Time Machine best practices after Lion to Mountain Lion upgrade
I've made the upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion and everything seems to be OK.
I have been using Time Machine for backups since I deployed my first and, so far, only Mac (Mac Mini running Lion) in 2011. I run my TM backups manually. Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I have not yet kicked off a TM backup, so my questions involve best practices with TM after an upgrade from Lion to Mountain Lion:
Can I simply use the same drive as I use currently, do what I've always done, start the backup manually, and TM handles gracefully the new backup from the new OS?
At this point, since I have only backups to the Lion system, what I see when I doubleclick on the Time Machine drive is a folder called “Backups.backupdb”, then a subfolder called “My Mac mini”, and then all the backup events. Nothing else. What will I see once I do a backup now, after the Mountain Lion upgrade?
If I for some reason needed to boot to my old Lion system (I cloned the startup disk prior to upgrading to ML) and access my old Lion backups with TM, would I be successful? In other words does the system know that I'm booted to Lion, so give me access to the TM backups created under Lion? Conversely when booted to the new Mountain Lion system, will I have access only to the backups created since the upgrade to Mountain Lion?
Any other best practices steps I should take prior to my first ML backup?
Time Machine is a great straightforward system to use (although I have to say I’ve not (yet) needed to depend on it for recovery...I trust that will go will when needed) but I don't want to make any assumptions as to how it works after a major OS upgrade.
Thank you for reading.
1. Correct. If you want to downgrade to OS X Lion, your Mac will still keep backups created with OS X Lion, so just start into Internet Recovery and select one of the backups made with OS X Lion. If you don't want that Time Machine backs up automatically, you may need to use TimeMachineEditor.
2. After making a backup with Mountain Lion, it will be the same, but with a new folder that belongs to the new backup you have created.
3. See my first answer.
4. One advice: when your Time Machine drive gets full, Time Machine deletes old backups, so maybe it can remove all your OS X Lion backups. However, I don't think that you would need to go back to OS X Lion.
If you have any questions apart from those, see Pondini's website > http://pondini.org

My time machine backup disc has apps from Mountain Lion that won't open now that I have Yosemite. They all say need to be upgraded to Yosemite. Go to app store. But app store sees that I have yosemite so doesn't even show me an udate option. How can Update these files??
How do you know they won't run in Yosemite? You're not trying to fiddle with stuff in your backup from the Finder, are you? If so you are likely to render that backup unusable.
WHen when you restore them from your backup, they should be updateable. -
Time Machine backup from clean reinstall of mountain lion
I have a few niggles before and after installing mountain lion. Previously using snow leopard.
I want to do a clean reinstall of mountain lion and then use time machine to restore files and folders.
I dont want to do a full restore of time machine as i dont want to restore my niggles.
When I currently go into Time machine the restore button is alwats greyed out.
I am therefore not confident of being able to restore files selectively after clean reinstall.
I must admit I dont fully understand how time machine works after reading various tips and instructions.
Can anyone help or steer me in the right direction please.
Niggles include:-
Cant run Kaspersky or Sophos
Shutdown and restart problems
Small Desktop screen in front of blue screen after leaving idle for a while

That button should be enabled once you navigate to a backup and select something.
But it's not going to work that way once you erase the internal HD. That's because the erased drive is treated as being a different one. Since the "old" drive isn't connected, you can't restore things to the place they were saved from, via the Restore button.
But you should be able to select what you want, right-click it, and choose the Restore <item> to ... option, to get a prompt to select the "new" drive.
Also, if you don't use either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant to put your stuff back, Time Machine will do a full backup of the "new" drive. You may be able to prevent that, by telling it to "associate" the "new" drive with the old backups, per #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting -
Server backups, Time Machine, best practices
Hey guys, I've got a Mac Mini running Lion Server that is providing VPN, Profile Manager, and some file sharing to macs and i-devices in my household. I also am using portable home folders for the kids accounts. (and soon I may be doing the same for my account and the wife's account) Connected to my Mini is a Drobo.
Currently I'm using Crashplan to backup data on all of our client machines. (an iMac, and a couple of macbooks) However, I would like to add Time Machine to the mix. Here are my thoughts:
client machines:
- use TM to backup to the mac mini server. (backups stored on drobo)
- EXCLUDE the 'local' (sync'd) home folders for network users, since their home folders are actually stored on the server.
server:
- use TM locally on the server to backup itself to a separate external disk.
- this backup should INCLUDE the users home folders since they're not getting backed-up on the client side.
- optionally install crashplan on the server and use it to backup users' folders as well??
The whole goal here is convenience. I trust Crashplan to backup my important stuff offsite (pictures, videos, etc), but in the event of a disk failure I want an easy, no-hassle way to fully restore a machine - either client or server machine - back to its original state before the disk failure. The only thing that has me scratching my head a bit is the user folder stuff. If everyone had local accounts it would be easy - just use TM to backup everything. But since the home folders (for the network users) are actually stored on the server, with a syncronized version on the client, it complicates things a bit.
Love to hear anyone's feedback on how to proceed. Thanks! It certainly sounds like a solid plan, you're correct in that it doesn't make sense to backup the Home folders for network users, since those are on the Server, and in fact you might be able to get by without TM by considering the local Macs themselves the backups of the home folder, the odds of losing both are highly unlikely, except by some sort of proximity event, like a burglary or house fire (knock on wood). In that way, I would actually say cloud storage would be better, but again, I would be satisfied with just the "backups" being the local machines themselves, and you're going that extra mile by backing said Home folders via TM (I'm assuming via a Time Capsule or external hard drive?).
Since the goal is convenience, you may also consider adding a second drive to your Mac Mini, assuming it doesn't already have one. Currently, I'm using RAID1 (mirroring) with two hard drives in my Mac Mini, so should a hard drive fail, it will automatically boot from the second hard drive and let you know the first drive failed. It's certainly cheaper than a Time Capsule, especially if you have the tech prowess to take apart your Mac Mini and install a second hard drive. I purchased iFixit's kit for adding a second hard drive, and while the $50 cost wasn't ideal, it beat several hundred dollars for a Time Capsule, especially since I don't need Terabytes of storage and I happened to have a spare 500GB HDD laying around... That could be you, too!
As for the Home folders, again I would go the simple route and just use a RAID1 array in the Mac Mini, that way there's no need to backup the Home folders, they're already automatically backed up to the second hard drive with RAID1.
As you can tell, I like RAID, but also, if you go the RAID route, they say HDD read speeds increase (there's some conflict on the Internet it seems, but I believe it... I see around a 20MB/s speed boost, not a huge deal, but it's something). -

Why does Time Machine forget "everything" after Mountain Lion update?
After updating to Mountain Lion (from Snow Leopard), I fired up my trusty external hard drive which contains my Time Machine backups (and nothing else) - of course I had run a backup right before upgrading to be sure. Two things are deeply disturbing: 1) The drive keeps on "rattling" as if a process is constantly reading or writing to it - even with Time Machine "OFF". Why? I (tried to) explicitly disable(d) Spotlight searching that drive, and nothing else should be accessing it! (I wish there was a way to simply turn Spotlight OFF for a while - I suspect it of a lot of crashes I experience).
Anyway, even more disturbing: Opening the System Preference Panel and sliding Time Machine to "On", it claims there is NO backup at all! Oldest backup: "NONE". Latest backup: "NONE". This is B.S.! BTW, opening the "Time Machine" app proper shows all the recent backups, so they are still there. So why doesn't the Time Machine Preference Panel not recognize them? Under these circumstances, is it safe to enable backups??? I am very afraid that if I let Time Machine proceed, it will try to create a full new backup, perhaps overriding all the snapshots from the past that are still stored on that disk. For one, even at 1 TB, my disk is not big enough to take another full backup on top of what's already stored on there. Any advice (other than "buy another hard disk just to be safe")?
O.k., I admit, so far I'm more upset with Mountain Lion than impressed.Dear Pondini,
I am grateful for your advice and encouraging words, but I am (and remain) at my wit's ends as far as Time Machine is concerned. While I'm sure 99.99% of Mac users have no problem, there must be SOMETHING idiosyncratic about my own setup that has consistently crashed TM in the past, and now (after upgrading to Mountain Lion), it simply refuses to work EVER. Mind you, I'm NOT a "hacker" who installs non-standard software or likes to poke around in the Kernel.
Below is a shortened version of the Console output during my latest attempt - after 3 tries (after running disk utility to repair my permissions and check the hard drive), it never makes it beyond about 4 Gb before crashing. (And, what's worse, if I don't immediately react, TM very often crashes the whole computer to the point where NOTHING works anymore - requiring a restart. Even with Mountain Lion).
Thanks for any offer of help from anyone... SK

I have a 500GB Time Capsule that has 248 GB used. After upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion, Time Machine reported that there was no longer enough room on the TC to complete the backup. Surely the new system files aren't taking up over 200GB? Does it somehow want to copy all of my user files again, even though the vast majority of those haven't changed since the previous backup?
I'd like not to have to upgrade to a larger TC just because of a system upgrade.
Thanks in advance. If it is working as expected, what do you need with the old backup?
If you want to be able to go back to where you were prior to an upgrade, isolate that backup and don't use it again. As far as Time Machine can tell, the whole drive changed.
The link I posted contains probably everything that anybody knows about Time Machine and how to manipulate it to work as you would like as opposed to how it was designed to work. There are FAQs to continue a backup as opposed to starting fresh, but I wouldn't recommend it for the reasons above. Pondini probably doesn't, either.
If you are going to do a wholesale upgrade of the OS, I would create a bootable clone using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. A bootable clone on an external drive can have you back up and running instantly if the upgrade fails in any way. If the upgrade goes fine, store it away in case you find the current system isn't to your liking. -
Time Machine: Lion to Mountain Lion
I just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion this afternoon and now can't access my Time Machine backup drive - it is saying the password is incorrect.
Now it may very well be that I have forgotten the password, but after doing some research I see that Time Machine has been a bit iffy in Mountain Lion for some people.
Is it possible that there may be an issue with accessing the drive because of the upgrade?Check that caps lock is off. Also check that the keyboard layout is what you think it is. Failing that, immediately start a new backup set on another external drive. Keep the old one around until you're sure you won't remember the password or you'll no longer need the data, then start over.

Hard drive packed up, but had Time Machine backup. I installed new ssd and upgraded to Mountain Lion, but I can't find iPhoto library and photos or iTunes songs? Is there an answer to this? A backup run did not install either photos or songs. Graham
Thanks so much but none of that helped. It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive. I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this. Guess I made my own issue! -
Best way to clean install mountain lion on a new ssd
Am in the process of upgrading my late 2008 MacBook Pro (15"). Have had 8 GB RAM installed for over a year now, as well as Lion, and it's doing fine but want to upgrade it some more to get another couple years out of it. Have ordered a 120 GB SSD and will be installing it in place of the optical drive to speed up boot and programs access. Also would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion IF it'll upgrade performance and add worthwhile features. Assuming that's the case, is it best to do a clean install of Mountain Lion on the new SSD or just clone the existing hard drive? What's the best technique for doing a clean install and for cloning?
Go to the App Store. Sign in with your Apple ID and password. Purchase and download Mountain Lion. It's over 4 GBs so it will take some time to download.
When it finishes the installer will launch automatically and present you with a window for installing. I suggest you quit the installer at this point. Follow these instructions:
Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You
must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes
installing.
2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
the process has completed.
d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
drive size.
3. Use Lion DiskMaker 2.0 to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
You can then install your SSD. Boot the computer from the Mountain Lion USB flash drive to install onto the SSD after you partition and format the SSD:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Boot from Mountain Lion USB flash drive installer. When the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button.
Boot Using OPTION key:
a. Restart the computer.
b. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
"OPTION" key.
c. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
d. Select the USB Flash Drive Installer.
e. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. When formatting is complete quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Install/Reinstall Mountain Lion and click on the Continue/Install button. -
Hot battery and short battery life after download of Mountain Lion.
Hot battery and short battery life after download of Mountain Lion. Any suggestions?
As in, shortly after install?
Note after you install Mountain Lion it's likely that the Spotlight index will be rebuilt. This will take some time and the machine will run hot. After this completes, which could take 1-2 hours, things should return more to normal.
If they don't, I suggest running Activity Monitor and seeing if you can trace what is eating up CPU cycles. -

The same steps that they recommend also work for fixing iPhoto and iMovie.

Best way to (re)install Mountain Lion fresh on a new ssd
Hi, I've been running Mountain Lion on my 2010 Mac Pro 3.2ghz but it's got incredibly slow with only 120 GB on a 1 TB HDD.. I've used every utility to try to clean my old drive and speed things up (DiskWarrior, defragmentation, etc) without much help I don't want to carry over all the stuff to a new SSD. I'd like to start clean with an entirely new OS install of Mountain Lion on a Samsung 512GB SSD. I've got all the software and once it's upgraded I'll figure out which files to carry forward or keep all the data files on another drive with links. I'll figure that out eventually.
Mty present system was built starting with Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion. I purchased licenes for each of the OSes and still have all the software. I may even have Lion on a bootable thumb drive. Do I have to start with Leopard and then move to Snow Leopard before moving to Mountain Lion?
I did try just reinstalling a new OS by booting Mountain Lion and using Time Machine. Still slow...like 75 seconds to boot and spinning wheels.. I haven't tried moving the files and then reinstalling Mountain Lion with a clone then to the SSD. I'd like to start with a new system install direct to the SSD.
Any ideas. Again, I do have all the licenses and could start with Leopard but that seems tedious.FatMac\>MacPro wrote:
You don't need to upgrade anything, as I believe you suspect. A straight install of ML will get you there. I did the same thing on a Crucial M500 last week and it's working like a charm. And that was on a 2010 Mac Pro.
If you haven't installed your Samsung in a Mac Pro bay yet, I'd recommend this which fits perfectly.
Are you saying I can do a standalone install of Mountain Lion by itself with NO previous system? I just checked Apple/s minimum requirements for Mountain Lion =
"Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory

After install of Mountain Lion I have no facetime. It is nowhere in hd and ap store will not allow download.
Will I need to re-instal ML in order to get it back?Where are you, geographically?
I might suggest:
Give this a try:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
After this is completed download and install 10.8.4 Mountain Lion Update v10.8.4 (Combo).
If this doesn't work, then reinstall Mountain Lion:

Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
