Time Machine Backups have gone missing

I am trying to troubleshoot a TM issue and I could use some help. I recently made some major changes to iPhoto in an attempt to get rid of some very large duplicate iphoto libraries. I made sure I had a valid TM backup and then I began the process. After making some big changes using iPhoto Library Manager, I tried to do another backup with TM and got the following message:
"This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 144.70 GB but only 68.78 GB are available."
I am backing up to a firewire 500GB external drive. The same drive that I have been backing up to for at least a year with no interuptions or errors. The drive is only used to back up this computor. (iMac 266,10.7.5).
Finder shows only one successful backp folder and one ".inprogress" file even though I have been backing up to this drive for a long time. Curious, I went in to Time Machine to look at the time line and it concurs with the Finder window: only one backup available.
My question is what happened to the rest of my previous backups and is there a way to look back and see what happened to them? Would TM overwrite all the older files? I am afraid that I need to back up my backups. Soon I will need 6 different externals to cover all the backups! Luckily I haven't lost anything yet.
I did do a disk check on the external drive (with DU) and found no errors or other problems.
Is Time Machine becoming less reliable as our hard drives get bigger??
Thanks in advance for any help or advice you may provide.
Capt Ron

Ah! The proverbial missing information. In that case, I can't help further, since I don't use TM. If the FAQs and troubleshooting sections don't discuss your issue, you'll have to wait for a TM maven to pop in.

  • Time machine backups have slowed considerably since my installation of Mavericks -- why?

Ever since installation of Mavericks, time machine backups have slowed to a crawl.  The message preparing backup used to to take 10 seconds to a minute, now it takes 5 minutes.  The status of the backup used to show 10mb's of 80 mb's backed up, and take under 1 minute, now it takes 5 minutes.  Finally cleaning up notice, and the time to clean up has increased significantly.  My backups go to an external HD (7200rpm) connected vis firewire 800, that has approx 180 gigabytes available of its 1 terrabybyte capacity.

I upgraded to Mountain Lion a few weeks ago. Everything was fine with Time Machine until a few of days ago.
Same problem others described: extremely slow, taking hours to back up just a few MB.
I verified the Time Capsule drive and my Mac hard drive - no problems found.
I then erased the Time Capsule and started Time Machine. It did the full backup in a fairly reasonable amount of time (several hours, but not unexpectedly long).
When it started its first incremental backup, it reverted to the same problem: extremely slow, but it did finish eventually.
I then shut down the Mac and restarted (power cycled) the Time Capsule. Then I started up the Mac and told Time Machine to back up now. It backed up 30+ MB in just a few minutes, so it seems back to normal. We'll see how it goes when the next scheduled backup starts up.
But you might try rebooting the Time Capsule (and your Mac).
By the way, when it was in the middle of the extremely slow backup, I disabled Norton Anti-virus and it didn't seem to speed it up any. But I left it disabled after I rebooted the Time Capsule and had a successful incremental backup, so I'm not sure yet if Norton is a factor.

  • Time machine backup files gone and can't create new backup

Last week I noticed on my Time Machine backup HD that the Backup.backupdb files were gone.  Also I am unable to complete backups any longer.  I get an error "The backup disk image “/Volumes/Time Machine-2/walle.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1)."
This Volume "Time Machine" is connected to an Airport Extreme 7.6.1. I have ejected the disk, disconnected all users, cycled the power on my computer (2.26Ghx MacBook running 10.7.5), Airport, and HD. All it does after I eject is that it give the Volume a new number...ie instead of "Time Machine" it becomes "Time Machine-1"...then "Time Machine-2" and repeates the error message with the new name.  So I cannot start a new backup because of the above error on top of not being able to find my old files.
    Thanks for the help

Hmmm.. sorry to jump in but...
I Wish I had seen this before I got mine.
Mine has been doing this auto eject stuff too.
I think I just plugged it in and TM let me select it but is it possible
I should have reformatted it with DU first, like with all the WD drive problems ?
Is it too late for that ?
Or just try to return it or get rid of it ?
    TIA

  • Time machine backup history gone

I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4 on a MacBook Pro. I do time machine backups regularly to a Synology NAS (behind a Fritz Box router).
This worked well all the time. The last backup has been made last Thursday before I went into weekend.
Today I suddenly got the message that my backup is 230 days old, so I started to investigate, since this can't be.
TM says, first and last backup are from February 3rd 2014.
When I mount TM I also only get this choice to restore data from, so I aborted.
Looking at the logs from today I get the following kernel and backupd related lines:

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't the answer you want. I know Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to keep using the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

  • Time Machine backup photos gone, Time Machine backup photos gone

This morning my iphoto library disappeared. I was looking at it and all was well, I exited iphoto, decided to empty the trash bin, hit empty trash, attempted to get back into iphoto, and when I did I was faced with the message "Please choose a library." However, there was nothing listed for me to choose. I searched my entire harddrive for my iphoto library and it is nowhere to be found. I find a file that has 1.1 GB in it, but it is not my photos. I had about 8,000 photos.
So I think, no worries I will restore from Time Machine backups on my external harddrive. BUT...I plug it into my computer and the backups all look as my computer does now! They are not from history...it is the same 1.1 GB message for iphoto and when I click restore it says copying and then nothing happens!
    PLEASE HELP! I AM PANICKED.

Do you still have your original library that started this problem? If so use Time Machine to bring forward the last backup before the problem happened. Do not replace the current library with the backup but select the option to keep both.
Open the recovered library and drag out the Library6.iPhoto file to the desktop and move the rest of the recovered library to the trash. Open your original library and replace the Library6.iPhoto with the file from the recovered library. See if iPhoto will open and recognize your photos now.
If you had any imports between the time of the last backup and your current library they will not be recognized in the library but will be inside the library non the less. You can find their event folder in the Originals folder, move it to the desktop to reimport.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How many GB does a typical Time Machine backup have?

I have always backep up my Mac to a 500GB external USb hard drive (Seagate, pretty small). It is only filled up about 90 GB so far and its been about a year. (my backups are NOT every day, mostly every two weeks. Every backup is about 2-3 GB and takes 10-15 minutes to complete.
I recently got a Seagate GoFlex Home for wireless backups. However, my first backup says over 200 GB to back up with a wait itme of 7-8 hours. This doesn't seem right... Am I doing something wrong?
I also still haven't found out a way to transfer my old Time Machine Backups to the new GoFlex.
It's backing up right now, and I am continuing to do so until I get a reply that says I shouldn't be. If anyone has an answer, please reply A.S.A.P.
    Please Help.
    Thanks in advance.

Well I cancelled this backup already, to figure out the prolem first.
Via the Widget, this is what i have so far:
    Starting manual backup
Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://[email protected]/GoFlex%20Home%20Backup
Mounted network destination at mount point: /Volumes/GoFlex Home Backup-1 using URL: afp://[email protected]/GoFlex%20Home%20Backup
Disk image /Volumes/GoFlex Home Backup-1/Andrew's Mac.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups
Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Andrew_MAC
Deep event scan at path:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
    Finished scan
Found 60626 files (195.01 GB) needing backup
235.04 GB required (including padding), 1.66 TB available
Copied 26836 files (1.62 GB) from volume Andrew_MAC.
    Backup canceled.
Ejected Time Machine disk image: /Volumes/GoFlex Home Backup-1/Andrew's Mac.sparsebundle
    Ejected Time Machine network volume.
Could the 200 GB backup be because i changed the name of my home folder and now its backing up the permissions changes of all of the files?

  • Time Machine backups have become very slow

My time machine backups to a USB attached external drive (dedicated to backups) have recently slowed horribly.  They are taking timeframes like 30 minutes to even an hour even when nothing has changed on my system.  They didn’t do that previously (usually just a couple of minutes for same).
Console ouput below.  I see MDS errors.  What are those?  Are they a concern?
I have run Disk Utility on both my hard drive and the time machine drive and they look okay.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find . $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • Problem moving Time Machine backup in Mavericks (missing "Ignore ownership on this volume")

In order to move Time Machine backup it is necessary to Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" at the bottom of the "Sharing & Permissions:" section is not checked.
However, this option has disappeared from Volume info window after upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.
Any idea how I can find this?
    Thank you.

Once you're in the TM interface you will see a basically normal Finder window (with a lot of weird graphics, hence its other name The Star Wars interface )
On the right of the screen is the timeline allowing you to move backward and forward in time. Once you find what you want you can select the files or folders and restore.
As in the normal Finder multiple selections are allowed. I suggest you play around with it a bit at first and try restoring a file or a few files or folders just to get a feel for it.
    good luck
    regards

  • Time Machine backup set is missing some files

Today I noticed that some files I last worked on in August have disappeared from my computer. They were pdfs, word and vectorworks (cad) files in different folders – they could not have been accidently trashed. They were active work files from May until late August so they should have been backed up by Time Machine sometime in the past few months. But when I browse the backup sets these files are nowhere to be seen (and of course my daily Superduper bootable clone doesn't have the files either).
The external usb hard drive for Time Machine and the computer are clean according to disk utility, and I've run Onyx a few times to fix permissions.
Does anyone know why files would disappear from both the computer hard drive and the backup sets?

    peterkhill wrote:
Thanks for your response. I know it's a mystery.
The files - in some version or other – should be in one of the backup sets, but they aren't. Time Machine hasn't started to delete old backups, as there's plenty of space on the external drive.
Not true. Time Machine "thins" backups normally, regardless of space.
As noted on the TM Preferences panel, it keeps one backup per week for as long as there's room; one per day (the first) for a month; all others for 24 hours. Every time it does a backup, it does "post backup thinning," deleting "expired" backups. So, depending on how long something was on your internal HD before being deleted, and just when various backups were performed, copies of deleted items can disappear as early as 24 hours, or as late as your oldest backup.
I've checked the backups with Timechecker
Do you mean TimeTracker? If not, and it's useful, do you have a link?
and it seems these missing files were never backed up, even when similar files in other folders nearby have been backed up properly.
The Do not back up box is as it should be in Timemachine - the files should have been backed up.
But then the files should still be on the internal HD too.
All I can think of is that the files themselves must have been corrupted somehow, but they are different file types, completed on different days, before and after files that appear to be OK on the internal and on the TM backup. And they must have been corrupted in a way that means that they cannot be found on either the internal HD or in the backup sets.
This is not something I've seen before (and I read at least the title of every thread here). The only thing I can think of is some sort of directory corruption that caused the originals to disappear, and the backups then, eventually, were deleted in the normal fashion.
By the way, I'm not running FileVault.
Do you know of any good data recovery applications?
The one I see here the most is +Data Rescue II.+ I can't recommend for or against it, not having used any of them. They are expensive, and there's no guarantee, although some have a free trial mode that will tell you if anything is recoverable, and perhaps let you recover one file.
Check Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com for +Data Recovery.+ Make certain whatever you get is compatible with Leopard.
Let us know if you have any success.

  • Upgraded to snow leopard and now all my time machine backups are gone

Could this be related to the upgrade? This backup is fine as I have nothing to recover, but I don't understand why time machine won't perform an incremental backup. There are 340GB on the disk with 160GB available. The error message I receive is "This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 275.15 GB but only 160.90 GB are available." Shouldn't back up just be making an incremental backup (erasing GBS?)

Normally, yes. How did you do the upgrade? If you erased your HD, installed Snow Leopard and used +Setup Assistant, Migration Assistant,+ or just drag & drop to restore your data, everything on the disk is considered changed, so Time Machine must do a full backup.
The 275 GB figure includes about 20% for workspace, so the estimated size of the actual backup is about 230 GB.
If that's a full backup, see #D3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for the common causes.
If it's not a full one, see #D4 there.

  • Time Machine backups have not worked since upgrade to Lion OS X

I get the following error message when trying to use Time Machine - "The backup was not performed because an error occurred whilecopying files to the backup disk.  The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. Ifthe problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk."

Not one of Apple's better messages.
It's having a problem with a particular file, but there's no hint of that.
See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Add'l ideas to cure slow Time Machine backup

Over the past 10 days, the average duration of my Time Machine backups has gone from 1 minute to :42-:45 minutes. There's been no significant shift in my computing behavior during that time. To fix, I've tried nearly everything recommended in Pondini's terrific site -- can you see something that I've overlooked?
    * iMac8,1 4GB, running OS X 10.6.8
    * TM drive: Seagate GoFlex 1TB, 30 days old, was freshly formatted and 100% dedicated to TM; have tested both Firewire and USB; 356GB used
    * Fusion virtual machines excluded from TM via Preferences
    * no virus program running
Review of backupd items in system.log shows, after the first few weeks of speedy TM backups, a gradual decay -- can't pinpoint a cliff (that could be blamed on an installation, etc.) And there's no other TM-related messages ("deep traversal," etc) in the log. When I watch Activity Monitor during a TM cycle, I see low CPU usage by TM, and slow read/write speeds for disk activity.
    Yes, I have:
    * repaired permissions (frequently)
    * done disk verify and repair on both internal and TM drives (nothing found)
    * set drives to "no sleep"
    * disabled Spotlight
    * relaunched Finder (and, of course, rebooted the whole system)
    * tested in Safe Mode (no improvement)
    * run daily/weekly/monthly maintenance scripts and purged caches, using Cocktail (Ironically, it got dramatically worse yesterday after I did this!)
No, I have not yet reformatted the TM drive, nor reinstalled 10.6.8. Am I forgetting something else?
    thx

Many years everything with TimeMachine was fine. No problems, no effort. Works quiet and effectiv in the background.
2 months ago I recognised first changes. TM needs long and longer. Thousands of files - big number with low volume - TM copied to my external HDD. "Preparation" and "reworking"  take a long time.
I controlled the backup with TimeTracker - a much smaller number of files was listed.
    I read other threads:

and jump to Pandinis website. No success with this.

  • Time Machine Backups Yosemite

    Hi there
Ever since upgrading to Mavericks and then to Yosemite, the Time Machine backups have been a mess to try get them running. I did eventually with Mavericks but unable to get it going on Yosemite.
Here's the thing: It keeps telling me the drive is full. For the last week, its been telling me there is just over 2GB left on the drive. This is on a 1Tb drive that has two MACs backing up to it. If I check the sparsebundle files, the data only adds up to less than half the drive's size.
I then followed some steps I used last time around and mounted the disk in Disk Utility and ran a verify on it...all is good with it and then suddenly it showed there is more than 70% of the drive capacity available. I enable Time Machine again and went and selected the disk but it shows 20gb available this time. See the attached screenshots of the Disk Utility as well as the Time Machine versions of the disk space available.
I cannot format the drive, thats just not an option. Any suggestions please as this laptop has gone two weeks without a backup and its the owner of our company's MAC with vital vital information on it.

Sorry, forgot to add the pics...and cannot edit my original post.

  • File Sharing drops regularly, Time Machine Backups are delayed on OSX 10.7.3. Solution?

    Hi there folks,
I'm having an issue with the new 10.7 server. We're running 10.7.3 Server on an Late 2006 XServe with 10GB RAM , connected to a Drobo Pro for Time Machine Backups of our 50+ users via our internal network.
Recently, Time Machine backups have been getting delayed, stating that they can't connect up to the backup drive (which is out Drobo Pro handling 16TB of space). The Drobo Pro hass not unmounted, and all the IP Addresses coming from and going to the Server handling the backups will still ping.
We've also be having trouble with Server resident drives and shared folders that people can mount using the ⌘+K shortcut or "Connect to Server" option in finder. People will choose the IP address, and finder will think for a few minutes then give an error stating that it cannot connect the the specified IP. The only way I can reestablish connection to the file sharing through a remote computer is to remote or physically login to the server, then go into System Preferences and turn "File Sharing" off, then on again. After that, the ⌘+K on a remote machine can find the drives again.
It's driving me crazy why this is ocurring. I don't know why, and people in the office are beginning to complain that they can't access certain files on the servers or are worried because their backups are not completeing.
It should also be known that a majority of the machines we have in the ofice are still running 10.6.8, with only a handful on 10.7, as we haven't had the time to make the major switchover yet.
I'm not the best when it comes to server software or Unix CLI managment (the office outsourced our Network Admin to the east coast), so I'm a bit stumped.
Does anyone have any suggestions to try? Is there a link between the number of Time Machine Users and the connection failures? Should I just tel the NetAdmin to create a script that will restart the File Sharing protocol on the server every couple of hours?
Hopefully someone will be able to help.
    Thanks,
    JYHASH

I started having connectivity issues to my 10.6.8 server from my 10.7 client immediately after updating the client to 10.7.3. FWIW. Takes forever to connect, when it does. After just milliconds before.

  • Time Machine backup painfully slow all of a sudden

For some reason my time machine backups have become painfully slow for some reason. They were fine earlier today, then IIRC I booted windows, then booted back into OSX to run a backup. Despite there being only 1 or two changes (files added to the system) time machine began "preparing backup" by going through all the files on my HDD! Now, it is backing up, but at the rate of about 5 Kb/s!
Something is wrong. I've tried deleting the progress file in the backup folder and "resetting" TM by deselecting the backup drive and selecting it again. Nothing worked. Why would TM be so slow all of a sudden?
    Has anyone any ideas?

    iBookguy wrote:

Copied 105384 files (7.2 MB) from volume Mac OSX.
That is a bit suspicious, but not necessarily wrong. Something caused it to think about 16 GB had been changed (it adds 20% for the "padding" in the message).
How are you running Windoze? Is it on a separate partition? If you're running it via virtualization software, with the vm file on an OSX disk but excluded from TM, that's a possible explanation.
105384 files in only 7.2mb? I doubt it...something seems fishy
Those counts are nearly always very high, and sometimes crazy high. There's some indication it's counting all the metadata, extended attributes, etc., as separate files.
If in doubt, boot up from your Install disc and do a +*Repair Disk+* on your boot volume. Then reboot normally and run another backup. That should trigger a "deep traversal," where TM will compare everything on your system with it's backups, to be sure it's got everything it should.
