Time Machine Beautiful Background - any way to use it apart from TM

The picture of moving universe as the background of TM processes is beautiful. Is there any way to use it apart from TM (screen saver, desktop image) ?

Not easily. It's not a single display. The "moving parts" are separate.
The basic background is at:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Backup.framework/Versions/A/Resources/vortex.p ng
You could select and right-click it, and select it as your desktop picture, but it won't move.
Or display it with Preview, save it as a jpg, import it into iPhoto, make an album containing it, then select the album as your screen saver.

I've been working on a newsletter and have the final version. But I wanted to check something in a verssion I did last week. If I choose the day in Time Machine, is there any way I can view that document without "restoring" it to replace the final version?

You can drag and drop a file from TM to the desktop.
Let's say your newsletter is on the desktop. First thing to do is to add something to the file name, say Newsletter_1.
Next open TM as if it is just another external drive by double clicking the icon. (This is not the same as "Enter Time Machine" which you do when you want to restore.) The file hierachy in TM follows the same logic as on your hard drive. Navigate to the date you want, find the file you want, and drag and drop it where you want it to be. Because you changed the name of the most recent version you can both files in the same space.
    I do this often.
But remember if you make a back up now you will end up with both versions in TM.

  • Time Machine - is there any way to allow it to work with the MacBook Air 2011 lid closed?

When the Air sleeps, Time Machine stops (although it does pick up immediately after the machine wakes).  I had been leaving it on overnight, but Applecare techs tell me there's no need for that, as there are no utilities running at night, contrary to what I'd seen elsewhere.
The risk is that I'll miss the last backup. Is there any way around the problem, other than calling a manual backup and waiting for it?
    This is Lion.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't precise enough. I'm concerned about this (remotely likely) situation:
10:15 p.m., TM backs up, next backup scheduled for 11:15 p.m.
11:10, I put the machine to sleep for the night. Previous backup 55 minutes ago, numerous files changed or added during that time.
7:30 a.m. next day, SSD crashes during wakeup. The last 55 minutes of operation have not been saved to the USB hard drive.
Is there an automatic way to avoid that gap in the backup?

  • Way to use Live video (from camcorder) as a background?

    Hello.
I was wondering if there's any way to use live video (from camcorder) as a background using Keynote.
I am trying to add caption/subtitle on live video to projector.

I haven't tried this myself recently (the last time I tried it, the delay was frozen to no less than 3 seconds), but a user in this thread said he got the delay down to .1 seconds by using QuickTime Broadcaster and altering the .sdp file.
This technique uses Broadcaster to make your computer stream to itself and use the stream file in Keynote.

  • Time Machine white background after installing Snow Leopard

    Hello,
I need bit of advise regarding Snow Leopard Upgrade. I recently upgrade mac 10.5 to 10.6 (Snow Leopard), when I do my normal backup using Time Machine, the background is white. I have restarted my Macbook and also read some of the Mac Forums. I've even followed the steps read in one of the post.
If Barry's suggestion doesn't work, try these:
Do a Repair Disk (not permissions) on your TM drive, via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
Re-select your TM drive via TM Preferences > Change Disk.
If you're using Spaces, try disabling it, at least temporarily.
If you have any sort of video out cable, especially HDMI, try disconnecting it, at least temporarily.
Do a "complete reset" of TM, as in item #B3 Time Machine - Troubleshooting User Tip
However that doesn't work either. Could it be a bug or if there's something I should do to bring time machine back to normal? I like the warp !!!! Thank you

Hi, and welcome to the forums. That was me.
Since then, we've learned that this can be caused by a corrupted Finder preference file, so delete the file:
    +*<your home folder>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Finder.plist+*
and try again. You'll have to Restart the Finder (use the Force-Quit) menu, and re-enter it's preferences.

  • I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time  Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on  what other external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and  how to configure that disk

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

As john noted, eventually that external is probably not going to be big enough, but it certainly is for now. The HD just needs enough capacity to cover the amount of data on your internal HD, not the internal HD's total capacity.
Format/partition the external as follows and you should be set to go:
    1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
    2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
    3. Select the external HD in the left pane.
    4. Click on the Erase tab.
    5. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
    6. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
    7. Click the Partition tab.
    8. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (just one in this situation).
    9. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
    10. Click Apply.
    11. Quit Disk Utility.
Backup your internal to the external. What application are you using to backup with? I highly recommend both SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner.

  • Web gallery - any way to use IPTC data by itself beside metaset??

    Hi,
I try to customize a template. I know that I can use the metasets to include the requested metadata - BUT is there any way to use other fields?
    so far I found
    PageTitle
    metavalue
But even those spaceholders can't be used as i.e. the alt tag.
Is there any way to get for example the Image Name (or other fields from the database) as a space holder??
    Appreciate your feedback.
    Thanks

Hey, wow that was a quick reply
Well all my photos are in Aperture, so I did think that I could grab the EXIF data from there and then place them in text boxes on my pages. I have hundreds of photos and doing it that way could take a long time! I was curious to see if there was something that would automate this for me within iWeb. For example, RapidWeaver allows you to check a tick box to display EXIF data under each photo. That's what im looking for within iWeb

This is a common mistake and I highly advise against it.
1: TimeMachine saves states of changes and thus requires more room on the TM drive than the boot drive it's backing up.
2: Something happens to the TM drive, loss, theft, dropped, power surge, etc., you lose both backups.
3: The storage drive might become a portable need, with it being on the TM drive, now your increasing the risk to the TM backup that something could happen to it along with the storage drive, due to increased movement.

  • Time Machine - Restore very slow - impossible to use

    Hi,
As far as I can tell my Time Machine backups are OK. When I click the back-in-time arrow with a very small file selected it takes several minutes before I can use it again. The TM gives the impression of having frozen. Similarly if I use the Finder to look at the backup files on the external disk the machine spends very long periods of time 'fetching'. I have no reason to suspect my hard disk - it is the same with another disk. I've read all of the postings on this Forum. I am thinking about re-installing my OS from Install DVD (10.5) and updating to 10.5.5!
I see on the Console things like QL ERROR 'Creating thumbnail' time out and wonder if this is relevant.
Any suggestions before I do something silly?
    Bobby

I have now re-installed my system from the instal disk, then the latest combo update. Have checked all the disks to make sure they are OK and healthy. All to no avail - Time Machine simply will not run as intended on this machine. (It works just dandy on my Intel MacBook).
As far as I know Time Machine should work with a PowerPC - perhaps not?
I'm at my wits end. It occurs to me that this is a system problem rather than a Time Machine problem.
    Any ideas are much appreciated.

  • Any way to use filter to exclude tables in navagation pane?

Is there any way to use filter to exclude a set of tables from the table list in the navagation pane? I have a number of tables (15+) starting with the same prefix eg. AB123 that I would like eliminate from the list. They sort right to the top and I always have to scroll down, and go through the show more dialog to see the entire list.
I am sure I'm missing something, but not sure what. Help Center has nothing to offer.
    Thanks
    Glenn

This has been mentioned on the forum before - basically the need for more elaborate ways to filter (multiple conditions as well as 'not like'). It is on our list for future consideration, meaning post-production.

  • Is there any way to use -useLegacyAOT option in FlashBuilder 4.6?

I need to build my ipa with old version of Engine because i have some problems about loading images from outside. Since with Air 15 it is default engine, and i cannot quit Air 15 because of the iTunes specs. I cannot add -useLegacyAOT=yes to compiler options on Adobe Flash Builder 4.6 because it seems that it can be added at FB4.7.
So is there any way to add this options when i am using FB4.6
    Thanks in advance.
