Time Machine - can it backup selected folders and/or files?

Hello All,
I have searched for an answer to this question, but found no answer.
Can I select certain files or folders in TimeMachine to backup, instead of having to backup a whole disk (only).
I am sure I am not the only person with this question, but I could not find a post on this topic.
Thanks for any information,
eholz1

Time Machine is designed as a simple backup system to handle an entire system, and provides only limited flexibility. You can exclude things from Time Machine backups, but there's no way to start with nothing being selected and add just specific folders. If backing up only certain folders and files what you really wish to do, I'd suggest you look into a different backup solution, of which there are many.
Regards.

  • Time machine: Can I target specific folders for back up

As a default time machine backs up your entire drive.
Along with my mac I want to back up a +specific folder+ on my Drobo: an external drive. (it's where I keep my large working files) I don't want to, don't need to and can't back up the entire Drobo.
Currently I am excluding everything on the drobo except the several folders I am working on. I would love to have the option to add folders as well as exclude folders.
Is there a work around I haven't thought of?

    well.... lets see here....
I suggest using SuperDuper or another backup program to auto backup these files to your Drobo. Drobo is RAID so you would not need to back the Drobo up.
Also, I don't prefer the idea of using Drobo for a Time Machine Backup. I know people do it, but it's much better to buy a separate external drive for Time Machine, and use Drobo with SuperDuper. You should feel safe letting your large work files reside on the Drobo. If you want these files to reside on the internal, let SuperDuper run a backup. Good Luck.

  • Time Machine - Can't backup or Erase/Restore Disk - Following Mavericks upgrade

Hi Everybody, I have been looking through the internet to try and solve the issue I am having, I have seen people with similar issues but I can't seem to quite find the answer I'm looking for.
A couple of weeks following the Mavericks upgrade, I have started having issues with my time machine partition on my external hard drive (2TB Seagate - 1TB for Time Machine, 1TB for general large files). It started off with "The backup disk ""Time Machine" is not available" which led me to have a look into the issue. I have tried repairing the disk, which gave me the following error:
And "Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
This then lead me to try to erase the Time Machine partition, as far as I can tell, I don't think I need anything from in the past, and I have backed up most things onto the other half of the hard drive. However I can't erase the disk because of this:
"Volume Erase failed with the error: Couldn’t open disk."
The "Time Machine" volume is also grayed out. I'm really at a loss to figure out how to fix this, I'm not worried about recovering all of my time machine files I just want it to work from now on. I also don't want to lose any of the content that is on the other half of the partition.
I have tried putting volumes into spotlight privacy, but not sure what else I can try?
I'm also having issues reading files from an external server, but I'm not sure if this is related to Mavericks or on our side here.
Any advice would be really appreciated

This is exactly what just happened to me. Did anything work for you or did you have to buy a whole new drive? My 1.5tb time machine partition did what you described, while the other 1.5tb extra storage partition is fine.

  • Time Machine Can Not Backup

At first the error was that the sparsebundle was in use. Manually deleting got it working for a short time, but then I got other, more general errors.  Including ones saying there was no space on the TC, which makes no sense since it's supposed to delete old backups automatically to make space (both my HD and my TC hold 1 TB and the HD is only half full).  Rebooting Apple Time Capsule led to a several days long backup attempt then it failed.  Now it just fails when I try to backup.
"Backup Failed.  Time Machine couldn't back up to "Cyndi's Time Capsule."
Running Mavericks (10.9.3) on MacBook Pro, connection via ethernet.  TC firmware is 7.6.4 (I updated it as part of my troubleshooting).
I'm assuming I need to do a wipe or reformat of the Time Capsule and start from scratch.  But I want to make sure that one, that's the right thing and two, that I do it correctly.
    Any Mavericks-specific advice is welcome.
    Thanks,
    Cyndi

Mavericks latest update was supposed to fix all these problems.. and pigs might also grow wings and fly.
The TC you have is fairly old.. at least 3years. And maybe up to 6years..
What model is it.. A1xxx from the base??
If it is earlier than Gen3.. ie A1355, my advice is to simply replace it.
For a Gen3 it can be worth the effort to see if it will be reliable but know you are living on borrowed time. This model used a less than super reliable hard disk. And the hardware can just breakdown. So 3years is getting to be end time marker for stuff.
Format the disk may be necessary.. I am not sure.
But you certainly need to do a factory reset.
    1.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
    2. Redo the setup with airport utility.
Give the TC all SMB compatible names.. That simply means names that are short.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg Your current name fails. "Cyndi's Time Capsule"
It has spaces and an apostrophe.
    I recommend a name like TCgen3
    For wireless use TCwifi
Anything you like as long as it follow the rules.. short, less than 10 characters is excellent.. make 20 tops. No spaces and purely alphanumeric.
    3. Manually mount the TC.
In Finder use Go, Connect to server.
    Type in the address.
AFP://TCname.local (Where TC name is the new short name. Local is the default domain and seems to help).
or. Even Better if the TC is setup as main router or with static IP.
AFP://10.0.1.1 (this is the default IP of the TC.. type in its IP address but that means it has to be fixed.)
When you do the above you will be asked for a password.. type that in.. public by default. But the new setup may force you to change it.
Don't forget to save it in your keychain.
    4. Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local.
eg for wireless in the network preferences on the computer.
    5. You might still need to keep things awake now and then by rebooting the TC.. if Mavericks forgets where the TC lives just pull the power cord.. count to 10 and plug back in. If it happens once a week.. it is merely annoying.. more often than that.. well I would start seeking another backup means altogether.
I also btw think a Gen3 TC or earlier is going to work better on 7.5.2 firmware. If the above happens I would try the downgrade.. easy to do in v6 utility.. simply hold down the option key while clicking version.
You might need to click other to pick up earlier ones.. but 7.6.1 is certainly more stable than 7.6.4

  • Time Machine can't backup anymore, 1,1TB still available.

Since 10.9.2, my Time Machine have stopped doing backups. I can't connect to the hard drive even with the right password.
All I get is: Connecting to "Time Capsule"...
    Any ideas why this is?

    Because Mavericks is lousy OS.
Reset the TC to factory and start over.. use all SMB names.. that means short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Then manually mount the disk.. in Finder, Go, Connect to server. Type in
AFP://TCname.local (you will need the whole thing including domain which is local by default).
It should then ask for a password to connect.. just type in what you made it or public which is the default.
    Reset TM
    A4
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
and it should then be able to continue backups once it sees the disk.

  • Time machine can't backup SSDC

I'm running Mountain Lion on a MBA with 128GB SSD to extend memory capacity I am using a 128MB SanDisk SSDC plugged into the slot on my laptop. I formatted the flash disk with MacOS Extended (journaled) and started using the drive for storage. I have been using TimeMachine to backup the internal SSD to an external 1TB hard disk without any issues. After I added my SSDC I want to include this drive in my regular backups so I removed the SSDC card from the time machine exclusion list. Removing the item from the exclude list hasn't been a problem - I click on "MBA SSDC" entry and then the negative button. This works except after saving the change and re-opening the time machine options the drive appears in the exclude list again. Despite repeated attempts to fix this problem I can not get the SSDC card to backup. There is nothing special on the SSDC except I moved by iPhoto library to this drive. Any ideas on what is causing this problem?

This is exactly what just happened to me. Did anything work for you or did you have to buy a whole new drive? My 1.5tb time machine partition did what you described, while the other 1.5tb extra storage partition is fine.

  • Backing up my MacBook Air using Time Machine, can it backup while asleep?

I am backing up my laptop for the first time with Time Machine and a USB, will it still backup even when my laptop is asleep? I have noticed that when I close my laptop and then I open it again it connects to wifi again so I think that when its closed it isnt connected to the internet. But im not sure, can someone please help?

When plugged into power and asleep, your MacBook Air CAN and will backup to your TM.

  • Time Machine: Can I backup an external hard drive?

    Hi,
I've been using time machine to back up my internal drive to an external with no probs. its really a boon to use. I make music mainly using logic. I have recently started using an external drive to record all my audio to and to save all my logic projects. My question is:
Can I get Time Machine to recognise and back up my (other, new) external drive that holds all my audio files as well? I thought it might do it automatically when i connected the new drive and also connected my Time Machine dedicated back up drive, but it only backed up my main system drive as before. I can continue to back up manually but I'm keen to use the Time Machine feature to manage backing up my other, new audio dedicated drive - it'll save me time and worry!
    I hope this makes sense!

open system preferencs->time machine->options and remove your new drive from the exclusion list. TM will back it up from now on along with your main drive.

  • Time Machine can't backup. Even not on new Backup Drive.

    Hi!
I tried what was suggested to me in October last year (and which heleped then) https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4391097.
I also trashed the Time Machine settings and recreated them.
And now I also vhanged the backup drive. The result is always the same.
    In the Console I see:

  • Time Machine: Can I backup to more than 1 external hard drive?

would anyone know about this: i have a TM at home in boston which i use when i am there; however, now i am in taiwan where i will have a second TM to use here: apart from naming the two TMs differently on the laptop (macbookpro, tiger), is there anything i should look out for? with many thanks, steven totosy

Other users have successfully backed up their Mac to more than one Time Machine drive. As you stated, name them differently. You also need to switch TM drives, but that's only once after you've arrived at your new location. Note that after extended absences, TM may not want to continue with a backup and force you to create a new backup. I don't recall how much time has passed, but someone has stated 10 days, but I cannot confirm that.

  • My Time machine can not backup as the backup disk image " . . . .sparsebundle" is already in use. ??

my time machine is giving me an error message that says "The backup disk image "voumes/data/..........sparse.bundle" is already in use. Time machine has not completed successful backup for over two weeks.

First, restart your Mac and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this will solve the problem.
    If it doesn't work, see > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html
If necessary, scroll down to section C, comment 12.

  • Time Machine Can't Backup

I am trying to run my Time Capsule backup because it has been over a month since the last backup.
When I click backup I get the error "Time Machine could not complete the backup. The backup disk
is not available." I am running Mac OS X version 10.7.7. I am a newbie to mac and have only been
using one for about 6 months. Any ideas and help would be appreciated.

When you open the airport utility is the TC available?
You might just need to reboot the TC.. have you tried that.. ?
If so try rebooting the whole network.. turn off everything .. restart in order.. modem.. router / TC.. other network devices.. clients.
Then it will probably work.. if not certainly load the older version of the airport utility into Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Reset the TC and start again. Lion does have networking issues with the TC.. sadly.. !
I am also a refugee from the world of windows pain.. and find Snow Leopard great.. solid.. no network issues..
The same cannot be said of Lion or ML.

  • How can I backup individual folders and not the whole disk?

    Hi Folks,
I want to only backup specified folders with TM, just my iPhoto Library and some bits n pieces but notice it only gives the option to backup or exclude whole hard discs.
Does anyone know a workaround for this?
    Thanks
    B

just my iPhoto Library and some bits n pieces but notice it only gives the option to backup or exclude whole hard discs.
In the TM preferences you would need to exclude all the files and folder you didn't want to back up.

  • Configuring Time Machine to backup certain folders and files.

Can it be done? I have 3 externals and don't want it to back up one of them. I removed it from the backup list but it still continues to backup that particular drive. Also wondering if I could configure Time Machine to not backup certain folders. I felt like when I first set up Time Machine, I was able to do this.
    Thanks everyone.

    Hello Warren:
That should be available to you in system preferences>Time Machine>options.
