Time Machine backups start and then fail!

Time machine had a single successful (ethernet-connected) backup up to a new 2TB time capsule. But subsequent backups began to fail. I did a quick erase of the TC, reset the machine and began again...with no luck. I connected my wife's macbook to the same ethernet connection and asked time machine to backup, which is did. After scanning through the Pondini Q&As, I'm still not sure what's happening - I believe the failure to be in time machine and not with the time capsule. I ran Onyx for permission repairs, etc.
Here's the error report from the time machine widget:
No pre-backup thinning needed: 130.74 GB requested (including padding), 1.81 TB available
Waiting for index to be ready (101)
2013-01-06 17:01:28.092 ReportCrash[873:1407] Saved crash report for backupd[852] version ??? (???) to /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/backupd_2013-01-06-170127_localhost.crash
How can I figure out what's causing the crash and how to repair it?

If you wish to exclude anything from the backup simply drag the item into the Exclude list. For example, you can save considerable space by excluding the /System/ folder. Cache files would be found in the /Library/ and /Home/Library/ folders. Each folder contains a folder named Caches. There is no specific folder in which temporary items as stored that is visible to the user because the operating system will usually delete temporary files on its own. This may not be the case for a specific program, however. Browsers may maintain their own reserved cache and temporary files, and manage them on their own.
I do not think, however, that TM backs up caches or temporary files. I find no such items in my TM backup - only the folders. I do not back up my /System/ folder.

  • Macbook Air Freezes when Time Machine backup starts

My Macbook Air (OS 10.5.5) has started freezing up whenever a Time Machine backup begins. I get the dark shade screen telling me that it has crashed and to hard power off. Everything was working well before, including the Time Machine backups, and the only changes I have made are the Apple updates. At first I thought it was random crashes, but I soon discovered that turning off Time Machine stops the problem (though obviously does not fix it). I've tried restarting and turning Time Machine back on, but it still makes the computer crash within a minute of the start of the backup process. The backup goes to a Time Capsule. I have not seen this problem on any of my other macs on the same network including a Macbook Pro that backs up to the same Time Capsule. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be and how to fix it?

To be honest,no I don't know why you are having this problem.
It looks like a specific problem with your MBA which could be a hardware problem (RAM most likely here) or a bad sector problem on the hard disk. If you own a copy of TechTool or something similar, run a full hardware systems check. If you don't own TechTool, run the Apple Hardware check from the MBA System install disk.
And, it could be a software problem. I don't know if this sequence will help, but do it anyway because it seems to solve problems on other Leopard systems.
1.) Disable Time Machine back ups
2.) Open Disk Utility and Run Repair Permissions
3.) Run Verify Disk. If it passes go to step 4.
4.) Download the 10.5.5. Combo Updater from http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_5_ComboUpdate
5.) Run the Combo Updater and restart
6.) Run Disk Utility Repair Permissions again
Then enable Time Machine and keep your fingers crossed.
Let me know if any of that helps.

  • Time Machine backup frequency and clean restore method

Just started using Time Machine on my late 2014 Mac Mini (Mac OS X 10.10.2) with an external drive (WD MyBook 3TB USB 3.0). Is there any way to change the Time Machine's backup frequency, let's say once a day or once a week instead of hourly?
Also, in the worst case scenario in which my Mac mini's hard disk fails to operate, how should I have a clean full restore on a new disk installed? Is my external bootable because of the Time Machine backups in it? And if not, do I use Mac App Store and install Mac OS X Yosemite on it? Further more is the an (automated) procedure to create a recovery start up disk for my system?

" Is there any way to change the Time Machine's backup frequency": No, but making a backup doesn't slow down at all
"is there an (automated) procedure to create a recovery start up disk for my system? That's one of the Time Machine features.

  • System crashing when Time Machine backup starts

My MacBook Pro has crashed 4 times today. The first 2 times I wasn't around to see the crash, I just saw the message that the system had crashed and that I needed to hold down the power button and restart.
The 3rd time it happened I noticed that the Time Machine backup process had just started before the crash. I restarted the computer, manually started a Time Machine backup, and it crashed again.
It seems that the crashes are happening when Time Machine tries to backup to my Time Capsule.
Anyone have any ideas for me to try to get it working correctly, or any ideas on what exactly might be causing it? Maybe a problem with my Time Capsule? I noticed on my wife's MacBook that her Time Machine backup had failed today too. Her MacBook has not had any system crashes though.

    Hi Garner,
Yes, you'll erase it with Disk Utility (make sure that you don't have any other information on the drive that you don't want to lose!).
So when you try backing up the other machine manually, does it work? If your other backup is actually working, you might want to try just erasing the old backups for the one machine that won't work and see if that helps (to avoid backing up both all over again). Just because my experience was that we had to format the drive doesn't mean that you'll necessarily have to.
And yes, if you don't ever mount the drive outside of Time Machine, that should be OK.
Hope that helps! Enjoy the long, boring backup process (sorry about that...).
    —Hazy

  • Each Time Machine backup grows and grows. How do I stop this?

Hi everyone. In basic terms, let's say that my external LaCie 3TB hard drive has 2TB of data. This 2TB includes my Time Machine backup. That means that I have 1TB of free space. My last backup was one week ago (I don't keep my external HD hooked up because of travel and I don't care for so many frequent backups). Right now I am backing up, and the backup is 30GB larger than last week. THERE IS NO WAY I MADE 30GB OF CHANGES IN THIS PAST WEEK! At the most, I probably made 1GB of changes. This situation has happened before, so it seems that with each backup (every time I reconnect my external HD for the sole purpose of backing up... Again, I don't leave my HD connected so I back up manually whenever I feel like it, instead of automatic), my data seems to have grown by dozens of GB. Dozens! I'm gonna run outta space soon if this keeps up.
I've read a number of threads on this topic and checked out Pondini.org but my one question does not seem to be answered:
How do I stop my backups from growing so big when I know for a fact I did not make big changes?
This does not equate. If I made 1GB of changes (I'm guessing), then why does Time Machine back up an additional 29GB?
I'm considering ditching Time Machine and backing up totally manually, like, dragging/copying/pasting files and folders from my laptop into my external HD. At least that way I can control and understand that 2TB of data means 2TB, not: "Surprise! 2.03TB... 2.5TB... 2.75TB and mysteriously growing!"
Any help would be appreciated, please. Also, I don't know code and I can't do open-source stuff and I don't know jargon. I also don't do advanced stuff like Parallel (I don't know what that is). If you could please help a dummy like me with plain-speak, that would be beyond awesome. Thanks!

  • Two Discs shown for wireless time machine backup., "Data" and "Extreme"

I have a new 1TB iMAC 24" connected to Time Capsule via ethernet and wireless, one MacBook connected to Time Capsule via ethernet, and another MacBook that uses wireless. The iMAC and the ethernet-connected MacBook backup just fine using Time Machine. When I try a wireless Time Machine backup from the wireless MacBook, the backup fails and I get the "unable to ... image ..." message (don't remember the exact wording). When I try to "Change Disc" in Time Capsule preferences, I see two discs, one labeled "Data" and the other labeled "Extreme." Which one should I choose?

  • Time machine backups cache and temp files?

Just bought a new external usb disk and used it as the time machine backup volume. All time machine configurations are remained as default, so it would backup all my current HD. While watching it estimating the time that the first backup would take, a question jump out in my mind:
Will time machine backup all files "honestly"? Will it make a copy of every file including the Internet cache and temp files when I'm browsing websites? I'm used to watch youtube a lot, and the temp flv file would be large (though I don't know where it is stored on Leopard). If these files would be backup-ed as well, I think it would be a great waste of disk space.
Can anyone confirm that those caches and temp files would be copied or not? If it would, how to prevent this? Thank you.

If you wish to exclude anything from the backup simply drag the item into the Exclude list. For example, you can save considerable space by excluding the /System/ folder. Cache files would be found in the /Library/ and /Home/Library/ folders. Each folder contains a folder named Caches. • Time Machine: backup files and erase drive

My 1TB external Time Machine HDD is nearly full. I’ve backed up up the last two years of Documents and Pictures files from Finder on another external drive, so Is there a way to find the latest TM versions of Documents and Pictures file on the HDD, restore them to my desktop to make sure I didn’t miss anything in the backups, and then wipe the TM disc and start fresh?

  • Time Machine works great and then.....................

Time Machine has worked great since December and now I get an error message which has happened five times since I upgraded to 10.5.3. The error message says, "backup failed with error: target volume is read-only". The Console says,"Macintosh /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd196". Not sure why this continues to happen. Have 107.4GB remaining on the Maxtor 260 external HD. Any idea's?? HELP!!

Sorry for the wait:-( I opened the folder and the dates are May 2008. I am just wondering where the documents from December - May are? Why can't I see the Time Machine dates between December and May? Why would any back up material expire? Why would Time Machine "remove" any data that's supposed to be backed up? Here's what I posted on another forum, without result....
Time Machine has worked excellent from December to May, without incident. The first week in May I started to get error messages that the backup volume was too large for the existing GB available. It was saying that it required 108.0GB but that only 107.4GB was available. The external HD is 250GBs and there's NO way that it's full. Then the backups just stopped. I added programs to the "do not back up list", to no avail. The back ups just stopped. The error messages said something about "read only". Then one day, they started again. I cannot figure out why. THEN, I opened Time Machine to find that ALL the history from December to May was gone!!!! Where I used to be able to click on any date on the sidebar in Time Machine and go to that day, to see what was backed up....I cannot do this any longer! ALL the back up is gone! Where did ALL this back up go? What the heck happened?? Now Time Machine says," 206.1GB available of 232.8GB" Cannot figure out what happened?? Any ideas??

  • Time machine backup starts, stalls?

Hi - I'm running MBP, 10.7.4, trying to time machine my laptop after about a month of travel.  Time machine starts the backup, indexes the changes to be committed to the backup, but then doesn't proceed.  It gets 7KB into a backup, and then just stays there.  I just upgraded to 10.7.4 and cleaned up the disk (multiple GB of old files relocated).  I don't think it matters, but trying to use firewire, and my 2 TB backup disk has ample space.

    Hello jacques:
    welcome to Apple discussions.
It is a guess, but I suspect that there is a file that is corrupt that is causing the problem.
Take a look at the log files to see if anything looks strange.
If it were me, I would probably erase and format the external drive and let TM try to do a full backup. Of course, i admit I also keep a fairly recent bootable clone (SuperDuper) that I could use to recover if things did not work properly.

  • Time Machine "prepares" slowly and then does NOT complete B-U.

Since Christmas day, I've had a Time Machine problem.  First it takes about 40 minutes to "prepare" to back-up and then it only backs-up 15gb out of 105gb.
And the animated icon keeps rotating for hours without completing the task.    Could someone please share their knowledge on how I might be able to fix this issue?  It would be greatly appreciated.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Time Machine backup stopped and now external HD cannot be mounted

While I was doing a backup on Time Machine, it cancelled itself and said there was a problem with backing up my Macbook Pro. Now, when I go to Finder, I see that my external hard drive isn't mounted. I checked Finder preferences and I already have the option checked to view external hard drives in Finder
I can view the external hard drive in Disk Utility, and I even tried mounting it from there, but it doesn't. I tried verifying and repairing, and Disk Utility says the external hard drive cannot be verified or repaired.
My external hard drive is a WD 1TB My Book Essentials.

There's a chance a 3rd-party disk repair app, such as DiskWarrior, can fix it, but they're expensive (DW is about $100 US), and there's no guarantee.
You might be able to reformat it, with Disk Utility, and keep using it.  Time Machine will have to start fresh, of course.
Or contact WD.  The drive may be dead or dying.
