Time machine backup in mavericks

hey guys, so i started backing up external hard drive today with time machine and it started doing the full backup, which estimated 7 hours, i had to run somewhere else so i hit the pause button on the time machine, and shut off the computer... i was informed through reading that once i started my computer up again it would automatically resume or i'd hit a resume button but the only thing is there is a back up now button... on the top menu bar, there's a greyed out sign saying waiting to complete first backup... should i just let everything stand as is or is there something that i need to do to get things to back up again now... it says on the preferences that next back is scheduled for 6.45 and it's 6:04 so i'm not sure if it's even backing up right now...
thanks for the replies guys...
kirk

nvm guys it started backing up all is good, it's only 6:20 too, 25 mintues before schedule backup... was thinking that was weird!

  • When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?

I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot.  This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups.  It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up.  I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time.  I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much.  I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks.  The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks.  I have wasted more time than I care to.  I am think of going back to Windows.  I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem.  Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.

Allen Thanks for your reply.  All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner.  Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data.  I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection.  In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge.  There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem.  I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support.  I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space.  This might be a problem also.  However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive.  Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past.  This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period.  Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working.  Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions.  If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution.  The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it.  I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time.  I run it every few days.

  • Time machine backup of mavericks gone after yosemite upgrade

I am a podcaster and enjoyed the podcast format in garage band. However, after upgrading to yosemite, my garageband is gone. So (annoyingly) I had to buy it again.
However, after doing so, I learned that in the latest version (10.0.3), podcast formats are not supported. I know I have the old garageband (10.0.2, I suppose) on my time machine back up of mavericks.
I figured I would just pull that single application out of the backup and throw it into yosemite. Not happening, because whenever I pull up time machine, it has marked the date that I made the backup, but it wont let me access it. It doesnt even tell me I can't. It's as if its not there, but then when I open my External HD in finder, there it is, the time machine backup file.
I read somewhere that when you first plug in the HD after upgrading, it has to "index" the HD, but after leaving it plugged in awhile, there appears to be no change. I've messaged apple about this over a week ago, and no reply whatsoever. Their customer service has really hit the fan these past few years.
Anyway, any advice would be appreciated. I'd like to get back to my podcasting. I should have never upgraded, but now I cant go back to mavericks because I can't access the **** back up.
    Regards,
    Colin

    Yes, backups should be accessible.
I've been running Time Machine since it was launched (Leopard, I think) and have upgraded through all iterations of OS X and am currently on Yosemite. Whenever I've needed to restore a file (not often, but it does happen) that was created whilst running an earlier OS X they have restored as expected when running Time Machine from the latest OS.

  • Mountain lion time machine backup onto mavericks?

    Hi all;
I recently had to get rid of my 2013 MBP running mountain lion. In the process, I had to to a time machine backup to an external HD to preserve my [then] current data.
Now I am replacing that computer with a brand new MBP with mavericks.
My question is– what do I need to do to get my data back on to my new machine from that backup?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Cheers!

Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine. Item 14 should be what you want.

  • Is the time machine backup of Mavericks accessible by Yosemite ?

I want to upgrade my macbook pro to Yosemite (I have mavericks installed). The Apple guy recommended me to backup. So If I backup through time machine ON my Mavericks macbook, Will I be able to restore it on Yosemite after installing it ?
I am asking this because time machine captures the "look" of Mavericks and Yosemite looks different. Will the (Mavericks)backup be compatible to Yosemite ?

Of course, when you do an upgrade OS X at the end of the installation of the new OS, you are asked whether to restore files and settings from the previous OS X  TM backup. So it is always compatible.

  • Problem moving Time Machine backup in Mavericks (missing "Ignore ownership on this volume")

In order to move Time Machine backup it is necessary to Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" at the bottom of the "Sharing & Permissions:" section is not checked.
However, this option has disappeared from Volume info window after upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.
Any idea how I can find this?
    Thank you.

Once you're in the TM interface you will see a basically normal Finder window (with a lot of weird graphics, hence its other name The Star Wars interface )
On the right of the screen is the timeline allowing you to move backward and forward in time. Once you find what you want you can select the files or folders and restore.
As in the normal Finder multiple selections are allowed. I suggest you play around with it a bit at first and try restoring a file or a few files or folders just to get a feel for it.
    good luck
    regards

  • What's The ETA On A Time Machine Backup After Mavericks Install?

Installed Mavericks and all is fine, albeit took forever to install, I updated from Mountain Lion.
The Time Machine backup is taking forever, over an hour and still "Preparing Backup",  any thoughts?
I re-mapped the HDD in time machine preferences, and since Mountain Lion killed acces to my WHS, I have an external HDD hooked directly to my MBPro via USB.
    Details:
    - MB Pro mid 2010
    - 4 GB Memory
    - WD 1TB External HDD hooked up to the MB Pro via USB
    Thoughts?
    Thanks.

Well, round 2 now....I fully realize time is dependent on the amount of data to back up, but given my backups are frequent this is a bit too long.
If they overwrite past backups that'll stink, but that's were redundency comes in on the users part.
I now realize I wasn't getting the 'new' icon look, so I turned time machine off and back on...now I got the "new" icon...So I will wait and see, it's been 30 minuntes so far and still "preparing backup".
    We'll see what happens.

  • Recovering Calendar files from Time Machine backups in Mavericks

I have somehow deleted all previous Calendars and entries prior to the day I set up iCloud. They have gone from iCloud also. This occurred after I tried to remove duplicates. Calendar entries after setting up iCloud are more or less OK but everything before that day has gone (except for birthdays and a few other entries).
Can I recover them from a previous (Mavericks) time-machine backup and if so how please?
I have looked for calendar files on my external backup HD but can't see anything recognisable.
Other posts on this topic seem to refer to previous operating systems.

I used the process outlined here successfuly just now:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudtm.html
I am running Mavericks. Things I learned or to clarify/amplify what he says (at the URL I just listed):
    * If you have partial data saved in Calendar now, I highly recommend you export and save it as an .ics file so you won't lose anything.
    * Make sure you close Calendar before trying to restore.
    * To restore Calendar files, go back to the date you want to restore in Time Machine, and in your home folder (or whatever you may have renamed it), go to Library > Calendar. Highlight ALL files in this folder. The Restore button should turn white in the bottom right of the Time Machine and hit that. It will move them all into your calendar.
    * Follow his procedure otherwise. When you import the old data into your newly created On My Mac version of your calendar, it will say there is a "new event" or message and ask you where you want to put it. That would be the newly created calendar you just set up chosen off the list. It's pretty obvious but his directions didn't say so I like to be explicit with details.
    * I found that calendars I had created since losing my old ones were not overwritten or lost when I followed the above procedure.

  • Time Machine backups delayed (Mavericks)

I have posted the same thread in the Time Capsule category a week ago but have had no replies. So I'm trying again here in Mavericks.
Since purchasing a new Time Capsule and updating to Mavericks from SL about three weeks ago, I've had an issue with Time Machine scheduled backups. Before setting up the TC I backed up to an external drive connected to my imac via USB. Now I use the TC for TM backups and as a router. The TC is connected to a Netgear router running in modem mode. My imac where I'm having the below TM issue, as well my ipad and iphone connect to the TC over wifi (for internet and TM backups).
Hourly TM backups start with a delay but there is no error or warning message to say there is a delay. I've read Pondini's FAQ and trouble shooting but cannot find this exact issue anywhere. I've done a full TM reset as per Pondini trouble shooting A4, as well as verifying backups as per A5, and also powering off and rebooting everything as per C19 (including hard reset of TC). None of this has changed anything.
Pondini says TM backups are scheduled to start exactly one hour after the start of the previous backup. But my backups start several minutes after the completion time of the previous backup (anything between 2 minutes and 25 minutes so far). Each time the scheduled time for the next backup passes without it starting and as a result the TM preferences start displaying the next scheduled backup an hour later (as if it just skipped one). But then the backup will start some time after the completion time of the last backup.
I will illustrate in an example with screenshots:
    1. At 20:04, the next backup is scheduled for 20:05
    2. At 20:06, the backup hasn't started so TM acts as if it has been skipped and shows next backup at 21.05
    3. But then at 20:24, the backup unexpectedly starts. As mentioned above, then timing is somewhat random in that in can be after 2 minutes or 20 or more. The only consistency is that it always starts after the completion time of the last backup.
    4. The backup has finished, it seems everything is fine (although I can't be sure). The completion time of the last backup is correct, and the next backup is scheduled for 1 hour after the last one started. But guess what... the wholem thing repeats itself again.
This issue makes me uneasy about the reliability of TM backups. I am also experiencing another issue with my TC which is linked to Airport Utility intermittenly showing "device not found". See my ongoing discussion about this issue here:https://discussions.apple.com/message/24339064?ac_cid=op123456#24339064
I have no idea whether these issues are related. Please note that the above issue with delayed TM backups is independent of the "device not found" issue i.e. the delays occur whether or not the TC is visible in Airport Utility. (When it is not visible/greyed out, both my wifi internet connection and TM backups still run).
    Grateful for your advice! Thanks.

  • Time Machine Backup OSX Mavericks

After upgrading to OSX Mavericks, i found that my time machine back up speed extremely slow, to a point where it takes more than 48hrs to back up 100GB stuff. I have tried formating the drive. it is a USB3 WD 1TB external hdd. Moreover, when i copy folders to and from my hard drive it has transfer speed of approximately 40mb/s.

Here is a trick that I found for OSX Lion that seems to work for Mavericks too.  Reboot your Mac in Safe Mode.  For those who didn't know how to do this (like me), start your Mac and as soon as you hear the dong sound, usually within a second or two, hold down the Shift key.  When the Apple logo appears, release the Shift key...again usually within a second or two after the dong.  Your Mac will now boot in Safe Mode.  It takes a little longer than a regular boot, so be patient.  After your Mac boots completely, reboot it.  You don't need to do anything except reboot...seriously.  Let it boot up as normal.  Then try your Time Machine back up again.  I am neither a computer engineer, nor a programmer, so I don't know why this worked, but it did for me...a full back up, 600 GB in about 6 hours.  Good luck.

  • What files are excluded from time machine backups in Mavericks?

    Is it mainly Cache files?
I had a report from Dr Light virus scanner that it had found a virus in my safari cache. To which I have had to reset safari to delete the cache. I am worried that time machine might have backed up the rouge file to my time machine.
    Thanks

Time Machine backs up those files that are needed to recover the system.
Swap, Trash and cache are not required to recover the system so they are not backed up.

  • How to restore a Time Machine Backup from ML to Mavericks

Due to a failed install of Mavericks, I had to do a clean install. How do I restore an iPhoto Library contained in a ML Time Machine backup to Mavericks iPhoto. I'm almost to the point of opening the iPhoto Library in Preview and saving the files and re-importing them.

I think what you are saying is you have a backup that was done on Mavericks and want to restore it to an installation of Mountain Lion, is that correct? If so no that will not work as you are finding out. If I am still not understanding please tell me what version of OS X is installed on the iMac (Lion, ML, Mavericks etc..) and what version OS X you created the TM backup with.

  • I am trying to install Mavericks on my McbookAir, but it won't install, saying that my hd is used for time machine backups. I have an external HD connected to my mbAir that I'm using for time machine.

2012 Macbk air, with OSX 10.8.5. See my question above. Mavericks won't install on my Air's HD, says that both the HD - AND - the external HD (which has a different name from the laptop HD) are used for time machine backups. I've deleted my time machine plists, restarted, repaired permissions, turned time machine off, repeatedly selected the external drive in time machine preferences. HELP. (Install went perfectly on my desktop Mac, which also has an external HD for time machine).

I need to add that the only place I have the "Backups.backupdb" folder is on my backup external disk, and it's not on my HD    :-(    . If it were, I'd delete it!

  • Unable to recover Mavericks via Time Machine on iMac (2011). I have one Time Machine backup from this week On new Time Capsule. I already attempted safe boot and NPRAM reset. Hard drive and permissions verified as ok.

Some more history - I'm not too techie so added everything in I thought might be significant!
    - Installed Mavericks on iMac in October 2013
    - experienced regular low memory issues - used Memory Clean app as a workaround
    - last week decided to upgrade installed memory from 4gb to 16gb. Faster loading but still running out of memory - just takes longer to do so.
    - also last week purchased 2gb Time Capsule (to back up 660gb on 1TB drive)
    - one successful Time Machine backup completed last weekend.
    - I decided to try and clear some space, tidy my folders, old music files,  delete duplicates etc (Not system files)
    - then tried out 'time machine restore' just to test it out. Deleted files and folders recovered ok using Time Machine menu (the one that looks like outta space)
    - yesterday, Avast Anti-Virus flagged virus detected (sorry, I didn't manage to capture details) and quarantined file, but I couldn't get any windows to respond so forced Mac to shutdown.
    - attempted regular reboot , system hanging on white/ apple symbol screen.
    -  attempted Safe reboot - reboot stalls at mess 'BootCacheControl: unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist no such file or directory.
(I don't know if this is significant)
    - attempt NPRAM reset, reboot hanging at Apple symbol still
    - attempted reboot into Disk Utility. HD drive verified ok. Permissions checked and Safari permissions fixed (only)
    - finally attempting restore from Time Machine Backup via Disk Utility. Stalls at 'select a backup source'. Menu is 'searching for Time Machine Backup....'
Nothing is listed, after a few mins machine just goes to sleep.
My Time Capsule and networks are all switched on. No idea what to try next!

Most of the problems like this that people report on this forum are due to bad "utilities" like Memory Clean and Avast.
Your Mac probably didn't have a virus. There has never been an OSX virus "in the wild". Third party antivirus software is of very dubious utility on Macs. Macs are not PCs. OSX has anti-malware protection built into it already.
Do you have any other third party "utilities" on your Mac, such as CleanMyMac or MacKeeper?
Is the RAM you installed the recommended type of RAM for your Mac?
Take a look at this page: Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
But your OS may be damaged beyond repair, or beyond what disk utility is able to repair.
In that case you have a few options:
There is a small chance that a (reputable) third part utility like Techtool Pro 7  may be able to fix your OS.
Try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
bite the bullet, boot into the recovery partition or internet recovery, and erase your HD, reinstall Mavericks from scratch, and start over. Your documents are probably still on your Time Machine Backup. I wouldn't reinstall the documents via a migration- you don't want to reinstall bad system files along with your documents- but you could copy them one by one back to your internal HD. And most importantly- don't reinstall any third party "utilites" like Memory Clean or Avast (or any other third-party antivirus software, for that matter).

  • How can I restore my old iTunes Time Machine backup after upgrading to Mavericks?

I previously had Snow Leopard, and am wondering how I can simply restore ONLY my iTunes library from my Time Machine backup, last made only a few days ago when I had Snow Leopard. However, I seem to be unable to access anything backed up before I installed Mavericks. Any help would be great, because I'd hate to have to struggle to locate 160GB of music manually.
    Many thanks!

Your choice really. Either way will work. Retaining the older backups gives you a way to restore older files. When I upgrade from 10.8 to 10.9, the backups continued without errors. Depending on what you upgraded from, in 10.8/9 you have the option to backup to 2 separate drives thus giving you some protection in case one drive fails. You can either copy the old backup to a new drive (Disk Utility/Restore seems to work best) or start a new one.
