Time Machine backup history present but inaccessible after Mountain Lion clean install

Hi all,
A few days ago, I took the Mountain Lion plunge and after performing all the preliminary data copying to external hard drives as well as on last Time Machine backup to my dedicated Time Machine external hard drive, I booted from my ML recovery USB thumb drive, reformatted the internal HD, and proceeded to perform a clean install of OS X 10.8.
The ML install and initial setup completed without a hitch, and I had no difficulty in reconnecting to my existing Time Machine EHD and performing an initial backup of the freshly upgraded Mountain Lion system. It took several minutes in the "preparing backup" phase; but once it got through that, it backed up my entire system (which was basically nothing more than the new OS and iLife at this point) within an hour or so.  Time Machine has since worked reliably in performing the automatic backups every hour.
But here's the problem:  My backup history went back all the way to March 2011 before the ML upgrade, and it still (sorta kinda) does now.  However, although I can see all of the backup history tick marks when I enter TM, the ONLY SELECTABLE backups are from the point where ML was installed and onward.  The previous Lion and Snow Leopard backups are visible; just not selectable.  I also verified that the physical backup folders are still present on my TM EHD dating all the way back to last March.  I ran a verify and repair operation on the TM volume, and it came back clean.  I have disconnected and reconnected the TM EHD to TM and of course rebooted, but no joy.  TM did not force me to "start over" with a new backup as some posters have complained of. And it seems to be working fine otherwise.
Has anyone else had a similar experience after upgrading to ML?  Any thoughts on how I might reconnect to my TM backup history?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

How did you put your data back after the erase?
I didn't, or rather I haven't yet.  Basically, all I have done so far is:
Reformat Lion HD and install ML clean from USB thumb drive
Run through initial virgin boot setup, e.g. enter my Apple ID and desired user account info
Change a few preferences (the "use right side of mouse for secondary click" setting first and foremost!)
Configured Time Machine to use pre-existing Time Machine Backups EHD and let it do initial backup (which it simply added on to the existing backup history as I had hoped)
Drag-and-drop copied my saved iTunes library (~50 GB) from my ext. FW drive to my new Home Music folder and confirmed that iTunes was working and able to sync with my iPhone and iPad
Installed the iLife suite from my Bundled Applications DVD and then updated those apps via the App Store
Obviously the iTunes folder is an exception to "I haven't yet", but basically, the Lion's share (pun intended) of my previous data has not yet been copied back from the temporary storage on the EHD.
The reason you can't see the backups of the old home folder from the new one is simply that they have different names.
Yes, I know that now.  Everything was fine all along.  I just didn't realize that TM [quite sensibly] grays out any backup history finder windows and right-hand-side tick marks that contain no backup of the folder currently in focus.  Since the folder I had in focus was one that didn't exist before I installed Mountain Lion, there was nothing to access except for the most recent post-upgrade backups.
Thanks much for your help.

  • Time machine backup from OSX 10.5 to Mountain lion doesn't want to recover.

    Hi!
I have just upgraded my iMac from 2007, from the original oreparting system (10.5?) to mountain lion.
I had read a lot about the problems with loosing files so I made a complete backup of the computer using time machine.
I then updated to snow leopard as a "from scratch" installment and then upgraded to mountain lion via the app store.
I therefore had a completely blank computer with only mountain lion installed.
When I now try to take my time machine backup that I did and install it straight over, then it says:
"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “.localized”." or the same sentence but something else instead of localized.
Any tips on how I can try to sort this out?
    Thanks!
    Annika

  • My time machine backup was created on iMac with Mountain Lion and my new iMac has Mavericks installed, will I be able to restore a backup from time machine to new imac and all applications work ok

time machine backup to new iMac

Yes, however it's always wise to update your apps to ensure you have the most up-to-date version. Use Setup Assistant to migrate your data, apps and settings to the new iMac, simply follow the on-screen directions. If the new machine has already arrived and you have already run Setup Assistant, connect the TM backup to the new machine and run Migration Assistant (a cousin of Setup Assistant) and follow the on-screen directions. You can find Migration Assistant in Applications - Utilities - Migrations Assistant or you can use the keyboard shortcut of Command + Spacebar and type "Migration Assistant".

  • After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external back-up? Following Apple advice for use of Migration Assistant did not work creating similar issues leading to clean install.

After a Lion clean install, how do I retrieve my data from external hard drive?
Following Apple advice I used Migration Assistant which crashed new system twice which is why I had to clean install Lion in the first place.
Is there a sure way of doing it?
I have only a few programs that I will have to install myself and that should not be a problem.
I just want my data, music and photos back where I can use them.

Time machine backups. I went to migration assistant a few hours ago and limited my selection to "users", no need for applications, settings and other files.  Stuff started moving over at a fast pace but has now seemed to stall.
I will let it run overnight as there are lots of songs and photos as well as a few movies.
If that does not work, then I will go into TM and try restore. I have restored some things in the past such a mail files and it has worked well.
The Apple fellow at the store told me to go right into TM, he may have had a point. I'll get it eventually.

  • Time Machine Backups disk not automatically unmounting after backup completes in Lion

I am using Time Machine over WiFi on a 3rd party USB drive shared as an AirDisk through an Airport Extreme router. Ever since switching to Lion (clean install), I have noticed that the Time Machine backup disk will not automatically unmount after a backup is completed. This creates a problem when my MacBook Pro comes back from sleep. Specifically, the WiFi notification icon in the Finder toolbar indicates that WiFi is connected, even though it's not connected to a network, and I am unable to connect to any networks for what seems like several minutes until the Time Machine backups disk disappears from the desktop and WiFi actually connects.
Since the disk was not cleanly unmounted, Time Machine then keeps complaining that the sparse bundle file is locked and cannot be mounted every time it tries to do a backup. I have to either disconnect/reconnect the USB drive physically from the router, or restart the router every time this happens to resolve the issue. That is getting really annoying to have to do every time. I suppose I could manually unmount the Time Machine disk after every backup but it's ridiculous to have to do that every time I want to put the computer to sleep.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue and is there a fix?

For others who might be having this problem - I was able to resolve it by connecting my backup disk to my mac via USB, completely erasing it, and starting over from a new backup. Disk Utility was not reporting any errors when I verified the disk, but I went ahead and repartitioned it and started fresh. The disk now automatically unmounts after backups complete.

  • Time machine backup history gone

I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 on a MacBook Pro. I do time machine backups regularly to a Synology NAS (behind a Fritz Box router).
This worked well all the time. The last backup has been made last Thursday before I went into weekend.
Today I suddenly got the message that my backup is 230 days old, so I started to investigate, since this can't be.
TM says, first and last backup are from February 3rd 2014.
When I mount TM I also only get this choice to restore data from, so I aborted.
Looking at the logs from today I get the following kernel and backupd related lines:

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want. I know Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

  • How do I copy a time machine backup onto my old computer after I've replaced the hard drive?

    Hi everyone,
I own a MacBook that I purchased in 2009, and it's served me very well since then; the only exception is that the hard drive suffered after I dropped the computer, and I had to replace it last month.
The old hard drive is now useless, and the new one is nearly blank, and I'd like to upload my old Time Machine contents onto my computer without losing some new files I've gained. What's the best way to do it?
    Thanks!

Use Migration Assistant to move over the files from the Time Machine backup to the Mac.
Finder > Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant

  • Old time machine backup partition erased, but new partition failed

I had a defective time machine backup and had to start over.  My disk has 4TB.  The original time machine backup contained two backups from different laptops and was in the largest partition of 2TB.  I then had two addition 1TB partitions.  I remade new time machine backups to each of the 1TB partitions for each of the mac book pros.  When I went to delete and change the original 2TB partition I found I could minus it out to create free space, but all attempts to try to repartition it as 2TB or as 2 1 TB pieces and even a piece as small as 200MB failed and asked me to resize closer to the original partition.
I have seen many similar issues, but not quite like this.  I have already shut down the external drive and unplugged it and the restarted my machine, but to no effect.  I now have 2 1 TB partitions and a 2 TB empty space.
    Any suggestions?
I'm a little afraid to copy the Time Machine backups to a new drive as I heard that is NOT a good idea.
Is this a problem created when a partition is used for a Time Machine backup?
    Han

How are you looking for the backup?
Time Machine will only show the active backup.
You can hold down the Option key while selecting the Time Machine menu and you will have the option to Browse other Time Machine backups.
Here is some good info on how Time Machine "thinks:" http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html

  • Time Machine Backup and storing certain files, switching to lion

    Hey Gang,
I need to unload my harddrive.
Whats the best way to do this?  I want to keep some files off my harddrive to free up space.  But i want to access them anytime.  Should i just do i time machine backup then delete the files and still have access to them? Or should i keep the files out seperate from a time machine backup.
    what do you think?
also, i'm getting a 2 tb drive to do a time machine so i can switch over to lion, and if i dont like it, switch back.  Any idea's on that front?
    Thanks

I woke up 05:00 a.m this morning, so I'll try to grab my coffe and be more specific:
Of course, in general you should not delete backups.
    But:
    1) How does your Time Machine Volume react/get filled if you happen to MOVE 100 GB of files between backuped volumes, for instance?
    2) If the license for Leopard and Snow Leopard or other software, REQUIRES me to delete all copies of the software from the machine, I need to know a) How I delete all backups of the Snow Leopard partition files. And b) Other software: if the App spreads itself into Libraries, Caches and whatever places, I actually need to know more of the general subject on how I according to the legalese and my own wish, need to find such places in the file system. And delete all copies in Time Machine backups.
I am familiar with the general principle of never deleting anything if I do not have to. I have zillions of mail files from the nineties still left in my Mail folders. Never do something that is hard to reverse, if there is not good reason for it.
I am new to participating in the Communities, so, yes I'll try to keep the discussion to what the question was!
But right now - please if anyone could answer the problem I already described here, I would be thankful. I'll not argue that Time Machine deletions has to do with the general problem of exactly how Apps occupy the file system.
But I now realise that I could ctrl-click my Snow Leopard partition and delete it from the Time Machine volume. I'll try that when I get so far!
    Thanks!

  • Can I restore time machine backup from Panther 10.3.9 to Lion 10.7?

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade my old mac running Panther 10.3.9 to a new Mac running Lion before it fails on me.
Can I simply restore a Time Machine backup from Panther to Lion? Will my applications come across and function normally?
Let me know if you need any specific names of apps.

No your applications will not run on an Intel Mac running Lion.  Macs running Panther 10.3.9 were PPC processors.  Lion has no support for these old Applications  Leopard and Snow Leopard supported some old PPC Applications using Rosetta

  • HT3275 Continue using Time Machine backup history after switching disk from local to Airport Extreme?

I have been using Time Machine on my iMac for backups for quite some time. The disk I've been using is a single disk connected via USB. Now that I got an AirPort Extreme base station, I wanted to switch the disk drive to the AirPort Extreme, but continue to use my existing backup history and not start a new one.
When I did that, Time Machine complaint that the disk does not have enough space left to do the initial backup. Again, I don't want to start a new backup history but rather seamlessly append to and continue with my existing backup history that's already on the disk.
    Is this possible and how?
    Thanks,
    Torsten

As the other poster says, that's usually unreliable and not supported by Apple. See:  Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk.

That's because Time Machine stores backups differently when they're done over a network.  See the blue box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 for an explanation.

  • Time Machine backup over wifi not working after upgrade to 10.6.3

I have a firewire external hard disk connected to directly into my imac which I use for back-up. The imac is wired into an ethernet LAN. I also backup my MacBook Pro to the same hard disk. The MacBook is connected to the backup disk via a wifi link to a router. All has been working well until I upgraded Snow Leopard to 10.6.3 and now the back-up is not working for the MacBook. The same thing happened after the last point release upgrade but at the time I thought it must have been user error. Last time I had to trash the backups and start from scratch. Can anyone shed any light?

Try reselecting the drive (from the laptop) via TM Preferences > Select Disk (first select the "none" drive, then the correct one).
If that doesn't help, try a "full reset" of TM on the laptop, per #A4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Time Machine Backup History  Disappeared

Hi, since I moved to a new place, Time Machine did only one partial backup (with errors) and since then, I'm also unable to make any backup to Time Capsule ("not enough space").
I can't see my old backups as well (only this partial).
I checked a post similar a while ago, and I can assure that my computer's name is unchanged. The only thing that I changed is that TC was wired connected to my old router and TC was creating the wireless network. Now Sky's router is the wireless router and TC is connected to this existing wireless network. When I open Time capsule using Finder, I can see a file called (what I believe is my backup file) "my computer's name followed by numbers and letters.sparsebundle. (date modified 30mar08).
Can anyone suggested what I should do please ?
It looks like TC lost the link to Imac, but I don't know how to rebuild it. That's why TM says there is not enough space.
    Many thanks,
    Renato

"Time Machine Error The back up disk image could not be created"
This error message appears when there are problems with the network communication between the Time Capsule and the computer. There are several things that you can do to correct this problem.
Step 1. Check Local Machine Name. Click on System Preferences and then click on Sharing. Make sure your computer's name is entered properly. You might try simplifying the name as well by removing spaces and commas or dashes if they are present.
Step 2. Check the Time Capsule Name. Use AirPort Utility - Manual Setup - Time Capsule Tab to make sure that the Time Capsule name does not have spaces, commas, or dashes.
Step 3. Show Connected Servers on Desktop. Click on an open space on the desktop to display the Finder menus at the top of the screen. Check Preferences in the Finder menu and make sure there is a check next to the box that reads "Connected Servers" under the heading "Show these devices on the desktop"
Step 4. Power down your system for 5-10 minutes. Power up your modem first and let it run for a few minutes, then the Time Capsule, etc. and then your computers.

  • Time machine backups earliest hour but nothing later?

ok so i use time machine to back up my computer. im wondering what happened...
on sunday the 25th i had hourly backups like usual, i tried to get back into sundays TM and the only one there is at 144am. ---how do i get back to the later times? i need 544am! sometime between those 2 times, i lost some info.
