Time machine backup crashes macbook pro

I have 500gb Time Capsule an every time I start a backup it goes for 5-10mins and then stops? I think? Any way the Macbook is dead Screen is black and you have to reboot it. Copying files to the time capsule works from both a PC and Mac so the drive is fine wifi is good every thing is connected.
It worked for the first couple of weeks, maybe its the macbook? Anybody got any clues?

2 user folders after time machine backup. Macbook Pro 13", Mac OS X 10.6.8

After a time machine backup my macbook pro runs fine, however the backup has created a 2nd user file. my new user file is now named like my old one, just with " 1" added. I have 2 user folders, can I delete the old one?
After a random check of the content in both user folders I found out that it's not identical. Some files that weren't backed up with the time machine before the re-setup are in the original folder, while the new uder folder obviously only backup what it could find on the time machine disc. (Time machine backed up my whole hdd about 2 days before the crash & re-setup)
Due to this situation my local HDD is almost full now. The original user folder has 205 GB, the new one user 1 has 210 GB, plus applications with a 500GB HDD, I now have only 44GB left.
Can I delete the old user folder?
Can I then re-name the new one (user 1) back to "user"?

I've never heard of a 'problem' as you're having - and I searched Pondoni's Time Machine Troubleshooting FAQs and couldn't fine anythig similar.
I would be wary of deleting anything manually from your TM backup - the sparsebundles are rather sensitive. If you like, however, you could always erase your TM backups and start anew... that's the only way I would know to 'fix' the problem.

Time Machine Backup from MacBook Pro...

So my Mac Pro is just gotten all crazy. I wanna start fresh, but I don't want to install all my software and preferences all over again. It would literally take me a whole day to install everything and get things up and running.
I have a time machine back up from my MacBook Pro that I just purchased. My Mac Pro was acting so crazy, I took it into a genius, and they replaced a bunch of hardware. But my preferences and things are just so weird that I just want to start over. And transferring things from my old admin account to a new one just adds even more annoying preference issues.
So I was wondering if using my MacBook Pro time machine back up would work. They'd both be on the same network, so I don't know if that would conflict and they couldn't be running at the same time or what. Can someone help me with this?

When you do a complete restore from a Time Machine backup, it will check that you are restoring to the original computer. There is some way of getting around it, but it may be simpler to reinstall OSX on your Mc Pro, then use Migration Assistant (Utilities Folder) to restore everything else from the Time Machine backup.

Continue Time Machine backup on MacBook Pro Retina

Yesterday evening I copied my Time Machine backup from my MacBook Pro to my MacBook Pro Retina. When this was done, the icon of Time Machine was gray. When I tried to make a Time Machine backup, it wasn't possible to continue with the (old) Time Machine backup; instead there was made a new (complete) backup (and I stopped that after a few seconds). I didn't get an opportunity to choose "inherit backup".
So my question: is it possible to continue a Time Machine backup of a (normal) MacBook Pro on a MacBook Pro Retina? (I don't need to use the backup on the normal MacBook Pro, but I want to be able to search in my old files using Time Machine, not via Finder and searching in the folders of the old Time Machine backup).

Time Machine backup with MacBook Pro 10.7.5 and Seagate Backup Plus Drive?

Anyone have any suggestions for a successful backup using Seagate Time Machine Backup Plus 1TB hard drive and 10.7.5 MacBook Pro?

Is it something like this? If so, then it's likely already formatted for use with OS X - "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Just connect the drive, make sure that it mounts, and turn on and setup Time Machine in System Preferences.
The first backup may take awhile, but hourly backups should be quick. Don't worry about keeping the drive plugged into your Mac all of the time - when your on battery Time Machine will make local snapshots on your internal. Just plug it up when you're ready.

First time machine backup from MacBook Pro 13" (early 2011) on time capsule is extremely slow - unusable!

I recently bought a Time Capsule 2TB.
First I set it up to create a new wifi network parallel to my existing wifi network. The first Time Machine backup on my MBP 13 connected via ethernet cable finished overnight (under 10 hrs for about 150 GB), as expected.
Then I found that my MBP was logging into my old network more often than to the time capsule network so that backups were not being made regularly. So I re-configured the Time Capsule to extend the exisitng network - all fine. Except that now Time Machine said it couldn't find the existing backup. After trying logging out and in, etc. I eventually deleted that sparsebundle to force Time Machine to start again new.
Now I get an estimated time of 2 - 3 days for the first backup - even via ethernet cable. Sometimes it hangs up and says something like 4000 days... I can't afford to hook my MBP up to the time capsule or even stay at home for this time to let it finish, and I know it should be faster than that!
I've tried a few of the tips I found so far in the forums, such as excluding my home folder from Spotlight, or even turning Spotlight off, but nothing has helped so far. Perhaps I missed some important step on the way.
Can anyone give me a reliable step by tep method to solve this problem. I don't want a geeky workaround, I want to plug in (o better, be in my wifi network) and make the backup work like Time Machine is supposed to do it. And I would like to keep on using Spotlight, too.

Unless you have a desktop Mac you can back up to over your network, your choices are:
Spend a bunch on a Time Capsule, kind of a waste if you already have a wireless router.
Spend $100 or so on an external HD and have some inconvenience until Iomega updates.
Risk losing all your data.
It's your call, but a no-brainer to me.
Better: get a portable external. Once you get the Iomega working, start making regular "clones" to the portable and take it off-site so you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, etc.

Time Machine Backup While MacBook Pro Is Asleep

Hey everyone thanks for looking at this post, well I bought a Macbook Pro yesterday (first time buying a mac) along with a 1TB Time Capsule. I started Time Machine and started up the initial back up which is about 21GB, I have a ethernet cable plugged in and Airport is on, will the backup stop if i close the screen or put the Mac into sleep mode??

yes, it will. if you close the screen the computer will go to sleep. this will stop everything including any TM activity. but you can wake the computer with an external mouse or an external keyboard without opening the lid and the TM backup will be resumed.

You don't get all files you need from Time Machine. Do a reinstallation and updates from you iWork disc or if you bought from AppStore install from AppStore but then you have to uninstall first.

Those look alot like file names and not infection names. I don't find any reference to anything like that on Norton or VirusTotal. Since you said these were Trojans, I would expect to see "Trojan" as part of the infection name.
".jar" files are executable Java applets. The random alpha-numerics would seem to indicate a cache file, likely from a browser with Java enabled. And we all know what ".zip" means.
Worst case is that you had Java enabled in a browser and were infected by one of the late variants of the Flashback Trojan over a year ago or one of a couple of other attacks using the same vulnerability but targetted against a small number of political sympathizers. Much more probable is that thes were Windows only Trojans. Hopefully you have a fully up-to-date OS X, including Java, and have disabled Java in all your browsers by now.

Time Machine on intel MacBook Pro: only backup from today is available

I use 500M TC for two computers - old iMac G5 on PowerPC and newer MacBook Pro on Intel. iMac works with Time Capsule pretty good, I can navigate between several dates with the arrows on Time Machine 'star' interface. But I can't do the same on my notebook. Every time i enter Time Machine the only choices available to navigate is TODAY and NOW. This does not mean that MacBook is not backing up. For example, I can reach old data on Time Capsule if go through 'Backup of MacBook Pro' from Finder's device tab on left toolbar. Simply from Finder windows I can open&save files which are on Time Capsule hard drive. But can't do the same on Time Capsule nice interface.
Appreciate for the help of the community in solving a problem.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
It sounds like TM has started a new "sequence" of backups, as if you'd gotten a new Mac.
To see these "other" backups, you may need the (badly named) +Browse Other Time Machine Disks+ option. It's available by holding down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar, or by control-clicking (right-clicking) the TM icon in your Dock.
You'll see a selection screen showing all the disks/partitions that have TM backups on them. Select the one you want, and you'll be taken to the normal TM "Star Wars" interface, where you should see all the backups on that disk/partition.
You may have to manually mount the sparse image for your MacBook (there may be two of them) to get this to work.

Lion's Time Machine backup crashes Mountain Lion

I have a OS X Lion's Time Machine backup with a few user accounts. Now I need to restore one user account and its data to a MacBook Pro with a replaced hard drive installed with OS X Lion and nothing else. I was told by Apple guys to:
1) upgrade to Mountain Lion first;
2) connect the OS X Lion Time Machine backup, then run the Migration Assistant (Mountain Lion).
The first time I did it, I migrated everything to the MacBook Pro. Then the user accounts and home folders all mixed up. The Lion's applications replaced Mountain Lion's applications of the same names, so and so... Problems gradually surface in two days, that I spent. The Mountain Lion crashed and the MacBook Pro had to reinstall the OS X Lion, then repeat 1) and 2) above.
The second time I did it, I told Apple of my experience, and they told me to uncheck everything else except the user account I wanted to migrate. Then after doing 1) above, and at 2) above, I found that nothing could be unchecked. I told Apple, and they told me to go ahead. After migrated everything, including Applications and the user accounts and data, The Mountain Lion crashed in many native applications, again. (Long story cuts short!)
Now, the thrid time, after wasting my week's time. Apple still tells me to upgrade to Mountain Lion before recovering the user from the TM backup drive. And I have again spent 6 hours in such things as wiping out everything (I guess Apple used Disk Utility to create 1-partition, quickest), install OS X Lion, and I installed Mountain Lion (less than 2 hours inlcuding download and install), then manually "copy" the one user account needed from the last completed (not the "Latest" and not the one with .InProgress) Time Machine dated backup/Machintosh HD/Users to the new INTERNAL Machintosh HD/Users. (The current logged-on account is "test" which is different from the one I need to migrate.)
What next? I shall create a new user account and assign the migrated user as the home folder of the new user account. Does it work? I don't know.
Why not simply restore the user account and data from OS X Lion's Migration Assistant, then upgrade to Mountain Lion? Why?
What about other applications? (e.g. Microsoft Office for Mac 2011), native iPhoto, iTunes....?)
Scenario: If my Time Machine backup was started a year or 2 years ago from Snow Leopard or Lion, and all the way to Mountain Lion. Then one day the drive crashes. Can Time Machine / Migration Assistant give me a one-click-done restoration? Or I need to go through this teasing process again?
Is Time Machine serving its purpose? (Who's purpose? Increase Apple's sales? or Recovering everything for the Mac user with a crashed drive?)

Try the following:
Restore Lion to your HDD. During setup, use setup-assistant to restore your data from TM-Backup.
When this is done upgrade to ML.

Using TIme Machine on a MacBook Pro with an AFP connected External HD

I have successfully been able to setup my MacBook Pro to use TM to an external drive connected to my MacPro - however there are some interesting limitations/observations/
To make this configuration work - I had to go into the sharing system preferences and select file sharing and then add that external drive to my shared folders list.
Now if I have shut down my laptop and then come back home and plug it back into the network via Ethernet - TM will try to run the backup job at its next scheduled time but will fail! What I have to do to make it work is to open a finder window - click on my shared MacPro desktop which then pulls up all of the folders that are shared including the external TM hard drive (by the way), but it will still not be enabled via the system preference. This is especially odd since within the title bar of that finder window - it clearly states that I am connected to this computer as "William Harris" What I then have to do is double click on the folder that represents that external HD and as soon as I do that - the system preference shows the name of the external HD in bold (no longer grayed out) and the TM backup starts immediately!!! This will then continue to work without my intervention until I shut the laptop down again.
So - the fact that I must manually "re-connect" the connected AFP share point before TM will start to work again IMHO is a bug!
Anyone else seeing this function working differently?

I don't use one, but many folks use Synology NASs with Time Machine. However, a number of 3rd-party NASs need to be updated to work witih Lion, so check with Synology to be sure your model is compatible and/or has the latest updates.
It can be a bit tricky setting them up, however, as part of it must be done on the NAS, with the NAS's software, so follow Synology's instructions very carefully.
