Time machine bars+ dates in purple and backup disk not visible in migration

My HD has been replaced recently by Apple due to a fault. Before it was sent away a backup was completed with Time Machine to an external samsung HD. When i recieved my laptop back it had been returned to factory settings. After plugging in the external HD with the recovery on it, Time Machine detected it and allowed me to enter time machine. The dates and bars from the last backup are visible on the right hand side of the screen, but they are a see through purple colour and won't allow me to click on them to then restore. I then tried to use Migrate, but it gets stuck on the 'identifying source' page, where it stays indefinitely. This means i am unable to restore my Macbook Pro to how it was before it was repaired.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I should make clear that I am restoring a 50GB Time Machine Backup from an external disk to the Macintosh HD device. The external disk is 1TB and has 800GB of unused space.

Time machine fails backing up with a "backup disk not found" error after upgrade to Lion 10.7.2. I've erased and reformatted the drive; reconnected Time Machine(it saw it) and began a new backup. The backup starts again but fails before completing with backup drive not found error. I used the 10.7.2 combo update. Any help on how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
After waiting since October for a fix, I have now upgraded the firmware on the Time Capsule and installed the new Airport Utility, released yesterday, and the situation is even worse.
Up until now, the Airport Utility had an option to disconnect all drives manually and the Time Capsule would then work until the next reboot – a temporary (?) work-around.
Now that option does not exist in the new-look Airport Utility. And the Airport Utility installation can’t be rolled back and the old utility won’t restore.
The sparesbundle is still not accessible. Anyone worked out a work-around in the new environment yet?
I have another Time Machine backup working fine to a trusty old Lacie Drive so erased the one on my Time Capsule to see if that works. I have renamed the Capsule and the Time Capsule Drive.  But to build another full backup will take at least two days and I shall be away from tomorrow and am reluctant to leave the Capsule and computer up and running for a week. And I’ll bet the sparsbundle will still be nowhere to be found.
How can Apple screw up so badly when they are to become the richest company in the entire world and – soon – will have more cash in the bank than the entire United States? Can’t they afford someone who really can sort this out? Especially when a Firewire connected hard drive – my trusty and simple LaCie – works fine.
    Words, almost, fail me.

  • Can anyone tell me what this Time Machine error means? The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features?

Can anyone tell me what this Time Machine error means? The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features?

    AFP - Apple Filing Protocol
The Network Attached Storage (NAS) that you are pointing Time Machine at does not have the features needed by Time Machine in order to do its Thing.  Time Machine needs some specific features that are not typically available on generic networked storage devices.
There are manufactures that support the Mac OS X HFS+ file system formats and implement all the needed AFP protocol packets necessary so that they can be used with Time Machine, but apparently yours does not.
If you are not using a networked mounted volume for Time Machine, then more information will be needed about your Time Machine setup.

My time machine will not back up. I get a Time Machine Error message that reads: "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Backup/(myname)'sMacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.
I have not been able to back up for two weeks, I think this occurred after an update to the operating system, but I am unsure.
How do I correct this problem?

Have you tried restarting the computer? Also, see Time Machine Error from this pages sidebar under More Like This.

  • Time Machine won't restore a critical backup - disk space not sufficient error

Using Time Machine Restore Backup says my Macintosh HD has 55 GB available. I need to restore a 50GB Time Machine Backup from an external disk to the Macintosh HD device as the transfer destination of the restore copy it it gives me a message 'This Disk does not have enough space to restore your system'. In fact trying to restore all my many time backups over the past months give the same error even though the backup size is less then my Macintosh HD destination.
So I used the Time Machine software to delete many of my documents in the backup that I want to restore, now it is 30 GB through the Time machine finder, but restoring still gives me the same error. However, time machine made a new backup of my system today of 30 GB but when I go through the backup process using this, there is no error about there not being enough space.
It seems although the finder in Time Machine recognises that file is just 30 GB, in the restore process it doesn't recognise that file has been reduced to 30GB

If you're trying to add a large amount of data all at once, and you get an alert of insufficient space, then from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Time Machine
If the padlock icon is closed, click it to unlock the settings and authenticate. Turn Time Machine OFF, then back ON and close the preference pane. Restart the computer. Test.

  • HT201514 Time Machine gives following error message;- The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/JOE OTOOLE's Computer.sparsebundle" is already in use. What does it mean?

My normally reliable Time Machine is giving following error message;-
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/JOE OTOOLE’s Computer.sparsebundle” is already in use.
What does it mean and how do I deal with it?

I have loaded it into ML using a great and free utility unpkg.. it probably works much the same as Pacifist.
Locate your downloaded 5.6 dmg file.. click it so you can see the pkg but don't bother opening it.
    Download, install and run unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Drag the airport utility 5.6 pkg over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory on the desktop.. named AirPortUtility56.. drill down to Applications, Utilities and you will find the unpackaged utiity.. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it where you are..

  • Time machine couldn't back up seagate backup plus, Not Detected...

I just bought the Seagate backup plus in December when my overly fragile macbook air screen cracked & I had to have it repaired...Anyway, of course I wanted a backup before sending it for repair.
I had nothing but trouble setting it up & getting it to make a backup, right out of the box & had to email, then call tech support.  It had been working fine, until I updated whatever the latest version of Maverick's or whatever update came out.  It has not backed up since April 16th.  The light comes on for the backup plus.  I googled & found something about firmware, so I went through that download process & it said the backup plus was up to date.  I plug it into the USB & still nothing.  It's just an error message saying "Backup delayed", then I click on Back Up Now & get an error saying Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Seagate Backup Plus Drive".  The backup disk could not be found.  Make sure the backup disk is connected or select a different backup disk.  How wonderful.  I also went to the Seagate website and found a troubleshooting guide, which was also worthless.  The only thing it said was that it might be set to "sleep" and going through all this firmware and disconnecting and re-connecting and rebooting was supposed to fix this issue.  I am so frustrated now, I can't even stand it.  It is Finals week, I am in the Nursing program, which believe me is not an easy curriculum & now this!  god forbid my life ever be without frustration and challenges, I feel like I am never ever going to be happy or have a good life, something is always wrong, I hate technology, I spend hours and hours and hours trying to figure things out, & then they just get messed up with an update and never work the same again.

It had been working fine, until I updated whatever the latest version of Maverick's or whatever update came out.
Yes, know the issue.  Did you EVER install any (utterly worthless) hard drive control software that came bundled with that ext. USB hard drive?
OR especially software from a Western Digital drive?
If so youve got a serious issue of data loss (which is why you NEVER ever have a single external backup of data).
You can read all about it here on the last 20 pages:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5475136?start=1365&tstart=0
If you installed (which you should NEVER do) any HD control software, then youve got a serious issue where all your metadata is lost
Metadata is the data about the data on the HD, meaning not total loss, but almost the same as.
Run Etrecheck and post the results:

  • Time Machine no longer can find my backup disk

Since the OSX 10.6.6 upgrade, I am unable to do a Time Machine backup on my MacBook Pro. It is on a network with my iMac which is connected via FireWire to my Drobo. I have never had a problem before with Time Machine being able to find the Sparsebundle that Time Machine sets up on a network connected drive. Now it gives me the message, "The identity of the backup disk has changed.". I tried deleting the Sparsebundle and then letting Time Machine start over. That worked, but the next rime it attempted to backup, I got the same error message.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks -

Sorry to have to tell you this, but backing-up that way is "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See [Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Airport.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
A "full reset" of Time Machine may fix the current problem. See #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
Longer-term, though, you really should find a better way to back up. See #2 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

  • Backing up with Time Machine via "Personal File Sharing" and Airport Disk

I've been using Time Machine on my own Mac at home and want to use it to backup other Macs in my house as well. Right now I'm just backing up over FireWire, but plugging my disk into each of the other Macs one at a time doesn't seem to make much sense.
Besides going out and buying a Time Capsule, Leopard Server, or Xsan, what are my options for backing up multiple Macs to one disk? I've read that using an Airport disk is somewhat risky because of some "premature file transfer confirmation." Has anyone ever used Time Machine w/ Airport Disk and had problems?
I've also noticed that you can back up to shared drives, like if I share my current FireWire disk so people can back up to it, but wouldn't that require for people to connect to the host Mac manually via Finder? And wouldn't that in turn defeat the purpose of automatic scheduled backups?
Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

the only supported option besides Time Capsule is to back up to a hard drive directly connected to a mac running leopard on the same local network. as you mention it would indeed require that this drive be mounted first. you can automate mounting this drive on login and simply keep it mounted at all times. to do that mount the drive of the host Mac on a remote mac and while it's mounted there add it to the login items in system preferences->accounts.
You can also use drives directly attached to an airport extreme base station. that works in the same way as backups to a Time capsule.

  • Time Machine unable to backup. "Backup disk not available"

I have been having issues backing up to Time Capsule for a few weeks. I keep getting error messages. The latest backup attempt was 'delayed'. When I clcik to see why, it says "The backup disk not available". It says the last successful backup was at 8:00 PM tonight, but that doesn't seem to make sense since it says it was delayed.
Are there steps I can take to try and resolve this?
    Thanks

I have consistantly had this problem.
Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk could not be found.
Make sure the backup disk is connected or open the Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk.
If I unplug it and plug it back in it will probably work, although I have had to totally start from scratch a couple times to get it working.
Is this a DHCP issue or how can I avoid this in the future?
    Thanks,

  • Can Time Machine under Snow Leopard (10.6) backup to a wired drive?

I have just upgraded to 10.6 and when I try to run Time Machine the wired drive I was using is not visible. So I run Time Machine Setup and it only offers me the ability to setup wireless drives via AirPort. I don't have a wireless hard drive... What am I doing wrong?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Check the TM drive's *Partition Map Scheme* and Format via the instructions in item #C1 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip.*

  • Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X Lion on MacBook and then use Time Machine to restore to the previous backup I made before reinstalling Mac OS X Lion?

Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X Lion on MacBook and then use Time Machine to restore to the previous backup I made before reinstalling Mac OS X Lion?

My MacBook was not normally booting up. It would turn on, make the Apple startup noise, and the bottom loading bar would progress just a little bit, then my MacBook would shut down. I tried rebooting it many times and the same thing would happen, it would just shut down. Then, I read that I can reset the PRAM (by holding Option+Command+P+R after the Apple startup noise comes). That worked, but now I get a screen that asks me to choose one of the 4 options (see:  http://images.macworld.com/images/article/2012/07/lionrecoveryutilities-289404.j pg). I choose Restore From Time Machine Backup, but it progresses to 17.6% and gets stuck there forever. I tried doing it again, and it got stuck at 17.6% again. That is why I am asking if I should just reinstall Lion, then restore a previous backup on the fresh new Lion?

And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
