Time Machine Backups Seem to take a long time

I'm running OS X 10.5.8 on a G5 iMac, and I've noticed some strange behavior recently when Time Machine does it's back ups.  I back up to a LaCie external drive with a capacity of 465 GB and it currently has 65GB available.  When Time Machine does it back ups, it seems to take  a very long time, eventhough not much has changed.  It might go for 30min to an hour.  Sometimes the back up fails.  I've tried to stop the back up, but that doesn't stop Time Machine, and also System Preferences becomes unresponsive.  I can't quit or force quit System Preferences.  I have to turn off the iMac to quit System Preferences by holding in the power button.  I'm not sure if this is a Time Machine issue, or an issue with the external HD.  I know the iMac is a bit dated, and due to be replaced.  The HD is also at least 3-4 years old, and has only been used as my Time Machine back up.  Any ideas on how I might fix this?  Thanks!!

I had problems verifiying and repairing the LaCie HD.  At first the the computer would hang on "verifying" the HD.  I finally got the HD verified by switching the on/off/auto switch on the HD from auto to on.  At this point verification went quickly.
That doesn't sound good.
Try different port(s), cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact in another).
Do you have (or can you borrow) another HD you can try?
Or another Mac you can try with that drive?
As an extra measure, I tried to repair the HD, but again the program hung up and I had to reboot.
Just for future reference, there's no point to verifying an external HD -- just run Repair. They both do all the same checks.  Starting with Verify on your startup drive makes sense, since, if there's a problem, you have to start from another source to repair it.

  • Time Machine/Time Capsule backups successful, but take a long time

I purchased a 512GB Time Capsule about a year ago. Since I got it, backups have been successful, but very slow. An average backup takes about 40-50 minutes, usually for less than 20 MB transferred.
Here are a couple summaries of recent backups (see end of post for full logs):
    BACKUP 1:
11 minutes to detect if pre-backup thinning was necessary
18 minutes to copy 281 MB
5 minutes to copy 5.4 MB
4 minutes to start post-backup thinning
2 minutes to delete 1 expired backup
    There were no error messages.
    BACKUP 2:
4 minutes to detect if pre-backup thinning was necessary
12 minutes to copy 15 MB
5 minutes to detect if pre-backup thinning was necessary
15 minutes to copy 3.8 MB
1 minutes to start post-backup thinning
2 minutes to delete 1 expired backup
This time, there were error messages about "Unable to rebuild path cache for source item. Partial source path:"
My Time Capsule is placed about 5 feet from my laptop, with no obstructions between them. I don't think it's a wireless speed issue, because I use the Time Capsule as my router, and my connection to the net is fine. Also, operations that don't require wireless connections, like detecting pre-backup thinning, also take a long time.
Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong to cause my regular backups to take so long?

One other thing thing you might try, is a +*Verify Disk+* (not permissions) on your internal HD. That will not take anything like 40 hours! If it reports problems, you'll have to boot from your Install disc and use it's copy of DU to repair it. Post back if you need to do this but aren't sure how.
I think it's very fishy that Repair Disk took 40 hours -- it seems like any operation that touches the hard drive on the Time Capsule takes a long time. Maybe the hard drive is having problems? What sort of problems could a drive have that would make everything VERY slow, but still successful?
Try connecting via an Ethernet cable; see what effect that has. Everything should be faster, of course, but not wildly. Just as an example, I'm doing backups to a USB hard drive via my Airport Extreme, about 15 feet from my iMac. When I first started that way, I did a full backup via Ethernet (about 21 gb/hour), then erased it and ran again wirelessly (about 12 gb/hour).
Even 5 feet apart, you may have some sort of interference or other communications problem; if Ethernet is many times faster, then you may need to have your TC and/or wireless card examined.

  • Time Machine Backup seems to run constantly

My Time Machine backup seems to run constantly.   When it happens, performance is also affected.   Although a system restart will seems to get everything back to normal, the problem comes back.    Any thoughts on what I am doing to cause the problem?

    Thanks Mike,
I'm a bit new to Macs really and thought that once backed up, on my NAS system I would be able to view the photos etc. but I presume this isn't the case and I should not back up the photos as part of the Time Machine backup and back these up seperately in order to view them remotely etc?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • Time machine backup seems to only have a Sparsebundle folder

I have had my MacBook for a couple of years and have only just got round to backing it up. I set off Time Machine lat night for a 200Gb backup. This morning I checked it and the Time machine backup seems to only have a Sparsebundle folder of 1000s of small files but apparently no iTunes or photos??
    Any ideas????

  • Iphone seems to take a long time to charge when plugged in to USB

Hi MyIphone seems to take a long time to charge when plugged in to USB. Is this normal? Less power coming from the Laptop than wall plug?

Wow.. this completely amazes me. USB is 5v. Some computers (especially laptops) will shut off power to USB devices when the computer enters power saving mode. Very few will lower the power (since this could actually damage a device). I have noticed no difference in charge time between USB and the wall plug (I use the wall plug mostly when I travel, and USB at home). The only difference I can see is the wall wart puts out slightly more amperage then a USB port.

  • Time Machine backups still on drive, no longer in Time Machine

I have two computers backed up to the same drive, and I cannot backup Mac#2 because the backups of Mac#1 are taking up too much space.
On Mac#1, I went into Time Machine and used the Delete Backup option on several of the oldest backups. I ran into one problem (a bug, actually) in the process, which is that after you've done the first Delete Backup, when you do the second, the "Are you sure you want to permanently remove..." dialog box does not appear, and you have to just hit the Return key on your keyboard to proceed.
The second problem came when I saw no indication of any kind that the backups I was removing were really being deleted. So I exited Time Machine, and found a small window in my Finder showing progress bars for the processes of removing the backups — there were several of the progress bars, all of them "barber poling." I didn't realize how long the deletion of each backup would take, so assuming there was some kind of problem, I stopped progress on all of them, and went back into Time Machine to see if I did them one at a time, waiting in between, if that would help.
Once back in Time Machine, the backups I'd previously tried to delete no longer appeared, but when I go in the Finder to the externa drive's Time Machine Backups > Backups.backupdb > My MacBook Pro, the folders for those dates are still there.
Now, I suspect it would be a bad idea to remove these folders manually from within the Finder. But if I can't remove them via the Finder, and those dates no longer appear in Time Machine, how do I get rid of them?
Erasing and partitioning the drive are not an option at this point because there are other things on the drive, not just the Time Machine backups.

Never found a solution to this. I ended up buying a second external because I needed more room anyway, and partitioning it before using it for Time Machine.
If you don't think you'd need anything but the most recent backup, you could always reformat the drive, partition, then turn each partition into a separate Time Machine, one for each computer.

  • Time Machine Backup seems to freeze after a few megabytes saying Estimating TIme Remaining

My MBP (mid 2009, osx10.8.5) seems to take forever to Time Machine Backup.  I'm backing up to an external (USB) disk that has plenty of memory.  THe backup starts (Status window opens), Status says "Backing up 1,314,593 items", climbs to about 310 MB of 325.01 GB and then just sits there with a line that says "Estimating time remaining".  I've let this sit for 2 hours so far and no other messages or errors. I haven't done this in a while and a previous , partial, Time Machine Backup was on this USB drive but I deleted everything on it because there wasn't enough space to do the new Time Machine Backup. It will have to do a full backup I'm sure, so I expect it to take a while to back up over 300GB but I don't see anything being copied to the backup disk, except the "Backups.backupdb" folder.  It stays at about 265MB.

Try D4/3 in the 1st linked article.

  • Time machine backups seem to be gone

I have been running time machine flawlessly for a while.  However, on April 26, I created a new user account.  I dragged a very large file (clone of a different computer and time machine backup of a different computer) to that user desktop.  Those files were previously being excluded from backups.  Apparently, wehn I moved them to the new user it tried to include them and I got a warning about the External Drive not being large enough for the backups.  I sorted out excluding that user completely but now I can not access any backups prior to the new user being created.  Are they lost forever?  Did it delete the External Drive to try to make room for the backup?  I would think that it would have to check the size before it even does any deleting and then if it knew the backup was too big it wouldn't delete and it would just abort the backup.  Can anyone help?  When I enter into time machine the last backup shown is April 26, when I browse the drive the oldest folder is April 26 and when I look at the time machine menu it says the oldest backup is April 26.
I am using an iMac with Snow Leopard installed.
Also, I tried looking at the logs in the console but I could not seem to go back far enough.

Are you going into Time Machine from the old user? If you enter Time Machine from the new user, you won't see any files created before that user existed.
You can manually go into your Time Machine volume from the Finder, just to verify that your backups are all there. Don't make any changes in the Finder. Even if Time Machine's "starfield" interface isn't functional, you could still restore files manually if you had to. If Time Machine is really confused, best option is usually to just erase the Time Machine drive and start a fresh one.

  • Time Machine Backup didn't take

I am trying to restore my late 2009 iMac from a recent time Machine backup. My 1 TB internal drive started to hard fail so I replaced it with a 2 TB drive. I installed 10.8.5 on it (which is what the previous one was running). I was able to start a restore from a backup about a week old. I intended this to overwrite whatever was currently on my new drive.
Since this was over Wi-Fi, it took about 18 hours to restore about 460 GB. The indication I got that it was working was a 'Copying...' dialog that showed the progress of the 460 GB. Once it finished copying, that was it. No errors. Same desktop as before. I restarted thinking that that was needed for the new installation to 'stick' but when it came up, there was no difference. Same basic installation of OSX with none of my old files. However, when I look in Disk Utilities, there is indeed about 460 GB of data used up on my drive. Where is it? How can I access it? Would Migration Assistant see newly copied files? What would I point to as a source, if I can't find the 'restored' data?
Just to give all the info, my time machine backups are stored on a Drobo FS connected to a Cisco router through wired ethernet, accessed by my iMac over wi-fi.

So the restored volume was actually placed inside the new installation, rather than replacing the new one as I had expected it to do.
As I suspected. This means you did not do the restore correctly. The link I provide will describe this in greater detail.
The first thing I tried was creating a simlink to the restore in /Volumes, hoping that I'd be able to then select it when booting holding Option. This didn't work.
As you discovered that will never work in this case. The restore needs to be done correctly.
The second thing I'm trying is to add an empty partition to my drive, and copy the restored volume iMacZilla to the new partition. This is currently in progress and I'll let you know how it goes.
Not sure how this will help.  You should just cut your losses,  take a look at the link I provided and redo the restore correctly. That will be the only way to guarantee the stae of the system..
    good luck

  • I want a new and more powerful (non-Apple) wireless router but I still want to use my existing Time Capsule to continue with my Time Machine backups and I still need the Time Capsule's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features and capabilities

    THE SHORTER STORY
My goal is to successfully use my existing Time Capsule (TC) with a new and more powerful wireless router. I need a new and more powerful wireless router in order to reach a distant Denon a/v receiver that is physically located in a master bedroom some 50 feet away from my modem. I need to provide this Denon a/v receiver with an Internet connection so that it can obtain its firmware updates and I need to connect this Denon a/v receiver to my network in order to use its AirPlay feature. I believe l still need the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features because I am not sure if the new wireless router will provide me with the NAS like features / capabilities I need to share files between my two Apple laptops with OS X 10.8.2. And I know that I absolutely need my TC's seamless integration with Apple's Time Machine (TM) application in order to continue to make effortless backups of my two Apple laptops. To my knowledge nothing works with TM like Apple's TC. I also need the hard disk storage space built into the TC.
I cannot use a long wired Ethernet cable connection in this apartment and I cannot use power-line adapters. I have read that wireless range extenders and repeaters are difficult to successfully set-up and that they will reduce data speeds, especially so when incorrectly set-up. I cannot relocate my modem and/or primary base station wireless router.
In short, I want to use my TC with my new and more powerful wireless router. I need to stop using the TC to connect to the modem. However, I still need the TC for seamless TM backups. I also need to use the TC's built in hard drive for storage. And I may still need the TC's NAS capabilities to share files wirelessly between laptops because I am assuming the new wireless router will not provide NAS capabilities for OS X 10.8.2 (products like this/non-Apple products rarely seem to work with OS X 10.8.2/Macs to provide NAS features and capabilities). Finally, I want to continue to use my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also want to continue to use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Can someone please advise on how to set-up my new Asus wireless router with my existing TC in such a way to accomplish all of this?
What is the best configuration or set-up to accomplish my above goals?
Thank you in advance for your assistance!!!
    THE FULL STORY
I live in an apartment building where my existing Time Capsule (TC) is located in my living room and serves many purposes. Specially, my TC is at least all of the following:
    (1) Wi-Fi router connected to Comcast Internet service via Motorola SB6121 cable modem - currently the TC is the Wi-Fi base station that connects to the modem and has the gateway address to the Internet. The TC now provides the DHCP service for the Wi-Fi network.
    (2) Wireless router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to several Wi-Fi clients - two Apple laptop computers, an iPod touch, an iPad and an iPhone all connect wirelessly to the Internet via the TC.
    (3) Wired Ethernet router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to three different devices - a Panasonic TV, LG Blu-Ray player and an Apple TV each use one of the three LAN ports on the back of the TC to gain access to the Internet.
    (4) Primary base station in my attempt to extend my wireless network to a distant (located far away) Denon a/v receiver requiring a wired Ethernet connection - In addition to the TC, which is my primary base station, I am also using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. I cannot use a wired Ethernet connection to continuously travel from the living room to the master bedroom. The distance is too great as I cannot effectively hide the Ethernet cable in this apartment.
    (5) Time Machine (TM) backup facilitator - I use my TC to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops using Apple's Time Machine (TM) application. However, I ran out of storage space on my TC and therefore added external storage to it. Specifically, I added an external hard drive to my TC via the USB port on the back of the TC. I now use this added external hard drive connected to the TC via USB as the destination storage drive for my TM back-ups. I have partitioned the added external hard drive, and each of the several partitions all have enough storage space (e.g., each of the two partitions used by TM are sized at three times the hard drive space of each laptop, etc.). Everything works flawlessly.
    (6) Network Attached Storage (NAS) - In addition to using the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) capabilities to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops via TM, I also store other additional files on both (A) the hard drive built into the TC and (B) the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB (there are additional separate partitions on this drive for these other additional and non-TM backup files).
I use the TC's NAS feature with my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Again, everything works wirelessly and flawlessly. (Note: the Apple TV is connected to the network via Ethernet and a LAN port on the back of the TC).
The issue I am having is when I try to listen to music via Apple's AirPlay in the master bedroom. This master bedroom is located at a distance of two rooms away from the TC's current location in the living room, which is a distance of about 50 feet. This apartment has a long rectangular floor plan where each room is connected to the next in a straight line. In order to use AirPlay in the master bedroom I am using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. This additional base station connects wirelessly to the WiFi network provided by my TC and then gives my Denon receiver the wired Ethernet connection it needs to use AirPlay. I have tried moving my iTunes music directly onto my laptop's hard drive, and then I used AirPlay on this same laptop to connect to the Denon receiver. I always get a successful connection and the song plays, but the problem is that the connection inevitably drops.
I live in an apartment building and all of the many wireless routers in this building create a great deal of WiFi interference on both the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz bands. I have tried connecting the Netgear product to each the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, but neither band can successfully maintain a wireless connection between the TC and the Netgear product. I also attempted to maintain a wireless connection to an iPod touch using the 2.4 GHz band and AirPlay on this iPod touch to play music on the Denon receiver. Again, I was able to establish a connection and successfully play music, but after a few minutes the connection dropped and the music stopped playing. I therefore have concluded that I have a poor wireless connection in the master bedroom. I can establish a connection, but it is intermittent with frequent drops. I have verified this with both laptops by working in the master bedroom for an entire day on both laptops. The Internet connection in this master bedroom proved to drop out frequently - about once an hour with the laptops. The wireless connection and the frequency of its dropout are far worse with the iPod touch and an iPhone.
I cannot relocate the TC. Also, this is an apartment and I therefore cannot extend the range of my network with Ethernet cable (I cannot drill through walls/ceilings, etc.). It is an old building with antiquated wiring and power-line adapters are not likely to function properly, nor can I spare the direct power outlet required with a power-line adapter. I simply need every outlet I can get and cannot afford to block any direct outlet.
My solution is to use a more powerful wireless router. I found the ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router which will likely provide a better connection to my wireless Internet in the master bedroom than the TC. The 802.11ac band of this Asus wireless router is totally useless to me, but based on what I have read I believe this router will provide a stronger connection at greater distances then my TC. And I will be ready for 802.11ac when it becomes more widely available.
However, I still need to maintain the TC's ability to work seamlessly with TM to backup my two laptops. Also, I doubt the new Asus router will provide OS X 10.8.2 with NAS like features and capabilities. Therefore, I still would like to use the TC's NAS capabilities to share files on my network wirelessly assuming the Asus wireless router fails to provide this feature. I need a new and more powerful wireless router, but I need to maintain the TC's NAS features and seamless integration with TM. Can someone advise on how to set-up my existing TC with this new Asus wireless router in such a way to accomplish all of this?

In regards to a Plan B, I hear ya brother. I am already on what feels like Plan Z. Getting WiFi to a far off room in an apartment building crowded with WiFi routers is a major pain.
I am basing my thoughts on the potential of a new and more powerful router reaching the far off master bedroom based on positive reviews on cnet.com, pcmag.com and pcworld.com. All 3 of these web sites have reviewed the Asus RT-AC66U 802.11AC wireless router as well as its virtual twin cousin 802.11n router. What impressed me is that all 3 sites rated this router #1 overall in terms of both range and speed (in both the 802.11n and 802.11AC flavors). They tested the router in real world scenarios where the router needed to compete with a lot of other wireless routers. One of the sites even buried this Asus router in a media room with thick walls and inside a media cabinet. This Asus router should be able to serve my 2.4 GHz band wireless clients (iPod Touch and iPhone 4) with a 2.4GHz Wireless-N band offering some 50 feet of dependable range and a 60 Mbps throughput at that range. I am hoping that works, but it's borderline for my master bedroom. My 5 GHz wireless clients (laptops) will enjoy a 5GHz Wireless-N band offering 150 feet of range and a 200 Mbps throughput at that range. I have no idea what most of that stuff means, but I did also read that Asus could reach 300 feet and I got really excited. My mileage may vary of course and I'm sure I'm making some mistakes in my interpretation of their data. However, my Winter 2009 Time Capsule was rated by cnet.com to deliver real world performance of less than that, and 802.11AC may or may not be useful to me someday. But when this Asus arrives and provides anything other than an excellent and consistent wireless signal without drops in the master bedroom it's going right back!
Your solution sounds great, but I have some questions. I'm using OS X 10.8.2 and Airport Utility (version 6.1 610.31) and on its third tab labeled "Wireless" the top option enables you to set "Network Mode" to either:
    Create a wireless network
    Extend a wireless network
    Off
Given your advice to "Turn off the wireless on the TC," should I set Network Mode to Off? Sorry, I'm clueless in regards to how to turn off the wireless on the TC any other way. Can you provide specific steps on how to turn off the wireless on the TC? If what I wrote is correct then what should the rest of this Wireless tab look like, or perhaps it is irrelevant when wireless is off?
Next, what do you mean by "Configure the TC in Bridge Mode?" Under Airports Utility's fourth tab labeled "Network" the top option "Router Mode" allows for either:
    DHCP and Nat
    DHCP Only
    Off (Bridge Mode)
Is your advice to Configure the TC in Bridge Mode as simple as setting Router Mode to Off (Bridge Mode)? If yes, then what should the rest of this "Network" tab look like? Anything else involved in configuring the TC in Bridge Mode or is it really as simple as setting the Router Mode to "Off (Bridge Mode)"?
How about the other tabs in Airport Utility, can they all stay as is assuming I use the same network name and password for the new Asus wireless router? Or do I need to make any other changes to the TC via Airport Utility?
Finally, in regards to your Plan B suggestion. I agree. But do you have a Plan B for me? I would greatly appreciate any alternative you could provide. Specifically, if you needed a TC's Internet connection to reach a far off corner of your home how would you do it? In the master bedroom I need both a wired Ethernet connection for the Denon a/v receiver and wireless Internet connection for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Power-Line Adapters - High Cost, Blocks at Least One Wall Outlet and Does Not Solve the Wireless Need
I actually like exactly one power-line adapter, which is the D-Link DHP-540 PowerLine AV 500 4-Port Gigabit Switch. This D-Link power-line adapter plugs into your wall outlet with a normal sized plug (regular standard power cord much like any other electronic device) instead of all of the other recommended power-line adapters that not only use at least one wall outlet but also often block the second outlet. You cannot use a power strip with a power-line adapter which is very impractical for me. And everything about my home is strange and upside down. The wiring here is a disaster and I don't have faith in its ability to carry Internet access from the living room to the master bedroom. And this D-Link power-line adapter costs $90 each and I need at least two to make the connection to the Denon A/V receiver. So, $180 on this solution and I still don't have a dependable drop free wireless connection in the master bedroom. The Denon might get its Ethernet Internet connection from the power-line adapter, but if I want to use an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch to stream AirPlay music to the Denon wirelessly (Pandora/iTunes, etc.) from the master bedroom the wireless connection will not be stable in there and I've already spent $190 on just the two power-line adapters needed.
Extenders / Repeaters / Wirelessly Extending the Wireless Network
I have also read great things about the Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Range Extender (Repeater) SR20000G and the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender. The former is very powerful and the latter is easier to install. Both cost about $150 ish so similar to a new Asus router. However, everything I read about Range Extenders points to them not being very effective for a far off corner of your house wherein it's apparently hard to place the range extender in the sweet spot where it both gets a strong enough signal to actually effectively extend the wireless signal and otherwise does not reduce network throughput speeds to unacceptable speeds.
Creating a Roaming Network By Hard Wiring with Ethernet Cable - Wife Would Say, "**** No!"
Even Apple seems to warn against wirelessly extending your network (see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145#) and otherwise strongly recommends a roaming network where Ethernet cable is used to connect two wireless base stations. However, I am in an apartment where stringing together two wireless base stations with Ethernet cable would have an extremely low wife acceptance factor (WAF). I cannot (both contractually and from a skill prospective) hide Ethernet wire in the walls or ceiling. And having visible Ethernet cable running from room-to-room would be unacceptable, especially to the wife.
So what is left? Do you have a Plan B for me? Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Unable to recover Mavericks via Time Machine on iMac (2011). I have one Time Machine backup from this week On new Time Capsule. I already attempted safe boot and NPRAM reset. Hard drive and permissions verified as ok.

Some more history - I'm not too techie so added everything in I thought might be significant!
    - Installed Mavericks on iMac in October 2013
    - experienced regular low memory issues - used Memory Clean app as a workaround
    - last week decided to upgrade installed memory from 4gb to 16gb. Faster loading but still running out of memory - just takes longer to do so.
    - also last week purchased 2gb Time Capsule (to back up 660gb on 1TB drive)
    - one successful Time Machine backup completed last weekend.
    - I decided to try and clear some space, tidy my folders, old music files,  delete duplicates etc (Not system files)
    - then tried out 'time machine restore' just to test it out. Deleted files and folders recovered ok using Time Machine menu (the one that looks like outta space)
    - yesterday, Avast Anti-Virus flagged virus detected (sorry, I didn't manage to capture details) and quarantined file, but I couldn't get any windows to respond so forced Mac to shutdown.
    - attempted regular reboot , system hanging on white/ apple symbol screen.
    -  attempted Safe reboot - reboot stalls at mess 'BootCacheControl: unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist no such file or directory.
(I don't know if this is significant)
    - attempt NPRAM reset, reboot hanging at Apple symbol still
    - attempted reboot into Disk Utility. HD drive verified ok. Permissions checked and Safari permissions fixed (only)
    - finally attempting restore from Time Machine Backup via Disk Utility. Stalls at 'select a backup source'. Menu is 'searching for Time Machine Backup....'
Nothing is listed, after a few mins machine just goes to sleep.
My Time Capsule and networks are all switched on. No idea what to try next!

Most of the problems like this that people report on this forum are due to bad "utilities" like Memory Clean and Avast.
Your Mac probably didn't have a virus. There has never been an OSX virus "in the wild". Third party antivirus software is of very dubious utility on Macs. Macs are not PCs. OSX has anti-malware protection built into it already.
Do you have any other third party "utilities" on your Mac, such as CleanMyMac or MacKeeper?
Is the RAM you installed the recommended type of RAM for your Mac?
Take a look at this page: Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
But your OS may be damaged beyond repair, or beyond what disk utility is able to repair.
In that case you have a few options:
There is a small chance that a (reputable) third part utility like Techtool Pro 7  may be able to fix your OS.
Try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
bite the bullet, boot into the recovery partition or internet recovery, and erase your HD, reinstall Mavericks from scratch, and start over. Your documents are probably still on your Time Machine Backup. I wouldn't reinstall the documents via a migration- you don't want to reinstall bad system files along with your documents- but you could copy them one by one back to your internal HD. And most importantly- don't reinstall any third party "utilites" like Memory Clean or Avast (or any other third-party antivirus software, for that matter).

  • Time Machine Backup hangs on both USB and Time Capsule

    Hello!
I have some problems with Time Machine backing up my MacBook Pro Retina 15" Late 2013 running Yosemite 10.10.2.
I am using the MacBook both in the office and at home attached to a USB hub with KeyBord and external screen. The MacBook is usually closed and I put in sleep mode ("Ruhezustand" in German) when changing the location.
In my office I have a Time Capsule and at home I am attaching an USB 3 external hard disc directly to the free USB port on the MacBook. Everything worked fine for a long time and I did not pay much attention to the updating process itself.
Since a couple of weeks I have the problem, that Time Machine Backup hangs - on both USB-Drive and Time Capsule. This could happen at different positions like 550 MB of x.x GB or 3 KB of x.x GB (Calculating Time Remaining).
The only way to run the backup completely is to restart the Mac. Then everything runs fine and the following automatic backups are running smoothly, too. It seems the problem only occours after moving from one location to another.
I tried checking the Volume of the Mac and the USB drive and also tried repairing Rights on the Volume.
I also tried resetting the pram during the start-up procedure.
Changes I made in the last months are moving from Mavericks to Yosemity, replacing old Cherry Keyboards with Apple keyboards and updating a driver for the USB-Hub including Lan-Access.
    Thank you for your help!
    Markus

Ok, I got a lot of results. I hope this information is helpful. Keep in mind I restarted the machine and Time Machine is now working fine. This will probably be the case until I am in the office again (not before Tuesday).

  • Moving files from a Time Machine backup manually vs restoring from a Time Machine backup

I have read several articles saying that contemporary Macs and OSs are built such that they clean themselves up - defragmentation, general sweeping, etc. I was told by the Genius, however, that there are many little files that are left lying around after installs, uninstalls, file making, and file deletion that will gum up the works. He recommended that I set up my computer as though it's brand new and manually transfer files over from my Time Machine backup folder on my ExtHD.
Because I couldn't find a discussion of this specific topic online, I thought I'd bring it to the community myself. Is there an advantage to setting up the computer from scratch and manually moving the files (provided I use Migration Assistant for applications)?
For background:  My Mac was running slowly, and after doing some research and talking to a "Genius", I thought it would be wise to reformat my HD and restore my system. Aside from sluggish performance, I was experiencing strange symptoms - like free disk space remaining the same even after deleting huge files, permissions errors, etc. I tried doing a permissions repair (a process I'd been told to do before when experiencing issues, even though I never knew what that really did), and read that I should verify my disk as well. Disk Utility told me that I had to reboot from the repair disk to perform the necessary repairs. The repair disk Disk Utility told me that my disk had some major issues and needed to be reformatted and restored.
HOURS LATER: I am back up and running now and Disk Utility is showing the appropriate amount of free disk space.

    Let's start with some basics.
Check under the Apple in the Menu bar About this Mac > More Info
How much Memory do you have installed?
What size is our hard drive and how much free space?
You'll find the term Genius does not necessarily mean they are expert. Even on this forum, you'll find varying difference of opinions and levels of expertise.

This is true. Apps like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, Washing Machine or anything like these apps might appear to be helpful, can do too more harm than good. As a result of the 'cleanup' it can leave your Mac non-functional Mac. The forums are full of users with computers that no longer work correctly after running these so call 'cleaners'

I'm going to disagree here. Get rid of the installer from downloads after installing. After removing an app, most of the little files do no harm and take up very little space. However some applications mostly crapware/cleaners will leave files that continue to run silently in the background takeing up resources.
Don't install stuff you don't really need. There is no magic bullet to clean up your messes.

  • How many concurrent Time Machine backups can be run on one Time Capsule?

I'm using a WD My Book Live (MBL) GbE NAS for the Time Machine backup for 2 MacBook (Pro and Air) over wireless-N.  It's very often the MBL gives "verification error" to one or even two Macbooks if both of them are doing Time Machine (TM) backup at the same time.  I want to see if the Time Capsule will be more reliable.
The Time Capsule 4th Generation is using a Western Digital WD20EARS 2TB Caviar Green SATA HDD ($79) which is slow in spindle speed (5400-rpm) and slow data transfer rate (Serial ATA-300), while the previous TC versions were using 7200-rpm HDD.
Apple said Number of Users can be supported by the TC 4th Gen is 50.  Does it meant that 50 concurrent Time Machine backup processes can be supported:
    1.     over the four GigaBit Ethernet ports?
    2.     over 802.11n simultaneous dual-band WiFi?
How come I start getting "verification error" after I started adding 2 more backups to a TC used to backup just one MBP?

That was the original release .. I am not sure now the ones you buy will be the same. Anyway the Gen1 Gen2 (identical boards) were 50% slower than the new TC Gen3 Gen4 (identical boards) They are processor bound.. you can put an SSD in the TC and the actual transfer speed will not improve.. so forget the disk.. it is faster than wireless by a long way.. a bit lacking for gigabit but file transfer for TM is not actually hugely fast as the TM process the files.

Concurrent users is internet.. and that is stretching things. There is no way 50 users can run TM at once.. the disk isn't big enough anyway.
TC is designed for domestic setup.. 3 or 4 Macs.. would be fine.
Your last point, I don't follow .. you stated it was a WD MBL not a TC.. and TM is really not known to work well on anything but a TC. WD disks connected to a non-apple router?? is hardly going to get apple support.. even an airport extreme with USB is not supported. TM is not reliable on airdisks.. so it doesn't surprise me if the MBL corrupts on a daily basis.
Same can happen with any airdisk.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Airport.html
But I have to say I don't think wireless has been great for TM reliability in later OS.. especially if you upgrade installed.. TM is pretty easy to corrupt itself. So you get lots of issues reported here with TM needing to wipe the old backups and start over.
The older OS .. BTW I use 10.6.8 still is very reliable to a non-apple NAS. Everything went to pot with Lion and the new security level of AFP.
