by going into Workgroup Manager, removing the group assignments (which give access to the shares), saving the change, then adding the group assignments back.
This made me think that your solution should fix it, but unfortunately although I have excluded /var/db from Time Machine backups, I am still sporadically getting the problem.

  • Time Machine backups cause error message "Disk No Ejected Properly"

I have a 2011 iMac using OS X version 10.9.4.  I have had to change the external hard drive used with my Time Machine to get more storage.  Every time the Time Machine backs up (every hour), I get the message "Disk Not Ejected Properly"  Eject "FreeAgent GoFlex Drive" before disconnecting or turning it.
I am concerned about any damage that is happening because of this message.  I researched this on this forum and other users had a similar problem.  I tried 2 of the easier solutions: 1) make sure none of the boxes are checked in System Energy Saver (ie. put hard disks to sleep when possible, etc.)  and 2) buy and connect a USB hub that has it's own power supply to keep the external hard drive powered constantly.  Neither of these solutions has worked for me.  I still get the message.  So I have two questions.  First, is damage being done to my computer because it "thinks" that I did not properly eject the disc.  And, second, is there anything else I can do to stop this message besides not using the freeagent disc?

I had the same problem.  it turned out to be a cable issue.  Contact seagate for replacement cable.

  • Time machine cause kernel panic

I've updated to 10.6.4 yesterday, today when time machine running the kernel panic appear. what should i do... i'm very new to mac, i'm just upgraded from pc 3 days ago.

Hi, and welcome to the forums, and Macs.
Sorry for the unusual introduction to a kernel panic.
Turn Time Machine OFF via +System Preferences > Time Machine.+
Assuming Time Machine had been working before the update, something may have gone wrong with it. Try downloading and installing the 10.6.4 "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Snow Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

  • Using old Time Machine backup after clean install of system

I had a system crash on my G4 iBook running Leopard. Based on advice given at the Apple store genius bar, I reinstalled Leopard from an install DVD, reformatting the drive. During the system installation process I used my Time Machine backup to reinstall the former users (but nothing else). I then installed my needed applications. So far so good.
Now I'm in the situation where I have an external drive with the Time Machine backup of the pre-crash iBook, and I'm not sure how to proceed. Do I start over and do a new backup (effectively erasing all my pre-restore data)? Or can the old backup still be used, and added to? While losing the pre-restore time machine data would not be a major loss, it would be kind of nice to have.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!
    Dan

You didn't want any of your settings, preferences, data, etc.? The +MIgration Assistant+ app will let you do that, for one or more users. And of course, you can use the +Star Wars+ display to restore selected items.

Your next backup will be a full one; everything on your internal HD is considered as changed, so will be backed-up again.
If there's room for that, it will just be a large incremental backup, added to the existing ones.
If not, Time Machine will begin deleting your oldest backups, one by one, trying to make enough room for the new backup (the amount on the internal HD plus 20% for workspace). But it won't delete the latest backup -- if that's the only one left, and there still isn't enough room, the backup will fail.
If there is room, the first backup may appear to be very slow; why is not clear, but as long as it's making progress, let it run. Subsequent ones should be normal.

  • Time machine backups to external drive causing kernel panics

    Hi,
I am using an early 2011 MBP with a 1TB WD My Passport as a Time Machine backup disc.
Time Machine has been working fine until 2 days ago when I tried to perform its backup to disc.
It performed the usual backup but only up to 50MB of 2GB before it caused a KP.
Tried it using a different USB port with the same results.

  • Initial Time machine backup to Time capsule results in kernel panic

I recently purchased a Retina display MacBook Pro (running Lion at the time) and transferred the data from an external hard drive with my Time Machine backups from my previous MBP. I also bought a new Time Capsule.
The first time I tried to back up to the Time Capsule from the Retina MBP via an ethernet connection it got to 40GB of 140GB before it shut down from a kernel panic. Interestingly, the Time Machine backup was successful when I used the external hard drive I was previously using for my Time Machine backups (connected via USB).
I don't think there is an issue with the Time Capsule because Finder can locate the Time Capsule and I can copy and paste files from the Macintosh HD to the Time Capsule disk.
I've done the following steps in order to try and fix the problem:
    1. Repair permissions
    2. Verify and Repair Macintosh HD
    3. Updated the operating system to Mountain Lion (at which point I successfully completed a Time Machine backup to the external hard drive I was using for Time machine backups but was unable to backup to the Time Capsule without the computer crashing from a kernel panic)
    4. Used Airport Utility to erase the sparse disk image bundle that had been created on the Time Capsule then tried to back up via ethernet to the time capsule - kernel panic ensued at 40GB of 140GB
    5. Used Disk Utility to erase Macintosh HD and re-installed Mountain Lion. Transferred data from the external hard drive Time Machine backup from step 3.
    6. Erased the sparse disk image bundle on the Time Capsule again.
    7. Tried to backup to the Time Capsule again via Ethernet - kernel panic.
For each of the attemtps to back up to the Time Capsule I've used a different ethernet cable (Cat 5 and 5e) and plugged it into a different ethernet port on the Time Capsule each time. I've also tried using both Thunderbolt ports on the MBP (with an Ethernet to Thunderbolt adaptor).
I'm out of ideas on how to trouble shoot this problem and would greatly appreciate any ideas!!
If anyone knows how to read error logs, here's the readout from one of the kernic panics:

Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to your problem:
    LaCie drive software
    VirusBarrier
I suggest you uninstall them according to the developers' instructions, reboot, and see whether there's any improvement. If there is, you can experiment with putting them back, one at a time, to identify which one is at fault. "VirusBarrier" is harmful and should not be reinstalled in any case.
If there's no improvement after making the suggested changes, post again.

  • Time Machine causing Kernel Panics

    Hello,
A few days ago, I started to have kernel panics with Time Machine.  This seems to have started since I upgraded to OS X 10.10.2.
I can reliably reproduce the issue by doing the following:
Turn Time Machine "ON" in the system control panel and then force a backup.
Time Machine starts, says that it is preparing the backup, at some point the screen freezes and I get the grey screen of multilingual kernel panics.
I removed all kext extensions from the system, rebooted: no effect.  I also re-install MacOS X (through the recovery volume) same thing.  This also occurs in Safe Mode.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Stefan
Here what I get from the console messages at the time just before the kernel panic occurs:
2015-01-31 14:58:18,000 kernel[0]: hfs: mounted Copies de sauvegarde Time machine on device disk2s2

2015-01-31 15:00:04,000 kernel[0]: Security policy loaded: Safety net for Time Machine (TMSafetyNet)
And here is the panic report (I did not get a crash report)

  • Kernel Panic during Time Machine Backup

Hello everybody, two days ago I was doing a time machine backup, and I got the kernel panic message that suggested me to switch off the computer.
I did it, I restarted the computer and since then I cannot get the time machine backup to end without a kernel panic!
Side information: my HD of 250Gb has only 1gb left, OSX 10.6.6, everything updated,
I was listening itunes music during the backup.
    have to be a solution!
Down here one of the latest kernel panic log:

    Hi all
my Time Machine backups regularly result in kernel panics. I'm on a MBP 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and backing up to a Time Capsule. I removed the entire backup, erased the HDD in Airport Utility, and started from scratch backing up via Ethernet. No other applications are open.
I verified and repaired the internal HDD with Disk Utility (booting from the Mac OS X Install DVD). HDD appears to be ok. Repaired disk permissions. Ran Apple Hardware Test, all ok. Removed the Preference file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (as per #A4. suggestion). But after all this, I still get kernel panics only after about 2 or 3GB into the backup (of approx. 140GB data total).
The Time Machine widget that I installed reported this after the reboot after the last kernel panic:
    +Starting standard backup+
+Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://Marcus%[email protected]/Finger%20Lime%20HD+
    +Mounted network destination using URL: afp://Marcus%[email protected]/Finger%20Lime%20HD+
    +QUICKCHECK ONLY; FILESYSTEM CLEAN+
    +Disk image /Volumes/Finger Lime HD/cif-mbp-foth.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups+
    +Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb+
+Error parsing SystemMigration.log to determine source volume of system migration.+
    +No pre-backup thinning needed: 146.69 GB requested (including padding), 893.87 GB available+
+Waiting for index to be ready (101)+
These are the kernel panic reports I'm getting. I took out the HEX bits ("snip"). They all report as the possible cause: "unlocking an unlocked mutex or spinlock". Can anyone suggest any solutions to this problem? Thanks heaps!

  • Kernel Panic Immediately After Full Time Machine Backup

Hi, after I reinstalled my OS from a previous Time Machine backup, I've been getting a kernel panick:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff80005418bf): "Process 1 exec of /sbom/launchd failed. errno 88"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1699.32.7/bsd/kern/kern_exec.c:3546
    Here's my specs:
    - OS: Went from Leopard 10.5.8 to Lion 10.7.5. (Reinstalled OS X from default installation disc then reinstalled OS X from a 10.7.5 backup; Was having trouble booting with 10.5.8)
    - Hard Drive: 2008 Intel Core Duo
    - RAM: 4GB installed
Any ideas? I've already tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM. It occured right after I installed the Time Machine backup, when it tells you to restart your computer. I was having previous boot problems where my Mac just wouldn't boot, that's why I reverted to 10.5.8. That was working perfectly fine, until I restarted... Then the never ending gray startup screen popped up again.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    - Formatted my HD. Then did a clean install of mountain lion.
That's usually overkill.  Just installing a fresh version of Lion (or upgrading to Mountain Lion), without disturbing anything else, will fix 99% of problems with OSX.
    - Tried to restore my documents manually but got a lot of rights-issues,
The user account you set up wasn't recognized as being the same one as on the backups.  It's a slightly different cause, but see the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
    - Tried to restore my TM backup by booting from Mountain lion 10.8 bootable disk, trying to restore to 10.7.5.
Do you mean an InstallESD.dmg?  If so, that should work, but I don't recall if I've done it lately, and that may have updated your Recovery HD to the Mountain Lion version.  Do you have a Lion version you can use instead?  If you do, erase the whole disk (not just the OSX partition), then restore the Lion backup.
Does your Recovery HD work?  If so, that's the easiest -- just start up from it and do the Restore.
If not, and your Mac came with Lion, you should be able to erase the entire disk and use Internet Recovery to do the restore (or download and install a fresh copy of Lion), then use Setup Assistant to transfer your stuff.

  • Hard drive died with a kernel panic during time machine backup

after installing a new hard drive into my 13" macbook pro (mid-09), i used the time machine utility on the os x install disk to restore from my last backup. the restore went well and all my data was fine. however, after about 30 minutes of internet browsing, i got a random kernel panic and after rebooting the computer the new hard drive was no longer being recognized.
i have no idea what happened to the drive (it was brand new, just installed earlier today) but a major concern of mine is that time machine was trying to back up the computer when the kernel panic occured, so i had to reboot in the middle of taking a backup. could this possibly corrupt my time machine backups?
im really scared right now so any insight helps.
