Time Machine backup problems

Good morning.
I have a Quad-Core Intel Xeon G5, running Leopard 10.5.4. I have attached a LaCie 1TB external HD via firewire to be used as a Time Machine. The initial backup went smoothly, taking only about 6 hours to backup nearly 5.5 GB of information. The problem I'm having is this: when I go into Time Machine, all I see is the initial backup and the current backup; there is nothing incrementally in between.
I have checked the Sharing Pref and made sure the computer name is only upper and lower case letter, without spaces. Prior to the initial backup, I erased and reformatted the HD using the Disk Utility, and formatted it using the GUID Partition, which was done per instructions from the Apple website.
After all that, I am still only getting the initial backup and the current backup, and nothing else. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Or what step in the process I've missed?
Thanks your helpm -- Michael

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "backupd" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. Post the messages from the last backup, beginning with "Starting standard backup." Post the log text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • Time Machine Backup Problem with OS X 10.9.4

I am having a problem with the Time Machine backup on a MacBook Pro 2.6 running OS X 10.9.4.  What is happening is it starts the backup and then gets to a certain point and just freezes indefinitely at that point.  (Indefinitely meaning overnight >12 hrs)  I deleted the sparsebundle file and restarted the backup and it essentially freezes at the same point.  It's like there's a particular file it has an issue with.  Is there a way to tell what file it's backing up when it freezes so I can exclude it from the backup.  I initially thought it was a Time Capsule and backing up over the network issue.  I acquired a USB 3 Seagate drive and tried using it with the same result.  So, the issue has nothing to do with the Maverick network "qwerks" I've seen referenced.
My initial backup size is about 250 GB.  I've pared that back by excluding the Parallels Virtual Machines on the hard drive and my IPhoto Library.  That scales the back up size to about 55 GB.   Before I did the file exclusion it was hanging up at 1.83 GB out of ~250GB.  Now it's hanging up at 1.82 GB out of ~55 GB.  So it's as if it is reaching some file it has an issue with and stopping.
    Any thoughts?

You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

I also had to restart the server and client after applying the "fix" I described above. Basically, no user should have multiple, simultaneous file sharing sessions on the server. But even clearing the user sessions does not resolve the problem beyond the next Time Machine backup, so I also tried disabling and enabling file sharing, but the problem also returns after doing this. Only restarting both the client and server after clearing the sessions has worked for me when I have this problem. The problem may return much later, but this work aroudn definitely works as a temporary solution.
Next time I encounter this problem I will try restarting just the server or just the client, because it is unlikely that the problem exists due to something on both systems. Server 3.x is definitely not as stable as it should be, but for my use, it is getting the job done.

  • Old Time Machine Backup Problems - Permissions

Today, I figured out how to access my iPhoto Library photos from my old Time Machine backups. I was SO happy! The backups were from 2011 and earlier (hardrive crashed in May 2012). I had not done a Time Machine backup since 2011, so I decided to do a new backup today. After the backup finished, I decided to look at my old photos again (in the old backups) and when I tried to click on any of the files in the old backups, I get the message: The folder “Pictures” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.
Of course, now I am crushed/frustrated because I do not understand why I cannot access the old backups anymore. *Note: the new backup is accessible.

    No problem.
You probably need to use Browse Other Time Machine Disks and within that older backup go to User/Pictures and restore the file "iPhoto Library" to a separate folder on your drive (so as not to replace your current iPhoto library) and then look in that restored photo library.
You need to do this in the Time Machine "Star Wars" interface from "Browse Other...."

  • Time machine backup problem with company backup.

I have serious problems with making backups of our company computers by Time Machine.
We have Synology NAS with Time Machine Support. When I made setting for Time Machine backups (users, shares, quotas, etc. ) ewerything worked fine. All Time machines uses one directory, that appears on the network like a Time capsule. Machines have their own accounts with quotas etc. After a few days started many problems. Some Time Machines has missed their target sparsebundles and unsuccessfully tried write into some others. After Time Machine restart and new manual setting problem persisting. Only successfull solution is complete remove all affected sparsebundles (miss all older backups) and make new ones. This problems appears on many different computers with various OSX version 10.6 - 10.8.
Can you help me with this problem?

I have used OS X Server on an Xserve and gained the impression that it did little that OS X would not do. Earlier versions had a fairly easy to use GUI but as it developed it became more tedious and unreliable than using OS X on the same hardware. It was far from cheap for unlimited users even with educational discounts.
At one time OS X Server was more advanced than the same version number OS X - about half a version ahead.
I am not saying that it may not be faster to set up if you have had previous OS X Server experience but it is a steep learning curve after only OS X experience. The average user would get there faster with one of the many tutorials on the web about using OS X as a server.
At one time OS X Server had a security bug in that it confused FTP root with machine root under some conditions leaving the whole disk open to the public.

  • Time Machine backup problem. Stuck indexing 101. Any suggestions?

    Hi
I am having trouble with my Time Machine backup and would be grateful for your help.
I have downloaded the widget and copied the script below.
Time Machine has been operating without issue since bought, around a year ago.
The last backup was 18th May. Nothing comes to mind that may have triggered a change on that date.
I placed the "My Book" backup volume in the private folder for Spotlight.
The indexing process has been running without interruption for over 24 hours.
The backup drive is connected via USB
I have changed the USB port to ensure the connection is sound, which it appears to be

  • Time machine backup problem with new MacPro

On my new MacPro (6 core, 32gb, 1TB ssd) I am trying to do my initial Time Machine backup. The MacPro has 350 GB of files on it. When I start Time Machine it shows that it is backing up 355 GB of data onto the 4 TB LaCie drive and the time to complete is about 20 minutes. (The extrnal HD is excluded from the backup list). When it nears the end of the 355 gb backup all of a sudden it just starts increasing both the number of gbs copying and number of gbs left to copy (both numbers just start going up incrementally together) way beyond the initial 355 gbs - I've stopped it at 910 GBs several times. Tried different external hard drives, restarts etc.
Any ideas what is going on?
    Thanks

  • HT3275 Time machine backup problem

When Time Capsule runs the regularly scheduled backup I get a message that reads "Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/myusername's iMac (3).sparsebundle” is already in use." If I click on the Time Capsule app it runs for awhile but doesn't connect and shows the message "The operation can’t be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -6584)." Last successful backup is shown as 9/25/13.
Any suggestions on how to restore the backup program so that it runs successfully?
    Thanks,

You have two different errors there.
The already in use is the most common.. that just means the TC connection to the computer has broken down.. a simple reboot of the TC is enough usually to get things going.. but see C12 for more details.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
I would do a full network restart in correct order.. so with everything powered off.. turn on
    Modem.. wait 2min
TC.. wait 2min (any other network clobber like switch or EOP adapters, in order they appear by connection)
    Computers etc.
No luck you also have a possible backup corruption.. 6584 is a serious error.
Do a disk verify.. see A5.
If that passes but you still have problems the best solution is to wipe the TC via airport utility.. erase.. you only need a fast erase and do a fresh clean backup.

  • Time machine backup problem with upgrade to Lion - Choose Backup Disk button non-existant

Hi, I just upgraded my mac mini to Lion and have encountered a problem with by Time Machine. It no longer sees my networked drive for back up. So, I followed the instructions on this site http://code.stephenmorley.org/articles/time-machine-on-a-network-drive/ and get to item 6b. and have a problem I have not been able to sort out. Instead of the button "Choose Backup Disk" on the Time Machine window, I have a button "Select Disk" with a button "Options" under it. When I click "Select Disk" I get a window promtping me to "Set Up Other Time Capsule" and clicking that takes me to a window for AirPort Utility. (screen shot )
Anyone know why I don't have the right button for starters and why I can't access any drives on my machine at all? I followed the web instructions on the site I mention above because initially I had an error about AFP, so suspected the drive set up here (it is my work) is incompatible.
(The only IT guy we have is on vacation for 2 weeks and then I am on vacation for 2 weeks and can't wait a month in order to back up! Thought I would try here to see if I can get answers before I am away.)
    Thanks in advance!

i had a similar problem when I first installed Lion last year.  It seems that some network NAS products need a firmware update to work with Lion.  I contacted the manufacturer and they helped me out.  I am using a Synology NAS system.  Problem solved after firmware update.

  • Time Machine backup problems with firewire 800 since Mavericks

Since I installed Mavericks about a week ago, I have had problems with TM not working with my LaCie external drive. At best, it would not back up when the mac was awakened from sleep mode and in use.  When I would open time machine preferences, I would see the "preparing for back up" prompt that would last forever. Not only was it doing that, I have found that it would freeze my mac. I figured this out when I was not able to get my mac to respond from the login screen. It was basically frozen and couldn't log on.  I noticed the back up drive light flickering but nothing would happen even with waiting a long time. I finally figured out that shutting off the TM EHD would unfreeze the mac and it would start functioning normal again. This was happening with my external HD daisy chained to another external drive that contains my iPhoto, iMovie and Itunes files. That drive was also connected to the mac using firewire 800. I tried many different configurations, switched the order the drives were daisy chained, tried different cables and even directly connected the TM drive with firewire 800 to the mac, but the problems still persisted. The strange thing is that when I connect the TM drive through USB, it works flawlesly and no hanging up of the computer. Thats what Ive been forced to do. I have my other EHD connected directly through firewire 800 and it works fine. I only have one firewire 800 port, and since it works fine with my other LaCie drive, it makes me think its not the port or macs hardware? I can only guess this is a Time Machine issue or something wrong with my TM drive?  I have been in contact with LaCie and given them all these details but I have not heard back yet on what they feel the problem is. I thought I would post this to see if anyone else had some experience with this problem.

Forgot to mention I did that. Completely erased and reformatted HD and then reconnected to TM. Didn't help. I did have the mac hang up while installing Mavericks and had to eventually shut off the external drive. It did that to me the firs time I tried to install Mavericks and I lost all my data because it did a clean install after that. I had another back up on CCC so I just restored from there. This time the update to Mavericks transferred my data. I have had TM hang up my mac in the past on occasion, but I was always able to shut down the drive and then the mac would return to normal. Perhaps I should try to erase and reformat again?

  • Hard drive issues due to Time Machine backup? Can't source the problem.

Last night my computer began to run extremely slow. All apps simultaneously lagged (spinning wheel of death), but then began working again after about 0.5-1 minute. This whole-system crash repeated about every 10 minutes a total of probably 5-6 times. The last time all apps stopped functioning and (CPU usage of iTunes was 85-95% for some reason (viewed using activity monitor), I am guessing due to its use of multiple hard drives as my music is stored on an external drive) and my computer just shut off after about 3 minutes of completely stalling. Rebooted computer and was left with an EXTREMELY slow system; opening up the quick menu (forgot the name, button on the top row of keyboard) for booting applications took 2-3 minutes. I eventually started disk utility, verified disk. It said I needed to repair disk by restarting my computer while holding down [Command] R message. Made sure i had a backup (at the time of that backup my computer was experiencing the problems above, 11:21pm), so I restarted whilst holding command R. Booted into the OSX utilities, retried the disk repair, received the "Disk Utility cannot repair this drive: back up as many files as you can..." message. Erased/reformatted my internal hard drive, and ran "repair disk" again; disk utility found no problems with the disk. Restored my files to my internal hard drive using OSX utilities (using the full system restore of the 11:21pm backup), and left it running while ran some errands. When I came back to look at my computer, it had attempted startup and crashed with the "kernel error" or whatever where all the text is on the left of the screen. It said something about not being able to find "disk2", which I believe was the disk containing OSX utilities (as veiwed in disk utility while running OSX utilities). Force shutdown, reboot with command R, wiped my internal drive again. Decided to only install a fresh version of OSX in an attempt to scan for viruses (using Sophos Antivirus, running scan as I am typing this), as the slow behavior of my computer had been very strange and began almost instantaneously (seemed like a virus/malware). No threats found so far with Sophos (scanning all my external drives too to source the problem in time machine backups), but I have deduced that there is something wrong with the most current Time machine backup, as it re-established the "problem" (easily fixed once drive is erased using OSX utilities) with my hard drive once I restored it to my internal hard drive. I am wondering (if it is not a virus) if I will need to repeat this whole process with every time machine backup to find where it went wrong, or if i can somehow pinpoint the problem easier. Will all of my Time Machine backups be corrupted now? Why would the Time Machine backup affect the state of the hard drive (does in need to be repaired or not)? Very confused at these random problems. If it is a virus (I will post the results of the Sophos antivirus scan as soon as it is finished), can I remove it from the backup and then restore it with no problems? What do you suggest I do? Will it make a difference to restore the most recent backup (11:21pm) using Migration assistant now that I am running a fresh install of OSX mountain lion? How can I source and eliminate the problem?

  • Problems with creating a Time Machine backup on external HDD

    Hello!
I tried to make a new Time Machine backup file on my external harddrive today.
Unfortunately it stopt after about 6 or 7 gb with the popup:
''the backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. The problem may be temporary.  Try again later to back up.  If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk''
I'm certain that the HDD (Western Digital 1Tb) was correctly formatted (Mac Os Extended (Journaled)). It's the same type as my internal harddrive.
I also have a Time Machine Buddy logfile. Maybe that will help in finding the problem.
Also noticable is that after the backup failure, I can't seem to restore or format the external HDD. Once I connect it to a regular pcc and remove and reinstall the driver, I can use it again.
here is the logfile from the latest backup try:

    Time fo a bug report.

  • When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?

I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot.  This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups.  It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up.  I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time.  I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much.  I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks.  The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks.  I have wasted more time than I care to.  I am think of going back to Windows.  I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem.  Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.

Allen Thanks for your reply.  All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner.  Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data.  I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection.  In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge.  There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem.  I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support.  I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space.  This might be a problem also.  However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive.  Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past.  This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period.  Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working.  Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions.  If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution.  The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it.  I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time.  I run it every few days.

nas on airport extreme not recognized by time machine. same nas was previously used as time machine backup on different airport extreme. are there any configuration files that i can delete to fix this problem ?

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.
    1) Has one of the recent updates either on the AE (firmware) or OSX disabled this function?
No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
    2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.
