Time Machine cannot find Time Capsule after turning auto backups off

2010 macbook 7,1 OSX 10.6.8.  Brand new rev.4 Time Capsule 2TB (MD032LL/A) just bought yesterday.
Everything set up just fine and wireless is working.  Backups are working.
Issue is that as soon as I turn the Time Machine slider to Off (I can turn it back to On at this point, doesn't matter once it's been in the Off position) in TIme Machine preferences, then try and Enter Time Machine or do a backup, it cannot find the Time Capsule (says cannot find backup volume or such).  I have to reselect the drive even though it's icon is showing right on the preferences screen.  A reboot will enable it to find the Time Capsule without my input.
If I leave Time Machine turned on, the backups run fine and I can enter the Time Machine.  It is turning off Time Machine that triggers the issue.
Tried the following:
  -Rebooted Time Capsule
-Made sure Time Capsule name is less than 27 characters (it is 19)
  -Firewall is off
  -Filevaullt is off
  -Booted into Safe Mode
  -Repaired permissions
  -Trashed TIme Machine plist
  -Updated OSX
At this point I called Applecare and they had me send them a capture of my TIme Machine data and will get back to me Monday.
Oddly, my 10.5.8 iMac G5 2ghz is working fine with Time Machine and does not have this issue.  I can turn Time Machine off and on all I want and it can find the Time Capsule with no problem.
Thanks for any help.

Apple is still working on the issue but I have now noticed that I cannot VNC into my work PC anymore.  I get a "Could not connect to server, connection refused:5900"
I am using Chicken of the VNC and it worked fine until I got the Time Capsule.  I know that 5900 is the port used for something and this sounds like it is related to the Time Capsule.
I can't help but think this is also related to the "Cannot find backup disk" message from Time Machine.  This all sounds like the Time Capsule goofed up the works here.
Also, I now have tons of reports in the console of it not being able to count items in a file at system/library/StartupItems.  That folder is NOT there. Which is why I assume the errors.  I have seen a few other reports and people are just restoring the file from Time Machine or making it via command line with admin.  When I go back far enough in Time Machine, the file IS there but has nothing in it.
I asked Apple about that too and they checked a 10.6.8 computer and it had the file so not sure what is up there.  Not sure if it was 10.6.8 update or the bunch of iTunes, etc that I did after that.
Have not restored that file yet, will wait to see what they say about the Time Capsule mess.
Any ideas on restoring my VNC connection?

Lost disk image in Finder (Desktop) for backup disk on Intel Mac Pro OS 10.7.3. Time Machine cannot find the internal backup disk. The volume is grayed out in Disk Utility, though it CAN verify the volume. How do I get it back on my desktop?

First, restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting the power adapter and reconnecting it. If other devices on the network can see it, you can skip this step.
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
Click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate to unlock the settings, if necessary. Click the Advanced button, then select the TCP/IP tab in the sheet that drops down. Click Renew DHCP lease.
    Try again to back up.

  • Time Machine cannot find a location to put backups??

Hi, so I tried setting up Time Machine because I accidently deleted very important files and have tried all the applications to recover them, but none of them have worked! I am very frustrated because everytime I open Time Machine, it brings up this message:
So of course, I click Set Up Time Machine. But then when I turn it on and and try to select a location it brings me to this:
NO Locations!!! As you can see this is very frustrating... and I would please like some answers to find a location, because no matter what I try, nothing comes up! Thank you for your time, and please answer!

    Hi!
    Check your user manual!!!
On chapter 2-3 I could find the following information:
+The computer provides a SIM card slot on right side, which allows you to install an additional SIM card. *(Provided with some models)*+
So that means if there is no SIM card slot you dont have this option on the notebook.
    Thats all about this!
    Bye

  • Time Machine: Cannot find backup (external hard drive)

Hello and thank you in advance for your help.
I have a MacBook Pro and am running OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I use TM to back up to a 500 GB LaCIe external hard drive, which has worked fine for over a year of ~monthly back-ups. The back-up porcess typically takes some time, but less than an hour or so. While backing up this week, it just halted....and was still backing up 24 hours later. I quit the back-up, dismounted and remounted the LaCie, tried again, but it still got stuck in the backup process overnight. After searching the forums, I used the disk utility to re-partition the LaCie to ensure it had only one partition. When I re-started TIme Machine, I got the message "Your Time Machine backup disk can't be found." It shows up in finder, but when I tried to find it in the TM Preferences, it's not there, so I cannot select it. I dismounted the LaCie, rebooted, and remounted the LaCie, but that didn't fix anything. Help, please?

Part 1 of my problem is fixed. I decided to run the disk repair and then re-do the partiton process, but this time, I kept the default name assigned to the partition by disk utility ("Untilted-1"). Now TM sees it, and is backing up. Part 2 remains to be seen. I expect it will take 24+ hours anyway, BC I reformatted the LaCie, and this is essentailly the first backup on a re-formatted hard drive.

  • Time machine cannot find the backup disk, need to reset but previous data cannot be accessed.

Lately, my time machine/time capsule has the problem to find the backup disk in the time capsule and cannot perform the backup. I have to reset (at the back of the unit) then the backup can start again, but I can only access the backup data since the last backup, all my previous backup data is no longer available.
Does anyone face the similar situation and how to fix it?

    Hi there!
Did you try upgrading to the latest WD Firmware?
    It fixes the following:
    WD Universal Firmware Updater 3.1.0.10:
    Fixes:
Now works with 10.7.x (Lion OS-X)
Now works with new My Book Studio (without Electronic Paper Display), new MyPassport for Mac, and new My Passport Studio model.
    Made device detection more robust.

My mac book air connects to my network and gets internet access but airport utility  cannot find my airport base station to set up time machine

Normally, AirPort Utility is not used or needed to set up Time Machine backups......unless a default setting on the Time Capsule to Enable File Sharing has been changed.
On the other hand, if you open AirPort Utility, a picture of the Time Capsule should be displayed. Are you saying here that the Time Capsule does not appear when you open AirPort Utility?

  • Time Machine cannot find NAS drive since Lion install

I've been very successfully using a Buffalo NAS drive to backup using Time Machine in Snow Leopard, but since 'upgrading' to Lion I just cannot get TM to see the NAS drive.  I can see the drive in Finder, and it's listed as a share, but each time I try a backup I receive the same message:  'The backup disk is not available'

    Not sure about Buffalo.
I have a DroboFS NAS and had to get a firmware upgrade for it to support the changes that Apple made in Lion.

  • Time Machine cannot find external hard drive

I have just recently purchased an airport extreme and have enjoyed being able to plug in an external hard drive for time machine. I think I must have reset my laptop while it was backing up because now I get an error every time it tries to back up. The error I get is disc image cannot be accessed (error 2) I have tried everything I can think (reseting router, unplugging and plugging back in the hard drive, changing networks, and then back) but still nothing. I am not even able to enter the time machine to back up to a time before I had this problem. I can however access the contents of the drive just not successfully complete a time machine back up. Thanks for the help

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Start by Repairing the sparse bundle that contains your backups, via #A5 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If that doesn't help, try a "full reset" per #A4 there.
You do need to know that backing-up this way is "iffy" and +*not supported+* by Apple. See the Using Time Machine with a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • TIme machine - size of HD doubled after restoring a backup

    Hi there,
I think I have an issue with Time Machine. I had to restore my HD, and after the backup the size of the drive has suddenly doubled. I suspect TM created saved a copy of the backup on the HD, but I can't find, so I guess I might be an hidden file somewhere. Do you know if this is possible? If so, can I delete the backup file? I basically lost 100+ GB which I'd like to have back...
    Thanks for you help!

That erases your internal HD, which gives it a new UUID, which means Time Machine treats it like a new drive, and backs-up everything on it: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
That was supposed to be fixed in Snow Leopard, but obviously wasn't.

  • Cannot find time machine

I bought the Time capsule over Christmas.  Set it up and it worked fine.  a month ago it kept telling me cannot back up time machine.  I reset it to factory settings after I tried everything else on line to fix it.  I have set it up and now I cannot find time machine.  I turn Time Mchine to ON and it takes me to the screen that should have my time capsule...but it says "Set up other time capsule (set up a time capsule that is not listed here)"
I click on that and then clic on "Open Airport Utility"
I can see my Time Capsule.  It has a green light on my computer and on the acutal machine.  AirPort Utility says it found it and all the settings are correct.  I go through until I get the end and hit FINISH.
(I have updated to Lion after Christmas..don't know if that caused the issue)
THere is no Time Machine icon on my desk top.  Where is it?
    Thanks!

Are you using a new 802.11ac Time Capsule - the "tall" one - and are you still using Mac OS X 10.6.8?
You need OS X 10.7.5 "Lion" or later, or an iOS device, to configure an 802.11ac Time Capsule:
