Time Machine Buddy says: Stopping Backupd to eject destination disk!
I have a new external hard drive to replace one that failed for Time Machine BAck up. I formatted it and two nights ago, did a successful initial backup which consisted of about 600 or 700 GB (on a 2TB drive) .
Last night, I checked on Time Machine and saw it was "preparing to backup " for 1 1/2 hours. I knew that was not normal so opened up Disk Utility to verify disk. However, Disk Utility just hanged.
The color wheel just started spinning and everything on my screen was frozen, so I powered it down. After two attempts to power back up, the computer finally came back up, but now my new external hard drive is not recognized by either Time Machine nor Disk Utility. I tried powering down the drive, disconnected it from the computer, then restarted the computer twice, and the drive was then recognized
I was then able to do a successful backup last night.
However, this morning, on reviewing Time Machine Buddy, the last line after BAck up completed successfully is :” Stopping backupd to allow ejection of destination disk!”
How did this come about and what am I doing wrong, and how can I fix it?
I am also using Time Machine Editor and have only scheduled backups twice a day. Could this be the problem? Although I have used these two programs before with my other USB external hard drive (™ Editor and ™ Buddy ) without any problems.
I am posting a copy of Time Machine Buddy’s status.
I would appreciate any help , thank you!
P.S. It looks like my external hard drive is ejected? but Time Machine and Disk Utility still have it listed. I tried verify disk again this morning, but it just hanged like the other night.

THANK you, Klaus. Did you send me the link to pondini? Somehow I do not see it here, but got it in my email notification?
Did you say "late" Pondini? So sorry to hear that!
I have searched his website but did not see anything relevant to why my destination disk is getting ejected?
I wonder if I should just disable TM Editor? Same thing that happened originally, again happened this am with my computer freezing, having to power down, etc.
Anyway, thank you for your interest.

Time Machine start then stop after few seconds
Hi,
I've tried to reset Time Machine (trashed the library plist file, erased the backup HD), also installed Time Machine Buddy widget.
When I start a fresh new backup, Time Machine start indexing, then stops without backup anything.
The error log of Time Machine Buddy widget is this:

Time Machine and Time Machine Buddy Widget trouble
I've been having trouble with my Time Machine getting stuck on "indexing backup," so I've done as I've read in some other posts and installed the Time Machine Buddy Widget.
But the Buddy is acting strangely, too. The moment it was installed it was showing a backup log for November 24, 2011. Either it can see nine months into the future or there's something wrong.
I tried reinstalling it. I tried restarting the computer. Same thing. The log appears to show a successful backup, so it's definitely not reflecting what's been happening today, where there's been much spinning and no progress. The one thing I hadn't done is verify the HD. I just did that and found it needed repairs--a problem with the "volume file count." So that's taken care of.
Yes, those failures were sent by backupd. I'll paste a sample of them below. Ours is a pretty simple network. Just the MacBook connecting wirelessly to TM. Doubt it matters, but the TM is in bridge mode, connected to a 2wire modem/router. Generally, it doesn't seem to matter whether I connect via the 2wire signal or the TM signal. Both have been known to fail.
Oh, and even with the repair to the HD, still the same odd date on the widget...
Earlier today I had another smooth backup. Could mean something's fixed, but this is also often how it goes; it'll work fine for a while and then a long streak of nothing but "indexing backup."

In making an attempt to copy my files to a different external hard drive, I ran into several issues with document files that were "read-only" so the copying stops. (they were just a couple of pdfs and photos). I deleted all of those files. I then ran back up again after verifying the external I have designated for Time Machine. (Ive also completely erased, repaired and verified this drive several times over the past few weeks) Backup failed, again.
I feel like my next move is to start deleting the "files" that are causing the errors listed above in TM Buddy (they are mostly photos in iphoto)... but then I realized that some of those errors are associated with the backing up of my iphone.
Just now, I pasted a portion of my system log into Textedit, and the application just hanged... for 2 hours. I finally force quit it.Hi! I did exactly as you said. I was able to backup with my home folder excluded, but was not able to do so after I removed the exclusion. It crapped out 5G before finishing.
Here's the TIME MACHINE BUDDY LOG:

Time Machine backup crawls, stops early. Logs show crash.
Recently had a hard drive crash on me. Since then I've bought a new SSD to replace it, then migrated everything over to from my Time Machine backup.
Now I'm getting frequent crashes, and notably, I'm unable to complete a fresh Time Machine backup. It doesn't show that there is a crash in the Time Machine interface, just stops. The logs, on the other hand, show a crash.
I'm copying them here. If anyone can read through and help me parse it, that would be a great start. I'm running Mavericks on a 15" Macbook Pro, early 2011. Thanks.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
More from the Time Machine Buddy: "Node requires deep traversal:/Volumes/Data" and "reason: kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSibDirs"
I am using a Mac G5 with Leopard. My LaCie data drive failed and I replaced it with a WD MyPassport drive, at which time the failed backups began. The recent file updates do appear in Time Machine, but it appears to back up everything since the last completed backup.Hi Norm,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
(Repair both Drives)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.) -
Unable to back up external hard drive via Time Machine. Says no room but has back ups from two previous Mac notebooks on it. Tried deleting them and now can't do anything. Any ideas?
As john noted, eventually that external is probably not going to be big enough, but it certainly is for now. The HD just needs enough capacity to cover the amount of data on your internal HD, not the internal HD's total capacity.
Format/partition the external as follows and you should be set to go:
1. Connect the external HD to the MBP.
2. Open Disk Utility on the MBP.
3. Select the external HD in the left pane.
4. Click on the Erase tab.
5. Choose the Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
NOTE: if you want to zero the HD (which I always think is a good idea, but does take time), click on Security Options, click the button for Zero Out Data, click OK. The larger the HD, the longer this will take, in some cases several hours.
6. Click on Erase and wait for the entire process to finish.
7. Click the Partition tab.
8. Click on Volume Scheme: and choose the number of partitions (just one in this situation).
9. Click on the Options button (located underneath the Volume Scheme pane) and select GUID.
10. Click Apply.
11. Quit Disk Utility.
Backup your internal to the external. What application are you using to backup with? I highly recommend both SuperDuper! and CarbonCopyCloner. -

Time Machine Buddy not working
Greetings !
Out of the blue, Time Machine Buddy is not working anymore. It doesn't display anything even when backups are running.
Additionally, it has a negative effect on my other Dashboard Widgets.

How can I do to use (useful) Time Machine Buddy OUT of Dashboard ?
Hello dear friends,
How can I do to use (useful) Time Machine Buddy OUT of Dashboard ?
I know there must be a way to use it as an application.
I've noticed TinkerTool can do it, but how do you proceed ?
Does anybody have the solution ?
Thank you for responding
With my kind regards
Olivier HerrbachDear Dave Sawyer,
You're perfectly right, I posted the same question in two different topics.
I apologize for that, but I was thinking
that more people would respond if I used :
1) The "Time Machine" topic (it can also interest people to know there's a widget for T.M.) ;
— and there are other softwares that Pondini describes, like Backup Loupe) —
2) The "Using Snow Leopard" topic, because I was talking about ALL other widgets too.
In fact, I didn't know which one I had to choose for my question (?),
in the way that both topics were concerned.
I'll try in the future NOT to publish the SAME question in more than ONE place.
Thank you very much for your remark
With my kind regards
Olivier Herrbach -
I have a Macbook with OS X 10.6.8 and a 500GB external hard drive, which still has 208.5GB available. For some reason, Time Machine has simply stopped backing up any new files (documents, music, movies--anything). No items are set to be excluded from backups in Time Machine options except for the external hard drive itself. Also, no error messages appear, Time Machine seems to run just fine, but when I enter Time Machine, or look through the files on the hard drive, new files just aren't there. I am not very tech savvy, so I was not able to understand some of the answers people gave to similar questions on here. I did go to Pondini's website and followed as many troubleshooting instructions as I could understand (for example I did manage to do a full reset of Time Machine) but nothing changed. Do I just need to erase the entire backup drive and sart all over? If so, what will prevent this from happening again later on? Please help.
Your TM drive liekly stopped backing up because it hit a series of bad sectors on the drive, to eliminate this all new drives should be Disk Utility > Zero Erased (one step below 7x in Lion) before use.
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
Diversify your backups with bootable clones and archives on DVD's etc so your prepared for anything, including using a PC.
only if you have too of course, but it happens, people just can't afford a Mac anymore.
Most commonly used backup methods explained
So make other backups, then Zero Erase teh TM drive and set it back up again and your problem should be resolved.
If not, then it's data corruption on your boot drive!
You'll know if it's data corruption on your boot drive, when you go to make the clone, it will hang too. -
I've been having a recent problem with Time Machine buddy, and am interested in seeing if anyone else has had similar experience. Basically, Time Machine buddy is screwing up all my other widgets. I trashed it and replaced it to confirm this; adding it to the Dashboard renders all other widgets, including itself, completely non-functional except for moving them around. Manage Widgets also becomes non-functional. I have two questions as a result:
1. Anyone else have this and solve it? and,
2. Since I'm still trying to solve a Time Machine problem, any recommended alternatives to Time Machine Buddy?
TIA,
-ggGeorge Grella wrote:
1. Anyone else have this
yes.
and solve it?
yes. try this:
Sometimes the system logs can become corrupt and the widget is unable to read the contents (freezes).
You can simple delete the system.log and system.log.bz2 files. To do this run the “Terminal” application and at the prompted enter the following command.
sudo rm /var/log/system.log.0.bz2 /var/log/system.log
The system will prompt you for your password. Close the Terminal application and restart the computer. Once a Time Machine backup starts you should see activity in the Time Machine Buddy.
2. ... any recommended alternatives to Time Machine Buddy?
no.

HT3728 Time Machine back ups stopped because Time Machine is already in use
Suddenly my Time Machine back-ups stopped. A pop up states that the Time Machine can't back up because it is already in use. Any ideas? Should I reset the Time Machine?
DetlefThis is just standard Lion and Mountain Lion.
Unplug the TC power cord.. count to 10.. plug it back in.
If you have issues still. Power off and on again the computer.
See C12. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html -
Time Machine backup shows "stopping backup" after just a few Gb.
Time Machine backup shows "stopping backup" after just a few Gb.
Finder shown as "not responding" in Activity Monitor.
1. How to escape from that situation?
2. How to prevent it happening again?
Thanks in advance for help. Thanks for the suggestion, and apologies for the delayed response.
I have had a couple of looks through Pondini's site, but haven't (so far) found exactly what I am experiencing.
In the meantime, I am becoming suspicious of the disk (a Toshiba e-Stor 1Tb) and/or the cable connection. A couple of days ago I set it up with the cable in one of the USB ports on the computer itself, which I understand is supposed to be preferable (to using a hub).
Initially, straightforward copying of folders via the Finder seemed to work, although some failed because the system thought they were 'in use' (another apparently known problem). However, I managed to copy three folders earlier this week, but today, they have simply disappeared from the external disk! The partial backup (from TM) is still visible.
Finder's behaviour is also still rather odd. When I clicked on the external drive to see what content it included, Finder took ages, and Activity Monitor said it was 'not responding' for a time, though that did sort itself out this time, after a few minutes.
To ensure that I have covered everything, I should point out that I have partitioned the disk using the Mac Disk Utility, so that there is a Mac partition and a Windows (FAT) partition that I intend to use for a Windows computer. Apologies for using such bad words on a Mac forum!
