Time machine backup disappeared after upgrading OS from Lion to Mountain Lion.

I made a full backup of my 2011 Macbook Pro to my network drive through Time Machine in order to upgrade to Mountain Lion. However, after the upgrade, the backup could not be found. As it went through the install, I opted to recover the backup afterwards as I have read that you can do that after the upgrade. But the migration assistant could not find a backup.
So I looked in Finder at my external drive, and sure enough the backup is gone.
Some extra info:
So I don't know if this has affected anything important, I'm not that computer smart.
Prior to this I've been trying to get Windows 7 to work on bootcamp (still not working). I needed the OS X install disc, but I didn't have the install disc(I had OS Lion installed) and I bought the laptop from someone at work, so I couldn't get the Lion iso pulled from the recovery to a flash drive (it required the previous owners password to his apple account). Therefore I purchased the Mountain Lion Upgrade (Lion being no longer available. I didn't really want mountain lion). So when I started the Mountain Lion install, I had the "brilliant" idea to install it on the flash drive I had intended to use in the first place. Well, I didn't think it was gonna start the upgrade immediately after that. Anyways, after I realised my mistake I redid the install, process was the same, chose the main HD, went well. This was where I opted out of the recover-from-backup option. At this point I tried to restore my backup through the migration assistant. It said there was not enough room on the hard drive. I then noticed that all the memory used up prior upgrading was still in use, but under the old main user. I didn't do much with it, and thinking that my backup had my back, I did a full clean install. Another mistake. After the clean install, the migration assistant said there was no backup. I looked in finder, it was gone.
I didn't touch the hard drive thinking it is either hidden, or deleted but not written over yet and still could be recovered. I don't know how to explore these options, I can't find anything online about either. Or perhaps there are other options to consider?
Please advise.

It's early 2011.
I have been able to purchase the upgrade under my username at the upgrade price. I didn't know that Lion stays under the previous owner's Apple account. I mean I got that when I tried putting the Lion Iso on a bootable drive (for the purpose of bootcamp) it said I needed the username and password of the Lion purchaser, but I went to get my own license then, but it was Mountain Lion at the upgrade price. I didn't think it had anything to do with my backup.
So looking back, that seems like a warning Apple should have put out for people to be wary of. "Hey, don't buy a laptop from someone and then upgrade, you'll lose everything." That's a load of crap. I thought I had no worries as long as I had a backup. I've never needed a backup, then the one time I thought I was in good hands. Nope, I try to do something, and it takes everything from me. That was a lot of data worth of stuff. 550 Gigs! I was shocked and in complete disbelief the moment I realized what I had done.
I just don't want to give this up.

  • HT3275 Continue using Time Machine backup history after switching disk from local to Airport Extreme?

I have been using Time Machine on my iMac for backups for quite some time. The disk I've been using is a single disk connected via USB. Now that I got an AirPort Extreme base station, I wanted to switch the disk drive to the AirPort Extreme, but continue to use my existing backup history and not start a new one.
When I did that, Time Machine complaint that the disk does not have enough space left to do the initial backup. Again, I don't want to start a new backup history but rather seamlessly append to and continue with my existing backup history that's already on the disk.
    Is this possible and how?
    Thanks,
    Torsten

As the other poster says, that's usually unreliable and not supported by Apple. See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.
When I did that, Time Machine complaint that the disk does not have enough space left to do the initial backup.
That's because Time Machine stores backups differently when they're done over a network.  See the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 for an explanation.

  • Time Machine backup crashes my MBP since I've installed Mountain Lion

    Hello,
I've got a MBP (1.5 years old) and do my back-ups on Time Capsule. Recently I upgraded to Mountain Lion and since then I've come accross some back-up issues:
    1. I've got the error message containing the "sparsebundle already in use" wording
    2. I followed the procedure of unticking (+ reboot) and ticking (+reboot) the "share files" box in the Airport Utility -> Disk section
    3. When I want to launch the backup after that, it always takes about 2 minutes before my MBP crashes and restarts.
Has anyone an idea on what goes wrong or what I would have to modifiy in the settings?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    caraval
PS: another MBP connected to the same TC but still running on Lion performs its backups without problem

    Hi Clinton,
I tried it again (manual launch of backup) and it crashed again.
In the console there's one type of message coming up repeteadly:
9/19/12 8:50:04.508 PM PhotoStreamAgent[203]: [3] MSPublisher - 145909544 Encountered temporary network issues during upload. Will try again later...
Please let me know if you wish the whole bunch of logs (which is taking up a lot of place, don't know what would be the best way to attach it)
Besides, hereafter the error report which is being sent to APPLE. I appreciate your help on that matter.
    Regards,
    Andreas

  • Time Machine Backup fails after Restore

Had my 500GB HD on my iMac fail. After being replaced by Apple, I performed a restore from 1TB time machine backup. After this was done, I set time machine back up to back up to this 1TB drive. I want it to append to the previous backups. However, the backup fails due to "backup is too large for the backup volume". It doesn't seem to want to append to previous backups but thinks this is an entirely new backup, which I guess is mostly true. I suspect this has to do with UUIDs of the new and old drives, but I'm not sure how to correct it (I'd prefer not to just wipe the backup disk and start over). I migrated backups before from one extenal HD to another but can't remember what I did... If anyone has steps to fix this, let me know em. Thanks.
    Here's the time machine log:
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/MyBook-Mac/Backups.backupdb
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
    Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|
Starting pre-backup thinning: 506.55 GB requested (including padding), 502.31 GB available
No expired backups exist - deleting oldest backups to make room
Error: backup disk is full - all 0 possible backups were removed, but space is still needed.
Backup Failed: unable to free 506.55 GB needed space
Backup failed with error: Not enough available disk space on the target volume.

yes, that's correct. TM will make a full backup after a full system restore on a new hard drive because the UUIDs of the new drive is different from the old one.
you may try the following hack to get around it
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090213071015789
But I make no promises about how well it works.

It's not clear whether you were able to do any backups to this drive at all.  If not, it's probably not formatted properly.  See #5 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for instructions.
If you did get any successful backups, there may be a problem with the drive, or the backups may be corrupted.  Try to repair the backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Second Time Machine backup wiped after Yosemite install

Following on from my initial thread a few weeks ago (https://discussions.apple.com/activity?streamSource=connections&streamID=1989606) regarding the disappearance of my Time Machine backups from my iMac after installing Yosemite (7 people reporting a similar experience) and having noticed that the data seems to be 'hidden' on the backup drive, my partner upgraded her macbookpro and wow... lo and behold, the exact same damned 'glitch'.
Having not connected the external to the laptop for a few weeks after upgrading (yeah, yeah, I know) the reminder said something like "Time Machine has not completed a backup since 5th January" so we attached the external only to be given the error that the external didn't have enough room to backup the data and that the last successful backup was sometime in September 2014.

This is disappointing. Like seriously (insert swearword here) disappointing. No one has any idea what the glitch might be? Two different machines experience the exact same issue with Time Machine after upgrading is more than a coincidence in all my years of Apple fanboy-ism.
I am annoyed. Just letting folks know that

  • Time Machine backup disappears when iMac sleeps

Tried finding this topic but could not find the specifics. I have an Intel iMac running 10.6.7 and I use a Mercury enclosure with a Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATA for Time Machine backup, connected with FireWire. Every time my Mac goes to sleep overnight, the next morning, the Time Machine icon disappears from the desktop. It's been disconnected, because when I run Check Time Machine, the log reads thusly:
<<Thu Apr 21 10:29:30 com.apple.backupd-auto Not starting scheduled Time Machine backup - time machine destination not resolvable.
Thu Apr 21 12:30:05 [0x0-0x2d22d2].backupd-helper Not starting Time Machine backup after wake - failed to resolve alias to backup volume
    >>
Occasionally I'll get the error message on the Mac that a device has been "improperly disconnected" but most of the time when it sleeps the TM drive icon just goes away (even tho the backup drive is still on).
Any ideas? Can I fix this or have to live with it? Are there alternatives to TM that may work better?
    Thanks for any help/suggestions.
    Best,
    Mike

I had the same problem as Bru-Hed, but with a Samsung G3 Station 1 TB with USB-connection. After waking up the MAC the message "improperly disconnected" appeared. Was happy with the solution you gave and changed the power save settings accordingly, the drive holds its power, but....... things did not change. Switching off the MAC and restarting gives no problems with the back-up drive, but after waking up I have to reinstall the back-up drive every time by disconnecting and connecting the USB-connector. After choosing the drive again in Time Machine, everything works properly until the next time the MAC goes asleep......
Any other solution to this problem ?

  • Time Machine quit working after Upgrade to 10.9.2

Time Machine quit working after I downloaded and installed the latest security upgrade 10.9.2. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure this is what you want. There are a lot of repeated, multi-line patterns that I left in simply because I really don't know what I'm doing.  My apologies if there is too much irrelevant information. Also, the logs did not go all the way back to when the problem started.

  • Time machine backups disappear Yosemite

Since upgrading (that is a joke) from ML to Yosemite I am seeing backups on time machine disappear from my back up drive. Another oddity is that the icon does not spin around while backing up. Any help would be appreciated.

The Time Machine icon stopped spinning when Mavericks was released in the Fall of 2013.  Instead, since that time, there is a bit more of a separation in the lower left area of the circle (near the arrowhead) when the backup is occurring.  Further, the arrow turns into a double arrow.
Backups may well disappear as the disk housing the Time Machine backups becomes full.

  • Time Machine backups disappear

Hi - All my Time Machine backups (3 months worth) have disappeared from my LaCie Quadra Hard Drive after my last Time Machine backup. Either at the end or during the backup, I got an error message saying "Bitmap Mismatch". Any suggestions? Thanks, Bernie

    Hamish Morrison wrote:
Well yes in principal I'm sure you're right about the drive capacity but I don't believe its a space, or lack thereof problem. I can't say that there was any unusually large backup that occurred that might cause it to wipe off the older backups.
I have done verification on both source & target drives. No issues found. Same with Techtool.
Yes, I also run Superduper every day to an external drive so at least all is not lost when TM fails. All drives are permanently attached & the Mac runs 24/7.
I also run the TM Buddy widget, but it only records info so far back and the challenge is being aware that you have lost the backup when you don't check it every day. By the time I notice the problem the info that might help diagnose the problem is gone!
I understand but it's really impossible to say now what might have caused it without seeing log info. file system errors are one possible reason but you say all drives check out fine. anything else would be unverifiable speculation at this point. once thing i've noticed in the past that any kind of problems with superduper backups can cause this. so if you ever get any issue with superduper check what's happening with TM.

  • Time Machine not working after upgrading to Lion

I have a Time Machine 1.2 which worked perfectly on my old iMac OSX.  A few months ago I purchased a new iMac which came with Snow Leopard, and it worked well.  But when Apple came to upgrade me to Lion, the Time Machine no longer works.   Is it not compatible with Lion??
At one stage I was told there was no room on the disk.  I then tried to delete most of the previous backups, leaving only a handful of backups - but still no luck.  I think I might have messed up things by then trying to edit the "do not back up" list. I tried to exclude some programmes applications , and now I am told there are no disks available to be backed up.
It is not very clear on the "options" screen, what one should do. What does the + and - indicate, and is it necessary to remove any files at all if I want a simple regular backup procedure on my home computer.
Lastly - if I wanted to uninstall and reinstall the Time Machine - is there a procedure?? I can't find one.
I hope someone can put me right.

I was brave and did what you said. (Thanks for being patient - I am an old lady).
I erased the external drive (called Time Machine Backups) in the diskutility.app.
Now - when I restarted Time Machine I am still told that there are no disks available to be backed up, and that this can happen if all disks are in the “Do not back up” list.
So maybe I really did mess up the list of items to be excluded from backups?
How do I restore the list now to what it should be?

  • Time machine stopped working after upgrading to lion

After upgrading to lion my time machine has not been able to back up. It takes a long time preparing and trying to back up and then stops with an error (without an error message being shown to the user). The status is delayed and it claims that the backup disk cannot be found (Im using a time capsule).

    A

I finally figured out what was the problem. The disk utility tool found an error in the backup disk and fixed it. I guess some error occurred while the upgrade to Lion was on the way.

  • Time Machine backup files ... going from SL to ML.

I've done a clean install of ML from SL on my MacBook Pro.
Under SL, Time Machine backed to portable HDD. All these backups are still visible and date back to early 2012. That is, if I "Enter Time Machine" I can browse all the backups upto early 2012.
So far, I have not done a backup. What happens when I run Time Machine for the first time (assuming I keep it pointed it to the earlier backup file on the portable HDD)?
Will it delete the older backups/data? Or will it just continue adding Time Machine backups to the existing ones? I have a feeling that there will be some files from these backups that I would like to use in future, but not sure right now. In the mean time, I want to run Time Machine and would love it if new backups just added to the earlier ones.
    Cheers,
    Mark.

That means the disk is treated as a different one, at least temporarily.
Your best bet was to use Setup Assistant when your Mac first started up after installing Mountain Lion, to transfer your apps, settings, user accounts and data from your backups.
It sounds like you skipped that, and created a new user account.  That's going to be a problem.  Your best bet now is to use one of the workarounds, probably #4, in the green box of Problems after using Migration Assistant.
If you do, the erased drive should be "associated" with the old backups -- the backups are actually changed to make it look like the backups were done from it.  Then they'll all appear in the same timeline.
If not, the new installation will be treated as a separate HD, that's no longer connected.  You can see and restore from them via the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  However, the user account you created probably won't have permission to the old backups.  The pink box in the fist link above explains why.  Thus the need for the workaround.

  • Why is my time machine backup to large to install from?

I'm trying to setup my new MacBook from a time machine backup of my old IMac. My backup file is 250gb and there is over 400gb of space on the hard drive but it keeps coming up with a message saying there is not enough space to do the install.
I've had to leave my IMac at home interstate and need my iBook setup the same - unfortunately doing another backup with only the essential files and configurations is not an option. The situation seems strange though - is there another way?

I need help with TM, too, as it tries to do a full backup after I restored my Macintosh HD from TM as suggested by Disk Utility.
If you're on Snow Leopard or Lion, and did a full system restore by starting from the Recovery HD (Lion) or your Install disc (Snow Leopard), Time Machine should have figured it out and done an incremental backup.
If it didn't, and you're on Lion, and your backups are on a local disk (ie, not on a network), you may be able to tell TM to "associate" the restored disk with the backups manually, per #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.  That usually works, but not always.
If you're not on Lion, or your backups are on a network, there's no way to force it.

  • Time machine backup space after I open iPhoto

Hi, yesterday, after I had wrong delete some photo from my iphoto library, I have decided to restore entire iphoto library from Time machine backup.
I have select last backup and I select desktop destination folder for restored library. Then, i have delete original library and cut paste restore library from desktop.
I have backup all with time machine.
Now, when I open iphoto and close it without any changes, Time Machine backup always 450mb...
Is normal?? I have fixed permission and restore iphoto database.

Ok, I have tried TimeTracker with these results:
    in iPhoto Library
    -> Database folder = 171MB
If you're really making no changes at all, not even browsing, I wouldn't expect much to be backed-up.
I don't have a current version of iPhoto avaiable at the moment, so can't check.  But with a fairly small iPhoto '09 library (just under 1 GB), it backs-up just under 1 MB after just opening and quitting.  It's no doubt making some minor changes to lock and unlock things, perhaps keep track of when things were lasted opened, etc. A lot of it appears to be metadata.
That likely explains the database changing -- if anything changes in any kind of file, including a database file, the whole thing gets backed-up next time.
    -> Thumbnails/Segments folder 181MB
The backup data regards only iPhoto.
    Should I regenerate iPhoto Thumbnails?
    Might be worth a try.
Stil, I wouldn't worry about this too much -- as Time Machine deletes all but the first backup of the day after 24 hours, the most space those backups will take is 400 MB/day.  And, after a month, they're further "thinned" to one per week.
Not really a lot in relation to a 32 GB iPhoto library.
