Time Machine Backup Retrieval Problem

Hi all (especially Podini!), hoping for some help with the following. I recently did a clean install for Mavericks (wiping my MBPro hard drive) - I only wanted to restore files from my backups (photos, music, docs, etc).  After the clean install, I then began to configure my computer and in doing so, opened up Time Machine Preferences and turned it "on".  It began to do a backup of my new "basically empty" HD.  When I went to the Time Machine to pull my files from old backups - they no longer show, it only shows the latest backup of the "basically empty" HD.
I'm not positive, but I think part of the problem is that the TIme Capsule thinks I am a new user? I do not know the exact names of my drives from before the wipe.
Any help would TRULY be appreciated.  Bascially my whole life of digital memories and work are in the balance.
Thank you, ~Scott

The bad news first - unfortunately Pondini is no longer with us.
If you look on your backup drive, how many backups do you see?

  • Time Machine backup deletion problem

I'm stuck on something dumb but really frustrating, and couldn't figure out where to ask this. The forum search dropped me in here, so I guess I'll post it here. Any advice would be appreciated.
I have Sophos on my computer, and during the last scan it found a couple suspect files in one of my Time Machine backups. I was trying to figure out how to delete those files when I ran into trouble. I just went with instinct, opened the drive in the Finder and tried to drag those problem files to the trash, but it wouldn't let me do it that way, so I thought, "Okay, can I drag the entire FOLDER to the Trash? I don't really need that backup anyway." The annoying thing here is that it does let you move the folders to the Trash, but it doesn't let you either empty the Trash or move the folders back where they were at that point, so now they're just kinda stuck there and it's driving me nuts.
By now I've figured out the way I should have deleted the files, but since right now I can't, since the folders are stuck in the Trash where I can't seem to do anything with them, is there a way to fix this?

  • Time Machine backup connection problem...

I keep getting an error message when trying to connect to my back up disk:
"The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
This is all of a sudden - out of the blue.  I tried renaming my Airport Time Capsule and I tried resetting it to "default" settings - no luck.  It connects fine to extend my network (Airport Extreme) and connect to the internet.  Time Machine sees it but can't connect to it for backups...  Help.

See if you can mount the TC disk in finder.
Even do it manually .. use Go from top menu.. Connect to server.. and type in the address to the TC.
AFP://TCname or AFP://TCIPaddress where you replace with actual TC name or actual TC IP address.
If that fails then you need to do a factory reset of the TC and give it a new name..
Follow correct standards and use a name that is short.. 2-20 characters.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
If you are using wireless use ethernet. Do the connection in full isolation from the rest of the network. You can plonk the TC right next to your imac.
Put the TC in router mode.. that is default after a factory reset.
Then reset you TM to access it.. this will do nothing to the existing backups. But one reason you can get the problem is the backups are corrupted.
See Pondini info A4 to reset TM and A5 to verify the backups.

A1 is also useful to get a bit more info out of obscure TM messages.

  • Time machine backup erased? HELP

After encountering hard drive problems with my mac air and getting new installed, went home to restore computer from time machine backup. Problem is: disk is there, but there are noe files! It´s like it is wiped clean. Was what happened to mac hard drive as well. They were not connected as the macbook problem occured, but can there be a link? Had just backed up hours before. Also stored old photo albums on the back up drive separate from the backup files. These are gone too. Is it likely EVERYTHING is gone??

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    diskutil list
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste (command-V) into the Terminal window.

  • After Mountain Lion update - problems synching contacts and accessing previous Time Machine backup

I have just set up a MacBoook Pro with a new SSD drive to replace the internal hard drive. I made sure I had a current Time Machine then connected the SSD drive externally and installed Mountain Lion. I installed the SSD drive into the computer. Before restoring applications from the Time Machine backup, I enabled the root user, logged on as that and deleted all other accounts as I have previously had issues with creating a new account from a backup and making that the 'home' user.
All went well except that a few seconds after I opened Contacts they all disappeared. They were replaced with two entries - one for Apple and one with the name of the home account.
I tried to retrieve Contacts from the Time Machine backup. I could see all the past dates but they were all red and inaccessible.
I looked at Contacts in my account at iCloud.com - they were the same 2 contacts as my local machine. I went through the installation process again but made sure that there was no connection to the Internet on completion. My contacts were intact. I exported them to a file and turned on the Internet. A few seconds later, my Contacts were gone..!
I imported from the backup I had made but, after a few seconds they were replaced with the two contacts from iCloud. Nothing I tried would allow me to add the contacts and have them synch to iCloud. I finally found a workaround:
    1  disconnect from the Internet
2  import Contacts from the export file
3  select all contacts (ctrl-A) and drag them to the 'on my mac' account in Contacts
4  connect the Internet and watch all the contacts disappear from the iCloud account
5  select all contacts from the 'on my mac' account adn drag them to the iCloud account.
6  watch them synch to iCloud
I still don't understand the problem - perhaps someone can enlighten me - but here's the workaround if someone is having the same problem.
And I still can't access the Time Machine backup that I used to setup the MacBook Pro. Looking at the files within the Time Machine the backup. it looks as though it is probably a permissions issue but I don't see why as the account I am using is the same name as the one used to create the backup. Any guidance would be appreciated.

I think you went about this the wrong way. ok....
Could you please try this... (1) Open Address Book - keep it as the main window.  (2) Enter Time Machine from the icon in the menu bar... do you have that icon? If not, Open System Preferences, Click Time Machine, put a check mark in Show Time Machine in Menu bar. Close System Preferences. Go back to your addressbook. Make it the primary application open. Now go to the icon in the menu bar that represents TimeMachine and click Enter Timemachine. You should see your stuff...
    if you dont...
    I would also try...
Open system preferenes. go to the icloud tab. sign out. then sign in.

  • Time machine backups visible but cannot access them to retrieve old photos.

    hello community.
i recently purchased a newish macbook pro. i restored it from a time machine backup with no problems.  i got a new computer because all my music and photos wouldnt fit. so the old photos i had backed up a few months ago (then deleted because of no space) werent put back on because of more recent backups i made then restored the new comp to. NOW. i cannot access the old time machine backups even though they are visible in the "star wars" screen when i enter time machine. i cannot click on a backup and retrieve those photos i had backed up ages ago but i can see all of them from about two years ago.
i have tried unplugging, verifying with the disk utility(all of which came up fine), and shouting. all of which do not work. any ideas? i feel like im missing something really simple.
    thanks!

In the Finder, right-click or control-click the folder icon and select
    Show View Options
from the contextual menu. In the dialog that opens, select None from the Arrange by menu. Close the dialog, enter Time Machine, and try again.
Another reason why items in a snapshot might not be selectable is that the time-travel view is open on a secondary display. Move it to the primary display, or if necessary, exit and disconnect the external display.

  • Hard drive issues due to Time Machine backup? Can't source the problem.

Last night my computer began to run extremely slow. All apps simultaneously lagged (spinning wheel of death), but then began working again after about 0.5-1 minute. This whole-system crash repeated about every 10 minutes a total of probably 5-6 times. The last time all apps stopped functioning and (CPU usage of iTunes was 85-95% for some reason (viewed using activity monitor), I am guessing due to its use of multiple hard drives as my music is stored on an external drive) and my computer just shut off after about 3 minutes of completely stalling. Rebooted computer and was left with an EXTREMELY slow system; opening up the quick menu (forgot the name, button on the top row of keyboard) for booting applications took 2-3 minutes. I eventually started disk utility, verified disk. It said I needed to repair disk by restarting my computer while holding down [Command] R message. Made sure i had a backup (at the time of that backup my computer was experiencing the problems above, 11:21pm), so I restarted whilst holding command R. Booted into the OSX utilities, retried the disk repair, received the "Disk Utility cannot repair this drive: back up as many files as you can..." message. Erased/reformatted my internal hard drive, and ran "repair disk" again; disk utility found no problems with the disk. Restored my files to my internal hard drive using OSX utilities (using the full system restore of the 11:21pm backup), and left it running while ran some errands. When I came back to look at my computer, it had attempted startup and crashed with the "kernel error" or whatever where all the text is on the left of the screen. It said something about not being able to find "disk2", which I believe was the disk containing OSX utilities (as veiwed in disk utility while running OSX utilities). Force shutdown, reboot with command R, wiped my internal drive again. Decided to only install a fresh version of OSX in an attempt to scan for viruses (using Sophos Antivirus, running scan as I am typing this), as the slow behavior of my computer had been very strange and began almost instantaneously (seemed like a virus/malware). No threats found so far with Sophos (scanning all my external drives too to source the problem in time machine backups), but I have deduced that there is something wrong with the most current Time machine backup, as it re-established the "problem" (easily fixed once drive is erased using OSX utilities) with my hard drive once I restored it to my internal hard drive. I am wondering (if it is not a virus) if I will need to repeat this whole process with every time machine backup to find where it went wrong, or if i can somehow pinpoint the problem easier. Will all of my Time Machine backups be corrupted now? Why would the Time Machine backup affect the state of the hard drive (does in need to be repaired or not)? Very confused at these random problems. If it is a virus (I will post the results of the Sophos antivirus scan as soon as it is finished), can I remove it from the backup and then restore it with no problems? What do you suggest I do? Will it make a difference to restore the most recent backup (11:21pm) using Migration assistant now that I am running a fresh install of OSX mountain lion? How can I source and eliminate the problem?

  • Problems with creating a Time Machine backup on external HDD

    Hello!
I tried to make a new Time Machine backup file on my external harddrive today.
Unfortunately it stopt after about 6 or 7 gb with the popup:
''the backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk. The problem may be temporary.  Try again later to back up.  If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk''
I'm certain that the HDD (Western Digital 1Tb) was correctly formatted (Mac Os Extended (Journaled)). It's the same type as my internal harddrive.
I also have a Time Machine Buddy logfile. Maybe that will help in finding the problem.
Also noticable is that after the backup failure, I can't seem to restore or format the external HDD. Once I connect it to a regular pcc and remove and reinstall the driver, I can use it again.
here is the logfile from the latest backup try:

  • When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?

I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot.  This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups.  It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up.  I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time.  I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much.  I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks.  The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks.  I have wasted more time than I care to.  I am think of going back to Windows.  I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem.  Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.

Allen Thanks for your reply.  All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner.  Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data.  I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection.  In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge.  There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem.  I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support.  I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space.  This might be a problem also.  However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive.  Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past.  This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period.  Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working.  Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions.  If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution.  The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it.  I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time.  I run it every few days.

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.
    1) Has one of the recent updates either on the AE (firmware) or OSX disabled this function?
No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
    2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.

I am trying to do a full Time Machine Backup to a new external disk. The backup starts, and it says "Time remaining about 4 days." That seems like a very long time, but the real problem is that the computer "logs off" after a few hours, and the backup stops. The system preferences are set to "Never" for Computer sleep and Display sleep. The computer does not ordinarily log off automatically, but it has done this twice since I started the Time Machine backup.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Trying to upgrade to Maverick but my disk has Time Machine backup so it cant and will not intall. How do I get around this problem?

I have a 13-inch MacBook Mid-2009 running on IOS X Lion and am trying to upgrade to Mavericks but after the download and starting installation the point where you choose which disk to use it says my hard drive is being used for Time Machine backups so it can not be used. I have turned off the Time Machine but do not know how to remove the backups from the hard drive. What do I do to get rid of the Time Machine backups I no longer actually need and install Mavericks? I have moved all my files to a separate terabyte hard drive but that drive does not have the GUID partition scheme to be used for installation. So I am stuck with one internal hard drive I cant use due to Time Machine and an external hard drive I cant use due to this GUID partition problem. How can I work around this and finally upgrade to Mavericks?

Click here and follow the instructions.

  • Problem with File Vault account after restoring from Time Machine Backup

my old 13" macbook 2.4 running OS X 10.5.4 was recently stolen and I've purchased a refurbished 13" macbook pro 2.66 running OS X 10.6. On booting up for the first time I restored from my Time machine backup (via setup assistant) and opted for migration of all files, applications, user profiles etc.
My main user (with admin privileges) is normally encrypted with File Vault but when I've tried to log in it's coming up with error(3) message. any ideas as to the problem and how to fix?

I can't find it! not sure what's going on but the only folder shown is the " Shared" folder.
Did you have only the one user account? If there were others, they should also be in the "Users" folder. You probably won't have access to the files inside them, but they should be there.
From what can make out, it looks like it's not backed up any of the files for the filevault account. Can't see user folder when looking through previous backups in Time Machine galaxy view.
Are you doing that from a Finder window set to your internal HD, or your computer name? It should look something like this (with the Finder in List view):
    |
    |
I'd been logging out and backing up manually on a regular basis.
Scheduled backups should run normally; but they won't back up the File Vault sparse bundle, nor will any run manually.
The only time it's backed-up is when you actually log out.
You should have seen this window on logout:
    |
    |
    followed by this one:
    |
    |
If you didn't see the second one, or cancelled it, the account wasn't backed-up.

  • How do I retrieve my Mail files from a Time Machine backup?

I reformatted my iMac hard rive because I was having all kinds of problems with speed and crashing.  I did a Time Machine backup and then reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Yosemite.  I then reinstalled fresh apps and all my files.  I just don't know where to find my email files on the backup.  I don't even know where to find them on my current system.  In older OS X systems, they were easily located under your user name.  Where'd they go?  Please help.

Open Finder then your user Library. You can get to your user Library from Finder/Go/Go To Folder and type ~/Library
Next, open the Mail folder; then click on the Time Machine icon in the Menu Bar and Enter Time Machine. This should open Time Machine to your ~/Library/Mail folder that you just opened. Now, you should be able to copy your V2 folder for what ever date that should have all your mailboxes.
