Time Machine Backup Restoration Question
Hi and tnxs for reading.
In order to restore an entire time machine backup on a new mac, does the new mac have to run the same version of OSX that was used for the TM backup or not?
In other words, are the old version of TM backup compatible with the following version of OSX?
Example: TM backupped with OSX Mountain Lion. New MAC running OSX Mavericks.
Many tnxs.
Regards.
You will migrate in this case.. otherwise you are going to restore Mountain Lion.
See Pondini.. http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
He discusses the setup assistant and migration assistant. It only covers up to Mountain Lion but the same stuff applies to Mavericks.

Time Machine backup restores OS X and Apps
Time Machine backup restores OS X and Apps or only Data?
Hi lseit,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like information what what information is restored while restoring from Time Machine. For information on this process, please review the information in the attached article.
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
Restoring data from Time Machine backups
With Time Machine, you can go "back in time" to restore files, versions of files, or your entire system. If Time Machine alerts you that your Time Machine backup disk can't be found, make sure your backup drive is connected and mounted.

Hard drive failure! New hard drive/Time machine backup/iPhone questions
Hello,
I have a 2011 MacBook Pro who's hard drive failed (rather acutely too, I do use disk utility to check it's health regularly) and I bought a replacement to install (SSD!). I have a bunch of questions but have only found partial answers in searches. Maybe it's best to list them:
1. I'd like to do a fresh install of the OS X using OS X Recovery because I'm concerned my Time Machine backup is partly corrupted. I hadn't updated to Mavericks, will I be able to install Mountain Lion? If not: will this be a problem with my backup files?
2. Say the OS X Recovery works, how do I use Time Machine to restore things like my iTunes library/iMessages/email/iPhoto library etc? In other words: just the data I can't get any other way (I hope it's not too corrupted). And/or should I use my iCloud backup on a few of these (iMessages/contacts)?
3. Do I need to set up the new OS X install with the same account names/home disk name etc. for the restored backup files to function?
4. Is this going to f'up iCloud or vice versa?
5. Finally, how do I sync my iPhone to the "new" computer without erasing the iPhone (which had an iOS update since my last backup to Time Machine). Or do I have to restore the iPhone too.
6. How come Apple doesn't have a mobile theme for their website yet?
Any help would be much appreciated,
MattDo you still have the original System Reinstall DVD set that came with your Mac?
If you created that Lion external drive you have from YOUR Mac, when Lion was installed on it, and it also contains a Recovery HD partition you can use that to boot to the Recovery HD and reinstall Lion on the new drive. And or Clone that external to the new internal drive you installed.
Right since your Mac came with Snow Leopard you can't use the Online Internet Recovery system to reinstall Lion, as your system didn't originally come with Lion, but you should still be able to boot to it to do diagnosic things like using Disk Utility, going to the Net to get help and even Restoring the system from a Time Machine backup. But you will get an error if you select Reinstall Mac OS X. The firmware update is usually applied with system updates.
If you created a New Time Machine Backup when any of the Download Only version of OS X were installed on your internal drive Time Machine, the system, Copies over the files needed to boot the system from that backup drive. If it was a care over backup from when Snow Leopard was installed is might or might not be bootable. Only way to tell is to connect it and at startup hold down the Option key to get the Boot selection screen, IE The Boot Manager screen, and see if it shows up as a Boot Source. If it does thenn it contains the files needed to get to the Mac OS X Utilities, IE the Recovery HD files.
What you should do is Boot the system from either the Time Machine backup, if it is bootable, or your External that has Lion on it, The Recovery HD if that drive contains a Recovery HD, or your Original Snow Leopard reinstall DVD that came with your Mac and then try to Restore from your Time Machine backup drive.
If that fails to restore your system properly then nyou should reinstall Snow Leopard and the iLife Apps from the Original Discs then upgrade to Mt Lion which will be in the Mac App Store under your Purchases area. Then maybe you can restore your files from that Time Machine backup.

I've had a bunch of issues with my computer (you can look at some of my other questions on these forums) which, to my mind anyway, seemed to be finally given a diagnosis when my HD crashed. It may be paranoia but there have been enough problems that I'd rather do a clean install to be on the safe side.
I have an early 2011, shipped with Snow Leopard.
I was under the impression that Time Machine can't be used as a boot drive and the OS X Recovery is a firmware update (on my computer) or hard wired in (on later computers). I might be wrong. I was planning on using the internet recovery, the HD failed right after I got some password protected files unencrypted and onto an external drive (was that necessary?) but wasn't sure if it's a problem if it installs Mavericks.
So Setup Assistant will configure my accounts the same and I don't need to worry about that? That's a relief.
Thanks for the lengthy response. -
Installing OS X from Time Machine Backup. Questions
Hi. I have a quick question.
When you buy a new iMac, and you re-install/restore OS X from a Time Machine Backup taken from another machine, is EVERYTHING copied across?
What I mean is, will it restore the new machine into EXACTLY the same state as the old one? Will it carry across the same OS X version (10.6.2), all the Apps you had installed (and registered), every single detail?Reuben Feffer wrote:

What are Time Machines two restore options?
Here's the situation. I have a brand new 21.5-inch iMac that I would like to get exchanged, because it's faulty. I've put quite a lot of data on the new iMac and I have a Time Machine drive attached to it. It would save me A LOT of time if I could simply restore that data from the faulty 21.5-inch iMac to the properly-working 21.5-inch iMac. So, exact same hardware.
Tell me more about this Backup Utility on the Snow Leopard install DVD. If I perform a restore using that, will it re-install the Operating System, all the Fonts, Apps, EVERYTHING from my Time Machine backup?
yes, everything. but it should only be done on exact same hardware as i said. if you'll get a new mac which is exactly the same hardware as the faulty one then you can use it. to use it boot from the snow leopard install DVd and choose "restore system from backup" from the utilities menu. then just follow the instructions. this will wipe the hard drive and restore your whole system just as it was at the backup time.
if you get a different kind of mac then use setup assistant instead. that will keep your user data, apps, fonts etc but give you a fresh OS.

Lightroom 4 Time Machine backup restoration
Hello,
My MacBook Pro has died. I have a complete TimeMachine backup of the harddrive but as an interim measure I will be using a Macbook Air, which cannot accomodate the entire Time Machine backup.
I have tried to drag the Lightroom application from the backup drive to the Air but it asks for a Serial when I open it.
I'd like to know if anyone knows of a way of doing a partial restore of a TimeMachine backup so that I can restore my old catalog, library and settings for Lightroom on the Air without doing a complete transfer of the old hard drive?
Thanks for your help.Maybe you would have better luck if you asked your question on a Mac forum or TimeMachine forum?
Because this has nothing to do with Lightroom. Your chance to find a LR user here, who has also TimeMachine plus the specific need to restore a partial backup, are obviously rather slim?
Sorry for being of not much help, as a Windows user.
My backup strategy is different: I do backups of my vital data in a less automated way, but I have any partial junk available on several drives.
If my PC dies, I'd have to do a clean install of a new Windows plus my programs and data, which means following a lenghty checklist.
Good luck, Cornelia -

Time Machine backup/restoring through migration assistant/issues
Hi.
I would like to restore a backup from an external hard drive to my macbook pro.
Not beeing aware of the procedure, I skipped the "set-up assistant" phase where you're proposed the option of transferring informations from an another Mac or from a Time Machine, etc...
My backup files from my previous TimeMachine are on an external hard drive, plugged via USB to my MacBookPro. After looking for the right procedure, I tried to restore my backup through the Migration Assistant.
But the Migration Assistant won't find my external hard drive. Even though, weirdly, I can see and naviguate it via the Finder.
Is there something I should've done? Am I missing something?
I would really like some help on this one.

Auto mount/eject external drive for time machine backup/restore
I have an Iomega ultramax drive connected via firewire 800 for my Time machine backups.
This drive will automatically spin down after a period of non-use. I like this as it means lower power usage and lower risk of data loss (head crashes etc..).
My problem is, when the drive spins down like this, some file open operations pause until the drive spins up again. I cannot remember exactly which applications I have had the problem with, but I assumed that this was part of the OS. This delay can be up to 5 seconds or so and is really annoying.
Assuming this is not just a specific third party application thing. My suggestion to Apple is to do one or both of the following:
1) Multi thread the file open dialog (process?) so that is comes up instantly, and then adds the drive when it has spun up.
2) Modify time machine so that it can automatically mount/eject the external drive just when doing backups and restores.
Currently I have a bit of a messy work around to this problem where I have a loadd scheduled shell script that runs every hour that mounts the drive, runs time machine to backup and the ejects the drive. It works, but is not perhaps as nice a solution as it could be.
Does anybody else suffer from this problem?Yes that is correct, the drive spins down and remains mounted.
To be perhaps clearer. The problem is not essentially a time machine problem, it is to do with whatever implements the file open capability that other apps use. In the above sitation, there is always a delay for the drive to spin up when I go to open a file (perhaps five seconds) in other applications. I assume this delay is caused by the file open process waiting until some data is retrieved from the external drive before giving me the option of choosing a file. This delay is annoying, as I do not ever want to open a file from my external drive (this is dedicated to time machine backups) when I am using pages, or any other application other than a time machine restore.
This particular issue is similar (but I suspect nowhere near as bad) as one of my pet hates about windows XP. In windows it appears that the explorer will wait for a response on all its connected drives (hard disks, mounted cds, network drives), so any sort of network connectivity or hardware delay will cause explorer to freeze. As explorer seems to be embedded in most things you do with the OS, this can cause anything or everything to freeze (web browsing, you name it).
In my setup, as I have the external drive totally dedicated to time machine backups, another thing that would fix the problem for me is the suggestion number 2 I suggested where time machine auto mounts for the backup and then ejects after the backup. With the feature, then the external drrive will only ever be mounted for short periods of time (the above problem does not ocurr if the external drive is not mounted), and when it is mounted it will be spinning, so I will never have my file open delay. I would however have a short delay when doing a time machine restore for the mount of the drive, but this is a much rarer event the using file open in all my other apps.
Thanks for the info on the feedback link, I will post this to that. -
Can't sync applications after Time machine backup restoration
Hello.
I'm running 10.5.4 on a Macbook whose hard drive crashed. I replaced it with another one and restored from my closest time machine backup. Everything is OK with the files, the problem was when I tried to sync my ipod touch.
The ipod is running 2.0.2. It contained 9 applications, but after the first try to sync I got the error message that several applications couldn't be synced. For each of them I had a message like "Application blah blah could not be synced because you lack the permissions to do so".
More importantly, the iPod touch now doesn't contain any of these applications, even though they still get reported as a problem during syncing. Rather than deleted, they seem to be hidding, though I can't access any from the touch.
How can I recover my applications being synced without losing their data?I have used iTunes to reset the iPod to the factory default settings. After the syncronisation and reuploading of all my music and photos, I still get the same error on application syncing: I have no permissions to sync applications.
I have tried downloading new free applications from the App store, but it is the same, nothing gets synced, the new applications are added to the list of problematic programs that can't be synced.
Here's a snapshot of the error: http://gradha.sdf-eu.org/appsyncerror.png -
TIME MACHINE - Backup & Restore Inquiry
I'm new to using Time Machine and I just need to better understand exactly how it works.
Here is my current config:
Mac Pro Tower (2006-2007)
Running OS X: 10.5.8
Primary Hard Drive: 250GB
Primary Use: Logic Pro (for music production)
I want to upgrade the OS to Snow Leopard (which I already own the discs I purchased in 2009). As well I'm going to be chaning out the current 250GB hard drive to a new 1TB hard drive. This drive will be the main operating drive.
I have already done a Time Machine back up of my current 250GB hard drive to an external hard drive, but I'm confused about the restoration. Since this is a new 1TB drive being put in, and since it won't be formated for Mac use already, will I need to boot up from my OS X Leopard discs and reinstall that first?
If yes, I don't know what to do from that point forward in order to restore the rest of the programming from my Time Machine backup (if it's even possible). I need to better understand if Time Machine does a backup of the current hard drive to restore onto my new one, or if regardless of backup I have to re-install all my software (including Logic Pro and tons of plugins) all over again?
Anyone who can help me understand this process better ASAP would be so greatly apprecatied.
THANK YOU!Yes, I suggest you initialize the new drive while you have the entire resources of Mac OS X available, and because you can start the process and surf the web or catch up on your emails while it works away in the background.
Those "Full Retail" DVDs say they are upgrades, but generally do not require you to install 10.5 Leopard first -- you can install 10.6 Snow leopard onto a newly-initialized drive if it is GUID formatted, MacOS X Extended (journaled). Then use Software Update to bring it up to date.
When you do this you have the equivalent of a "new" machine. Use Pondidini's article (blue underlined text above). he recommends you use Setup Assistant to restore from your backup onto your new machine, and provides instructions.
Setup Assistant is designed to transfer all or selected data, apps, etc. from one Mac, or its Time Machine or "clone" backups, to set up a new Mac just like the old one. -
Time Machine Backup/Restore of a Multi-Partition Laptop HDD
Hello!
I have a MacBook Pro and I would like to split its drive into two partitions, one for Leopard, one for Files. I believe that Time Machine will backup both volumes (if I remove one of the volumes from the "Do Not Backup" list under Options... then they both get backed up?).
So, my question would then be, in a restore situation, would the installer/TM restore both partitions? If my drive crashed and I purchased a brand new, bigger one and installed it, then tried to restore the TM backup, would it complain that the drive isn't the same size? Would it give me an option to decide what size each partition will be before it restores both? How would this all work?
Thank You.Ryan Hanson wrote:

partitioning startup drive is never a good idea. all it will do is slow your computer down.
I believe that Time Machine will backup both volumes (if I remove one of the volumes from the "Do Not Backup" list under Options... then they both get backed up?).
yes, TM will back them both up.
So, my question would then be, in a restore situation, would the installer/TM restore both partitions?
no, the restore utility on the install DVd will restore the system partition only. you can restore the other partition by hand while booted regularly.
If my drive crashed and I purchased a brand new, bigger one and installed it, then tried to restore the TM backup, would it complain that the drive isn't the same size?
no, TM doesn't care about that.
Would it give me an option to decide what size each partition will be before it restores both? How would this all work?

Time Machine backup/restore on iMac with SSD and HD...
Time Machine backs up the SSD and HD on my iMac into one "sparse bundle" for the computer. I need some direction on how to get to the HD backup in order to restore individual files and folders.
PLEASE do not give an answer like "Just enter Time Machine and click Restore." I have been trying to get this to work for hours - if it was so easy, I would not be asking. (I don't mean to sound rude so please don't be offended.)
Thanks for any help.Sorry, Bob, I see that I didn't say at the beginning of this discussion, but the SSD has all my applications and OS X system. The purpose for the SSD is to run the system and apps faster, while having all files/documents on the slower and larger HD.
So my home folder (my UserName) in the left panel is on the SSD. I have no problem accessing the SSD backups in Time Machine.
When I choose the MacHD in Time Machine, I cannot select a date from the timeline of backups on the far right because all the backups are grayed out (not available). Choosing the SSD gives no access to the files from the separate HD.
I also have a MacBook Pro. It is backed up to the same Time Capsule using Time Machine and has its own separate "sparse bundle." But the iMac puts both of its separate drives into the same sparse bundle. I asked the Apple Support person I spoke with the other day whether I should have separated them before doing the backup, but he said no - it is backed up correctly.
Does anybody out there know if Apple has any specific support articles about using the two separate drives on one computer, whether for backup and restore or for any other purposes? -
Time machine backup restore in mavricks
Hi all so I used to have my old MBP which had a seagate 1 TB backup drive as a time machine and had a lot of files which were important to me. But when I brought my new MBP i couldn't access the previous backup in the time machine. I tried the (hold option key which in time machine tab and selected my previous backup but when I enter time machine I still cannot restore my previous data. I need help urgent as the files are very important to access.
While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

Will a Mountain Lion Time Machine backup restore to a Lion MBP?
I have two computers:
(1) My iMac late 2009. This is upgradeable to Mountain Lion.
(2) My MBP late 2006. This is running Lion, but is not upgradeable to Mountain Lion.
If I upgrade my iMac to Lion and my iMac needs repair will I be able to restore from Time Machine to my older MBP?
Thanks,
dougYes, I would have the same problems with CCC - if I upgrade my iMac to Mountain Lion.
If I don't upgrade, then it works just great. I unmount the CCC clone from one computer, attach it to the other computer and do a reverse-incremental-backup to the other computer and - voila! - I have synchronized my two computers!
It's the only way I know of synchronizing two computers.
I've been doing this for several years now with no problems.
It probably only works because the OS is the same and the hardware on my late 2009 iMac and late 2006 MBP are sufficiently similar. Both use Core 2 Duo cpus.
But if I upgrade to Mountain Lion (or, upgrade my MBP to an i5 or i7 cpu) I will lose the ability to do this. So on travel, I would have no easy way of synchronizing apps and files.
Of course one easy solution is just "don't upgrade." It's not like anything is particularly broken now. But it's always fun to have the latest OS.
I'm just not sure of the best strategy for having everything I need for travel if I want to use the MBP. I guess I could always switch from this quick synchronization process to a tedious "all afternoon and evening" process of moving files and folders over.
The kinds of files I'm talking about are source files I'm working on, VMs - all the typical stuff people have. Photos. Whatever.
I know how to do it manually. It's just a time-consuming nuisance is all.
One thing I'm doing is moving away from "On My Mac" folders in Mail and doing everything in IMAP. That should help. I also have LogMeIn installed. So I could always get something if I forgot it. And I have more stuff in DropBox and Evernote. That also helps.
Thanks,
doug -
ITunes crashing after Time Machine backup restored?

--Run software update, which should tell you you need to upgrade to 10.6.4.
--Do not choose everything and update all at once, that crashed my kernel. I suggest you just update the system itself.
--iTunes should open and your library should be fine (mine asked to locate the library).
--After this, go back and do the Java and other necessary software updates. I avoided the Safari update because I have seen many posts about Safari system updates causing weird flukey things.
One additional complication was that I was restoring from Time Machine after a transfer from old MBP to new MBP via Migration Assistant. That could have been responsible for the kernel panic. I was required to use the shipping disk to reinstall the system and do disk repair before I could upgrade to 10.6.4.
