Time Machine Backup of iPhoto Library 5 gigabytes smaller!?!?

Thankfully I've not yet had to rely on my time machine backup. I just delved into the "latest" folder within my backup and find that my iphoto library is 5 gigabytes less in there than on my HD.
Shouldn't the latest folder be the...ya know....latest? How is it shaving 5gig off the library size?
I've pulled that library out of the backup to my HD and opened it. Nothing appears to be missing but it is reporting 5gig less. I'm freaked out and about to not use Time Machine as my backup.
Anyone know what's going on here?
Cheers,
John

I think that helps...let me be a bit more specific.
I'm using a USB 2.0 HD attached directly to my Mac. I've backed up my iMac to this drive using time machine.
I was planning on wiping the machine and thought I'd just check that my 5 years of photos are backedup properly. Rather than opening TM I navigated via the finder to my backup drive and opened the "latest" folder and the dug down through the file structure to my iphoto library. It was here that I noticed the filesize to be 5 gig less.
I thought perhaps it was misreading it and dragged the iphoto library from the USB HD copying it to my desktop. It consistently reads 5gig less, than my regular iPhoto Library.
Opening the two libraries in iTunes they appear the same....of course I haven't paged through all 16,000 some odd photos....
Is this what you understood me to be saying, Barry?
Cheers!
John

  • IMac 20-inch on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, my photos from my iphoto library have been deleted. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine, help please.

I have an imac 20-inch Late 2006 model on OSX 10.7.4 running iphoto 11, somehow the application ccleaner has deleted my photos from my iphoto library. I have time machine but the iphoto library file is missing when I access time machine.
To restore photos I have followed the steps below
    Quit iPhoto.
    Connect your Time Machine drive.
In the Finder, open the folder containing your iPhoto Library. Unless you've moved your iPhoto Library, it can be found in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.
Enter Time Machine.  (Time Machine can be found in the Dock or in the /Applications folder.)
Choose your desired backup. The timeline on the right side of the screen displays a purple tick mark for each of the backups stored on your Time Machine drive.
Select the iPhoto library you would like to restore, and click the Restore button.
I dont get the option in step 6 as I dont have an iphoto library file to choose? Does anyone know why?

    Hi Barry
Thanks but as mentioned all is intact, even at step 3 I can see the current library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library which has no photos, but when I access time machine any point before the NOW option the iphoto library in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library is missing from the finder window.
As you can see here it is
and now its gone. I have no explanantion.
How do I go about moving this question as you suggested.

I entered Iphoto for my user and only photo up until 2012 were in the library.  I thought the restore would do the incremental Time Machine backups too.....

  • Time Machine and Accessing iPhoto library on an external HD

    Hi
I am new to Time Machine.  I didn't see a community for it, so I am posting here.
I have TIme Machine set to backup to an external HD (Clickfree).
When I check on the iphoto library stored on the HD for the TIme Machine, I am unable to open the library.
How do I confirm that my iphoto library is being properly backed up by time machine?
Will it not open because iphoto is not installed on the external HD with the Time Machine backup?
    Thanks
    A

Time Machine provides a "versioned backup" of your files. Yes, it does provide a backup through time of your photos. You can restore your photos through the Time Machine interface on your Mac.
Obviously, if the drive on your Mac dies, then, you won't be able to access your TM backup until you repair your Mac. Restoring from your TM backup could take hours.
It is recommended that in addition to TM you perform a bootable cloned backup of the HD in your Mac using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to an external drive. Booting up from your cloned drive gets your Mac up and running within minutes.

  • Aperture 3 - does Time Machine backup the entire library when you modify it

Since installing Aperture 3 and importing my iPhoto library, I've noticed that my daily Time Machine backups are now ~40GB. My Aperture library is 60GB, so I guess it can't be doing a full backup of it every day but I'm suspicious that it's Aperture related. Anyone know how I can see what's going on?

The only way to test a back up is to do a restore.
FWIW Time Machine does incremental back ups - i.e it backs up the changes - rather than doing a whole back up each time.
There's a Time Machine forum here
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1342
with some very knowledgeable people posting on it.

  • HT201250 Every time I add/delete music to itunes, does time machine backup my entire library?  If so can I limit backup just to added music?

Usimg time machine-every time I add/delete music in itunes library does time machine backup entire file? If so,an I set it up to just backup added music?

It shouldn't be backing up the whole thing again, just the changes.

  • Time Machine backup of iPhoto

Can anyone tell me if my iMac, when using Time Machine, to backup my system onto an external hard drive, completely backs up iPhoto including the iPhoto Library?   I see it backs up iPhoto.app but not sure if this includes all iPhoto Libary as well?   Not very good at Mac stuff.   Appreciate any help.

Yes.  To test it go to your Pictures folder, select the Library and enter Time Machine.  Go back to a date and you'll see the library in the Pictures folder for that date.
You can restore the latest backup copy while selecting Keep Both in this window
so you don't overwrite your current library.  Then open the restored library to test it and if satisfactory you can close iPhoto, delete the restored library and continue using your current library.
    Happy Holidays

  • Time Machine Backup and iPhoto

I have backed up my iMac onto an external hard drive via time machine. I want to transfer my photos from iphoto onto my macbook pro. I already transfered my music by plugging the hard drive into my macbook, opening the hard drive folder, opening the itunes folder and then dragging and dropping music onto my computer. I wanted to do this with my photos from iphoto...but I can't find them in any folders! Did they backup at all?? I'm kind of freaked out because my iMac isn't turning on and its going to be a while before I can get it fixed. I have heard about using the migrant assistant but I'm afraid it will transfer everything from my iMac. All I want are my photos! Is there a way to use migrant assistant and select what I want??

I finally found the iPhoto Library path,/Users/name/Pictures/iPhoto Library but all that does is take me back to the iPhoto application. If I don't want to/for for some reason can't use iPhoto, how do I get to the images?
If TM is working and backing up the Pictures folder, then should I assume it's backing up iPhoto as well? And if so, is it in the .backupdb folder with everything else? Then why can't I see/open those individual images? Adding iCloud just makes more confusing.
I still hold to the old fashioned idea that the data I create is mine and that I should be able to find it (easily) and control where it goes and what is done with it.

  • How do I move photos from Time Machine backup to iPhoto in new Mac?

A friend has been backing up his very old Mac with an external drive.  I find lots of pages about move/copy TO external drive but need to find a correct way to move them from the backup drive to iPhoto on the new Mac.

You do not "move" files from a TM backiup - you restore tehm using the TM program - launch TM and go to the time you want to restore from, select the iPhoto library and click restore

  • Lost events after Time machine restore of IPhoto library.

My external hard drive failed. On it was my primary iPhoto library.  My motto has been "In Time Machine I trust."  I restored the contents of the external drive on to another external drive and the last month and a half of events are empty.  The events were restored with file names etc, but no photos only a grey exclimation mark.  I looked in the original folder and found those events do not have a folder. How did the IPhoto "database" get backed up , but not the contents?

Check inside the iPhoto Library package in the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder or the Originals (iPhoto 09 or earlier) folder to see if their subfolders actually are empty or do contain the original files.  DO NOT RENAME, DELETE OR MOVE ANY ITEM INSIDE THE PACKAGE USING THE FINDER.
If the original files are there apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • First Time Machine Backup to big need to make smaller

I am having some issues I could do with an opinion on. I ran time machine last night for the first time and it backed up my main HD(450GB used) and a secondary HD(450GB used) I am now very tight on space on my Time Machine Back Up HD (900GB used on a 1TB internal drive)
I shouldn't have had the secondary HD backed up I didn't set the preferences pane correct.
I want to do a new backup of Main HD tonight, what's the best procedure?
Reformat the Time Machine Back Up HD? and start again? or is there away to tell time machine to delete the secondary HD backup content? Or do I do what looks obvious and go into the Time Machined Back Up HD and just delete the secondary HD folder?
I have done some stupid things over the weekend with my install and this one I want get right!

Reformatting will let you start from scratch, but trashing may well achieve same objective (up to you I guess which you prefer). What you might want to look into in the future with Time Machine is to exclude elements (via options in TM prefs) from backups (e.g. other disk vols or applications) this will greatly reduce the size of TM backups created.

  • 2nd External Drive - how to restore from Time Machine backup?

I have had Time Machine configured to back up my photos and videos on an external drive. My Time Machine backup is a separate drive attached to my MacBook by FireWire. I have Leopard OS. I have in the past successfully retrieved deleted photos from the Time Machine backups using iPhoto.
Now, unfortunately, the external drive with the photos and videos has developed a problem (possibly power-related) so that my MacBook no longer recognizes that drive. Obviously, this means that iPhoto can't find/open that photo library. Which means that iPhoto can't access the backup via Time Machine. Help! The photos must surely be on the Time Machine backup but I can't figure out any way to retrieve them.

    callipygia600,
This one's easy. Purchase a new drive to replace the one that went "belly up." Format (erase) it using Mac OS Extended, and give the volume that will be created the exact same name as the bad drive. Navigate into the new (empty) volume in the Finder, then open Time Machine from the Dock.
You should be able to navigate "back in time" and see the backed up contents. Select everything you see, and click "Restore." It will all be restored to your new external drive. The key is to use the same name for the new drive.
In the meantime, your backup can be accessed in the Finder if necessary. Using the Finder, navigate into the "Backups.backupdb" folder on the backup drive, then into the latest backup. You will see one folder named for your startup disk, and another named for your secondary/external volume. Within that second folder you will find the items that were stored on the bad drive. You can safely copy these to another volume using the Finder, but do not attempt to move or modify them otherwise (do what you like with the copies).

  • Aperture 3 Crashed; Can't relocate Masters despite time machine backup

I recently had a major crash of my OS system 10.6.8.  Not sure what happened, but essentially had to rebuild the directory with Diskwarrior.  When I tried to open Aperture 3, I received an error message and the inability to open Aperture.  After searching through the forums and the internet I essentially reinstalled Aperture 3 with the trial version and updated it to the most recent version.  My plugins (Nik Software) are no longer in Aperture as I thought this might have been part of the problem.  Nonetheless, I am missing a good deal of my projects from 2011.  I get the YELLOW TRIANGLE and the message that the master is not there.  So, I have rebuilt the database library (using command-option) and now Aperture is reporting that the images in those projects never existed.  NOW, I have fortunately been using time machine to backup regularly.  However, when I go back to a recent backup and restore of the Aperture library, those projects are still missing!
I am going insane thinking about this pictures and the missing data.  Shouldn't Time Machine saved the all the files prior to the crash?  Is there some place/other locations that I should be RESTORING besides the Aperture Library?
I look forward to hearing from you guys and everyone's suggestions, because I am driving myself crazy!

    thanks for the reply Frank:
Masters.  I do not know.  I left it as the default.  I assume that means managed?
Error message was the LONG error code with the jist of it being related to what sounds like a PLUGIN error. I don't have the EXACT coding right now as I am not home.  I've googled the code +/- other stuff on it and according to discussions here and elsewhere (albeit all archived), it looks like it was related to my plugins.
as far as the restore is concerned, I am POSITIVE that the restored library was the NEW library not the original.  But keep in mind, Time Machine only lets me restore the backup to the exact place where the file was before.  I am just worried that somehow Time Machine backup hosed my Aperture library somewhere along the way.  This is why I was wondering if there is something else I need to restore with my time machine backup besides the library file/database itself?
    Thanks for the quick reply.

  • Looking at external HD for Time machine backup and for XP OS?

Bought a 24" iMac desktop with a 500 GB HD and am going to be running up to Best Buy to snag a Western Digital external My Book 750 GB HD. Mainly this external is for Time Machine backup, photos, iTunes library, etc. but I'd like to fire up boot camp and install Windows XP OS. Question is, can I install the XP OS on the external HD so I don't have to divide and possibly mess up my internal Mac HD? Also, when I do install XP OS, how much space for a partition? XP will be mainly for just a few PC games that are PC only like Company of Heroes.

    Hi Saius,
    yeah, the more the better...
BootCamp requires the use of XP with SP2. Without SP2 (SP1 or earlier) it either does not install or if installed can produce some odd errors.
If you have access to a Windows XP PC you can try these instructions to slipstream the SP2 together with your 'old' XP CD to a new XP SP2 CD.
    http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxpsp2slipstream.asp
Before spending some unneccessary dollars might be worth trying.
It's not very difficult to do this (done it myself some years back).
Also it is a good idea to use your external HD and make a bootable clone of your OSX volume using either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
That way in case something goes wrong, you can easily revert back.
Personally I would not use Time Machine for that task.
Have Fun and thanks for the star.

  • No Photos after Restore from Time Machine Backup

    Hi,
    the following happened:
    - accidentally marked all pictures and moved them to one event which led to me having only one single event with 11,000 pics in it
    - Undo did not work, iPhoto crashed
    - Entered time machine, restored latest iPhoto Library which I am sure of it worked
    - After starting the restored iPhoto library it tells me that it is rebuilding the thumbnail cache
    - It then shows that I have 11,000 pics, I have all albums and events, but I do not see any pics. Only attention marks.
    - The library file has the full size (24,X GB)
Any advise how to get the pics back? I use the latest version of iPhoto, including todays update.
    Thanks,
    Chris

I solved this - it was actually not an iPhoto problem, more a Time Machine back up file issue.
