Time Machine Backup Failed, don't have old backups

Last night I ejected my external hard drive to use that USB port to plug in a card reader and download a bunch of videos and images. This afternoon, when I plugged my external drive back in, I got a Time Machine Error: "This backup is too large for the backup volume". When it tries to back up, I get the more detailed message that this backup needs 6.7 GB of space but there are only 6.2 GB available.
This is the only computer I've ever attached to this external hard drive, so the 49.38 GB that are currently being used should be being used by Time Machine to back up this computer (and so Time Machine should delete old weekly backups to make room for the most recent backup). However, when I open Time Machine to go look at my backups, it says I only have one backup, from last night.
I do like the fact that I can go restore old stuff I've deleted or disastrously edited, so, if possible, I'd like to get my old backups back. Failing that, I guess I need to clear the external drive and just do a new back up.
If someone can help me 1) get my old back ups back or 2) get Time Machine do a successful completely new backup, I'd be really grateful.

My first reaction was that that couldn't possibly be the problem (because I've had no problems at all backing things up for the past year and a half), but it appears that you are correct.
Apparently, all of the pictures and videos are, in fact, too much for my Time Machine external hard drive. I don't have anything else on the external hard drive, but my TM drive is, in fact, much, much smaller than my internal HD.
Time Machine Backups
Capacity: 55.57 GB
Available: 6.19 GB
Used: 49.38 GB
Macintosh HD
Capacity: 232.57 GB
Available: 175.45 GB
Used: 57.12 GB
I see the problem. I guess I'll move all of the videos to a folder that I can exclude from backups. (I much prefer to have excel spreadsheets I put data on every day backed up than blizzard videos shot with my spouse's camera: those I can lose.)
I was so certain that I wasn't running out of space that I didn't check, so I was thinking that I should still have old backups. Since they've been deleted, that's fine with me.
Thanks for asking me to check the relevant sizes!

  • Time machine disk is full - may have inadvertent backups

    Hi,
A couple weeks ago I cloned my MacBook Pro and forgot about it and went to bed. Is it possible that it got backed up to my Timemachine hard disk as a separate Mac? If yes, does anyone know how I may find and remove it? I've also left this clone and a separate installation on another partition plugged in though booted from my internal hard drive. Could that have been backed up too and how would I remove that?
I'm asking because my MBP has a 320 gb hard disk and the Time Machine back up disk is 1 TB and had something like 600 GB available a few weeks ago.
Last night it stopped the back up and said the disk was full and sure enough there's less than 1 GB available.
I've never run into a full Time Machine disk, and I don't want to toss away old stuff for multiple copies of the past few weeks so if anyone can advise what to do to trouble shoot I will be grateful.

Ok. After poking around I discovered the two external partitions did get backed up. So I went into System prefs > Time Macine and turned them off.
Now the question is will Time Machine delete them automatically or do I have to go hunting for them to delete them?

  • Time Machine [artial restore : don't have permission

Any Suggestions on what happened in the below scenario?
I upgraded to SL and time machine did it's backup. The first attempt it reported not enough space so I excluded all drives except the boot drive. Deleted TM file and reformatted the ext. drive and let TM run again. First test of recovery was good(recovered file).
Then disaster hit - I deleted a folder of photoshop templetes so used TM to restore. It restored the root folder and some sub-folders then gave me the message I didn't have permission to read file and quit.
I recovered the folders from a cloned drive created by CCC.
Like to understand so if it goofs I can correct and go forth into
    the next abyss ..

I also had a similar thing tonight with a folder of PDF files. Was backed up from my machine a couple of days ago to an external firewire disk, now I don't have permission to do a partial restore on some files. What can be done?

  • Time machine not backing up, only very old backup available

    Hi,
I have been using Time Machine with Time Capsule 1TB for the last 9 months.  During the first 3 months, hourly backup worked just fine.
I have recently noticed that hourly backup have not been working for the last 6 months.  In Time Machine, only backup dated February 2011 are available.
When doing "Back up now", status moves from "making back up disk available" to Calculating changes and "Waiting to Back up" within 10-15seconds.
No new backup are created, despite obvious changes to files on my iMac HD.
I have read many discussion threads but couldn't find an answer to this situation.  Please help!
    Thanks

I have done as per your suggestion above - didn't work.  I still have the same error message in the Console:

I have also tried shutting down the backup volume (Time Capsule) and rebooting. No success.
FYI: The Time Capsule is also used as Airport Extreme - unclear whether it could have implications or not.

Usually I just say OK when Time Machine can't complete a backup in either my computer or my wife's, and a couple of months later I get the irritating message again.

If I recall correctly you do this by going on to TM and using one of the
pull down menus in the top apple menu strip ....
I myself am having problems with TM. I erased the external target disk and
started TM again. However it stops wverytime and refuses to backup ..
Telling me there isn't enough room even though the ext space is much
bigger. It also quotes the size of my HD content about 20% bigger than
    finder says weird.

Repair Permissions is not relevant for Time Machine backups. It only
repairs permissions on files installed by the OS X Installer application
(or the OS installation or preinstalled OS, or Software Update). TM
    backups don't qualify.
In any case, Time Machine deletes old backups using root privileges so
it doesn't care about permissions on the backup drive.

Something odd is happening here. Given your described usage, you should
not be chewing through 1 TB of backups in less than three months. I've
gone more than a year on a drive with a similar ratio and not filled it
(and I am backing up my downloads, sometimes two or three times as I
    move them to other folders).
Has anything major been done to the computer within that timeframe, e.g.
installing a new hard drive, or erasing the main drive and restoring
from backup? If so, that drive is treated as a new one and would require
another full backup, leaving the old one there.
A similar possibility is if Time Machine thought the computer had been
replaced, which would result in a new backup being started, and would
also leave the old backup unable to be deleted automatically.
In this case, you wouldn't be able to directly access the backups prior
to the change using "Enter Time Machine", but could get to them by
holding down the Option key and choosing "Browse Other Backup Disks"
    from the Time Machine menu.
    > What suggestions do you have for me to resolve this issue.
Which OS X version are you running?
Have a look in system.log (using Console) to see if Time Machine logged
any relevant information when the backup failed. Look for references to
"backupd" (which is the background software which does Time Machine
    backups).

The old OS was Mac X 10.5.8.   I think the new one is  10.7.2     Lion.

Using Migrations Assistant will only move the data and other things over, it will not bring over a previous version of the Os since the 2014 model can run anything earlier than Yosemite.

How can I recover the NAS back up to put on my new Time Machine.
Talking to Apple Support Adviser was a waste of time on case number 239647273
    Any thoughts or pointers?

Keep the old OS around and just kick the tires and test new OS. Apple has a history and habit of breaking support in things like this.
You can use TimeMachine as one level of backup, and even there there were changes with Lion, I would always recommend foremost backup clones of every volume. And clone (SuperDuper etc) can be stored on something like HP NAS Media Server which also was supporting TimeMachine, iTunes - until Apple made that harder and more their own proprietary format.

Rather than "upgrade" I would clone the system, and do a clean install, then allow Setup Assistant to import your files.

  • After a complete restore of Mac from a Time Machine volume, I don't want a full backup the next time Time Machine backs up.

After performing a complete restore of my Mac from a Time Machine volume, Time Machine wants to perform a full backup the next time it backs up.This is normal: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
But I don't have enough free space on my external hard drive to do this because my external hard drive already contains one complete backup. My hard disc on my MacBook is 320 and my external drive is 500 GB, so it doesn't add up. I don't want to delete the original backup in case something goes wrong during the new full backup. What can I do?

You don't have too many options.  The best approach would be to buy a larger external drive.  The guideline for Time Machine is that you should have 2-3 times as much capacity on the external drive as data you're backing up.  See item 1 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  In any case, you can't prevent that first full backup unless you're willing to turn off Time Machine permanently.

  • I'm using Time Machine and a LaCie external drive to backup. I also have a 8 GB LaCie flash drive I want to use for small jobs. If I plug the LaCie flash drive in, is my Mac going to think it is the LaCie external drive and start trying to backup?

    no.

  • "No configured AirPort base stations have been found."  I can see the content of the TimeCapsule's drive in finder and Time Machine but it no longer is making backups. Ideas?

Bought new TimeCapsule March 2013. Worked fine. Now get "No configured AirPort base stations have been found."  I can see the content of the TimeCapsule's drive in finder and Time Machine but it no longer is making backups. Ideas?

Make sure that you have AirPort Utility 6.3.1 installed on your Mac.

Then, power off the entire network...all devices...in any order that you want
Wait a minute, then start the modem first and let it run a full minute
Start the next device connected to the modem, which may be your Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time the same way until the entire network is back up
See if AirPort Utility can "see" the Time Capsule now.
If yes, try another backup. If you encounter an error message, post back with the exact message.

telling me to buy a new router is NOT a solution.
And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle?

I have Photoshop Elements 10 on a new Mac, using Yosemite 10.1.1 - PE locks up every time I try to sign in. This software was restored to this computer from Time Machine after a theft of my old Mac. How can I fix this? It keeps telling me that there are missing files, too. If I upgrade to Elements 12 or beyond, will this fix the problem?

You can't sign in because there is nothing to sign in to. For PSE 10 the only sign in was to photoshop.com, which has been dead and gone for a year and half. Just skip the sign in. Reinstalling will not change this.
