Time Machine backup fails w/error: Backup Volume is Read Only

This is another Leopard Bug! My Time Machine has always "just worked," but tonight, backup failed. Looking at the error message, it says, "Backup Volume is Read Only." My Time Machine was set up correctly, and has been working fine for quite some time. Now what?

Update: The next scheduled backup succeeded. I didn't change anything. Doesn't exactly give you that feeling of confidence in your equipment. The whole point of Time Machine is it is supposed to work in the background. If I have to think about it, and check up on it, it is useless, and I may as well return to my old manual backup methods.

Usually I just say OK when Time Machine can't complete a backup in either my computer or my wife's, and a couple of months later I get the irritating message again.
This time, it keeps returning.   I have no idea what to do:

If I recall correctly you do this by going on to TM and using one of the
pull down menus in the top apple menu strip ....
I myself am having problems with TM. I erased the external target disk and
started TM again. However it stops wverytime and refuses to backup ..
Telling me there isn't enough room even though the ext space is much
bigger. It also quotes the size of my HD content about 20% bigger than
    finder says weird.

Repair Permissions is not relevant for Time Machine backups. It only
repairs permissions on files installed by the OS X Installer application
(or the OS installation or preinstalled OS, or Software Update). TM
    backups don't qualify.
In any case, Time Machine deletes old backups using root privileges so
it doesn't care about permissions on the backup drive.

Something odd is happening here. Given your described usage, you should
not be chewing through 1 TB of backups in less than three months. I've
gone more than a year on a drive with a similar ratio and not filled it
(and I am backing up my downloads, sometimes two or three times as I
    move them to other folders).
Has anything major been done to the computer within that timeframe, e.g.
installing a new hard drive, or erasing the main drive and restoring
from backup? If so, that drive is treated as a new one and would require
another full backup, leaving the old one there.
A similar possibility is if Time Machine thought the computer had been
replaced, which would result in a new backup being started, and would
also leave the old backup unable to be deleted automatically.
In this case, you wouldn't be able to directly access the backups prior
to the change using "Enter Time Machine", but could get to them by
holding down the Option key and choosing "Browse Other Backup Disks"
    from the Time Machine menu.
    > What suggestions do you have for me to resolve this issue.
Which OS X version are you running?
Have a look in system.log (using Console) to see if Time Machine logged
any relevant information when the backup failed. Look for references to
"backupd" (which is the background software which does Time Machine
    backups).

  • Time Machine restore failing with error code -43

I have an external hard drive with a 1tb partition that I use for my time machine backups. I am trying to restore my system and I repeatedly get "an error occurred while restoring from the backup time machine...restart"
I tried on several different backups, ranging from a few hours, a few days and a few months. All of them fail with exit code -43. Here is a sample log:

I am desperately trying to restore my system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A little search found this forum thread.

It appears that Time Machine needs to have it's preferences reset. Apparently it's lost track of the drive you use for TM and probably set itself to use the new external drive you were working with.

  • Time Machine once worked, now external hard drive is "read only"

I have a 2005 iMac G5, running OS X 10.5. Had some power issues, and reinstalled (and archived) my OS a couple of time.
Recently purchased Western Digital 1TB external hard drive for back up. It worked once or twice, but now shows "read only" status.
Disk Utility won't do anything, because it's read only (can't repair, erase, partition or convert).
Hard drive works on PC running Windows 7, and newer Mac with Snow Leopard, just not the one computer I need it for. Any suggestions?

    This may help:
What to do if Time Machine reports you don't have permission
This was posted in the Apple Discussions by V.K. I have only modified it slightly to be more generic.
The problem seems to be that 10.5.6 changes permissions on a file so that even the root user doesn't have write peivileges. I have no idea why they did this. The workaround suggested in [an]other post will probably work, too, but i did something less drastic. Instead of deleting the file I changed permissions on it, and it worked just fine. An added benefit is that the permission change seems to stick, so you don't have to delete the file every time you change a drive.
[Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt [enter] the following command:
    sudo chmod 644 /volumes/"TM drive name"/.xxxxxxxxxxxx
The name of the file .xxxxxxxxxxxx is based on the MAC address of your computer and will be different for every computer. Put the name of the TM drive in the above and keep the quotes.
You'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see) which is normal.
This was edited by Kappy just for cleanup.
Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Time Machine Backup Failed with error: 2

I have been doing unattended continuous backups to a 1 TB drive for about 4 months via Time Machine. In the last 2 months I have been getting a dialog box with this message: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup directory." In each case I have gone to Disk Utility to repair the disk, and each time have had to reboot to get the Repair Disk function to work, since without a reboot, the backup disk won't unmount. After repair, the backups resume, but the frequency of the failures is beginning to worry me. I never had problems with scheduled SuperDuper backups and am thinking of returning to that approach, albeit different.
Below is what is listed in in the system log after the backup failure. It lists "error: 2", whatever that is.
The backup disk has over 400GB space remaining.
Can anyone help me with this?
May 2 19:34:17 Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[12497]: Backup requested by user

    Thanks,
    Art

Betty - actually, no. Rebooting alone didn't resolve the problem. Time Machine still wouldn't resume backups.
Once the directory was rebuilt via Disk Utility, it is up and running again, at least for a while.

  • Time Machine. Backup failed with error code: 21

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to Leopard 10.5.4 mainly for the time machine backup. I'm using a DNS-323 in a RAID1 configuration as the TM backup drive. Also I have the DNS-323 connected to my Airport Extreme through the ethernet to give NAS ability to my home network.
After much hunting around the forums I got the sparsebundle created and copied to the DNS-323 share volume. See http://www.flokru.org/2008/02/29/time-machine-backups-on-network-shares-in-leopa rd/ My thanks to flokru.
However, TM is still not working. The console messages have the following:
Network mountpoint /Volume/Volume_1 not owned by backupd... remounting
    Network volume mounted at /Volume/Volume11
Failed to mount disk image /Volume/Volume1_1/MacBook001b6334c307.sparebundle
    Backup failed with error: 21
It would appear this error lies in the way TM is trying to mount the volume, specifically that Volume_1, the DNS-323 volume name, is not owned by TM. TM then tries to create a new volume, Volume11 and stick the sparebundle on it.
Is there a way of making TM "own" the volume, Volume_1?
Has anybody else seen this error or better yet, got a fix for it?

    James,
It would appear this error lies in the way TM is trying to mount the volume, specifically that Volume_1, the DNS-323 volume name, is not owned by TM. TM then tries to create a new volume, Volume11 and stick the sparebundle on it.
Is there a way of making TM "own" the volume, Volume_1?
Actually, it is not TMs failure to mount the volume that is causing your failure to backup. I have received the same Console message using a Time Capsule. However, Time Machines' attempt to 'remount' the volume always succeeds and the backup goes through. That appears not to be your experience, but it is NOT because the volume is not being mounted. It is.
    *Mount Point Conflict (TMDisk-1)*
NOTE: the following distinguishes “network drive” (the physical hard disk) from “disk image” (the sparsebundle file TM uses to backup to).
First of all, I am convinced that the second mount point that is created (in your case Volume11) is due to the fact that you already had the network drive mounted on your desktop at the time of the attempted backup. Was that the case?
When you manually mount a network drive the system creates a mount point in the /Volumes folder (Let’s call it TMDisk ). While that exists any attempt by Time Machine to mount the same disk will created a second mount point ( TMDisk-1 )
Nevertheless, as I have observed, this doesn't seem to prevent backups from taking place successfully, at least on the Time Capsule. And according to your Console logs it appears that your volume is being ‘remounted’ successfully.
*”The Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Mounted”*
The real issue is Time Machines' failure to mount the disk image (sparsebundle) contained on your network drive.
+Failed to mount disk image /Volume/Volume1_1/MacBook001b6334c307.sparebundle+
    +Backup failed with error: 21+
More often than not this is due to having the Time Machine backup disk image (sparsebundle) mounted on your desktop during a backup attempt.
Eject the backup disk image (sparsebundle) by either clicking the little Eject icon to the right of the disk image in the Finders’ Sidebar, or Ctrl-Click the drive icon on the desktop and select “Eject” from the contextual menu. Now try backing up again or launching Time Machine to view previous backups.
For more information, see an article on this here:
Alternatively, a backup disk image can fail to mount if there is a problem with your computer name.
    *Proper Computer Name* #
Make sure your computer has a proper name. Go to System Preferences --> Sharing. Time Machine needs to differentiate your computer from others on your network (i.e. "Bills MacBook" or "Office iMac"). If the "Computer Name" field is blank, create a name. Realize that if this step is necessary, you will likely have to start the Time Machine backup process over again and do another full initial backup.
According to THIS article [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1760], Time Machine may experience problems if your computer name includes certain characters. Make sure the computer name only includes ASCII characters from the following set.
    (0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)
Once a change in the computer name occurs, you should stop and restart Sharing on the affected computer. Uncheck and then recheck Sharing in the Services list on the left.
Let me know if any of this helps.
    Cheers!

  • Time Machine Backups Failing w/ Error: (-36) SrcErr:YES

    Machine History:
    2008 iMac
    2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo
    4 GB of 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Version 10.7.5 OSX
External G-Drive 500 GB HD connected via Firewire.
Late yesterday my iMac started acting crazy.  On reboot the machine did not come back up and was hung up on the Apple Logo.  The circular progress meter was spinning and the system would not boot into the OS.  At this point I started the system with the command key and R to get to the ulitlity menu.  At this point I initiated a full system restore back to a backup dated June 10th 2013.  The restore ran clean with no errors and the system came back up.  At this point I wiped out my G-Drive so that I could take a full backup of the system.  I partitioned the G-Drive 400 GB for Time Machine and 100 GB to manually backup photos and other files.  I created the partition and manually backup family photos since it seems that at times I've added photos into iPhoto and they don't get added into the backup sets.
At this point I noticed that the Spotlight Indexing job was running in the background.  The same time the Time Machine Full backup was running and initated and I'm not sure what happend.  I recieved a generic error stating that the backup could not be completed at this time.  Backups to disk will not run and recieve the same error.  It appears that there are a ton of files on my mac HD that have this Error: (-36) SrcErr:YES error.  I've tried a few things:
Using Terminal to mv or cp the files locally on the mac HD.  This fails with I/O Errors
Using Terminal to mv or cp the files to the backup HD connected via FireWire.  That fails with I/O Errors.
I've confirmed that the files are readable by the application.  iMovie in this case.  I was able to play the video content.  So I belive that the files are in fact ok and good.
I've manually ran a full reindexing of spotlight.  I suspected that the indexing was out of sync and that Time Machine was having a hard time with the metadata.
I've also confirmed that JPG file had this error in the /var/logs/system.log.  I was able to open the JPG with preview and iPhoto with no issues.  But, I can not copy or move the file to any locations on either the HD or the Backup HD.
Permissions on the files are rw-r-r.  In another case I changed them to rw-rw-rw and that still did not make a difference as I would have expected.
My fear is that my Mac HD is getting ready to take a DUMP literally.  Most of the stuff on the machine I don't care about however I do care about the family photo's and videos.  To this point I've been able to manually backup my photos to the external disk.  I have not yet backed up my videos.  Starting to get stressed about that.  I was about to take the PC in to Apple Care at the local store but wanted to disucss here as well.  Any help would be appreciated.

This is done.  I went into the Apple store and they had me run SMART Untiliy on my machine.  There are a ton of bad sectors on my HD.  Time for a new disk.

  • "Time Machine Error   The backup volume is read only"

Lately, every time I try to backup to my Time Capsule using Time Machine it fails and I get a message saying "Time Machine Error The backup volume is read only. To select a different volume, open system preferences and choose Time Machine" So I do that and I see the Time capsule listed. I don't want to select anything but the Time Capsule, cuz what else do I have, right? Am I wrong in assuming the "backup volume" is the Time Capsule? Anyway, I have tried changing the permissions on the time capsule, but when I get the "get info" box for the time capsule, there is not an option to change those settings, they are grayed out. Every thing worked well for about a week and then this started. My backup volume must have been "Read & Write" at first, because I can see what was backed up when I open Time Machine. Anybody have a clue what's going on? How can I make the back up volume "Read & Write" again and why did it change to "Read Only?"

Nope, I am using the same passwords as ever, both users have the same password, BTW. The password I gave to the Time Capsule is different, tho, but that password is for the wireless aspect of the Time Capsule, so that wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it?
I also get a message box that says "Disk Repair The disk "Backup of XXX's Computer" was not repairable by this computer, it is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible." This box appears in conjunction with the appearance of the Norton's virus scan box scanning the time capsule.

Reboot the TC.. Sometimes you need to reboot the whole network.
This is what comes of Lion and then made worse in Mountain Lion of Apple not spending enough time to fix the bugs.
    Read C12 in pondini.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
C17 can be related I think.

  • Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule. The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be created (error 60)"

We are Mountain Lion using Time Machine to backup to Time Capsule. When the backup tries to run, an error appears after a couple of minutes saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." Then an error shows up saying "Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Time Capsule. The backup disk image /Volumes/Data/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle could not be created (error 60)"
I low level reformatted the Time Capsule and that didn't fix it. I then tried using Time Machine on another computer to back up to that same Time Capsule and it worked- so I'm doubting it's the Time Capsule.
I've noticed that when Time Machine runs, that a  folder called Data  at /Volumes/ appears while Time Machine is trying to back up. I think it's making the sparsebundle to transfer to the Time Capsule.
However, after a couple of minutes- it comes back saying that the disk is unreadable.
I think it's something wrong with either creating the sparsebundle or opening the disk image that seems to be a part of the Time Machine backup process on the local drive.
I am able to create a disk image with Disk Utilitiy without any problem on that system. I've repaired the disk and disk permissions with Disk Utility and replaced the directory with Disk Warrior. I've trashed what preference files I could find and restarted. I've completely removed the backup destination from the computer and added it back again.
    Help!
    Thanks,
    Neil

Yes, exactly.  It makes one sparse bundle per Mac.
It's possible the TC's disk is too full for a new sparse bundle, or there may be some other problem.
Via the Finder, locate the existing sparse bundle (see the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 if you're not sure how to do that).  See how large it is (plus how large anything else that may be there).  If the total is very near the size of the TC, that may be the problem.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question (probably the first one displayed), then copy and post all the messages here.

I've received an error message    Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to Time Capsule,   the backup disk image  /Volumes/Date/....MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.  Any suggestions as to what I can do to fix it?

I've got mine working again by deleting a partial backup that was on the Time Capsule.
I mounted the backup sparsebundle, and then browsed the content and found a filestucture named <timstamp>.inProgress. I removed that and the followed the tip to disconnect described above. That did the trick for me.
