Time Machine Backup Includes entire HDD on Bootcamp instead of Mac OSX only
I have put in a 500 GB HDD into my MBP 2008. I want to do my Time Machine backups on a 320GB Western Digital external HDD.
I got 250GB assigned to Mac OSX/ Snow Leopard and 250 GB assigned to Win 7 - using two partitions.
When I try to do a Time Machine Backup now, it always requires 500 GB (or 460GB to be exact) for that backup - so it wants to include the Win7 partition in the backup ?
Is there any other solution than buying a new, bigger HDD to solving that problem, so that my Time Machine backup won´t be larger than 250 GB ?

That 320 GB may be a bit small, depending on how much is actually on the 250 GB partition -- Time Machine usually needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up. See #1 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

Time Machine adds about 20% to the estimated size of the backup, for workspace on the backup volume, so it's trying to back up about 380 GB.
Is there any other solution than buying a new, bigger HDD to solving that problem, so that my Time Machine backup won´t be larger than 250 GB ?
If your Windoze partitions aren't formatted HFS+ (some variant of +Mac OS Extended),+ Time Machine can't back them up.
Take a look at +Time Machine Preferences > Options.+ If the partitions aren't listed in the exclusions box, click the plus sign and select them for exclusion.
While you're there, see what's shown for +Estimated size of full backup+ just below the exclusions box.

if you see the "Apple_Boot 650.0 MB" then you have the rescue partition.
I have just restored my machine from a Time Machine backup, and the Apple_Boot partition has dissapeared. -
I am out of space on my Macbook Air and have a Time Machine Backup. I want to complete reset my mac, but wonder if I can pick and choose what I restore to my computer? Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?
If you are using "Restore from Time Machine Backup" option from OS X Recovery, you can only choose from the broad categories presented.

To be clear, if you are asking if you can use the volume containing your Time Machine backup to store additional, non-Time Machine files, the short answer is yes.
It's not a good idea though, since the Time Machine backup will eventually fill all available space, after which it begins to remove old, "expired" backups to make room for newer ones. The presence of additional files doesn't change that fact, and Time Machine will not erase them, but you will encounter a dilemma should you want to store additional files on that volume when there is no remaining space. You will have to make room for them on your own, by deleting existing files. Furthermore, since Time Machine cannot back up its own volume, those additional files will not be backed up by Time Machine.
The easy solution for what you describe is to purchase additional external storage. External USB hard disk drives have become very inexpensive; about $55 will buy a perfectly suitable 1 TB drive.
You can also choose to replace your MacBook Air's internal storage with a larger capacity one. Look for a suitable replacement from OWC / MacSales:

That gets a little more expensive but it is the optimum solution. -
My MacBook w/ OSX 10.6.8 cannot access my external Time Machine Backup USB Drive. It says it is a Read Only drive. When I went to change permissions I found all pernissions were listed as "Custom" and I could not reset them to "Read Write". Any help would be appreciated.
This can be done easily with ethernet.
Please follow the instructions strictly.
To make it easier I want you to do this overnight so you can turn off all your current connection to the internet.
Just go to the airport fan in to the top right and turn airport off.
Get ethernet cable and connect the laptop to the TC lan port.. ie <-> ones.
Press and hold the reset on the TC for about 10sec. until the front led flashes rapidly.
Open the airport utility.. go to manual setup and change the wireless to off. (so other people around you cannot join your network of one).
Ignore all the errors.. they won't stop the backup working.
Go to the TM and reselect the backup target disk as the TC.
It should start after 2min and run through to completion.
That is it.. for a backup of many GB it might take a few hours.. so make sure the laptop has power plugged in and the sleep is off.. (on early ones I think this is needed but I am a late arrival to the scene).. sleep doesn't affect later OS. -
Problems with creating a Time Machine backup on external HDD

I tried to make a new Time Machine backup file on my external harddrive today.
Unfortunately it stopt after about 6 or 7 gb with the popup:
''the backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk''
I'm certain that the HDD (Western Digital 1Tb) was correctly formatted (Mac Os Extended (Journaled)). It's the same type as my internal harddrive.
I also have a Time Machine Buddy logfile. Maybe that will help in finding the problem.
Also noticable is that after the backup failure, I can't seem to restore or format the external HDD. Once I connect it to a regular pcc and remove and reinstall the driver, I can use it again.

My time machine backup (on external hdd) doesn't see my new internal HDD.
I just installed a new HDD and RAM in my mid-09 MBP. When I try and restore from a time machine backup on an external drive, I only get the option to install it on the other partition on that drive - my new internal drive doesn't even appear as an option. Could it be because the backup is from lion but my os disc is leopard?

Is it possible to transfer an time machine backup from an external hdd to a time capsule? I have changed the original 2tb time capsule hdd to a 3tb hdd because of loud sounds from the 2tb hdd. Now i want to transfer the backup from the (now external) 2tb hdd to the new 3tb hdd which is now in the time capsule. Could anybody help me?
Yes, it should be easy.. just copy the sparsebundle from the old 2TB plugged into your computer to the TC.
This will take a few hours maybe a lot more if the drive is near full.. use ethernet.. do not even dream of using wireless.. Do not plug the 2TB into the TC USB.. that is super slow.. plugged into your computer with a FW hard disk holder would be the ideal.. but USB is ok.

Saving old backups.. or simply start again.. a clean fresh backup is much more efficient. Put the 2TB drive in a draw.. if you haven't needed any files on it in 6months from now.. wipe it. -
A few months ago I partitioned my mac using BootCamp and successfully installed Windows and a few Windows-only programs (games). I never restored my mac from the Time Machine backup and now I would really like all of my files back on my mac. I am wondering if I insert the osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup, will that get rid of the partition I made for Windows? Will the Windows side of my hard drive stay in tact or will everything on that side get erased when I restore the mac side from the Time Machine backup. It was a HUUUUUUUGE pain to do the BootCamp partition and get everything Windows set up and I would really like to not have to do that all over again. I just want to make sure that if I insert the mac osx install disc and restore from Time Machine backup it will only affect the Mac partition, NOT the Windows partition.

Time Machine does not touch your BootCamp Windows.
It simply said ignores it completely.
Nonetheless, I am curious as to why you wanna restore a Time Machine backup.
Usually during partitioning with the BootCamp Assistant in OSX to make the Windows partition your OSX stays intact.

Aperture 3 - does Time Machine backup the entire library when you modify it
Since installing Aperture 3 and importing my iPhoto library, I've noticed that my daily Time Machine backups are now ~40GB. My Aperture library is 60GB, so I guess it can't be doing a full backup of it every day but I'm suspicious that it's Aperture related. Anyone know how I can see what's going on?
The only way to test a back up is to do a restore.
FWIW Time Machine does incremental back ups - i.e it backs up the changes - rather than doing a whole back up each time.

Restore Time machine backup from a stolen computer to a different Mac Pro
*My Mac Book Pro was stolen.* It had some Time Machine backups, but Time Machine had stopped working about 6 months before it was stolen. I had stopped using the USB drive since TM would never complete. (2 issues)
1. When I plugged in this USB backup disk to the Mac Pro just now, it asked me whether to use Time Machine with it. It told it no, ask me later so I could browse it first.
2. It looks like the old problem with Time Machine not backing up the stolen laptop shows up as a file called "2008-09-22.204132.inProgress". I am hoping that the backups previous to that one are okay. So far, browsing the files appears to me that my data is intact but perhaps spread across 40 folders.
So now, what should I do to retrieve the data I want?
A. Copy the data files and pictures manually without Time Machine? How do I know I will get the latest versions?
B. Use Time Machine with this disk and somehow ask TM to restore to a different machine? (Is that even possible?) (Will it merge the files into my user folders?)
C. Use Migration Assistant?
D. Copy and paste the entire file structure to a directory someplace and pull off the data as I need it?
*End result: I want my external hard disk wiped ASAP, and in the meantime I want my data files preserved.*
The old MacBook Pro definitely did not have Snow Leopard but the MacPro does to which I want to copy the data. It probably had Leopard. But honestly my user data is not necessary, just primarily the data, pictures, DVD projects, etc.

start Migration Assistant located in /Application/Utilies. it has an option to migrate your data and applications from a TM backup. migrate what you want. note that users will be migrated to new users so to access your old home directory you'll have to log out and log in as the migrated user.

I have read a number of articles about how to transfer a complete Time-Machine backup to a new (larger) hard disk-drive. Some of these articles are specifically for OSX10.6 users, which are not applicable to me since I am operating with OSX 10.5.8.
However, I have tried several times to use the Disk Utility 'Restore' function, dragging my old time-machine volume into the 'Source:' box and my new volume into the 'Destination:' box. This works, of sorts, BUT the newly created volume on the new larger hard disk-drive remains the same size as the original volume on the old Time-Machine HDD, with no apparent way of increasing the new volume's size. So I am not really any better off:
E.g. the total capacity of my new HDD is stated by 'Disk Utility' to be 465.8 GB, of which I'm told 228.2 GB is used for the Backups.backdb folder, but only 4.6 GB of free space is actually available. Yet under the 'Partition' tab of 'Disk Utility' it tells me that there is still 236.4 GB of available space.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue without upgrading to OSX 10.6?First, how did you prepare your new drive? See:
Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
If you plan to partition this new drive then be sure you create a larger partition for TM than your old volume.
Next, clone your old TM volume:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4.Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive. -

am just about to start using time machine to backup.
one question I have. I just wiped and redid my entire iTunes library and playlists content organization. A whole heap of work that I would like not to have to do again
my question is : When my iTunes is backed up (I will do a complete , not selective backup that obviously will include my current iTunes) will the backup be an exact complete copy of of the iTunes library, so that if I ever have to restore, the restored will have all my playlists contents organized as they are now ?

you might know this. TM will be backing up a Macbk pro which obviously , most of the time, is not connected to anything including an exterior HD to which it will be backed up. Does that matter if I designate once a week backup or something and make sure it's plugged n then ? just a bit confused on that one question.

Can I do a backup from Time Machine of only a certain hdd?
My system, 10.10.3, has an OS drive and a data drive where I keep my photo and docs. The data drive went bad and I'll be purchasing a new one.
I see instructions for recovering a whole system but I don't need that. I just need to place, from Time Machine, the contents of my now defunct data hdd.
How do I do that?
Thanks!!Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.

Does Time Machine backup an entire disk image?
Currently I am on Tiger. I have Leopard in my drawer and will install it when 10.5.1 is released.
I have a question about Time machine.
Currently I use Deja Vu to backup my entire startup disk Disk-A to another disk-B. I can swap these over as startup's if a problem occurs.
Can I do the same thing with time machine?

Steve.I'm assuming that your disk B is a bootable clone of disk A. If that's the case then, no, Time Machine doesn't do that. However, you can use your Leopard install disk to restore a bootable version of your system and all your files from Time Machine's backups. Time Machine has the advantage of being able to do that type of restore from previous dates and times, unlike a single clone. You can also use Time Machine to restore specific files that you have deleted, accidentally or otherwise, from your main drive.
I use both a bootable clone and Time Machine and consider them complementary backup solutions. BTW, 10.5.1 was released on the 15th.
