Time Machine backup not syncing after changed wifi network

I have an AirPort Extreme wireless router and have been backing up over my wifi network using an added hard drive on the USB port. I recently had to restore the AirPort Extreme and changed the password for the wireless network and now Time Machine wants to completely reformat the hard drive and start over.
Does anybody know how to bypass this and just continue to add to the current backups?

Well I can have a go at answering you questions
Is it necessary to upgrade to OSX Server if I wish to use the server a Time Machine target for Mabooks running Mountain Lion?
I'm not sure about this one as it didn't check before I upgraded my server to Mountain Lion but I would be suprised if a Lion Server (10.7.4) could not back up a Mountain Lion (10.8) client
If I do upgrade to OSX Server, is it also necessary to upgrade all the Macbooks to Mountain Lion?
No, I am running a mix of 10.8 and 10.7.4 clients with a 10.8 server and they all backup with Time Machine.
Is OSX Server stable enough to bother with at this time?
This is a very subjective area - my server is running well using Mountain Lion, it's not used heavily as it's mainly for backing up a few clients, running the built in wiki, web server, calendar and contacts.  It's running fine and I like the additions enough to put up with the bugs [single sign on / kerberos is the one impacting me].  However if you search here you can find other who are having many more issues. This one is a personal choice you'll have to make.
For the server app, you have to run the same version across the server and the client to use it, you can always use screen share to get to the server and run the server app directly on the server.  This is what I do when using a 10.7.4 client.
Hope this helps with you decisions.

Why is Time machine backup not working after Mavericks upgrade?

I had the same problem due to the Fire Wire port.  Apple tested it told me it is OK!, I tried a new cable, and have tested both ports on my back up device.  I find it strange that as soon as I installed Mavericks.  The drive does work using USB.  It could be a coincidence, I don't absolutely know at this point, my back up drive ports could stop working, but I doubt it!

  • Time Machine backups not available after Lion upgrade

I just upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion a week ago. Today I went to my Time Machine (backups on a Time Capsule), and can't access old files. Past dates are shown in purple, with dates since the Lion update in the usual gray. However, none of them show any files. Any ideas?

  • Time Machine backup grew extremely after changing permissions

    Hello Forum:
I love my iMac and I really like Time Machine. I have an external Western Digital HD for backup ("My Book"), which works quite well.
Today I had to change the permissions of a very large folder (100 GByte) and all its contents and files (The reason was, that I needed to grant another user of my iMac access to the files).
The problem now is, that TM wants to backup all these folders and files and there is not enough space on the external HD. The contents of the files have not changed, just the permissions. I agree, that in principle the behavior of TM is fine, because something has changed, so the changes need to be backed up, and I would not mind (or even have recognized what was going on), if there was enough space on the external HD.
Is there anyway, how I can prevent TM from backing up these files and folders unless the contents changes? E.g. could I change the permissions also on the external HD and "fool" TM, so that it does not recognize any changes? Or any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Hinrich

I agree with you totally that simpler is better with backups, and I don't fault Apple for designing TM in the way it is. But to set the record clear, TM already does use hard links so it really should only be necessary to store another copy of the file if the content changes.
I did not know that. Thanks for the info.
Could it be a security thing? Suppose someone goes the other way, reducing the permissions so to speak. Would it be possible for someone else to access the backup with the earlier permissions?
As I noted, simpler is better. Many of us still have the occasional hiccup that results in a failed backup which is easily fixed by making one manually or simple waiting for the next one, but that was my point.
When all the bugs are out of TM, then and only then would it be proper to start diddling with it

  • Time Machine backup not working after Mountain Lion Install

Oh my.  It seems that Mountain Lion and Lion Server are different species and cannot be interbred!  Is this really true?
I am running OSX Lion Server on a late 2009 iMac with the main purpose of allowing the MacBook Pros in the house (both running Lion 10.7.4) to wirelessly back up to Time Machine.  All has gone well until I upgraded one of the MacBooks to Mountain Lion.  Now it appears that Time Machine via the server is no longer available on that MacBook.  Also, the Server Admin app is also disabled.
    My questions are:
Is it necessary to upgrade to OSX Server if I wish to use the server a Time Machine target for Mabooks running Mountain Lion?
If I do upgrade to OSX Server, is it also necessary to upgrade all the Macbooks to Mountain Lion?
Is OSX Server stable enough to bother with at this time?
Thanks in advance for your replies!

  • Time Machine backups only work after restart

    Hi
Getting frustrated as Time Machine backups only work after a restart. Work for a few hours and then get stuck with Backing up: XXMB of XXGB. I have left it on this for many hours ie overnight without completion
    I have a Mid 2014 MBP 13 in running 10.10.2
I backup onto an external USB via a hub.
Things I have tried with review of Pondini great site which has helped with different TM backup problems.
Disk permissions and repair of SSD on MBP (were errors but did not solve issue)
    Direct USB connection
    Backup via Airport Extreme
    Re-index spotlight
    Reformat USB disk
    New USB disk!
Below is log (backupd filtered) of latest backup attempts including final completed occuring after restart.
    Any help gratefully received

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1295 ' 0.5 0.25 50 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 6 6 5 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1536 450 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144     Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

    Hi,
I have gone from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, and I have a concern that my Time Machine backup now does not show any of my emails since the upgrade.
Is this by design or has something more sinister occured?
    Gavin.

    Hi,
No, thats the point the only email visible is from after the upgrade a week ago.
My emails on this computer go back over a year, but I cannot seem to see them.

  • Time Machine backups slowing down after 25 days

I am experiencing a peculiar kind of behaviour from Time Machine under
Mountain Lion (10.8.2). In the multiple threads on Time Machine issues,
I could not find this exact problem described so I am wondering if
anyone else has seen the same thing or even has a solution.
Like for many others, the basic symptom is that Time Machine becomes
extremely slow. In my case this always happens about 25 days after the
last reboot. I am using a Mid 2010 27-inch IMAC and a Mid 2010 Mac Pro,
both connected to a Time Capsule via ethernet. Both are showing the
    same behaviour.
Originally I was letting Time Machine do its regular hourly backups,
this has now been changed to twice a day using TimeMachineEditor. The
change has made no difference, backups are still getting slow after
25 days. This is accompanied by kernel_task gradually ramping up
its CPU usage, from below a percent to several percent.
Here are the backupd entries from a "normal" backup:
This takes 3-4 min, which I find tolerable - although I
am always surprised by the rather large number of files that
are backed up even if the machine has remained idle:

I have now rebooted the machine, and things are back to normal.
In about 25 days, I fully expect that things will start to grind to
a halt again. On the MacPro, which has now been running for 16
days, things should be fine for another 9-10 days.

These are the messages from the first slow backup. This one was only marginally slower than a normal backup, but a sure sign that things were going awry nonetheless:

  • Why does power nap time machine backup not work on my August 2012 macbook pro retina?

Hello. I got a MacBook Pro with retina display in August of this year 2012. I have done the SMC ? firmware update and I have 10.8.2 installed on my machine. Power nap still doesn't seem to work. I have the button in energy saver preferences and I have clicked it so it looks like power nap should work. When I am running Time Machine backup with the time capsule and I close the lid (plugged into power) it appears that no progress is made when I reopen the lid. I have closed the lid with activity monitor running and with network displayed. When I reopen the lid it may take up to one minutes to come out of sleep. When it does come out  of sleep I can see that there has been no network traffic.  Eventually, time machine backup resumes and I can see several megabytes per second. When I closed the lid overnight, just to make sure backup didn't restart after lid closing, I saw that no progress had been made in backup when I reopened the lid.
What options are left if I already have 10.8.2 and I have done the required firmware?  One person has mentioned a clean install but I really don't like to have to reenter all the different passwords and all the different preferences again unless that's absolutely necessary. Are there any other options left to try before a clean install?
One other bit of information.  I have filevault turned on; however, it looks like others have a working power nap even with file vault enabled.  If this is not an option, the power nap button should be grayed out when the machine is in filevault.
    Thank you for any help.

Yeah I still have the same problem BTW; it still does not work.
The second I open the lid and take it out of sleep mode, it starts to backup automagically, but when it's sleeping EVEN when it's connected to AC power, TM backups do NOT work to my OS X Server.
I don't understand what the problem is here.
I didn't before but I do have FileVault turned on now -- should that make a difference?
In either situation it didn't work, but now that I think about it, I could understand why it wouldn't backup while asleep.  Apparently the encrypted volume will stay encrypted during sleep and even at the lock screen; it's not until you open the lid and log in from the lock screen that it will unlock the encrypted boot volume.
But even still, I did *not* have FV turned on before, and this still did not work.
Is there some third party solution that can do what I want this to do?
    Here's my use case:
1.) I have a mac mini at home that I use when I'm at home; it runs OS X server.app (bought and paid for) and has TM server turned on.
2.) I have a laptop that I mainly use at work and I don't use at all when I come home (ie. when I'm ready to head home for the day I close the lid and don't open it until I'm back at work the next day, but the laptop does come home with me every day).
What I want to have happen is this:
1.) The minute my laptop enters my home wifi lan (even though it's still asleep with lid closed) I want it to automatically backup the boot drive.
I thought that's what Power Nap was supposed to do, but then I found out that in order for this to work, you have to be connected to AC power; so then I tried that -- ie. every day I come home, I put my laptop in a docking station that has AC power, but TM backups while lid closed / sleeping STILL do not occur!
Thanks for your help everyone...Looking forward to a solution that works.
    EDIT:
    I found this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4158709
"It looks like Power Nap doesn't perform Time Capsule backups when the MacBook Air screen is closed."
So apparently that is yet *another* requirement to get powernap working.  The lid can not be closed.
What is the difference between sleep with lid open and sleep with lid closed!?

  • Time Machine does not work after installing mavericks

After I installed maverick on my imac, my time machine backups don't work anymore!!!!
I have a normal portable HDD attached to my Imac with time capsule backup from before mavericks was installed.
I also has a Buffalo NAS as a second Time Machine Backup.
TIme capsule does not recognise my Buffalo NAS and tells me that it is not available.  It has previous backups from Mountain Lion for sure!
My portable HDD keeps saying "Preparing for backup" for eternity.
Please, APPLE, what is going on with mavericks?  Regretted upgrading.
My backup is 31 days behind because of this!  Unacceptable!
But what is strange is that I can connect to my portable HDD and Buffalo NAS as a drive.   What I have been doing is to copy and paste the important stuff into the drives.  But it really defeats the purpose of time machine, right?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Will Time Machine backup still exist after fresh install of Lion?

Hi all. I have a MacBook Pro and I've come to the conclusion that I need to do a fresh installation to solve several problems I've been having. My question involves my Time Machine backup. I have a complete, current backup on a USB drive.
After I do the fresh installation, rather than copy everything from the backup (and possibly bringing the problems with it) I would like to just selectively restore certain things. I know how to do all this.
The question I have is, after I set up my new system, what will happen if I activate Time Machine and point it to the same USB drive that has my current backup? Will it erase the backup, or will it create a new backup alongside the old one (there's plenty of room on the drive) or will it simply append the backup, treating it just like a new checkpoint in the incremental backup? I guess I'm hoping for the third option, because then I would be able to go back into Time Machine in case I forget something or want to copy something from my old system, even after I finish setting up the new one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you erase a drive, it gets a new UUID (Universally Unique IDentifier).  That's what OSX uses to keep track of drives, not their names.  So it's treated as a different disk.
If you do a full system restore, or use either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to transfer the data from your backups, that leaves a "trail" that Time Machine uses to figure out what's happened, and "associate" the "new" drive with the old backups.  The next backup will be only an "incremental" one, of what's new or changed, and the new and old backups will all be treated as if they'd been done from the "new" drive.
However, if you restore things "piecemeal," there's no trail.  Time Machine will make a new, full backup of the "new" drive.  You can still see and restore from the "old" ones, via the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
But if you use the exact same short user names (home folder names), then you may be able to force Time Machine to "associate" the "new" drive with the old backups.  See #B6 in the Troubleshooting article for instructions.

  • Time Machine Backup or Sync??

Curious... does Time Machine backup everything each time it runs? Or can it just backup the difference? I.E sync and back up on the changes?
Also - is there a way to select just want you want to back up? I am thinking I would like to back up my iPhoto and iTunes library (and perhaps my documents folder) only.
I have never really played with Time Machine... only once to great a single backup - so not sure if it can do what I would like.
    Cheers,
    Chris

The first backup copies the entire contents of your system. Subsequently, only additions & changes are copied.

You can omit things, but Time Machine is designed to protect your entire system -- OSX, apps, settings, preferences, email, etc. As long as there's room on your TM drive, there's no reason not to do that.

  • External hard drive time machine backups not mounting

I have used Seagate 500.11 external hard drive as a backup location for the time machine for over two years. I just got a message that it had not updated in over thirty days.  It is not listed on FInder, but it is listed on the disc utility.  The Time machine backups  are grayed out on the disc utility screen and cannot be mounted, even after the repair and verification tests said that their volumes were ok.  What should I do?

Time Machine does not create bootable clones. It does not even create a bootable backup. If that's what you prefer then do not use Time Machine.
If you use Time Machine then you must allocate at least twice as much space for the backups than the capacity of the drive you are backing up. A 2 TB backup drive would be suitable for a 1 TB main drive or smaller.
If you plan to create a bootable backup, then partition the backup drive with one partition the size required for the clone. Then use the other partition for you additional storage neeeds.
