Time Machine backup wired ethernet - why so slow?

I have a new (Unibody/2008) Macbook Pro connected via wired ethernet to a new Time Capsule. As both are gigabit ethernet, I would have expected fairly quick backup speed but I'm only get about 10MB/s at most. Surely this should be quicker - can anyone suggest a way to speed it up?

Try turning off the AirPort card on your MBP just in case it is attempting to connect to the TC wirelessly.

My Time Machine backups are significantly larger, and slower, over WiFi than Ethernet

My regular hourly backups from my Time Capsule began acting up a month ago. They were abnormally large (25-100 MBs) and took a long time--once, six hours.
I connected my Time Capsule to my MacBook Air through ethernet to repair the disk through Disk Utility, (I turned Airport off on the Air, but not the Time Capsule), and then to rebuild the Spotlight index for the Time Capsule.
Backups over ethernet work just fine now. The backup will happen in two parts, of around 200 KB each, and take two or two and a half minutes. But when I turn Airport on the Air back on, reconnect to the WiFi network, unplug the ethernet cable, and immediately start a new backup over WiFi, the two parts balloon to around 20 MB each, and the backup takes hours.
This is a backup over ethernet, which took 2 minutes, 21 seconds:

Why are there two networks? Is that part of the problem? My Time Capsule is located about three feet right and a foot below my desk, so I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be 100% for both channels.
It's a dual-band router. As I understand it, OSX will pick the best signal.
I really want to know I have a clean, safe, accessible back-up before I replace it though. Right now I don't trust the Time Capsule.

If time machine backups hourly. Then why does it need to backup daily, seekly, and monthly?

It doesn't.
What it does is discard intermediate backups at the end of 24 hrs and keep just three spaced backups from the previous day.
At the end of the next day, that day's will be reduced to 3, and the previous 3 trimmed to one; the last backup of that day.
Daily backups are kept for a month, then trimmed to the last backup of the week.
The weekly backups are kept until the disc runs out of space and TM starts deleting the oldest ones.

Mountain Lion Time Machine backup to USB drive super slow

I recently upgraded the MacBook Air to Mountain Lion. The time machine backup is SUPER SLOW even when doing it on a USB 3.0 Drive. It currently showing 2 days for 100GB backup. I was able to copy the same 100 GB of files on to the same hard disk in less than 1 hr. This is so slow that i might be better off managing back ups manually or just writing a small script to do it. But before I do so wanted to check if anybody else has the same issues.

Update:
Turning off the spotlight on the external hard disk helped improve the speed dramatically. Brought it down from 1 GB in 1 hr to almost 1 GB / minute.
System Preferences --> Spotlight
Add the Drive to the exceptions list. It will say this is a time machine disk so except the time machine folder everything else will be added to the exception list. Say Yes and thats it !!!
Now says 19hrs still a lot according to me but much better than 2 days.
Any body has any additional tips /tricks please share !!

Keep an eye on subsequent backups -- if they take a long time, and/or show "indexing backup" on the Time Machine preferences panel for very long, you may need to delete it, so OSX can recreate it. See the pink box in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting for instructions.

Yes, that's quite slow, especially if your Mac supports USB 3.
If it doesn't, it should be running at USB 2 speeds, which for a full backup should be, very roughly, 40-50 GB/hour.

Time Machine backup via ethernet to Time Capsule

I need to replace my 5 year old FireWire hard disk. I'm considering a Time Capsule and would connect it to my main Mac via ethernet.
Will my iMac see the Time Capsule disk and mount it on the desktop? And can I use it for Time Machine backups when connected with ethernet (rather than AirPort)?
I assume Time Capsule will do the above, but would like to hear from users who's used it like this. Thanks!

I would have to disagree with Smokerz. I've had repeated problems backing up to my airdisk through my AEBS when my computer was connected via an ethernet cable. Backups would go fine for a week or so, then suddenly the DMG wouldn't mount. There was no way to successfully repair it, and I'd have to start over again.
I have several computers on my network, and they were all backing up just fine, except mine, which was connecting with a cable. The others were backing up wirelessly with no problems.
Finally, on a hunch, I disconnected my ethernet cable from my AEBS and opted for using my Airport card. It seemed silly since the computer is right next to the AEBS, but it has been working for nearly a month with no significant errors.
(Before someone asks, I did not have the Airport connection running simultaneously with the ethernet connection. I used only one at a time, and I had them correctly configured with good, working equipment.)

Old time machine backup prayed out, why?

Hi Not very technically minded. I did a total erase of my HDD i was not worried because i have a 2TB WD time machine backup. When i try to go to that to restore certain files i have problems as described. When entered Time Machine i got the star wars effect but i could only go back to the start of the latest install. I then entered TM via system preferences and it states the oldest backup date but when i select disk its not there. If i then go into options my other external HD's are showing as is my old TM, however only the TM is greyed out.
Why and how to do access this? Any help would be gratefully appreciated as this is where all my music and films are stores.

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.
If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user Library folder, first select a snapshot, then press shift-command-G. A Go to Folder dialog will open. In it, you'll enter the path to the folder. The dialog will help you by automatically completing the parts of the path when you start to type them.
The path begins with slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts will be separated by slashes.
The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a "2", and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right-arrow key to jump to the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next part.
Next is the name of the volume (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you gave it a different name.) Start to type that, then jump to the end and enter a slash.
The next part is "Users", followed by a slash.
Next is your (short) user name, which is also the name of your home folder.
Finally, enter "Library", then press return. You should now be in the Library folder. From there you can get around as in the Finder.

How do I convert my Time Machine backup from ethernet to wireless?

I'm doing my first backup of 300+ GB via wired ethernet to save time and then covert the Time Capsule back to wireless and it seems to start over again. Help!

Are you trying to merge your data into an existing accout? or are you just trying to restore it so you can use it?
If the latter, just create a new account on the iMac (System Preferences -> Accounts), then log into that account. Hold the Option key when you select the Time Machine icon in the menu bar and choose the 'Browse other bacup disks...' option. This will let you connect to another user's backup and restore your data.

Time Machine backups to networked drive - TOO slow?

Overwhelmed by the sheer amount of hits when searching for these keywords (I don't have time to read them all), I will post my question here hoping that someone has mercy on my soul... :-)
I read the whole FAQ by Pondini (thanks!) but still need some help...
I have:
1 rMBP (OSX 10.8.4) with a 512Gb SSD and
1 MBP Early 2009 (OSX 10.6.8) with a 500Gb HD with a 2TB data HD attached by USB2
1 MacMini Late 2009 (OSX 10.6.8) with a 320Gb being used as a HomeTheater
that I will like to backup to a 4TB USB3 drive I just bought, attached to the same MacMini (so USB2 speed)
The 4TB drive is partitioned in 3: 1.5Gb for each portable and 1Gb for the Mini (Setup following Pondini's recommendations)
My wifi network is served by an Asus RT-N16 router (802.11n)
First I started the TM Machine of the MacMini and it went fine: Initial backup of bout 240Gb took a couple of hours.
But then I started the backup of the rMBP and the time estimation of the calculated 254Gb was........ 168 DAYS!....
So I stopped it and I am making the initial backup locally (It's almost finished in about 1 hour) and then I will follow Pondini's instructions to convert this "local" TM backup to a "networked" one.
My question is: Do I need to be worried that my intended system will be to slow to be feasible? I mean, I know that incremental backups will be faster...but will my setup be usable?

The initial estimate of time remaining can be wildly inaccurate.

Slow 10.8 time machine backup to wired network

I have a MacPro with a big backup drive and a MacBook Pro that backs up to it over a wired network. Ever since I upgraded to ML, my backups have been extremely slow. [An incremental of 70 MB can take a few hours. A full backup reports weeks, and gets slower and slower. I've aborted after 30 days and 50% complete.]
I plugged in a drive directly and that worked fine.
I've tried lots of things I've read about in multiple places: repairing disks and permissions, resetting time machine, turning off spotlight and antivirus. I'm not sure what else to try.
One thing to note: If I mount the sparse backup image volume manually and copy a large (1GB) file to it, it seems to work fine. However, when TM is running it appears to get slower and slower. It becomes extremely slow to access both in the finder and in the terminal [like minutes if I type ls].
Any suggestions offered would be greatly appreciated.

After a safe boot, TM still isn't working normally. It does usually work, it is just glacially slow (backing up over wired gigabit ethernet).
On my just-backed-up laptop, I made a 2GB file from /dev/random. It took about 5 hours for TM to complete.
Note that if I manually mount the backup drive and copy the file, it copies in about a minute.
This is my trimmed log during the TM backup.
I've deleted the following from the log to shorten it:

Time Machine backup slow (not first backup) - Why?

Hi, I recently purchased a new 3TB backup drive to backup my iMac system (10.9.4).
I set up a Time Machine backup of my system + external HD, and began scheduled backups about a week ago. As expected the first backup took several hours (overnight) since it was backing up nearly 1TB of data. Subsequent backups were fast and everything seemed fine.
Then, last night I ran a backup and Time Machine began to copy ALL the data again. The backup took 6-7 hours. Why would it do this if it uses a cumulative system where most of the data is already on the backup drive? Did this occur because I manually started the backup (by selecting"Back Up Now" in Time Machine on the toolbar). Or is something wrong?

Open Time Machine Preferences>click "Select Disk">click on the appropriate TM disk under the bottom window titled "Available Disks." Force a backup and see if it works. If this doesn't fix it reboot your iMac and/or Time Capsule and try forcing a backup again once the iMac and/or TC have fully booted up.

Time machine backups have slowed considerably since my installation of Mavericks -- why?

Ever since installation of Mavericks, time machine backups have slowed to a crawl. The message preparing backup used to to take 10 seconds to a minute, now it takes 5 minutes. The status of the backup used to show 10mb's of 80 mb's backed up, and take under 1 minute, now it takes 5 minutes. Finally cleaning up notice, and the time to clean up has increased significantly. My backups go to an external HD (7200rpm) connected vis firewire 800, that has approx 180 gigabytes available of its 1 terrabybyte capacity.

I upgraded to Mountain Lion a few weeks ago. Everything was fine with Time Machine until a few of days ago.
Same problem others described: extremely slow, taking hours to back up just a few MB.
I verified the Time Capsule drive and my Mac hard drive - no problems found.
I then erased the Time Capsule and started Time Machine. It did the full backup in a fairly reasonable amount of time (several hours, but not unexpectedly long).
When it started its first incremental backup, it reverted to the same problem: extremely slow, but it did finish eventually.
I then shut down the Mac and restarted (power cycled) the Time Capsule. Then I started up the Mac and told Time Machine to back up now. It backed up 30+ MB in just a few minutes, so it seems back to normal. We'll see how it goes when the next scheduled backup starts up.
But you might try rebooting the Time Capsule (and your Mac).
By the way, when it was in the middle of the extremely slow backup, I disabled Norton Anti-virus and it didn't seem to speed it up any. But I left it disabled after I rebooted the Time Capsule and had a successful incremental backup, so I'm not sure yet if Norton is a factor.

Time machine backup keeps going up - slow over via airport extreme

I have a 2tb external drive that ive just connected to my airport extreme, purely to use for time machine backups.
I realise the first backup will take a while, my hard drive currently has 810GB of data on it according to the mac itself. When i first started the backup time machine said the backup was 865GB, however its now been going for over 4 days and still hasnt completed, its on about 830gb now, but it keeps going up, its now saying 830gb of 920gb completed.
So why does the backup take a ridiculous amount of time (the MBP is plugged into the airport via ethernet, then the drive to airport via usb) i thought using ethernet directly to the airport would speed it up, its purely over cable so why is it so slow?
And why is my backup now saying its 920gb when my hard drive only has 810gb in total of data?

That's one Apple's more infuriating messages, but there's usually another phrase after "Time Machine Error."
Most likely, Time Machine is having a problem with a file, but they don't bother to tell you that.

It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it. If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, what you've done, and the results.

When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?

I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot. This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups. It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up. I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time. I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much. I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks. The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks. I have wasted more time than I care to. I am think of going back to Windows. I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem. Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.

Allen Thanks for your reply. All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner. Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data. I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection. In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge. There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem. I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support. I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space. This might be a problem also. However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive. Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past. This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period. Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working. Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions. If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution. The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it. I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time. Time Machine backup painfully slow all of a sudden

For some reason my time machine backups have become painfully slow for some reason. They were fine earlier today, then IIRC I booted windows, then booted back into OSX to run a backup. Despite there being only 1 or two changes (files added to the system) time machine began "preparing backup" by going through all the files on my HDD! Now, it is backing up, but at the rate of about 5 Kb/s!
Something is wrong. I've tried deleting the progress file in the backup folder and "resetting" TM by deselecting the backup drive and selecting it again. Nothing worked. Why would TM be so slow all of a sudden?
Has anyone any ideas?

That is a bit suspicious, but not necessarily wrong. Something caused it to think about 16 GB had been changed (it adds 20% for the "padding" in the message).
How are you running Windoze? Is it on a separate partition? If you're running it via virtualization software, with the vm file on an OSX disk but excluded from TM, that's a possible explanation.

Those counts are nearly always very high, and sometimes crazy high. There's some indication it's counting all the metadata, extended attributes, etc., as separate files.
If in doubt, boot up from your Install disc and do a +*Repair Disk+* on your boot volume. Then reboot normally and run another backup. That should trigger a "deep traversal," where TM will compare everything on your system with it's backups, to be sure it's got everything it should.
