Time Machine backups to WD My Book Live terribly slow

I got a Western Digital My Book Live for Christmas and have set it up to take Time Machine backups over my home Wifi network.
Unlike many other posts I've seen, my initial backup took a reasonable amount of time in my opinion.  My initial backup was about 400 GB and it did it over night in about 12 hours.  I did however plug my Macbook into my router via ethernet in hopes that would be faster (the My Book is also plugged into the same router via ethernet).  This was 2-3 weeks ago.
Since then, I have set Time Machine to off as I use my Macbook at work each day and manually tell Time Machine to backup when I'm at home with my computer.  I didn't want Time Machine to constantly have errors while looking for my backup disc when I was at work and not at home.
I have been trying to a manual backup all weekend now with no luck.  I have approximately 5 GB to backup, and Time Machine is only backing up 50 MB an hour if that.  I have even plugged in my computer via ethernet again.
Any ideas on how to speed this up?  I've also read a lot about Spotlight indexing slowing TM down, but I don't think Spotlight is indexing right now.

Agreed that is crazy slow.
WD use to be problematic for Macs, is this still the case?
Did you you reformat the WD with the correct partitioning scheme and format ; and get rid of the proprietary backup software?
Also TimeMachine if left on, can take local snapshots, and maybe be a benefit to you.

  • Time Machine v western digital my book live fail second backup

HI I am using iMac 27 inch, running Lion.
I used Western Digital Mybook live as my time machine backup.
I follow the instrustion step by step, its work fine.
However, when I restarted my mac. Then its start fail to do continues backup.
I can't do any backup anymore. Its always show fail.
Anyone have idea how to deal with this?
    Thanks.

    Sorry, no answer from me.
I seem to have a similar problem with an WD drive.
TM says it cannot connect to the drive eventhough I can acces the drive and see the sparesbundles.
The problem started when using Mavericks.
i think I will set up another way to make back ups from my Mac's.

  • Time Machine restore from WD my book live duo

Dear all and especially anyone out there who may be able to help me.
I have a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion, a WD mybook live duo 3/6tb on the LAN, all wired.
It has been backing up through Time Machine fine until my MacBook crashed earlier this week so I have a fairly
recent snapshot of my MacBook before the crash.
I wanted to restore, after a Hard Disk erase which seemed necessary, from Time Machine but I couldn't make it work
as it kept asking me for user names and passwords of the NAS (which I entered of course) only
to result in error meesages saying the 'share' didn't exist. (Despite the fact that it does immediately
recognise the backup and location on the NAS.)
WD support advised me to first reinstall OSX ML and then use the regular Time Machine
    functionality to restore my Mac.
    - there is no option to fully restore your Mac through the wonderful TimeMachine time travel
functionality. I tried to restore my Macintosh HD back to a recent time point but that resulted in
nothing much (or nothing at all, I don't know). I don't see my old stuff, I still see a kind of vanilla
    OSX ML installation.
    - using the restore functionality (CMD-R during startup) and the time machine restore option,
results in the same nagging for names and passwords and error messages that the share
    doesn't exist.
WD support couldn't tell me what the share name (and possibly password) would be for where it stores Time Machine backup
files (it doesn't show up in the list of shares when you look in the WD dashboard) and that makes sense to me as when you
tell Time Machine to use the NAS, it doesn't ask you for anything in terms of shares or passwords either.
So here I am: with probably a very good and recent complete backup at my disposal but no way of restoring it to my Mac.
So all I had and trusted to Time Machine is lost.
Is anyone out here who can help me? Anyone with a similar experience and hopefully solution? (That I can understand....I am a Mac user! :-) )
    I would be enormously grateful!
    Greetings from Amsterdam,
    Eric

Hello Eric, not sure if this helps or is exactly what you are looking for as I am unfamiliar with the NAS issue you have.  However, I recently restored my computer from Mavericks back to Snow Leopard using my WD mybook.  At first I was unable to use the WD mybook for restore, as is was not recognized by the computer after the menu came up from pressing "command R" during start up.  I attributed this to the WD software requiring a password to access the drive.  This is the same password that you (anyone who owns a WD mybook) have to supply each time you want to use time machine to back up files.  There is a simple remedy I found.  You need to go to your applcations and select "WD SmartWare," type in your password, then select the "Settings" tab at the upper right hand conner.  Then select "Set up drive."  On the right side of the window there is the "Set Security Options," sign in using your password in the box displayed under "password," then select "Remove Security."  The last step would be to save the security setting, and you are all set to use your WD mybook without a password for full system restoration.  So when you restart your computer and hold (or as I found press many times) the "command R" to access the restore window at start up, you can select restore from time machine, and have your WD mybook now appear in the timemachine device window, as the device is not password protected anymore.  Once your computer is restored you can follow the same steps outlined above to reinstate your password for your WD mybook.  Best of luck,
    Marc

  • Time Machine backup automatically deletes address book

I accidentally deleted all contacts in address book.  When i attempt to restore the address book from time machine, the address book is restored then automatically deletes all contacts again.

In case it will help anyone else, this is the rather complicated procedure worked out with Apple Support to restore Address Book to an earlier state.  Hopefully Apple will consider a switch of some sort to restart or re-initialize the contacts which would greatly simplify the procedure.
If using iCloud, uncheck Contacts box in System Preferences>iCloud
    Quit Address Book
Restore Address Book folder in User/LIbrary/Application Support to previous version with Time Machine
Trash all Address Book preferences in User Library/Preferences
    Log Out/In or Restart
Start Address Book and verify desired address book version is now available
If not using iCloud you are done, otherwise you need to create new Address Book Folder with current file dates that contains desired previous data
First Go to Web version of iCloud Contacts and erase all contacts
From Address Book Export vCard with All Contacts
Export vCard for each manually defined group
    Quit Address Book
Trash Address Book folder in User/Library/Application Support
Trash all Address Book preferences in User Library/Preferences
    Log Out/In or Restart
Start Address Book and Import vCard with All Contacts
Import vCard for each defined group one at a time and:
Check review duplicates and keep new
Select Last Import for each group and manually assign to Group Name
Re-Check Contacts box in System Preferences>iCloud
New address book should populate to iCloud and other devices

  • Time Machine Backup through BT Homehub 2

    Hi All,
Have just purchased a WD My Book Live that I am running through a BT Homehub.
I have selected the drive as the location for backup using Time Machine.
It starts to backup fine but soon stops and the internet cuts out.  The only way to get it working again is to reset the BT Homehub 2.  It works again for a few minutes and then causes the connection to drop.  It not only loses connection on my mac but also all other computers, PC included, that are linked to the hub.
As far as I am aware the hard drive and time machine are compatible with the homehub.
Anyone have any ideas as to why the connection is dropping?
I would appreciate any help on this.
    Many thanks in advance

Are you backing up Lion as not all TM capable external drives are updated to Lion TM?? Double check firmware updates for the WD My book live.. if this is an issue.
    http://9to5mac.com/2011/08/03/western-digital-fixes-time-machine-incompatibiliti es-with-my-book-live-series/
Apple of course would not deliberately make all 3rd party devices using AFP incompatible but did manage to do so with lion. cough gollum.. gollum.
Now next step is just the networking.
Is this using wireless or ethernet?? If wireless test with ethernet.. as that has much less issues.
Test using ethernet directly to the WD Mybook. This is to test if the issue is the BT hub. Not everything works with protocols that Apple uses, and Time Machine is not straight TCP/IP.
Your assumption of compatability is needing to be tested. Especially as you are not using a TC to backup to.

  • Copying Time Machine Backup

    hi
i'm transferring Bacckups.backupdb to a new external hardrive - however, when I copy over the file structure is disrupted
So on the original drive everything is correct file structure... Backups.backupdb/MyMacbookPro/x14 dated folders
after copying to a new drive 3 of the dated folders are in the correct place and the other 11 (including 'Latest' folder) are sitting in the directory above
    like this Backups.backupdb/MyMacbookPro + x11 dated folders/x3 dated folders
When opening up Time Machine it only sees those 3 dates and there seems no way of transferring the folders
i've tried an number of different things, anybody have any further suggestions?

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
First, open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Options button. You may have to unlock the settings first by clicking the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Authenticate as an administrator.
Delete the volume you're going to copy from the list of backup destinations. Then turn Time Machine OFF.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased. That shouldn't be a problem, because you don't want to mix backup and non-backup data on the same drive anyway.
In the TM preference pane, select the new volume as a backup destination.

  • Problems when Copying Time Machine Backups to another Drive

MacBook Pro Retina 250 GB SSD (mid 2013) and Mavericks:
I had a 1.2 TB TimeMachine Backup on a 2x3 TB RAID1 Thunderbolt Drive and wanted to continue these on a 1x3 TB MyBook (RAID1 appeared to me not very appropriate for TimeMachine Backups as I have always two redundant external archives for all my data, except system, applications and libraries)
i did this 3 months ago, shifting /copying the Backups from a 1 TB Passport Drive to the 2x3 TB RAID1 Duo. I followed strictly the recommended procedures on formatting the new drive. It took many hours, but there was no problem.
Now, shifting from the 2x3 TB RAID1 Duo to a 1x3 TB Drive took again 7-8 hours, but short of completion, copying the Time Machine directory Backups.backupdp to the new drive, the system said that there are files, unable to convert (???). See two of the messages.
The Backup directory on the new disk is some 40 GB smaller than on the original disk – and grayed out, i.e. unable to open.
Again I followed strictly the instructions for formatting the new drive, as I did earlier. The only difference in between the two actions:
    a Mavericks update from 10.9.1 to 10.9.2
a pages, numbers and keynote update, which I deleted after a few tries and I reinstalled Pages9 etc. again The simplified apps were useless for me, as too many of the standard features of iWork 9 - an ergonomic, simplier but almost full alternative to MS Office – are missing.
    What could be the problem?
Another message, the one about "unable to convert", I missed the screenshot...

  • Time Machine Backup transfer to another external drive

    Hi all,
I keep my Time Machine backups on an external HDD drive (portable USB).  I have a larger drive with more space, and wanted to copy my the backup to the larger drive.
My the Time Machine backup file folder is around 750GB.  When copying the Backups.backupdb file over to the new HDD the process hangs in Finder.  I wonder if there a way to successfully copy it, since the Finder does not seem happy to work with such large chunks of data.
    Thanks

Although Apple documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
This technique will only work if the volume you're copying to is the same size, or larger than, the one you're copying from.
First, open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button.
If the volume you're copying was encrypted by Time Machine, you may have to unlock it first. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar of the Disk Utility window.
Turn Time Machine back ON and select the new volume as a backup destination. You can also continue to use the old volume, if you wish. The two will be alternated when both are available.
CAUTION: If the volume you're copying is corrupt, as shown by Repair Disk or Verify Disk in Disk Utility, then that corruption will be copied to the new drive. Don't copy data from a corrupt volume on a malfunctioning drive. Put the drive aside and don't use it until you're sure you'll no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and take it to a recycling center. Do the same if the Restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • Unable to Transfer Time Machine Backups?

    Hello community!
I'm having trouble copying 1TB of Time Machine backups to a fresh 4TB drive.
The 1TB drive is formatted AMP, Mac OSX Extended (Journaled), 1 partition, and has 11GB free. It has 2 machines backed up on it. One is a pre-Intel Dual G5 PowerMac and the other is an i7 MacBook Pro with 2 profiles/accounts.
The 1TB backup drive is working perfect to date and I needed extra space to ensure my backs are safe. Plus I am adding a new machine to the backups.
The new 4TB drive is formatted with GUID, Mac OSX Extended (Journaled), 1 partition. I have ignored ownership permissions. When I drag the backup folder from the old drive to the new it asks me for a password. I enter it. It then begins "preparing to copy to <new 4TB drive>."  After about 1.5hr and 2,200,000 items prepared, I get this prompt...
"You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named "Backups.backup".
My options are Skip, Stop, or Continnue. I hit continue. It begins to copy the data.
Error 1 @ 750GB: "Blank" cannot be converted. Please install a newer version of iWork.
Error 2: The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items.
Error 3: The operation can't be completed becasue an unexpected error occured (error code -8062).
Error 4: The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items.
Error 5: The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items.
At this point it just hangs at 750GB of 915GB.
Both are external. Both attached using USB to the i7 MacBook Pro.
What's the hiccup? AMP vs GUID? Pre-Intel & Intel back ups? 2 Accounts on one machine? It seems to be a permissions issue, but not sure how to troubleshoot this without messing up my backups.

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

Do anyone know what to do?

I traveled for a few months w/o my backup system available, but it ran fine for 2 days upon returning home. I have 2 MacBook Pros I run Time Machine backups over my network to a Western Digital MyBook attached to an Airport Extreme.
I started seeing Time Machine failures a few days ago, and noticed that my drive was spontaneously disconnecting, it seemed to happen right after TM had run through its process to identify files needing backup. It generated a generic error 11 in console, but more specically
hfs: unmount initiated on Time Machine Backups on device disk2s2
In efforts to clean it up I installed new firmware on the drive and ran the Verify backup from If you can't back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine -
I let it for a while as its doing a full backup but it has not stopped like before with the "backup failed message".

  • How do I import address book from time machine backup

My address book was populated on an imac running Lion and I used time machine to back up to an external hard drive.
The imac crashed and I've purchased another one running  Mavericks.
How do I import the contents of my address book from the backup on the external drive to the address book on the new imac?
Whenever I try to select or open an earlier version of the address book in the backup applications folder on the external drive, I get a message saying that I can't open the file because it is a time machine backup.
There is also a diagonal line going through the address book thumbnail icon and various other applications in the backup applications folder and I get the same error message informing that these apps are time machine backups.
If you have a solution please be as clear and precise as possible with instructions as I am not a computer boffin.

    Here's the situation:
I have a G4 with Tiger OS that has 2 years of saved emails and Address Book entries. I just got a G5, installed brand new drives, and did a fresh install of Leopard. I did not use Migration Assistant during the install, because I have no router.
Then I connected the 2 'puters with firewire, and started the G4 in Target Mode, and attempted to Import my old mail and Address Book. I diddled around and was able to import my old mailboxes. I did just realize, though, that only about half the emails were imported; there's a huge gap of nearly a year up until I stopped using the G4.
Also, when I go to the Address Book and try to import my old one, it shows up not as a solid icon that I can select, but a ghostly icon, for lack of a better word, and it will not let me select it.
I really thought this should be easier and less painful. I'm open to suggestions, including whether I should try to use the Leopard install DVD to try the Migration Assistant with a Firewire connection or an ethernet cable.
    Thanks.

  • My time machine backup of address book and iphoto etc wont open

So I'm about to do a bunch of stuff on my computer and want to make sure that my time machine backups are going to be able to be restored and that I can unpartition my bootcamp drive safely. I will be downloading SnowLeopard, Parrallels, and some other software. I really want to make sure that certain apps, such as address book, iphoto, and itunes have been backed up correctly and that they will be able to be restored. When I opened my time machine backup folder and clicked on those three apps, it gave me an error code. I don't want to start doing all of the things listed above without being confident that I will be able to recover any stuff that may get lost. How do I accomplish this?
Also, how do I unpartition my drive to get rid of Bootcamp?
    Thanks

  • I am running my first time machine backup onto a Western Digital MyBook Live.  It is taking forever.  Is there antivirus software running in the background or any other settings I need to change to speed it up?  Also I am on a wireless network.

I am running my first time machine backup onto a Western Digital MyBook Live.  It is taking forever.  Is there antivirus software running in the background or any other settings I need to change to speed it up?  Also I am on a wireless network.

The initial Time Machine backup can certainly take a long time over wireless. Days, possibly. It's impossible for anyone here to be able to predict how long it will take, and wireless environmental conditions can change at any time.
Is there antivirus software running in the background
Only you can determine that. If you're using third party AV software, anything is possible.
NAS devices may not be compatible with Time Machine, regardless of what their manufacturers may claim. Even after the Time Machine backup completes, your backup may be unreliable. You may not discover that until you need to rely upon the backup for some reason, and corruption can occur months or years from now.
Time Machine supports the following backup configurations:
    A locally mounted volume
    Time Capsule
A volume resident on a USB hard disk connected directly to a Time Capsule or current production AirPort Extreme Base Station.
That's it. Any configuration other than the above list places you in an experimental category. If your backup fails, you're on your own.

  • Restoring Address Book on new computer from time machine backup of old comp

    Hi,
Just bought a new computer and figured that e-thing I need is in the time machine backup. I am having trouble though finding my Address Book data. If someone knows how to do this, I would appreciate it very much,
    Thanks,
    Crazy

Hey mate... well I never use migration assistant cos i always like to have a totally new system on the new computers without the quirks of the last one.
Can you use migration assistant once you JUST to get hold of the Address Book or do you also need to import a whole bunch of other stuff... I just don't know cos I have never used it.
    Thanks heaps,

  • Address Book - retrieving contacts from Time Machine backup

The only back up of my address book that I have is on a Time Machine backup for my old computer which I no longer have.
I have a new computer that I did not do a migration to (from my old computer). But I want to put my contacts from the Time Machine backup (from my old computer) onto my new computer.
    How can i do this????
    Thank you!

I had the same problem,(Only I'm trying to recover Contacts after my HD crashed) followed the path, you suggested, and installed in the new HD address book folder, only had to go back and delete the other files that were in new Address book folder, that did not match the old folder.
And Hallelujah!!!! 153 cards were restored thank you very much!!!
