Time Machine backup - doesn't store masters? Help!

My Aperture library was exhibiting problems, and so I attempted to restore it from a Time Machine backup (presuming (it would seem incorrectly) that restoring the Aperture Library.aplibrary would bring everything back to how it was two weeks prior. That was my experience with iPhoto. I hit restore and then because there were two .aplibrary files, 'replace' and let it go.
However, now it seems all I have left are the preview images, no thumbnails nor the much larger masters. The masters were stored within the library (the default setting).
I've done a lot of searching, and read that Time Machine stores incremental backups for Aperture - so is there a way to collate all those incremental backups to get a full Aperture library restore? Someone mentioned a 'slow backup restore' but I can't find anything on this. The original library file was several gigabytes, but each of these restored library files is only around 200mb.
Any help would be extremely appreciated - would love to get the masters back. If Time Machine has only stored a database and not the masters contained within the library, then how can Apple call it a backup solution? Surely one of the most important things for it to back up IS someones photos!

Aperture is on 3.1.2. It was soon after updating Aperture (tho not immediately), that the Browser behaved strangely, with the photos going in one row off to the right, yet with no scroll bar at the bottom. I'd been used to using iPhoto, and thought that the Time Machine backup would be a non-issue and just revert it back to before I updated, avoiding this bug (this: http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11737525). Seems to have solved that problem (I also trashed the preferences file), but instead all the photos are just grey empty boxes. I'd also kept my iPhoto and Aperture libraries completely separate - iPhoto for point and shoot + phone, Aperture for DSLR.
What version of Aperture did you upgrade from? What version of Aperture is the library in TM? What is the size and type of the external drive? How is it formatted?
With regard to the backup, I've had Aperture since September 2010, so my computer has completed many backups with the program closed. The furthest back I can go is to November 2010.
So even if you go back to the TM BU of November 2010 the masters are missing from the Aperture library?

  • Unable to restore from Time Machine after an erase and reinstall - MacbookPro cannot access my old Time Machine backup volume. Desperate for help please?

My MacbookPro would not move past the Apple logo and spinning wheel for a number of hours.  After trying the numerous suggestions to solve the issue I eventually opted to erase and reinstall feeling confident my Time Machine backups would come to the rescue.  After a successful erase and reinstall I tried to restore all my data from my TIme Capsule using Command-R during start up and by using the Migration Assistant.  Neither worked and I have received messages to the effect that the backup volumes on my Time Capsule cannot be access because I have entered a wrong password or because the backup volume is damaged.
When I open my Time Capsule in Finder and click on my sparsebundle I get an eror message saying that the disk image could not be opened and that the resource is temporarily unavailable.
Desperate for some help and comfort that many years of personal data have not been lost.
    Thank you.

  • Cannot install mountain lion keep getting "This disk is used for Time Machine backups" when trying to install, HELP!!!

Ok i currently have Lion on my early 2011 15" MBP. When i try to install Mountain Lion to my mac HD it keeps telling me I cannot because its used for time machine backups. I have done a search and I know I have to delete the backups.backupdb folder but I cannot find it for the life of me. If anyone can help I would really appreciate, thanks!
    Nik

If you double-click on your hard drive icon the Backups.backupd folder should be on the root level of your drive. Sometimes OS X gets confused and incorrectly puts a Backups.backupd folder on your hard drive. That folder should only appear on a drive used for Time Machine
If you can't find the Backups.backupd folder try using the free EasyFind with both Package Contents and Invisible Files & Folders checked. Search for "Backups.backupd" without the quotes on your hard drive (default selection), not your Time Machine drive. Right-click on the search result and choose to Reveal in Finder. Click on the link that kisuke3 provided and follow those directions
If you can't find a Backups.backupd folder anywhere try booting into Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key right after you hear the startup chime. Keep holding the Shift key down until you see the Apple Logo. The progress bar that appears indicates the progress of the file check that Safe Mode automatically does. Give it time to finish.
Reboot normally and see if the ML installer will work. If it does wait until Spotlight is finishing indexing before turning Time Machine back on.

  • Time Machine Backup doesn't delete older backups

Time machine preferences doesn't allow much of modifications as to how frequently should it backup the data etc.. Is there any way where I can specify the intervals between two successive backups and thus limit the backup size, coz I think I'll need

I have the same problem. My computer name did include invalid characters but changing the name to fix that did not solve the problem. I recently had the logic board replaced (for the 2nd time in 3 yrs but that's another issue) and wondered if there is something related to that. I've had to reset a few things and reauthorize iTunes, is there a similar process for Tine Machine to make it see my previous backups? I guess I can reformat and start over but I'd really like to avoid that since I have almost 4 months of backups and am not sure what might get missed if I do that. Any advice would be much appreciated!

  • Restore from Time Machine backup doesn't install working system folder

A routine restart turned into a major problem this morning. I'm runnning 10.8.5. on a MacPro tower and a 480GB SSD for a boot disc. Been running fine for the past 2 years.
I restarted the machine and when I came back to it I was dropped into the Recovery / OSX Utilities screen. This was unexepected!
Tired restarting again, and it gave me the circle+line through icon ( / ) a couple of times and then the apple as it apparently located the Recovery partition.
Running Disk Utiliites "Repair" and "Repair Permisions" on the SSD came back with flying colors, so I assume it's not a hardware issue. That said, multiple reboots and nothing. I was basically dead in the water. I only have a boot USD stick, which just launches you into recovery mode.
Knowing that I was going to be out for a few hours and that I have regular Time Machine backups of my drive, I opted to perform a System Restore on the main SSD, using a backup from earlier this morning.
After 4+ hrs of "restoring", I optomistically rebooted the machine. It's still gave me the "system folder not found" icon, and booted into Recovery mode.
This time I quit the application and specifcially went to select the SSD as a Startup Disk and it's not even showing a 10.8.5 folder on the SSD!!
I just booted up my Mac Pro in target disk mode and plugged it into my MacBook Pro to examine the drives. I can see all 4 drives on my MacPro, including the boot SSD. My boot disk appears to contain all the files it had before, but won't boot! I can verify that the backups are the exact folder structure that I had before, so what's going on?
    Should I:
Wipe the SSD again, and install OS X from my laptop? Can I do that through Target Disk mode? Or just do that through the Recover Tool?
Some people with similar issues were told to perform clean installs and use migration assistant to pull the files over. But I really would like to know why using Time Machine backups aren't doing what they are supposed to – the files are all there!
Is there something I can do to my restored SS
Obviously this is a desperate time for me, so any assistance is greatly appreciated.

So far, the closest to a solution has been that I've since reformatted the drive. Installed a fresh copy of 10.8, and now I'm trying to migrate over all my content from the Time Machine backup using the Migration Assistant. In an hour I'll find out if I just wasted the last 2 hrs.
I guess I have a "Quad Core", I have two many machines to keep all the specs straight. I've been using it for over two years. It's not an OS issue.
I'm still blowaway by the fact that I could actually just restore from a Time Machine backup. When connecting to the TM via the system utils, it should be handled like a byte-for-byte clone. I think that's a rather major failure on Apple's part, but not the last one of late.
I still am not confident enough in Mavericks to take that plunge.

  • Time Machine backup disk full... help

This happened sooner than I thought it would.  I would like to copy my existing–but full–Time Machine backup to my new 2 TB external disk and be able to continue using it from where I left off.
I recall a discussion about this a couple of months ago, but with this new (and I think, stupid) discussion board format, I've no idea where it is.
    All suggestions are appreciated!

    Here you go,
Mac OS X v10.6: How to transfer your backups from your current hard drive to a new hard drive
If you upgrade to a new hard drive with a larger capacity, you may want to transfer your existing Time Machine backups to it before using it for regular backups.  To keep your existing backups on your new, larger backup hard drive, follow these steps:
    Connect your new hard drive.
In Disk Utility, make sure it has a GUID partition and is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  If needed, reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended with a GUID partition. If you do not know how, see the steps in this article.  Note: Back up any data on the hard drive before you format it.
Select the new drive's icon on the desktop and choose Get Info from the File menu.
Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" is not enabled.
Open Time Machine preferences in System Preferences.
Slide the Time Machine switch to Off.
In Finder, double-click the current backup hard drive to open its Finder window.
Drag the folder "Backups.backupdb" to the new hard drive.
Enter an administrator user name and password, then click OK to start the copying process.  This may take some time to complete because all your backups will be copied.
In Time Machine System Preferences click "Select Disk…"
Select your new hard drive, then click "Use for Backup."
Now, on your new hard drive, you will have all of your existing backups from the previous backup hard drive plus have more room for more new backups.

  • Time Machine backup doesn't recognize recent changes 100%

I have an iMac and 2 external hard drives ("A" and "Time Machine" for purposes of this post).
I just updated my iMac and also A before running a manual Time Machine backup to "Time Machine".
What gets backed up via the Time Machine software to the physical hard drive "Time Machine" is my entire iMac and A. Nothing is excluded.
After the manual backup completed I opened my Time Machine hard drive icon and opened the folder "Latest" to review the new backup. I noticed a problem right away with the date/time stamps. When I open Latest I see 2 folders, A and iMac. The A folder is the problem in that I just put new files on A moments before I ran a manual backup however Time Machine is saying A hasn't been modified for the last month. The iMac folder date/time stamp however indicates that I just made changes to my iMac (which I did) pre-back up. And yes, I reviewed A to see that there are indeed new files there with today's date/time stamp info.
    Thoughts?

First, do not access your backups via the Finder; use the Time Machine "Star Wars" display.
If that shows nothing on drive "A" has been backed up for a while, see #D5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting

Well, I dislike TM myself, never use it due to all it's quirks, & even IF it appears to work, when it comes time to use it/relly on it, you may find more quirks or nearly impossible to use.

  • "Time Machine Keeps" doesn't make sense - help.

I'm new to Mac.  So forgive me if this is something I'm just way over thinking, but I like to understand stuff and this erks me that I don't understand it.
    Time Machine says it keeps:
Hourly backups for the past 24 hours
Daily backups for the past month
Weekly backups for all previous months
What the heck does that mean?
So every hour it back ups whatever has changed on my iMac, right?
Does it also take a daily snapshot and keep those for a month?
Beyond that what is a weekly backup?  Is it all the changes I made in a month?
And what really freaks me out is lets say I'm an ametur photographer (oh wait, I am )...... I store pictures on my hard drive, and they get backed up on Time Machine.  I don't touch them for over a year or so, and my Time Capsule fills up.  Does that mean that because "the oldest backups are deleted when your disk becomes full" that those old files that haven't been touched in hours, days, or weeks, are the first backed up file to go?
Hoping someone can explain this to me in layman's terms, or with really good analogies.
    Appreciate your time.

Read the expert Pondini on how TM works.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Works.html
There is a bunch of links on that page to some more technical discussion of what is happening.
This FAQ explains a bit more clearly the hourly, weekly and monthly stuff.
So every hour it back ups whatever has changed on my iMac, right?
    Yes.
Does it also take a daily snapshot and keep those for a month?
Yes. The Daily is the first backup of the day.
This is how pondini explains it.
Time Machine automatically "thins" (deletes) backups every time it does a new backup, as shown on the Preference window:
•"Hourly" backups after 24 hours (except the first of the day, which is a "Daily" backup).
So after one day, all the variations on your files are deleted. If you want to recover to version you made a few hours ago it will have to be done on that day.
•"Daily" backups after a month (except the first of each week, which is a "Weekly" backup.)
So you can restore any version of your file, that is part of the first backup of each day for one month.
•"Weekly" backups are kept until Time Machine needs the space for new backups; then one or more of the oldest weeklies will be deleted.
You can restore files saved on the first day of each week, for as long as the backup device has room.
However, Time Machine will never delete the backup copy of anything that was on the disk being backed-up at the time of any remaining backup.  So all that's actually deleted are copies of items whose originals were changed or deleted before the next remaining backup.  If that seems odd, it is!  See  How Time Machine works its Magic  for details.
Honestly even having studied this stuff for a while .. I have no idea what the red bit means.
What is kept long term is Weekly backups. That is the backup of the first day of the week.
When space runs out the Weekly backups will be deleted from the oldest onwards.
But note that anytime you delete a file, that file will also be deleted from the TM backup at some unpredictable time in the future along with all the versions of the file.
The TM backup in the end is supposed to be able to recreate the computer as it is, right now. And to give you some history of file changes for as long as space is available. It is really not supposed to work as an archive of files. Do not expect to find every version of your files or especially files you have deleted on the computer to remain permanently in the TM backup.
Do use clones.. a clone gives you a proper archive of the computer.. make and keep clones and you will be able to recover even files you delete.
See pondini comparison of clones and TM.

  • Restore of time machine backup doesn't work

    Hi all,
im having trouble trying to restore backups made with time machine.
Every time i try to restore a file i there is none available. I do backups about once a week. As soon as i select a file to restore time machine shows no backup available. Only the first backup on the timeline is selectable. What has happened?
On the external harddisk all files are available and i can use the finder to copy the necessary files onto my harddrive. But i doubt thats how it's meant to work.
I'm not sure but i think it all startes with the 10.5.5 update, but i have no definite proof of that.
    HELP PLEASE
    Thank you

    Hi -(,)^(,)-
(hope i spelled that right )
Backups are made from system disk as well as the user data disk. So the process of saving works well!
Your tip gave me a hint. I have two disc. Systemdisk (named MacPro) mounted as / and a user disk,
    (named UserData) mounted as /Users
I can browse all files chonologically using the timeline on Disc MacPro. When i select a folder on UserData the timeline greys out and only the initial backup is visible and selectable. I mounted the second disc as
    /dev/disk1s2 /Users hfs rw,auto 0 2
in /etc/fstab. I'm now positively shure that it all began with 10.5.5 update last week.
Any idea how to solve this problem?
Thanks for your help so far

  • New hard disk after time machine restore doesn't boot, NEED HELP

    Hi,
I just bought a new hard disk for my computer and it works fine if you just install the OS X, but every time I do a restore from my time machine I received a screen after the boot that tells the following:
"You need to restart your computer, hold on the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again."
This message appears in many languages, I do the restart and the same message comes again every time.
I already tried the disk utility when I boot with the OS X DVD and says that the disk is ok. I also tried a PRAM reset.
The result is the same message.
Does any body knows what I am doing wrong or why is this happens?
    thanks for any help

This is a kernel panic. They are often, but not exclusively, hardware related. Some reading for you:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If this only happens after a full restore from TM, that might suggest something you are copying back over is causing the problem. You may want to ask in the Snow Leopard TM forums about how to identify the culprit, or do a partial restore that might skip the system files likely to cause a panic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1342
    Good luck!

  • Pondini - Is This Correct (Time Machine Backup Suddenly Very Quick)

    Pondini -
On Friday, and for months before, a full backup always took 11 to 15 minutes.
I downloaded some photos from the camera into iTunes on Friday and then burned them to a DVD for safe keeping; then shut down and went to bed.
Next backup and evey backup since is completed within 20 seconds.
Just to test and see if I am backing up I've put some very big files on the desktop and on the hard drive and in my user account and included them in backups today, and they all backed up and still in less than 20 seconds.

I've put in bold the only thing that I note which seems "unusual".
And the prior one to the above (which took 12:34):
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb
No pre-backup thinning needed: 8.99 GB requested (including padding), 71.54 GB available
Copied 11509 files (7.1 GB) from volume Macintosh HD.
No pre-backup thinning needed: 8.99 GB requested (including padding), 64.43 GB available
Copied 11509 files (7.1 GB) from volume Macintosh HD.
    Starting post-backup thinning
No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
    Backup completed successfully.
Seems everything is backing up but at lightning speed.
I'm worried I may have a problem that I'm not "seeing". Any cause for concern?

The long backups were copying 7+ GBs; the short one only a few MBs.  If that doesn't seem right, #A2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting has a couple of apps that will show you exactly what was backed-up each time.
The UUID message you highlighted does indicate something unusual, but normal in many circumstances.  Because of that, Time Machine had to do a "deep traversal" which does take considerably longer than usual.  See the blue box in #A6 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting for an explanation.

  • Time Capsule as central storage in addition to Time Machine backups?

I have been using a MacBook and just recently bought my wife the new aluminum MacBook to replace our old PC Desktop. I am considering buying the 1TB Time Capsule as well. I understand it can backup both machines via Time Machine.
    My question:
I have iTunes & iPhoto databases on my MacBook which I modify, edit, and use routinely. Can I set Capsule up so that I can continue to house those databases on my laptop, but any changes sync with centrally stored databases on Capsule that my wife can access through iPhoto and iTunes on her new MacBook. She wouldn't be doing any editing or updating to either, other than use for viewing or syncing her iPod, etc.
Is this within Capsule's capabilities or is is it like my current Time Machine External HD that can only be used for Time Machine backups?
Thank you, any help would be much appreciated before I decide whether or not to make this purchase.

I don't want to discourage you from getting a Time Capsule (TC), but from my experience its primary purpose is to be the target of Time Machine backups. It can also perform as a NAS device, but it does not seem to be well suited as a media server. Sharing a single iTunes or iPhoto Library is, in my opinion, not something I would recommend, especially when streaming iTunes during Time Machine (default: once per hour) backups are running. Also you won't be able to stream the iTunes content from the TC to a media extender, like the AppleTV.
However, there's a lot of opinions out there on this topic. Here are just a few articles to get you started:

  • Time Machine backups fail with no error message

My Time Machine hasn't successfully completed a backup since 3/19. It starts the backup on schedule, indexes over 2 million objects, goes through the phase of preparing objects, and then just stops. I know that there have been many changes since that time, but it isn't backing them up. Please tell me how to fix this.

I have the same problem - Time Machine fails to backup with no error message - after a brief foray into Mavericks. Each time it tries to backup, TM creates a new folder in the "in progress" directory but fails to complete.  Otherwise TM looks normal with no obvious errors. I have several HDDs.  I installed Mavericks on an external drive, migrated my data over to it. Booted from it and after a day or two decided I just didn’t' like it and booted from my Snow Leopard partition.  All was fine but apparently, I had forgotten to turn OFF Time Machine while booted into Mavericks.  Thereafter, Time Machine failed to backup.  Here's what I've done and the error logs:
Deleted the NEW directory that Mavericks created on TM
Done a full reset of TM (deleted: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
    Re-entered the exclusions
Rebuilt the directory structure on the boot disc using DiskWarrior
Repaired the TM disc using Disc Utility
Resynced the Spotlight cache on the boot disk
TM also seems not to do a deep traversal since it just stops after checking files to backup.
Here are the error logs from the TM Buddy widget:
