Time Machine Can Not Backup

At first the error was that the sparsebundle was in use. Manually deleting got it working for a short time, but then I got other, more general errors.  Including ones saying there was no space on the TC, which makes no sense since it's supposed to delete old backups automatically to make space (both my HD and my TC hold 1 TB and the HD is only half full).  Rebooting Apple Time Capsule led to a several days long backup attempt then it failed.  Now it just fails when I try to backup.
"Backup Failed.  Time Machine couldn't back up to "Cyndi's Time Capsule."
Running Mavericks (10.9.3) on MacBook Pro, connection via ethernet.  TC firmware is 7.6.4 (I updated it as part of my troubleshooting).
I'm assuming I need to do a wipe or reformat of the Time Capsule and start from scratch.  But I want to make sure that one, that's the right thing and two, that I do it correctly.
Any Mavericks-specific advice is welcome.
Thanks,
Cyndi

Mavericks latest update was supposed to fix all these problems.. and pigs might also grow wings and fly.
The TC you have is fairly old.. at least 3years. And maybe up to 6years..
What model is it.. A1xxx from the base??
If it is earlier than Gen3.. ie A1355, my advice is to simply replace it.
For a Gen3 it can be worth the effort to see if it will be reliable but know you are living on borrowed time. This model used a less than super reliable hard disk. And the hardware can just breakdown. So 3years is getting to be end time marker for stuff.
Format the disk may be necessary.. I am not sure.
But you certainly need to do a factory reset.
1.
The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
2. Redo the setup with airport utility.
Give the TC all SMB compatible names.. That simply means names that are short.. no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg Your current name fails. "Cyndi's Time Capsule"
It has spaces and an apostrophe.
I recommend a name like TCgen3
For wireless use TCwifi
Anything you like as long as it follow the rules.. short, less than 10 characters is excellent.. make 20 tops. No spaces and purely alphanumeric.
3. Manually mount the TC.
In Finder use Go, Connect to server.
Type in the address.
AFP://TCname.local (Where TC name is the new short name. Local is the default domain and seems to help).
or. Even Better if the TC is setup as main router or with static IP.
AFP://10.0.1.1 (this is the default IP of the TC.. type in its IP address but that means it has to be fixed.)
When you do the above you will be asked for a password.. type that in.. public by default. But the new setup may force you to change it.
Don't forget to save it in your keychain.
4. Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local.
eg for wireless in the network preferences on the computer.
5. You might still need to keep things awake now and then by rebooting the TC.. if Mavericks forgets where the TC lives just pull the power cord.. count to 10 and plug back in. If it happens once a week.. it is merely annoying.. more often than that.. well I would start seeking another backup means altogether.
I also btw think a Gen3 TC or earlier is going to work better on 7.5.2 firmware. If the above happens I would try the downgrade.. easy to do in v6 utility.. simply hold down the option key while clicking version.
You might need to click other to pick up earlier ones.. but 7.6.1 is certainly more stable than 7.6.4

  • My Time machine can not backup as the backup disk image " . . . .sparsebundle" is already in use. ??

my time machine is giving me an error message that says "The backup disk image "voumes/data/..........sparse.bundle" is already in use. Time machine has not completed successful backup for over two weeks.

First, restart your Mac and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this will solve the problem.

  • Time Machine does not backup home/user directory (on separate drive)

I recently installed a SSD into my Mini. Due to size restrictions, my home/user directory has to be kept on another drive. I retained the stock 1TB drive that came with the Mini for this.
Ok, installed the SSD, restored a Time Machine backups (sans user data). Used a different admin user and configured my user to use the 1TB drive for it's home directory (/Volumes/1TB/home/<user>). Restart, log in as my user, all is good. All data, settings, etc is there. Everything looks normal.
Time Machine REFUSES to backup this directory. It will backup the 1TB drive and anyting else I create in it, but not the home directory. I tried every permission trick I could think of or found online. I even tested it further by formatting the 1TB drive fresh, adding a new user, configuring the user to use the 1TB for their home directory and it still won't back it up (this was a test of permissions the OS set, to make sure I didn't change my data perms somewhere along the way). Time Machine would not backup the new user's home directory on the 1TB drive.
Any thoughts? I can't be the first person to have their home directory on a non-OS drive.
If I were to create a folder/file in /Volumes/1TB/<test file> ... Time Machine gets it perfect. It just will NOT touch /Volumes/1TB/home/<anything here>
    Thanks!

Open the Time Machine preference pane and unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Options button. If there is one particular folder with items that are not being backed up reliably, add it to the list of excluded items. If there are many such folders, add your home folder to the list, or add a whole volume (i.e., what Apple calls a "disk.") Save the changes.
Start a backup, or wait for one to happen automatically. When it's done, open the preference pane again and remove the exclusion(s) you made earlier. Back up again and see whether there's a change.

  • Time machine can not select my internal hard drive any more.

    Hi all
Time machine can not select my internal hard drive any more. I only can back up external disks. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    All answers are much appreciated

I don't know the answer but I have the same thing happen. I have two external drives I use for backup. Sometimes it can see one and sometimes another. Then sometimes it can't see either one.  I will take one out for a while then plug it back in and then it may see it.  Maybe it's a cable issue or something but I will be curious to hear what someone more knowledgeable says.

  • Time Machine will not backup Time Capsule drive

I was filling up my time capsule so I bought a new 2GB drive for my backups. It is attached as an air disk on the Time Capsule as I also use it to backup other computers in the house.
My problem is that I am now using the HDD in the time capsule for my iTunes and iPhoto library, so that they can also be shared, but they are not being backed up by TM.
I have checked my excluded drives list and the Time Capsule drive isn't in there.
Any ideas/help/advice on how to get the time capsule backed up too?

Sorry, but Time Machine will not backup a network drive (i.e. TC's HDD or any USB HDD attached to the TC). It can backup TO a NAS such as TC or a USB HDD attached to the TC. You can transfer your music to another external HDD that is connected directly to a Leopard-loaded Mac and TM can backup that up to TC/HDD attached to a TC.

  • Time machine can not access time capsule after upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion

Two days ago I upgraded my 2009 17" MBP from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. That evening my time capsule/time machine combination worked fine and did an incremental backup of about 12 gigabyte. Yesterday - only one day later - the time machine backup did not work anymore.
It appears that the system can not find the time capsule - even though it shows the remaining free space on the time capsule (so it did find it after all).
The message is always the same:
Time Machine can not complete the backup "Time Capsule"
The image of the backup volume "/Volumes/Data/Pauls MacBookPro.sparsebundle" is not accessable (Error -1).
I also can not delete the backup image on the time capsule since it is read-only. And I do not want to format the time caspsule yet since my wife's MBAir is also using the same time casule.
I tried out all kinds of suggestions (hard and soft resetting both the MBP and the TC, entering the password again, setting the TC up again) all to no avail. No backup is possible anymore.

Sounds like you got this message earlier:
If so, see #C13 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Offhand, I don't recall anyone not being able to delete one via the Finder (but most were only backing-up one Mac, so just erased the disk).
You may have to wait for that message to appear again (24 hours later), or you might try holding Alt/Option with the TM icon in the menubar, and select Verify Backups if it will let you.

  • Time machine does not backup anymore

    Hello all,
I've been using my time machine for a month now, I kept it turned off and only connected the disk when I wanted to make a backup. Then I just hit Back Up Now from the menu and it always backed up everything (I used to check it afterwards). FYI, I've got a 500GB drive and for backups I use a 500GB partition on an external disk, where about 100GB is still free. All of a sudden, my time machine does not backup anymore. It does its run, whether a scheduled hourly one when turned on, or an on-demand one, but it only lasts a split second as though there is nothing to backup and when I enter the time machine, the files are really missing. I can't make it backup anything anymore. What is going on?
    thanks everyone

It's not related to this problem, but that may not be large enough. What's important is not the size of your internal HD, but how much is on it (or is expected to be on it in the next year or so). It varies widely, of course, depending on how you use your Mac, but Time Machine usually needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up.
. . . it only lasts a split second as though there is nothing to backup and when I enter the time machine, the files are really missing.
That sounds like the year-old unfixed bug detailed in red in #D5 of [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

My Time machine will not backup, but will restore from prior backups - the last made three months ago (end of January).  Can anyone help?  When trying to run a backup the screen shows:

There shouldn't be.  Delete any others.
Make sure the one you deleted was in your top-level /Library folder (not the Library folder inside your home folder).  If you got the right one, when you went back to the Time Machine Preferences window, it should not have shown your TM drive or anything else.
I am running Parallels 8 and windows 7 in a Virtual machine, but these do not appear to have created problems in the past - over two years now.
You probably should exclude the VM files from Time Machine backups.  That shouldn't be the cause of much of this problem, but may be a problem in the future.  The reason is, to OSX, a VM file is one huge file -- if anything at all is changed, TM considers the whole thing changed, and will back it up again, taking time and lots of space on your backup disk.
Have you Verified your internal HD, and Repaired any other disks being backed-up, and your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting?
What are you backing-up to (external HD, Time Capsule, etc.)?

    Hello rjhc49,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your external hard drive.  I found an article with steps you can take when an external device is not being recognized.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:

  • Time machine will not backup my home folder

I am having problems with time machine backing up my home folder. There is nothing in the TM exclusion option except (time machine backup) which is understandable. Even if I wanted to exclude it from backups it does not give me the option like its not recognized. Could this be a problem because my home folder is encrypted? I have talked to someone at the apple store about the issue and they where unable to help.

Yes, it's because it's encrypted. Time Machine does not backup a File Vault protected Home folder as it would an unencrypted one. The File Vault disk image is only backed up after you log out. If you never log out then it will not be backed up.
If you want a "normal" backup of your Home folder you will have to turn off File Vault.

  • Time Machine does not backup all of my files

    Hi,
If I compare my Dropbox folder to what Time Machine backups there are differences which means that Time Machine does not backup all files:
    diff <(cd "/Users/phil/Dropbox" && ls -R | sort) <(cd "/Volumes/TimeMachineBackup/Backups.backupdb/Computername/Latest/Macintosh HD/Users/phil/Dropbox" && ls -R | sort)
There are also differences if I compare my user folder to the Time Machine Backup:
    diff <(cd "/Users/phil/" && ls -R | sort) <(cd "/Volumes/TimeMachineBackup/Backups.backupdb/Computername/Latest/Macintosh HD/Users/phil/" && ls -R | sort)
I did not exclude the folders affected from the Time Machine backup.
I have verified this behaviour on other computers as well.
Does anybody else have this kind of problem?
    Philipp

These commands solved the problem for now:
    1) Stop the Dropbox desktop application (if needed)
    - Click on the Dropbox icon.
    - Choose Quit/Stop/Exit
    2) Open your Terminal app (Located at /Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
    3) Copy and paste the following lines into the Terminal, one at a time, and press RETURN after each one. PLEASE make sure you copy and paste these commands (don't type them by hand), as getting them wrong could cause some harm. You'll be prompted for your computer user's password (not your Dropbox password) after entering the first command. Keep in mind that the password field in the terminal will remain blank as you type your password. After you type it, just press ENTER.
    sudo chflags -R nouchg ~/Dropbox ~/.dropbox ~/.dropbox-master

  • Time Machine - Can't backup or Erase/Restore Disk - Following Mavericks upgrade

Hi Everybody, I have been looking through the internet to try and solve the issue I am having, I have seen people with similar issues but I can't seem to quite find the answer I'm looking for.
A couple of weeks following the Mavericks upgrade, I have started having issues with my time machine partition on my external hard drive (2TB Seagate - 1TB for Time Machine, 1TB for general large files). It started off with "The backup disk ""Time Machine" is not available" which led me to have a look into the issue. I have tried repairing the disk, which gave me the following error:
And "Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
This then lead me to try to erase the Time Machine partition, as far as I can tell, I don't think I need anything from in the past, and I have backed up most things onto the other half of the hard drive. However I can't erase the disk because of this:
"Volume Erase failed with the error: Couldn’t open disk."
The "Time Machine" volume is also grayed out. I'm really at a loss to figure out how to fix this, I'm not worried about recovering all of my time machine files I just want it to work from now on. I also don't want to lose any of the content that is on the other half of the partition.
I have tried putting volumes into spotlight privacy, but not sure what else I can try?
I'm also having issues reading files from an external server, but I'm not sure if this is related to Mavericks or on our side here.
Any advice would be really appreciated

This is exactly what just happened to me. Did anything work for you or did you have to buy a whole new drive? My 1.5tb time machine partition did what you described, while the other 1.5tb extra storage partition is fine.

  • Time Machine does not backup all files

I recently did a clean install and to my horror i can see that Time Machine does NOT back up all my files.
It seems to be worst in my music library which fortunately is pretty easy to rebuild do to itunes index.
But is there any way to make sure that Time Machine does in fact back up all files?
Or is it just broken and should be avoided?
I have 1,5 year old Macbook Pro Retina 15 inches 500 GB SSD

If you use the third-party application "Dropbox," you may see files in the Finder that are not present locally, but are actually on a network server. Those files won't be backed up and won't appear in Time Machine, even though they show in a Finder window. If the files in question are in a Dropbox folder, disable the software or refer to its developer for support.
Continue only if you've ruled out Dropbox or any similar product as a possible cause of the issue.
