Time Machine Backups of Pages file cannot be opened by Pages

I just restird a backup of a Pages file from my Time Machine backup volume. It's not a Pages file! Finder jusy says it's a document and if I double click it, a folder is created with the same name as the file with a number appended. There are sevarla files in the folder - none of them can be opened by Pages.
I'm aware of the Preference to save a backup copy but that saves just one copy, not a tru backup.
Is there some way round this? I'm not inclined to use a product if I can't back up it's files safely.

It's what I assumed.
An iWork document created with the format introduced by iWork '09 is in fact a folder packed with a specific tool.
If we remove the name extension, the system can't guess that it's an iWork document.
According to the structure of the file, it recognize it as an archive and it unpack it.
It's a variant of what I do when I want to study the contents of the index.xml file describing a document.
In my scheme, I rename wxyz.pages as wxyz.pages.zip
When I unpack it, I get a document wxyz.pages which is a Pages document in the old structure.
When Time Machine give you a document entitled wxyz, it's important to add the extension name by yourself.
If you forget and expand the beast as a folder, nothing is lost. Just rename the folder waxy as waxy.pages and Pages will open it.
From my point of view, the fact that Time Machine return a document without its name extension is a bug in Time Machine.

I've been working yesterday and today on a report for a customer in pages with many graphs. Tonight, I planned to finish the report, but Pages can't open the document anymore. I've tried many things:
- Open it in Pages via 'open documents'
- Open it in Pages via recent documents
- Open via Finder
- Sent file via mail and open it in mail
- Open document via Dropbox
- Open document on iPad via Dropbox
Nothing works, Pages keeps saying it can't open the document
I'm working on the same computer as where I made the document and quit Pages (and the document) in the normal way. How can this document be corrupted???
For the maximum of bad luck: I always use Time Machine, but yesterday the back up file for Time Machine was too large so it was not finished. The back up of Time Machine I've got was made AFTER I saved the document, so Time Machine also has a corrupted version of the file...
I also use Dropbox, but Dropbox does not seem to be able to restore files in the Pages-format
Is there anything I can do to restore the document with it's graphs?

A miracle happened: I was able to restore the Pages-document via Dropbox!
It was a bit complicated, but I'll explain how I did it for all the others with the same problem:
1. Go to finder on your Mac and right-click the document
2. Click on 'Dropbox' and then on 'show deleted versions'. Now you see a package (on the Dropbox in your browser, which will open automatically) with all different files. What to do? Do this:
3. Click on the little triangle at the right en of the file with the name 'index.xml.gz'
4. Select 'previous versions' and click on the file of the moment in time you want to restore.
Now the magic happens: the part of the package will be restored on your Mac. Try to open the corrupt Pages document again on your computer and... it works!

The best thing to do would be to start over. Use Setup Assistant this time.
Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:

Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

What happens if you Time-Machine backup an encrypted file-vault HD?

This is related to my previous post - but deserves special mention for those people who are using time-vault AND Time-Machine.
My question is this: If the backup of my Hard-drive is encrypted, and I then reinstall from backup, what will this situation likely produce?
This is what I have done. I also Archived and installed my Mac prior to installing from my Time-Machine backup.
I now have an error message that displays the following message at the login screen:
"Unable to log into the file-vault account "......." at this time. An error has occurred."
My password IS CORRECT. I have not changed it, and the log in window does accept my password, but it doesn't progress any further than the error message I gave above.
I'm wondering if the encryption process of file-vault is linked directly with the original installation I had of Mac OS-X before I Archived and installed.
Any thoughts/knowledge/Insight?? I want my old Mac back! (I don't recommend using file-vault). Any body else had this problem or can see what is happening to me here?

I just did a backup, moved a folder with 600mb of images into a different folder, and did another backup. The free space on the backup drive dropped by the size of the folder's contents. The backup copied the files as I watched in System Preferences, and it looked like it was really copying the files to the external drive again. It looks like Time Machine isn't as smart as I hoped in this regard.
Still - I'd think the wasted space is only in the every-hour-for-the-last-24-hours bucket of Time Machine. I'm guessing the every hour backups are like a sliding window, where a backup that's 24 hours old drops out every hour rather than all the hourly backups getting wiped at midnight and starting over.
Regardless, only one version of the moved folder will eventually be stored as the daily backup for that day. I don't have proof, but that's what I think.
So, if you've moved a bunch of folders around or renamed them, the extra copies of the same exact files should drop off within 24 hours.
That's my interpretation, but I'm in no way positive!! The lengthy Ars review didn't offer an answer to this question.

Is it possible to reassemble a Time Machine backup from recovered files?

I have kind of a sad story that I'm sure some of you can relate to. My Macbook was briefly stolen but by the time I got it back, the partitions had been erased. I had an external backup... but the backup disk failed catastrophically a couple days before it was stolen. The external backup doesn't even mount anymore and makes grinding noises if it's plugged in...
The MacBook had two hard drives in it and one was rather large, so there was space for a partition that I used only for Time Machine. It was erased during the theft, but since nothing had been written to the disk yet, I figured that the chances of recovering data were pretty high. So I went online and looked around for utilities (I used StellarPhoenix... Not sure I'd recommend it to a friend) and managed to spend the next four days recovering the time machine backup to an external computer. I recovered a lot of directories with raw directory IDs attached to them and interesting recovered files inside.
I want to put these files back together as a Time Machine backup (haha, I know right?), because the alternative is around 60 gigabytes of data to sift through by hand.
Here's the top level structure:

.journal is 33 megs of unicode-looking data that I have to believe is the HFS+ "Journal" part of a journaling file system.
.journal_info_block appears to be an empty file.
.fseventsd contains only a few tiny files that appear to be the the heads of .plists.
Anyway.
The HFS+ folder looks like this:

Each of these directories seems to contain a few files that I'd want to keep, and Stellar Phoenix tells me that it recovered a couple million files total. A bit of "light reading" into the HFS+ file system suggests that HFS+ uses these integer file descriptors instead of file names, and that the file names are stored elsewhere?
I've looked around on the web for anybody who's had a similar problem and have yet to find anything. It'd be really neat if all you had to do was create a new .sparsebundle and throw all the files into it, but I somehow doubt that'd work...
I'm really concerned that I can't put humpty dumpty back together again at all.
If I can't, what would be the next best thing? I've considered copying the files back to the drive and letting Spotlight chew on them. Eventually, I would probably be able to find the most important files on the drive. But I would prefer something more user friendly than that.
Oh, and feel free to suggest your favorite online backup solution.

Accidentally I have deleted my Time Machine Backup but deleted files are in the Trash !

Accidentally deleted my Time Machine backkups but all files are in the Trash. I am copying my files from Trash folder to another Portable Drive just incase I will not be able to restore my files as Put Back is not working because seems Time Machine backups is a part large database.
Is there anyway I can restore the files to Time Machine again? If there is, could you please tell me step by step ! If there is not any procedures, please advise me what should I do in this stage?

Time Machine backup fails linking files

I recently had a external disk fail that was still under warrenty, so I dually went to the Apple store and got a replacement. After plugging it in I went into Time Machine and performed a restore (I was backing up the external disk to another external time machine managed disk). All worked perfectly so far. However, come the next backup I got
"Time Machine Error Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while linking files on the backup volume"
Searching the forums I don't see any obvious solution. In the system log I also see 'Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: MyBigDisk' every time there is a backup.
Anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

Ok, I finally figured this out. The problem is that the old and new disks both had the same name (MyBigDisk) and time machine was getting consused. To fix
Complete the restoration of the drive via timemachine
Rename the drive (on Leopard in finder under devices ctrl-click / right-click on the name and rename)
Go into time machine preferences and remove the drive from the exclusion list
Perform a Time Machine backup
This will re-backup the freshly restored external drive but this isn't a big issue as older files will be deleted from Time Machine as necessary.
Restoring files on the external disk from before the failure: Now the drive is renamed the older backups seem to have disappeared. Actually, they are there, just tricky to find. To find an old file on the old named disk:
Go into finder and make sure show path bar is selected
Go to you home directory in finder
Enter Time Machine
Select the date you want to go back to
In the path bar find the directory with the name like 2011-11-12-202011, click on folder
The old drive will be in that directory - use the normal restore process
Why is it broken
My guess is that to avoid accidentally backing up the wrong disk (after all every WD My Book is called MyBook when plugged in) they use the UUID (Universally Unique ID) to identify the drive. But, we see the MyBook name in Finder and Time Machine so they need to link the UUID to the MyBook name. This is a one shot, once done, never undone.
So, now when it tries to check that link with the new disk it will have a different UUID (that's the UU bit!) and complains. Renaming that disk breaks the link (there's no MyBook now, so no link to check)

Time Machine backup to DMG file

Is it possible to configure Time Machine to backup to a DMG file?
From my searching it doesn't seem possible. But why not??
Before you ask what the heck for, there are some perfectly legitimate use cases for this, for example, when the DMG file represents a network-backed resource. In my particular case I'd like to use s3backer ( http://code.google.com/p/s3backer/ ) to create a DMG file backed by Amazon S3 so I can do time machine backups to the "cloud". Voila, secure, encrypted & compressed backup over the network accessible from anywhere using free software.
If it's not currently possible, what can we do to get this fixed? Even if it were an "advanced" option that would be fine of course.

Time Machine Backup to Tar File

Using the following command tar -cvpzf dec2014macprobackup.tar.gz /Volumes/Seagate_Backup/ I attempted to backup & compress a time machine backup. I just installed a new seagate internal harddrive. I performed a single backup to it and then turned off time machine. The Seagate drive is 3TB and the tar file command was performed on a 2TB drive. As a result, the 2TB disk ran out of space before the tar command completed. Questions:
1) Can time machine restore this backup? I could untar the file to the 3TB drive and try it. I want to know if technically this will work
2) Any other suggestions technical suggestions?
3) Time Machine will not complete a backup on my 2TB drive anymore. Hence the reason I bought a 3TB drive.

HT201250 My macbook pro crashed and I had to install a new hard drive. I restored from Time Machine backup all the files from my old hard drive onto my new one.

Does it really back up the whole new drive or does it only back up what's been added? It seemed like it was doing the whole thing when I tried it. I stopped it. Don't want to use up all the space on my external. Is there something else I need to do or did I mess up by not doing the migrating thing? thanks!

If you installed a new hard drive, it has nothing on it and yes TimeMachine is going to take forever to restore everything back.
I guess you'll have to erase and start over again now.
Too bad, you should have made bootable clones in addition to TimeMachine, they can restore in a hour or two depending upon content, they are also option key bootable.
TimeMachine has to go through and calculate all the files it needs to bring forward, the files are strewn all over the drive. The read heads are moving all over the platters all the time from fast sectors to slow ones, not matching what's occuring on the internal drive.
With a clone the files are defragmented and optimized, the drive reads one file, moves the heads a tiny bit and reads the next all the while transferring exactly to the internal drive, they are more in step with one another, thus it's much faster restoring from a clone than TM.

Pages '09 .template files cannot be opened in pages 5

I have an older iMac and just bought a new Macbook. I have been having problems (seems like I'm not the only one) with the new Pages. Mostly, even on my iMac, I've had problems opening files. I always get an error that says, "'X file' can't be opened". Somehow I got to some of my older files, I think by converting them to .docx files. Now, I've purchased some resume templates that came in different formats. I can open the .docx files but the formatting gets screwed up. They came with pages .template files (that I assume were created in Pages '09) that I cannot open.
Do I have any options besides trying to redo all of the formatting (defeating the purpose of buying templates) in Pages 5 which is a ****** application with ****** formatting tools?
Can I get Pages '09 back
Can Apple please stop trying to oversimplify things to the point of making them useless?
Apple has really dropped the ball with this one. My frustration with pages alone is almost enough to make me wish I had purchased a different laptop. Microsoft Word '98 was a better word processor.

We largely agree and have been recommending users stick with Pages '09 until a third party replaces Pages with something like Serif's Affinity Publisher next year.
If you migrated your Mac over from the old one it should have transferred Pages '09.
Can you reinstall from original installers? Just make sure to update iWork '09 to v4.3.

Can't access library folder on Time Machine Backup

I'll try to explain this as clearly as possible...
1) I have wiped my hard drive and completed a clean install of Mavericks. I did this due to persistant problems with disc permissions that I could not eliminate.
2) I did not want to take a chance on introducing problems with migrating a profile from my Time Machine backup so instead of using Migration Assistant, I used Finder to browse the Time Machine backup I made prior to reformatting my drive to simply copy all my necessary data files back onto the drive in my newly created profile.
3) I've reinstalled the majority of programs I use and everything is looking good (no disk permission problems when I've checked using Disk Utility).
4) Mail is working just find with all my accounts having been restored using my Apple ID.
Here's the problem....
I forgot that some of my mail had been stored on my local hard drive. I beleive this mail should be in my user/library/mail folder of my time machine backup. However, I cannot access my User/Library folder in Time Machine. I've tried opening my current (new) User/Library folder in Finder and then selecting "Browse Other Backup Discs" from the Time Machine icon and, although this opens the Time Machine backups, I cannot do any time travel...in other words, although there are many stacks of folders shown in the backup, I cannot move into the past from the present.
Any suggestions on how I can get this Mail folder out of the Time Machine user/library? I know there is some stuff there that I'm going to have to get to.

It woked to get me into my current User/Library of my "new" profile but I cannot move back in time into the actual backups despite the timeline increments on the right side of the screen in Time Machine showing they're are backups for the past several months. I'm stuck on this moment so to speak.

How to install or replace lion on Mac OS X Leopard simultaneously reinstall time machine backup of OS X Leopard

Hi, I am new or know nothing about Mac Mini which I received from relative as gift along with few software including lion OS.
I want to install lion after time machine backup of current files Mac OS X 10.6.8.
MY question is that backup of Mac OS X 10.6.8 can be installed or copied on newly installed Lion software.

Only third-party applications and the user's admin folder. Since Lion succeeds Snow Leopard, you cannot restore the system software without first erasing the drive. That means you must have the Snow Leopard installer DVD.
I would simply upgrade the Snow Leopard system with Lion:
How to Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Successfully - You must have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 Installed
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.3.) if DW cannot fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
      Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup volume. Source means the internal startup volume.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
1. If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before
      installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the
      update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is
      complete and you've restarted.
2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-
      party system software modifications, or if you have modified the
      operating system through other means. (This does not apply to
      normal application software installation.)
3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or
      other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone
      installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the
      installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. To upgrade to Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks:
1. Purchase the Lion/Mountain Lion Installer from the Mac App Store.
      The download should start quickly. Lion is nearly 4 GBs so a fast
      internet connection is essential. Download time could run upwards of 4
      hours depending upon network conditions and server demands at the
      time. Note that Mavericks is FREE.
2. The installer will run automatically after the download is completed.
      Click on the Install button to begin the upgrade.
3. Follow instructions for installation.
