Time Machine backup on Lacie-CloudBox

I am doing backup via Time machine on a Lacie-CloudBox (network drive). The backup folder is empty but there is instead a .sparsebundle file (ca 900GB). Time Machine reports that backups are being done normally. Why is backup folder empty? Thx

Hi, I'm having the same problem. I have recently bought a Cloudbox 2TB. When TimeMachine has done the initial backup, it says that the backup was done succesfully, but when I take a look on the Cloudbox all I can find is a .sparsebundle file and TimeMachine prompting that the sparsebundle is already in use...
I'm guessing that there must be a compability problem since OSX Mavericks because the packaging of the Cloudbox states that it's TimeMachine compatible.
My Cloudbox came with no software, however the LaCie-website provides 2 back-up programs (Win and OSX). I already have tried the Windows one (Genie Timeline) and it works like a charm (who knew huh!). I guess I will trie the LaCie suggested software for OSX now to backup to the Cloudbox and keep TimeMachine do backups to my USB connected external hard drive.
Let's hope we get it working with OSX Yosemite...

  • 6th Generation Airport Extreme Freezing During Time Machine Backups using LaCie 1TB Hard Drive

I recently upgraded from a 4th generation Airport Extreme (short, dual band n) to a new 6th generation Airport Extreme (tall, dual-band ac) in the hopes of having quicker backups and better WiFi performance (I also just got a 13" retina MacBook Pro).
The upgrade has gone poorly, to say the least. Initially, I set up the new Airport Extreme as I had for the old one. Then I plugged in the same hard drive I was using (a LaCie 1 TB d2 Quadra USB2 drive that I bought in June of 2009). I decided to setup my wife's Time Machine backup first (she has a 2010 MacBook Air). I removed the "old" disk (the one associated with the old base station) from her Time Machine configuration, and set up her Time Machine configuration to backup to the same disk on the new Airport Extreme. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it picked up her existing Time Machine backup and incrementally synchronized to it (the backup size was about 300 MB). A few days later, she warned me that Time Machine told her that backups were not working. When I went to look, it was indeed failing.
I tried a few things that didn't work, and I suspected that maybe the backup "transfer" hadn't gone so smoothly as it seemed, so I decided to erase the drive using Disk Utility and start the backup over again. To my disappointment, I found that the backup got about 200MB-1.5GB into the backup and "froze." I left it overnight, and it was at exactly the same place the next morning. The light on the disk connected to the Airport Extreme flashed constantly all the time, and I could hear it spinning, but nothing happened at all.
When I tried to stop the backup, it took a very long time. In the logs, I would see a message like this (this log is from my machine, not my wife's, but it looks the same):
11/19/13 9:40:59.276 PM com.apple.backupd[93334]: Forcing deep traversal on source: "***-mpbr" (device: /dev/disk0s2 mount: '/' fsUUID: 7356274E-D28F-3BC0-9CA8-7F1AA21830B4 eventDBUUID: 99941F9A-AD5F-4FAF-94D2-701C94CA9581)

    11/19/13 10:00:15.103 PM com.apple.backupd[93334]: Cancellation timed out - exiting
Looking at the Airport Extreme in Finder, I saw that it got stuck, either "Connected as" me, or "Connecting...". The Airport Extreme wouldn't respond to the "Disconnect" or "Connect As..." buttons (depending on the context), and the eject button for the Airport Extreme itself in the sidebar was also unresponsive. Eventually, after 2+ minutes, I got a dialog saying "Couldn't connect to [my base station name]" with instructions to "check its IP" and contact my system administrator if the problem persists. During this time, Finder can seem frozen and unstable.
Through all of the above, the hard disk kept spinning and the light flashed constantly. The drive was warm to the touch in the morning.
I also found that when all this happened, I was unable to connect to the Airport device using Airport Utility. I I couldn't administer it, but the Internet continued to work for all connected devices. Unplugging the disk and plugging it back in worked immediately to bring the system back to a working state. I didn;t even have to power-cycle or reset the Airport Extreme.
I tried a number of things to correct this behavior:
Disabled Time Machine, removed disk, restarted machine, reconfigured Time Machine, and retried.
Tried backup on my 13" Retina MacBook Pro and my wife's MacBook Air.
I actually tried with TWO new 6th Generation Airport Extremes. The first one was a refurbished one. I returned it to Apple and purchased a brand new one. Both of them exhibited the behavior I described above.
    Workaround:
Finally, I switched the drive out for a spare that I have (an older Western Digital MyBook and used it for a backup. This drive "Just worked."
So, I have switched to that for backup for now, and re-purposed the LaCie as a drive that I use for making periodic images of my hard drive using SuperDuper. The drive seems to work perfectly (and worked perfectly for several years with older Airport Extreme base stations), so I can only assume there's a bug in the USB driver of the current 6th-generation Airport Extreme.
I hope this helps someone else who's as confused as I was. If anyone has had a similar experience, I would very much like to read about it. I will be reporting this problem to apple right after I post this topic. Please do the same if you experience this issue.

As Bob says, backing-up that way isn't supported.
It's also unreliable. It may work for a while, but this forum, and the Time Machine forums, have many, many posts like this:
*"I've been backing-up via an Airport Extreme for* <some number of days, weeks, or months> *and all of a sudden my backups are corrupted beyond repair."*
In my case, it's happened about 4 times in a year. And that's with a desktop Mac, about 12 feet from the Airport, with the exact same hardware in exactly the same place and no interference.
It is very convenient, especially with laptops. If you want to take the risk, see [Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Airport.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
But do yourself a LARGE favor and take the prominent advice to keep secondary backups, and update them frequently. Sooner or later, you're probably going to need them.

    no.

  • How can i restore my mac book pro using a lacie time machine backup

I just replaced the hard drive on my mac with a larger memory one. How do I restore my mac as it was previously from a time machine backup on a lacie external hard drive?

Read about all the options that are available:

    Ciao.

  • I have a brand new external hard drive (the Lacie Porsche p9230.) Why do all my attempts to do a time machine backup stall? (usually immediately)

I have a brand new 3T external hard drive (the Lacie Porsche p9230.) I manually backed up several big files from my computer ok, but all attempts to do a time machine backup just stall, usually after only a few K are backed up.  hours go by, no progress.
The first time, it did 3 gigs in just a couple minutes, it then got to about 9 gigs, then nothing for 2 hours.   all subsequent attempts have done merely a few k, or megabytes, then all just stopped, still appearing as if they are proceeding, but with no results over a long time.
It could indeed be the hard drive on my computer itself, but aside from this the computer functions normally, though slow (it's old, 2009.)
As stated. I WAS able to manually back up a folder exceeding 250 gigs in size, and then another of about 14 gigs.
So, why can I nt do a time machine backup, effectively?

All is not lost yet. Lets take it from the begining. By default, the OS is set to mount and drive plugged in. And for the most part it does work. If you haven't already done so, pop open the external case and make sure all of your cables are well seated.
    Next
    Plug in the drive.
    Fire up Disk Utility
In the window pane on the left-hand side, select the drive (selection with the size information of the drive ie - 232.9GB WDC WD2500. . . .)
Click on volume format and make sure Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is selected
    Click on the Erase button
After a couple of minutes is should be done and mounted on the desktop
You can also use Apple System Profiler as a troubleshooting tool. Fire it up and select Firewire from the selections. This will bring up a list of all of the devices it can discover and talk to. If your drive is there and working, it should come up with the drive information such as size, manufactor, etc.

  • Back up and access problems on MacBook Pro 15 2.2Ghz Yosemite 10.10.2 cannot finish time machine backup on My Passport for Mac, and cannot recognize LaCie quadra H2

New MacBook Retina Pro 15.4 inch with 2.2 Ghz and running Yosemite 10.10.2 will not recognize LaCie Quadra H2 disk. Also will not complete Time Machine Backup onto My Passport for Mac which it does recognize. Plenty of disc space both externals.

If you choose to use garbage such as "Intego VirusBarrier" you are going to need more memory, a lot more. I suggest you uninstall it according to its instructions, and evaluate your Mac's performance without burdening it with completely useless junk. As long as Intego remains active, your Mac will have few resources remaining to do anything else.
Using Intego's "Virus Barrier" and "Net Barrier" products on a brand new Mac containing nothing but one minimally configured user account resulted in performance degradation so severe that it became nearly unusable. No knowledgeable Mac user would consider using it even remotely tolerable.
Intego should only be uninstalled using the uninstaller included with it. Don't use anything else. A successful uninstallation will result in the following:
After that, restart your Mac. Other Intego components will remain but they will be inert and will not affect your Mac's operation.

  • Lacie 1TB external HDD recently stopped doing Time Machine backups. Disk Utility recommends that the disk needs to be repaired.

I've been using my Lacie 1TB external HDD for my Time Machine backups for quite sometime. Its never given me any problems until now.
It recently stopped doing the backups, so I checked Disk Utility and it recommended that I repair the disk. How long does it take for Disk Utility to repair a 1TB external HDD?
    Other things to consider:
    - Cant find the disk in the Finder, I used to be able to do that before.
    - When I tried to go a Time Machine backup, it said the disk was not available.
Upon using disk utiliy, I successfully verified the disk. Then I initiated the disk repair process.
    The current status:
    - checking file system
    - Volume repair complete
    - Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
The progress bar says "Verify and Repair volume "LaCie"" - the progress bar does not indicate how much has been done or how long it will take.
    Capacity: 1 TB (1,000,204,476,416 Bytes)
    Mount Point: Not Mounted
    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    All other status fields blank.
Any one know how long it will take for Disk Utility to repair the external HDD? Any other ideas as to how I can get the Lacie HDD to reconnect with the Macbook and resume normal operations? i.e. Time Machine backups, accessing contents through the Finder.

Mine Failed after 3 years and 4 months of using it as a Dedicated TM Backup drive...
When I used Disk Utility for repairs... it went from 7 minutes to 4 hours and after about 10 minutes it was saying 40 hours...
So I just replace it with a New EHD...

  • Initial Time machine backup to Time capsule results in kernel panic

I recently purchased a Retina display MacBook Pro (running Lion at the time) and transferred the data from an external hard drive with my Time Machine backups from my previous MBP. I also bought a new Time Capsule.
The first time I tried to back up to the Time Capsule from the Retina MBP via an ethernet connection it got to 40GB of 140GB before it shut down from a kernel panic. Interestingly, the Time Machine backup was successful when I used the external hard drive I was previously using for my Time Machine backups (connected via USB).
I don't think there is an issue with the Time Capsule because Finder can locate the Time Capsule and I can copy and paste files from the Macintosh HD to the Time Capsule disk.
I've done the following steps in order to try and fix the problem:
    1. Repair permissions
    2. Verify and Repair Macintosh HD
    3. Updated the operating system to Mountain Lion (at which point I successfully completed a Time Machine backup to the external hard drive I was using for Time machine backups but was unable to backup to the Time Capsule without the computer crashing from a kernel panic)
    4. Used Airport Utility to erase the sparse disk image bundle that had been created on the Time Capsule then tried to back up via ethernet to the time capsule - kernel panic ensued at 40GB of 140GB
    5. Used Disk Utility to erase Macintosh HD and re-installed Mountain Lion. Transferred data from the external hard drive Time Machine backup from step 3.
    6. Erased the sparse disk image bundle on the Time Capsule again.
    7. Tried to backup to the Time Capsule again via Ethernet - kernel panic.
For each of the attemtps to back up to the Time Capsule I've used a different ethernet cable (Cat 5 and 5e) and plugged it into a different ethernet port on the Time Capsule each time. I've also tried using both Thunderbolt ports on the MBP (with an Ethernet to Thunderbolt adaptor).
I'm out of ideas on how to trouble shoot this problem and would greatly appreciate any ideas!!
If anyone knows how to read error logs, here's the readout from one of the kernic panics:

Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to your problem:
    LaCie drive software
    VirusBarrier
I suggest you uninstall them according to the developers' instructions, reboot, and see whether there's any improvement. If there is, you can experiment with putting them back, one at a time, to identify which one is at fault. "VirusBarrier" is harmful and should not be reinstalled in any case.
If there's no improvement after making the suggested changes, post again.

  • How to restore a time machine backup from a corrupted disk

    Hi.
I have quite a problem. I recently downgraded to os x 10.5.4 due to the requirements of Digidesign's Pro Tools. I did so with a clean install in order to have the most optimized computer possible without loads of unused data. I had backed up my data using Time Machine on an external hard-drive (LaCie, 1 TB) so I wasn't worried about losing important data.
However, when I inserted my external hard-drive after the clean installation it turns out to be corrupted in some way. It is only recognized in Disk Utility, it doesn't mount on my desktop.
Disk Utility is unable to repair the disk. The errors are:
    +Verify and Repair volume “Kristoffer's back-up disk”+
    +Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.+
    +Invalid node structure+
    +Volume check failed.+
+Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.+
I went out and bought "Data Rescue II" at once to try to recover my data. It works fine with the stuff I've manually dragged to the disc but the Time Machine backup folders seem compressed in some way (It's only about 86 MB). And when I click a file restored from one of the Time Machine folders it seems like it's just a shortcut to an "original file". I get this error when double-clicking such a file:
+The alias "filename" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.+
Is there some way for me to get Time Machine to understand the back up disk even though it's corrupted? Or some other way to retrieve my data?
I have TONS of extremely important data on the disk so it would cost me a huge amount of work to format the disk and start from scratch.
    ANY help is greatly appreciated

no, that's quite impossible. you may try using Disk warrior on that drive. it's known to be able to fix the kind of error that DU is reporting. if that doesn't work your only hope is data recovery. If Data Rescue II doesn't work you can try other data recovery software like Filesalvage or try professional data recovery services (those can can a fortune).
Or some other way to retrieve my data?

  • How can I "Put Back" a time machine backup from the trash to my external hard drive?

Basically what happened was I accidentally put an older time machine backup from my external hard drive into the trash on my macbook. Since then, time machine has made new backups onto my external hard drive. How can I either "Put Back" or replace the deleted backup back into my hard drive?
Whenever I try to move it it says "A newer item named “Backups.backupdb” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you’re moving?" I click replace and after a few minutes of loading, it says "Cannot replace. An item named "" already exists."

As long as you don't delete the trash, the files should be recoverable.
I suspect using the Put Back command could take a long time, so be patient.
If your Time Machine backups are mixed with your daughter's backups you might want to buy a larger drive and move the Time Machine files to the new drive.
Regarding missing photos in iPhoto...There might be options to rebuild/recover that data from iPhoto rather than trying to revert to a Time Machine backup.
Check out this third party app, iPhoto Library Manager. It has a demo.
    http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/
    Options for a larger drive.
I like the Seagate USB 3.0 Backup plus drives. Works on USB 2.0 ports. They come formatted for PC but easy to format in Disk Utility.
I don't recommend Western Digital because of the boot problem with some of their drives.
    LaCie makes good drives.
All Mac formatted drives will cost more and it’s easy to reformat with Disk Utility. Do not use the software that comes with the drives. It’s recommended that you use Apple’s Disk Utility.
Prices vary but this gives you an idea of what you’ll find. As you notice the second and third TB is usually only $15 more per TB. Normally, you’ll find these prices but right now the 1T is more than the 2T
Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB USB 3.0 $85
Seagate Backup Plus 2 TB USB 3.0 $99
Seagate Backup Plus 3 TB USB 3.0 $115
I have seen the 3T on sale for $99.
Locally, Best Buy seems to have the best prices.

  • Time Machine Backup on External Drive Stops working after one week

    Hello,
I'm having a problem with the Time machine backup on an external LaCie drive. After e few days, it suddenly locks up, not performing any backup unless I force-restart my computer and switch off the drive.
    *My setup*:
    - iMac Alu 24 with MacOS X 10.5.1 and 3Gb RAM
    - LaCie external drive 320 Gb - design by Porsche, connected to the FW 400 port of the iMac --> this is the one used for the bakcups, it is left powered on at any time (never switched off)
    - 2 other LaCie external drives 160 Gb - design by Porsche, connected to the FW 400 port of the iMac --> they are generally switched off
TimeMachine is setup to its default scenario, backing up automatically on the external 320 Gb.
    *Daily usage* :
    - the iMac is set to boot automatically at 6:45
    - I usually switch it off manualy at the end of the day
    - Screen Saver is set to launch after 5 minutes
    - sleep time for computer is set to 1:30 hour
    - display sleep 15 min
    - hard disk are set to sleep whenever possible
First symptom : the computer never goes to sleep
Second symptom : I had the following problem already twice since I installed Leopard, once with the original install and today with the updated 10.5.1 version:
    - automatic backups went fine during the whole day : 7:45 8:45 9:45...
    - then an automatic backup starts but never finishes

  • When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?

I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot.  This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups.  It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up.  I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time.  I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much.  I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks.  The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks.  I have wasted more time than I care to.  I am think of going back to Windows.  I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem.  Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.

Allen Thanks for your reply.  All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner.  Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data.  I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection.  In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge.  There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem.  I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support.  I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space.  This might be a problem also.  However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive.  Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past.  This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period.  Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working.  Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions.  If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution.  The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it.  I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time.  I run it every few days.

  • My time machine backup (on external hdd) doesn't see my new internal HDD.

I just installed a new HDD and RAM in my mid-09 MBP. When I try and restore from a time machine backup on an external drive, I only get the option to install it on the other partition on that drive - my new internal drive doesn't even appear as an option. Could it be because the backup is from lion but my os disc is leopard?

When reading my report, I forgot to mention how the external hard drive is formatted :

  • I reformatted drive with Time Machine Backups, can I recover them ?

I had an iMac and an External Firewire drive used for Time Machine Backups, All my Personal Files and Music were backed up to the External Drive using Time Machine. The external Drive is a LaCie 500GB Triple Interface Drive. After a few days of upgrading to Leopard on my iMac I noticed that the External Drive was causing some problems, programs were hanging and as a result I had to remove the drive to use my iMac. I later ran Disk Utility to find that there was invalid node struture on the drive. this for some reason could not be repaired.
In between I bought a new Mac Pro and sold my iMac, when I went to transfer everything from the external drive backup from Time Machine I was still having problems so it took me ages but I transferred 11GB of data from the External to another iMac I got a loan from my friend.
I repaired and reformatted the external on my friends iMac not using Leopard and the drive is perfect now, I then transferred the files 11GB back from my friends iMac to the external drive but now all I seem to have is thousands of alias's.
I don't know really how Time Machine stores its backups and this is my own fault for not reading up on it first. Currently I am using Data Rescue II to scan my external drives free space for my deleted files hoping to recover all of them to my new Mac Pro.
Can someone please advise if this will work and if not how can I get my files back. Also is is worth mentioning that when I was having problems with the external drive I noticed that there was something like 250GB Free, and 11GB used not sure where the rest of the 239GB went to? Does Time Machine have files stored invisible or something?

  • Corrupted time machine backup on external hd connected to Airport extreme?

I have an Airport extreme 11n (not gigabit) and a Lacie external hard disk connected to the usb port. Time machine is set up to make backups wirelessly from my laptop to this external disk. It used to work fine, but no I have the following problem all the time: Time machine complains that it cannot perform the backup. When this happens, I cannot access the drive from the finder (normally I can). I check the drive physically and I notice that it's LED show that it is constantly reading/writing (is yellow instead of red). The solution is (as also suggested by Apple support) to use disk utility and perform a repair on the drive. This solves the problem, but... only temporarily. After one or two successful backups, the same problem: no backup possible, drive not accessible in finder, disk utility finds problems. What can i do?

Somehow I thought that with OS X 10.6 Time Machine did support disks connected to Airport devices, but I guess I'm wrong.
The LaCie disk has indeed its own external power supply brick. Is this relevant?
    I found this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550
which is not about airport disks, but I checked my LaCie disk and it has a Master Boot Record Partition Scheme. Should I change that?
It is also formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I thought that this was the recommended format, but checking in the Help of OS X 10.6, I found an article "Disks that can be used with Time Machine" which says: "The most common format for a Time Machine backup disk is Mac OS Extended format, but Time Machine also supports Mac OS Extended (Case sensitive, Journaled) and XSan formats"
implying that the Extended format is more preferable than the Journaled format, right?
I don't think the disk drive is defective: I after "repairing" it with disk utility, I could back up again, at least one time, before the problem reappears.
